Hi Everyone,
I have had two troupes contact me in the last week who have just heard about TDF'09, and have extended the Pre-Registrtion date from Sept. 15 - Oct. 15 with a $5 late processing fee. I feel that it is only fair to extend the offer to anyone else who would like to take advantage of it. I am happy to say we have 12 troupes represented at TDF'09 so far this year. We also have several soloists. There are a couple of dance slots left in the Friday night show, how many exactly depends on the length of the performances. So, if you were planning on coming, wanting to dance, and missed the Sept. 15 date, get them in soon.

BUT..we have a baby and cant bring everything along with us as well as our stuff..(yikes at the thought)

Does anyone have a spare stroller, a pack n play (play pen) and a infant carseat we can borrow Wednesday night before the event until Sunday when we fly back?

We are also going to ask if anyone is willing to pick us up at the Omaha airtport and drive us back. Three adults and a baby in a carseat plus our luggage and I imagine Jas will drag along some instruments. I'm thinking ahead since Tribal Dreams is still two and a months away..but I am at the liberty to be so forward thinking these days. Once we can get to the hotel by the site, we'll be ok..although I want to be at the studio on Thursday but we'll figure it out. We might end up renting a car anyways cause I might want to see people.

Props and Delsarte
How we hold props, where in relation to ourselves and our audience we hold them, and how we move them-- all of these can add very specific dramatic qualities to our dancing with props. We will use the Delsarte system to study this and to empower your dance with a prop, whether it be a cane, a candle or, heaven forbid, a chocolate bar!

Meaning in the body - This class uses the Delsarte system to look at the symbolism of the human body and different parts. Dance movements can be very similar, but when initiated from different parts of the arms, legs or torso, they appear very different to an audience. We will study nearly every part of the body a dancer can use, and explore meaning in it. Then we explore how this can be put to use to create steps in virtually any dance style.

John Compton
Tamzara/Kashlamar 9/8 folk dance. Learn this unique folk dance from John Compton of Habiru!

Tribal Origins with John Compton - ILearn about the origins of Tribal Bellydance from John Compton. Original Movements and stories.

Samantha Riggs
Bollywood form and attitude: “Mitwa” - This class will cover the dynamic and exuberant choreography of the song “Mitwa” from the famous Bollywood film Lagaan. Samantha will also be incorporating her signature Bollywood tribal style combos - made popular by Boom Boom Bollywood - which can be adapted for use in any choreography or tribal dance form. It is suitable for men and women of all dance levels. Women should be sure to wear support or sports bra. If you wear a skirt, be sure to wear something under it as we will be jumping and spinning! All levels.

Temple Bollywood - In this class, Samantha will help you train your body to project emotion through the use of Indian postures and classical hasta mudras (“hand positions”), plus teach graceful transitions and foot placement so you will feel centered and grounded no matter what your dance background! Through learning the foundations necessary for physical expression in a Bollywood context, you will be able to apply your newfound knowledge across all disciplines and in your everyday life. The feedback from dancers who have taken this class is very positive in terms of muscular development and a sense of well-being imparted by poses and motions. By the end of the workshop you will be able to perform a “Bollyasana” that can be used as either a warm-up or as a performance piece. Open to beginners and also suitable for advanced dancers from other disciplines. Please wear form-fitting workout/dance clothes that enable you to see your body position easily. If you need knee or ankle support to do deep knee bends, please bring it. All levels.

Fosse-lized - Let us tip our stylish bowler hats to Bob Fosse, jazz dance choreographer extraordinaire! Samantha has brought the stylized, cynical sexuality of Fosse to Bellydance and “Fosse-lized” some fusion combos for you to learn. These combos are dark, satirical and full of attitude and emotive body language. Besides his distinctive dance style (which included the use of inward knees, rounded shoulders and body isolations), Fosse also utilized the idea of subtext (unspoken thoughts and motives - the content underneath the dialogue) and gave his dancers something to think about during their numbers. Samantha will facilitate the incorporation of subtext into dance to help develop better acting technique on stage, bringing awareness of pushing an intent just beneath the surface to create more intensity. Long skirts will just get in your way, so please wear form fitting pants of shorts. Fosse believed that The time to sing is when your emotional level is too high to just speak anymore, and the time to dance is when your emotions are just to strong to only sing about how you feel. AMEN! (Intermediate Level - athletic)

Princess Farhana
ARMED AND DANGEROUS! ORIENTAL HANDS AND ARMS
Beautiful hands and arms are the icing on the cake of your performance! This workshop focuses on technique drills for gorgeous hands and arms in belly dance,. Learn how to accent and frame your movements, how to improve ³flow² and to add sensual flourishes and embellishments to your
performance, and how to dance with slow, graceful arms layered over quick movements and shimmies. We will cover Egyptian, Turkish, Rom and folkloric gestures, as well as dramatic arm and hand positions suitable for fusion performances. Also covered: hands and arms with finger cymbals. bring your cymbals! Class notes will be provided. This class is open to all levels.

FUSION OR CON-FUSION: CREATING A DRAMATIC FUSION PERFORMANCE
Learn to combine Middle Eastern dance with any other style to create a seamless fusion performance. Learn to access technique and stage presence while you move and think on your feet. With technique from different genres of belly dance and other dance forms, explore emotion, dramatic intent and story telling within dance; character development; symbolic imagery; improvisation; tools for great communication with your audience, and knowing when and HOW to break the rules! Notes included- Open to all levels.

THE NAUGHTY SIDE OF LITTLE EGYPT: CONTRASTING BELLY DANCE WITH BURLESQUE- HISTORY, TECHNIQUE & PERFORMANCE
Though belly dancers often bristle at the comparison to burlesque artists, the history of the two dance genres are historically entwined in America.
THIS IS NOT A FUSION WORKSHOP! This class will focus on the differences- and similarities- between Oriental dance and burlesque, and how both types of dance changed and influenced each other. Starting off with a bit of belly dance and burlesque history, we will move through technique, contrasting the movements of both genres, and explore how they affect each other today. ** THIS CLASS IS PG RATED- NO NUDITY REQUIRED open to all levels

Benu
Tribal Skirt Work - Learn to add skirt movements to your improvisational tribal format. Cues and movements. Use the beauty of your skirt to mesmerize your audience. Movements in both slow (arythmical) and fast (rythmical). With Michele of Benu

Hay y'all,

Happy New Year, and Happy Elevation sign ups!

Elevation 2009 is the 5th year of our yearly belly dance festival. It is held in the small Western town of Golden, CO, nestled down into a valley and up against the Rocky Mountains, near Denver.

The event venue is across the street from our store/studio Paprika, where some of the smaller classes will be held.
There are also hotels in the next block.

A beautiful river runs through the heart of town, and the largest brewery in the world offers free beer just 2 blocks away!

There will be 3 full days of classes, 2 excellent shows with pro sound, lights, DJ, and VJ.
The Fri night show is catered with a fabulous Middle Eastern buffet, and there will be attendee performances, and the Sat night show is for the teachers and a few special guests.

We hold our shows in a large club, and this really is one of the most FUN events around. It's not an event where everyone is made to sit quietly in a theater and suffer through long and drawn out shows. We have fun and dance and laugh and cut up and have a few dranky-dranks. We've got an excellent DJ of Indian decent from the Island of Trinidad that keeps us all jumping to his Chutney Soca and Bangin Bhangra rhythms.

This year is more family friendly with Kids drumming and dancing classes as well as babysitters for the Fri and Sat night shows.

There will be a great bazaar with Merchants from all over the country selling items from all over the world.

The teachers for Elevation 2009 are:
Rachel Brice: this year with 8 full hours of intermediate/advanced technique
Romka: Badd Ass Fusion Swordsters
Kassar: Slinky Sensual duo returns to share their newest creations
Ariellah: The Fusion Artist
Tribe Marrakech: more from your hostess Fusionistas
The Mezmer Society: Balkan Gypsy Vaudvillian with Tribal Fusion stylings, and music classes
Elijah: World Burner Tribal Fusion
Elizabeth Ostteen: Henna Body Art class
Chris Chambers: Kids Belly Dance
Donovan Warnick: Doumbek, Riq, and Kids Drumming class

This is gonna be another awesome event!

Yes, the early registration date is September 15 and it is fast approaching!!
Registration forms are available in PDF form at www.dancersoasis.net
Registration form has class times and prices as well as lunch activities. All lunch activities come with lunch.

Class Descriptions
Tribal Dreams Festival
November 14, 15, & 16, 2008

Amy Sigil of UNMATA!

Moves You’ve Hopefully Never Thought of Before - This fresh-approach workshop will reveal the secrets of UNMATA’s modern bellydance fusion. Amy will describe, demonstrate, and drill some of the striking stuff you’ve only seen the girls whip out on stage.

Each movement will emphasize specific technique and capture the nuance of UNMATA’s popular style. Because this class is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer, a sufficient understanding of balance, timing, and isolation skill is prerequisite. Curriculum can easily be adapted for cabaret or tribal disciplines.

Overlaying Isolations, Amy Sigil Style- Amy’s Art of Overlay is at the heart of this intermediate to advanced bellydance workshop aimed to add expressive layers and distinction to your dance style. Although controlled simultaneous movement is a complex idea, this class provides a simple approach certain to bring impressive results.

Beginning with a thorough breakdown of basic isolation technique, Amy will expand such elements as core strength and relaxed tension, and then demonstrate helpful exercises that are necessary to develop an awareness needed to isolate key muscle groups. Then she will teach and drill an isolation combo that incorporates the artistic flare unique to Amy Sigil and UNMATA.

Because this class is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer, a sufficient understanding of balance and timing is
prerequisite.

Sabine of Tribalation!

Dangerous Sword Dancing - Intermediate to advanced sword work and presentation. Learn the moves that take your sword dance from so-so to stunning: strong isolations, uncanny reverse energy moves, working multiple balance points, powerful floorwork, and signature moves like The Slice, Sabine’s Guillotine, and “ghosting” the sword.

Sassy Tribalation! combinations - Signature medium and fast-tempo “Tribalation!” steps and original combinations in true improvisational tribal style. All levels, but some previous improvisational tribal style dance exposure is recommended.

Joe Williams

Meaning in motion - This class uses the Delsarte system to study some of the most basic movements that occur in dance, and see the meaning within them. Forward and back, side to side, diagonals and curves, all have universal symbolism. Working with those meanings makes choreography easier to create, and to interpret. We will also study the basic angles of head carriage for meaning, then use head angles and movement directions to create combinations and patterns.

Lea Logan

Stagecraft - Secrets of staging that Lea reveals in this class cover all the highlights. With over a thousand directing and choreography productions behind her, these are tried and true "recipes" for success. These formulas work for both solos and troupes. Specifically designed just for dancers they include strong entrances, boosting choreographic content and big finishes. Make your dances POP by applying these simple, dynamic, well researched and interesting techniques!

Staging Ethnic Dances - Folk dances are much more fun to DO than they are to WATCH. Discover how to make these slight alterations that will make any folk dance more THEATRICAL without compromising the integrity of the movement or the Spirit of the message. This is not your mama's line dance choreography! Make your folk and ethnic dance presentations as much fun for your Watchers as they are for your dancers. Tahitian to Timbuktu, these techniques will work for you!

Zada Al Gaziyeh

Ghawazee Dance - What makes it Ghawazee instead of just folkloric style? Summary Sez: a little history and a lot of technique.

Tribal Dreams Festival
November 14, 15, & 16, 2008
Class Descriptions

Dancers with a decent dance vocabulary in their body’s repertoire can present in more than one style. It’s the way they perform a step or movement that portrays cabaret, folkloric, tribal or any other style of ME Dance. Zada used her studies with Aisha Ali and Egyptian Ghawazees as well as years of observation to develop her approach to Ghawazee technique. This class will show you how to walk and chew gum at the same time…

Della Bynum

Veil - This class will teach veil combo’s useful to both troupe and soloist.

Benu Dance Company
There will be one class each from Michele and Barb - What???? Opinions????

I think they filmed Ghostbusters on top of this building..lol.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebraska_State_Capitol This shows pics of it inside.
A fun thing to visit.
A little history lesson of all its glory.

The State Capitol was the tallest building in the state of Nebraska until the Woodmen Tower in Omaha was completed in 1969.
- A public observation deck is on the 14th floor.
- This is the 2nd-tallest capitol building in the United States. Only the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge rises higher.
- This was the first state capitol building to deviate from a traditional capitol building type to the tower. The Louisiana State Capitol, North Dakota State Capitol in Bismarck, and State Capitol Tower in Tallahassee have followed suit.
- The Nebraska State Capitol was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and made a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
- The statue "the Sower" atop the building is 19 feet tall.

Hi everyone,
There has been some confusion about the Hafla and the Saturday Show, so to clear up a few questions.
Anyone wanting to perform at Tribal Dreams this year, you will be scheduled in the Friday evening Hafla. If you are a member of a troupe and a soloist, preference for spots will go to troupes as this is a Tribal Festival. The Saturday Extravaganza will be only the presenters and the hosting troupe Benu - of which the two directors Barb and Michele will be presenting, so the troupe will show you their stuff. With all of the presenters this year, we were not able to put the two shows together and have the show finished before 2 or 3 in the morning, that's a little to long to stay in a hard show and really cuts down on the party time!! Both the Hafla on Friday and the Show on Saturday will be at the Women's Club, where the entire event will take place.

If you are performing in the Hafla, you will not need to pay for the Hafla.

Thanks,
Please let me know if you have any other questions.

This class will focus on helping the Intermediate / Advanced drummer with flourishes, pops, and all that Jas!
(1 ½ hour) Saturday, 10:30 AM

Middle Eastern Music Theory - Jas of Khafif - Music theory through the ages and why they have all those funny things called “madams”, for the musician and the musical dancer. (1 ½ hour) Saturday, 5 PM

Liquid Isolations and the Essence of Sword Dance - Sabine of Tribalation! - For Beginners and Advanced dancers. Distilled sword dance technique: instruction in extending hip, arm, and belly isolations and making them look ever-so-smooth-and-gooey while using sword balancing points. We’ll practice sword hold techniques and dramatic presentation, work on those all important arms, and block a slow sensual sword dance. Please bring your own sword. No battle ready swords. Class limited to 30 students only.
(1 ½ hour ) Friday, 8:30 AM

Performance Focus - Sabine of Tribalation! - Delve into all the things those videotapes never tell you about : tricks for stage fright, facial expression, choosing music, fitting moves to the music, blocking a song, improvisation, default dance steps, the importance of isolations, costume issues, and much more. This is for all types of dancers, and will be useful to both Tribal and Cabaret bellydance.
(1 ½ hour) Saturday, 10:30 AM

Extreme Taxsim - Princess Farhana - Make your undulations look “boneless” as well as effortless! This special workshop focuses on slow movements and combinations perfectly suited for languid Oriental taqsim and chifteltelli pieces, such as layered shimmies, interesting variations on camels and figure eight’s, and veil work. It will also provide the building blocks for beautiful abdominal technique, like belly rolls and flutters, and the amazing “flundulation” - a belly roll layered with a flutter. Class includes a detailed handout sheet - bring veil and a towel, you will be sweating! (1 ½ hour) Saturday, 1 PM

Veil Obedience School - Princess Farhana - Is your veil getting the best of you: Are you dancing “Egyptian Style” just because your veil intimidates you? Hey - it’s only a piece of cloth! Whip that sucker into shape with this workshop, which focuses on - you guessed it - veil work! Learn the principles of using a veil as well as some really great, complicated - looking moves that’ll delight your audience. Entrances, exits, beautiful framing and drapes to conceal and reveal your charms; pretty spins and some cool “old school” veil wraps are some of the technique touched upon. Learn the trick to using a veil and cymbals at the same time. Detailed handout included…don’t forget to bring your veil (and cymbals, if you use them)… it’s time your veil learned who the boss is! (1 ½ hour) Sunday, 10:30 AM

Bhangra Dance - Samantha of Boom Boom Bollywood -Are you ready? Bhangra is a traditional and energetic folk dance from Punjab, Northern India, and the newest trend in Bhangra is a super-athletic form developed as a result of University Bhangra competitions. Samantha has studied this over-the-top style with Punjabi instructors and will break it down for you. Be ready for jumps, stomps, drops and fun with rocking Bhangra remixes! This class is suitable for both men and women at a beginning or intermediate level in Bhangra. Women should be sure and wear a sports or support bra. Pants are recommended – students will only get frustrated wearing a skirt. If you need knee or ankle support to do deep knee bends, please bring it. This class is quite an aerobic workout, but fear not! You’re up to it – just challenge yourself .
(2 hours) Friday, 10:30 AM

Pirate Bellydance - Samantha of Boom Boom Bollywood- (...and what is Pirate Bellydance?) Pirate Bellydance is the culmination of Samantha’s experience with tribal fusion, stage combat, Bollywood and Bhangra, African fusion, comedy theatre and tall ship sailing… plus a little bit of madness… or brilliance (it’s remarkable how often those two traits coincide). Imagine the dynamic action of shipboard sword fights, the physicality of Bhangra and African dance, and the tongue-in-cheek humor of drunken Bollywood or Pirate movie comedy scenes and you may begin to scratch the surface of the spirit of Pirate Bellydance.
(2 hours) Sunday, 4 PM

More Tribal Fusion Combinations - Elizabeth and Chris of Marrakech - Even more spicey fusion combos from Tribe Marrakech. This class will build upon the combos taught last year and add new combos. (2 hours) Sunday, 2 PM

Khaleegy Dance - Jawhara of “Anwaar El Sharq” - Maybe you have heard the word “Khaleegy” - or not? What does it mean? Where in the world is the Persian/Arabian Gulf (and why does it have two names?) Here’s your chance to get an answer or two - and to learn a bit of dancing. Join Jawhara in an exploration of the women, the roots’ or origins of the people, and their music. We’ll learn a vocabulary of typical steps and movements found in “Khaleegy” style dance, what the typical ‘garb’ is, and a little about the music and rhythms. Then we will put this fascinating dance together and dance it!
(2 hour) Saturday, 3 PM

Rajasthani Gypsy Dance - Erin Roark - As a folk dance performed by the snake-charmer people of the Kalbelia caste, the sinuous movements of Rajasthani Gypsy dance, or “Sapera” (serpent) dance, often mirror those of the snake, demonstrating the dancers flexibility and grace. Spontaneous and joyful, dancers clap, shimmy their shoulders and move with syncopated hips, stepping to the distinctive rhythms of Rajasthan and spinning with dizzying force to the hypnotic hum of the pungi. (2 hours) Friday, 1 PM

Building Tribal Combo’s for Improvisational Choreography - Barb of Benu - This class will teach you to use the vocabulary of Improvisation Tribal Dance to build interesting combinations that will wow your audiences. You will also learn to use cues and transitions to vary these exciting combinations.
(1 ½ hour) Sunday, 12:30 PM

More Tribal Floorwork - Michele of Benu - What is tribal floorwork? This class will turn your floorwork into an art form that truly explores the music and dances with it. Powerful tricks, levels, laybacks, Berber walks, turns, and spins, flow from hipnotic slow work. Dance with grace, power and strength. (1 ½ hour) Sunday 9 AM.

It was more like a joke cause I think I'm the only bellydancer who doesn't sew. I also wear the ATS tribally stuff.
Last year she taught a fantastic stage makeup class and she does teach how to make bras and one on headdresses.

Would you be interested? Its not my desicion what classes will be presented but I am curious. I personally love workshops because every teacher gives you a gem of information you never had before and HRH's costumes are amazing!

Pirate Bellydance is the culmination of Samantha’s experience with tribal fusion, stage combat, Bollywood and Bhangra, African fusion, comedy theatre and tall ship sailing… plus a little bit of madness… or brilliance (it’s remarkable how often those two traits coincide). Imagine the dynamic action of shipboard sword fights, the physicality of Bhangra and African dance, and the tongue-in-cheek humor of drunken Bollywood or Pirate movie comedy scenes and you may begin to scratch the surface of the spirit of Pirate Bellydance.
