Just like to say thanks to all the beautiful people who joined us at Tribal Ford last weekend. We had a wonderful time as we knew we would! The lovely teachers provided us with a fantastic range of classes to choose from drawing on their amazing talents. The performances we were privileged to watch were top class. Those of you who did not manage to make it and join us this time missed a fabulous treat. I felt there was a very special atmosphere, showing me again how much I love being part of the Tribal community.
Ford castle as a venue didn't let us down, the friendly helpful staff looked after us in style.
We are already bouncing ideas around for a few surprises for you at next years event. I am sending out the evaluation sheets and would appreciate your comments so we can make next years event even better.

The Tsingani girls have been kind enough to bring some Solace and EMP titles to Tribal Ford. They will have,

>Opium Head, The Deluxe Version by Solace
>Moon Moth Mixes by Solace
>Sleeping Sober Single by Solace
>Eastern Expressions 3: Asahi by Ruben van Romapey

This is your chance to get the latest from EMP without paying for shipping.

Just a note, the Tsingani girls rocked the house at Tribal Fest and Tribal Caravan while dancing to "Bol One" from Opium Head. So a big hug and thank you to Theresa and Bonnie!!!

Polstar at Tribal Ford

Hello all you lovely people joining us for this years Tribal Ford.
I wanted to let those of you know who don’t already about Polstar the wonderful photographer. She may join us at Ford but obviously needs to know if you would be interested in having a session with her. Imagine the potential backdrops to a photo shoot for you and your group in and around the castle!
The cost will be £25 for a session from which you will get a disc of gorgeous images.
She does need to have bookings in advance to make sure she can cover all her costs so let me know asap if you or your group would like a session. It would be great if we could get her to come join us!

I interviewed Polly to find out a bit about her and what she does.

• What attracted you to photographing Tribal Bellydance?
• I have my friend Pixie to thank for that. She is arguably the most well known Tribal Bellydance Photographer in the world, and she told me about this scene. I looked on Tribe to see if there were any dancers in the UK and was pleasantly surprised. I contacted a few to see if there was any chance of working with them to expand my portfolio - one thing lead to another and now the majority of the work I'm doing is with belly dancers!
• What did you do before?
• I did before what I do now ... I'm a teacher in a secondary school full time. I teach English and Media Studies. My photography, that started as a hobby has now blossomed into a 'serious' hobby. To the point where I'm hopefully going part-time in my job later in the year to start pursuing it a bit more seriously.

• What else do you like to photograph?
• Unusually - cemeteries. My photography started with a project based around London's 137 cemeteries, trying to capture their fading beauty - I've exhibited my work and work closely with a couple of the cemeteries.
I've also photographed a few gothic models and am going to start work soon on my own project based on clowns. I am coulrophobic, which means I'm terrified of clowns, I'm hoping that by working with MUAs and models on this project I can confront my fear either that or run screaming out of the studio!

• What other events and people have you captured?
• On the Bellydance Scene I've covered Tribal Unity in Cambridgeshire, Tribalondon and Shimmyshake. I've been lucky enough to have captured three of the Bellydance Superstars: Sharon Kihara, Kami Liddle and Samantha Hasthorpe. I've been honoured to also photograph the divine Princess Farhana - doing some candid photography backstage with her was so much fun! I've also photographed The Uzume live and we really want to work together on a shoot (hopefully if I come up to Tribalford this year!)
• On the British scene I've photographed Moirai, Neo-Hips, Rashini, Khalgani, Kimberley Mackoy. The Tribal Twisterhood ... amongst others. Honestly I've been so lucky to have met and photographed so many beautiful women (oh - and men!)

• You have become a face seen at many Tribal Bellydance events do you feel part of the scene?
I actually am starting to ... it's been such a short while that I've been doing this, however, at Tribalondon it was a real shock to have people coming up to me and saying 'You're Polstar (or Polly) aren't you?'. And either commenting on my work or asking to work WITH me. I'm really looking forward to the next few months as I have some very exciting shoots planned with various individuals and troupes.
I remember chatting to someone recently about how I feel really comfortable at bellydance events, and I think that's because there is such a level of mutual support. In teaching you can feel very alone in your classroom, when I'm out photographing on the scene there is a real sense of unity and friendship.
I'd also like to take this moment to apologise to everyone, so far, who has filmed an event and had my head pop up in front of their camera half way through - you're all very gracious. In fact, I've set up a playlist on Youtube for videos of the back of my head!

• Does the scene integrate alongside other aspects of your lifestyle?
With some difficulty sometimes - I'm lucky that I have the long holidays in which I can separate myself from work and immerse myself in the scene and photography. I feel it enhances my life a lot though, I feel more feminine being around dancers, which is always a bonus (so many pretty things to adorn oneself with!). My husband is very good at encouraging my work and has attended an event with me - however he doesn't get to see me much at these events as I am usually photographing almost constantly.

• Do you dance yourself?
No. I want to though!

• What do you offer dancers as a photographer?
I feel that I offer a varied and unique perspective. A photoshoot with me will not be scary or intimidating, I like to have fun when I'm working and this hopefully comes out through my work. I feel that I am someone who connects with my subjects and their style. I'm always willing to try something new and collaborate on ideas.

• Having attended lots of events do you have any favourite dancers you enjoy photographing? Can you say why?
I don't have favourites! (that's the teacher in me) - however - for different reasons I loved photographing Sharon Kihara - she is very striking and her body moves so gracefully that it's wonderful to capture in monochrome.
• The Uzume were also very interesting to photograph - their formations ensure that you are hardly ever photographing them 'in a row' - and it really makes for interesting angles and composition in a photograph.
• Princess Farhana blew me away with her elegance and energy - it's really good sometimes to see dancers smile!
• Ozgen was fascinating to photograph simply because he's a male bellydancer and I'd never seen that before! He can SHIMMY!

• What makes your photographs so atmospheric?
I hope that within them I capture the mood of the dance and the style of the dancer/s. I think it's difficult to say how I do it ... I believe it's about how I see the world - and the people within it.

• Do you have a favourite photograph that you could share with us? What makes it special?
• My favourite photograph, not for technical prowess or anything like that, but simply as a moment captured, is of Samantha Hasthorpe at Tribalondon. She outstretched her arms and the lights on the back drop formed a 'sun' around her head. I loved the silhouette of her against this bright beautiful sun.

• What next for you? Do you have plans or a vision of what the future hold? My diary over the next couple of months is slowly getting taken up with shoots, which is SO exciting - it's taking me outside of London which is always a good thing. I'm also hopefully attending TribalFord (!) and Gothla this year.
If I'm able to go part time in my teaching career I'm hoping that I can set up a small studio (I have my lights in my study and not much room for anything else!) and start working from there also. In the meantime I'll keep on coming to events that I'm invited to where possible and working with dancers wherever they want me to!

Do go and have a look at her photos if you have not yet had the pleasure she is a very talented lady who has the knack of capturing Tribal dancers in all their glory!

If anyone can help us it would be so appreciated! Our original offer of a place to stay when we arrive in London on May 21 has fallen through. Is there anyone who knows anyone who could possibly put up with any of us...3 people who could house one dancer or all 3 or any combination of help? Any suggestions would be helpful right now! There is a hotel that was suggested to us that would cost us $800, a bit out of our budget, I would only use it as a last resort. I know that staying in London is expensive but wow! For 400 a night in the U.S. you would be staying in a pretty classy place!
We don't take up much space, we are nice, we teach tribal, we are clean, and smell pretty good and could bring you tequila or whatever it is that you would like from the U.S. that is legal too!
And of course, I would be happy to host our rescuer if they ever come out to L.A. for a visit!

Shake, Rattle & Roll with Elizabeth from She'enedra
Combinations, sequences & exercises built from our collection of unique shimmies, undulations to spice up your dances. This workshop will focus on stretches & developing muscle memory to enhance your performances with lovely undulations punctuated with shimmies, pops, locks & floorwork.
Skill level- Intermediate-Advanced or ambitious beginner!

In Sync: Tsingani Style with Bonnie from Tsingani
Want to gel with your dance mates? Then this is the workshop for you! Bring your troupe – this is not for soloist. This class focuses on connecting with your dance partners to create a smooth, synchronized performance. We will work in pairs, switching up as we go along, to fine tune your awareness of your dance partner. There is no “YOU” in this workshop! We will be using Basic foundational moves (which might be new to you), plus a few of Tsingani moves, that will be re-taught so you can focus on your partner instead of the moves.
Be prepared …..we are detail freaks!
Skill Level: Open

Pimp my ATS with Renate from Uzume
Another hot & funky Uzumé Combination for spicing up your ATS repertoire!
We will learn the newest Uzumé Flavoured Combo, great for both Tribal and Fusion dancer. The combo comes with a Cue, fresh and ready to be added to your improvisational ATS vocabulary. Will be practiced with basic ATS steps.
Skill Level: Open

Hi everybody!
As you know The Uzumé is going to Tribal Ford this year, Yeeeh! But as we do not have our one private airplane yet....we could use some help with figuring out how to get there :)
So, what's the best way? Any advise?
If we can drive with someone from London or any other large city where we can fly to, that would be perfect. But every other idea is welcome! And all three of us can drive!
Many thanx from Tjarda & Renate & Minka

Hi guys
I desperately need a balanced Scimitar/Sword for belly dancing. Ideally I'd like a Balady Scimitar or a Cas Iberia Scimitar, as I own one similar and am planning to do a 'double sword' workshop. However I'm not fussy!
Does anyone one know of a supplier in the UK that sells them or does anyone want to part with one.
Thanks
Denise

I've been offered a space at Tribal Ford to take photos.
However, I obviously have to pay for my own accomodation and travel - therefore I need to make it worth my while coming up.
If you would take advantage of my services - a photo shoot (individuals and groups) with disc of hi-res images to use - how much would you be willing to pay?
You can see my work here on Tribe - or you can view all he photos I took at Tribal Unity in the summer here: http://www.polstarphotography.com/tribalunity.htm

This is something I would really love to cover, but I have to think of my purse strings also!

Let me know :)

Getting to the castle by car, use their postcode TD15 2PX and type into Google Maps or AA Route Planner along with your own postcode and you will get door to door directions.

Travelling by train, then the nearest station is Berwick upon Tweed which is 12 miles north east. I will post the local taxi number here soon as there is no bus option, this is rural Northumberland!

If people are looking to share transport can I suggest you use this site to post requests and make contact with others travelling from your area. It saves money, it saves carbon emissions and you get to make new Tribal friends, it makes sense!

Anyone with specific travel queries just ask and I will try to answer them or at least point you in the right direction.
A x
P.S. My yoga teacher walked to the last retreat he went to in order that he arrive in the right frame of mind for the weekend!!??? Anyone planning this mode of travel I can give you the map reference on request.

Hi Folks,
We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the belly dance community. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

http://www.myspace.com/nomadiqa

It would also be great to promote it through the network of belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

Hope to hear from you.

Many thanks,
Tribal Calendar for Sale

All calendars are sold in aid of the World Land Trust which is a charity that works to save tropical forests and wildlife. They play an active role in the bid to slow global warming which effects us all. And of course, Sir David Attenborough (one of my heros) is a patron.
See www.worldlandtrust.org for more details.

The calendars are A4 and have a piece of tribal artwork for each month. (These could be framed at a later date).
The artwork has been printed from original oil, acrylic and pastel pieces. There are some previously unpublished work included.

The cost - £7.50 each (+p&p)
Postage/Paypal
UK
1 = £7.50 + 80p Total = £8.30
5 = £37.50 + £2.70 Total = £40.20

USA
1 = £7.50 + £2.90 Total = £10.40 (approx $20.80)
5 = £37.50 + £ 10.50 Total = £48.50 (approx $97)

In an attempt to cut down on postage/paypal charges I've listed the cost to buy 5 at a time. If you would like a different amount, please let me know and I'll find out the cost for you.
If you are from another country, drop me a message and I'll find out the postage cost for you too.
If you pay by cheque, I should be able to reduce the price alittle.

(Also, I have some new Christmas designs ready in about a weeks time. I can post them all together for you to save postage charges. I have afew Christmas cards from last year - see my photos area. Christmas cards go to children's charities).

Please message me for any further information.
Thank you!

Hello
I thought I should introduce myself here to those of you who I have not yet met or communicated with. I am happy to be working with Lindsey to bring to you Tribal Ford 2008.
I have been fortunate enough to attend Tribal Ford every year so far and next year promises to be equally good! Lindsey is still busy busy arranging the teachers but your patience will soon be rewarded when we unveil the line up. If anybody has any queries about accommodation or travel or anything of that nature do give me a ring or drop me an email.

I have just been up to the castle this week to pick up some forms and to have a chat with the staff. Helen, who works at the castle, some of you may remember her from last year, has been so inspired by our dancing, that she has joined one of my classes near by, which is great! So hopefully she will be able to join in some of the workshops with us during our weekend there, between making sure we are all fed and watered in the manner we have become accustomed to, of course!

I came across a story while reading about the history of Ford that I thought was worth sharing. The border regions have had a turbulent history with much fighting, hence the need for so many castles. However the locals also knew how to enjoy themselves, though many of there pastimes were lightly shrouded excuses for more violence ‘Dow Dancing’ stood out as something different though. This took place on Easter Tuesday and villagers from the surrounding district took part. The day began as unorganised dancing in the streets (a hoolie) until all were ‘satisfied’. After this, two females were chosen to dance with each other for as long as they could. During this contest a pigeon decorated with ribands was held up by the feet and this was awarded to the final winner of the contest.
Dancing seems to have been taken quite seriously by many and dancing teachers travelled the area giving lessons. There are references to individuals such as Piper Knox who gave lessons in barns and rooms lent for the purpose. This resulted in traditional dancing becoming a popular pastime and dances were held regularly around the area.

So we are part of a continuing tradition of dancing in the Ford area though minus the violence and the suspended pigeons! The concept of a dance off between two female’s sounds like quite a modern idea but this proves there is nothing new under the sun. I do like the notion of dancing until you are ‘satisfied’ I know that is how I feel at the end of a weekend at Ford and 2008 promises to deliver the same!

Lindsey Macqueen and Angela Noble will be working together to bring you Tribal Ford 2008. They share a common passion in Tribal Bellydance and they previously danced together when Lindsey returned from the States in 2002. The schedule for Tribal Ford 2008 has still to be finalised but it promises to be as varied and interesting as in previous years. Angela’s business, Tribe Zuza will provide the administrative side of things so you can expect the same continued format and quality which you have come to know and love.

secure your place now, as last years TF sold out 7 months prior to the event!

I know you are all waiting with baited breath to hear about the next tribal ford, as some of you are aware Farida have pulled out of future tribal ford events, as Kay says 'its simply not where her passion lies'. to be honest folks it is a lot of work and if you are not into Tribal that much I can totally understand her reasons. It has been great working with Kay on this adventure for the past 3 years, but I am now in discussion with another prospect partner, the castle is provisionally booked for May 24th
I shall keep you posted as much as I can but in the meantime keep a space in your diaries!

yeah though i'd put some tips here based on my experience in previous fords. the first tip i'll leave here is very useful and i am sure amanda will agree with what i have to say: DO NOT HAVE TWO SERVINGS OF DESSERT AFTER LUNCH.
i can guarantee you that trying to drill anything after two servings of dessert won't be fun. i still have bad bad memories of the class i took after it. ouch.

anyone there has any other useful tips?

Some of you may remember the competition I ran quite a few months back, to design our own tribal logo. It is with great delight that that the winner Colleen Murdoch-Pratt (Derbyshire)was selected, I should be able to put a picture up of the design really soon. I am waiting on it to come back from the designers and then I can start taking orders....

Tribal Ford Update

Hi,
I've just figured out how to join Tribe, so Hello. I'm Chrissie from Farida who updates the website. Many apologies, have been in the background updating the web ready to publish and was gonna copy teacher details from emails onto web pages.

Then we lost all our old emails so it's been held up yet again. I had to fit all this in 2 days a week among doing events and general admin, when that Kay woman isn't around. But from beginning of April I'm at Farida 4 days a week so should be able to do more updates, and also keep an eye on the boss - she certainly needs it!!!

Ford balances are due end of this month, and if you haven't already don't forget to let us know if you have special dietary requirements eg veg, vegan, allergies.

Look forward to seeing you at Ford, and maybe some of you might fancy being zombies if I'm doing a Friday night class, makeup and remover will be provided.

Love C

Coming this April, EMP is releasing the Moon Moth Mixes: A Belly Dance Practice Companion, produced by Solace and Blue Damsel’s Rachel Lazarus Soto. The Moon Moth Mixes is a collection of five 13+ minute tracks designed for belly dance class/workshop use and drilling. Each track maintains a steady tempo for the entire length of the song, while the feel of the tracks weave in and out of many moods creating an amazing array of diversity. There are two slow tracks: one frame drum piece and one electronica piece, and three uptempo tracks in varying tempos from slower, to medium, to fast, so that you can progress your class or your own drilling with the advancement of your proficiency. Featured in the mixes are samples from Ruben van Rompaey's re-released Eastern Expressions 2: Gomera, Maduro's Shimmer Sustain, Solace's Nagari, as well as a full length remix of 'Jiva', from Solace's Nagari, and a full length remix of 'Sleeping Sober' from the upcoming (early 2008) Solace Release Opium Head. These mixes were assembled by Jeremiah Soto, the writer/producer of Solace, and may be considered some of his finest work yet. This disc will be available for pre-order, so visit our store!

I Can confirm that Ayse and Elizabeth from the dance collective are coming to teach us there ways, I have some more names that will excite you but I am waiting for the contract (I believe it is in the post) to arrive. But let me tell you that I was soooo excited that I called Kay up just to share my high with!!!
On the Uk front, we have Deirdre MacDonald, Dawn O'brien, and for the first time Elaine Hughes. and From Eire, we also will have the graceful talents of Wendy Marlatt. Now if all this sounds to much for you, please let me know I would hate to be guilty of tribal overload!

Ok, so a lot has been happening here in the background of preparing for the next event. But I need your help in designing a t-shirt for Tribal ford. First of all I want to know what colour it should come in?
Style?
Sizes?
should it be dated?
should it have a list of the teachers names on it?
Anything else?
I was thinking of running a competition for the design, with the winner recieving a copy of the newest east coast tribal dvd.
what do you think?
Comment, concerns and anything else greatly accepted (well within reason that is).
Lindsey.

Ok, so tell me all about it

I've never been to Tribal Ford, but I would really like to go. My issue is one of cost as I can only afford to do one big event a year so I'm currently trying to decide which big event that's going to be for 2007. I've had a look at the info on the website and it looks great, but I would like to know more about what it involves.

Does the cost include everything, accomodation, all workshops, hafla entrance etc or do you pay extra for the workshops on top?

How long are the workshops? How many can you take? What's the stucture of the day like? Is it possible to bring non dancing friends or partners with you and if so do they pay the same amount?

There's probably more questions that I've forgotten, so just tell me what it's like!

Thanks in advance.
