belly dancing as a spiritual practice?

Hey folks!

I'm giving a presentation to a student organization (Pagan Student Alliance) on my campus this upcoming Monday on belly dancing as a spiritual practice, so I thought I'd ask people a few questions about it so that I'll have more than my own experience to give in this presentation!

If belly dance is considered spiritual to you...
How/why is it considered to be a spiritual practice to you?
Do you integrate it into any rituals that coincide with whatever religion(s) you follow?

I'd really appreciate any input - I don't want to just give my own experience since it's so limited. Also, if anyone has any good websites on dance as a spiritual/religious practice I'd be so glad to get them from you!

Thanks,
Amy

This is an interesting question. I haven't thought of it like that as of yet. Still stumbling through the steps for a recital at the dance school. But I can see how it could very well be an act of praise or devotion, meditation. I would like to hear what others have to say too!

For me, spirituality is about being the best person you can be, as well as connecting to something greater than yourself--a divine/higher energy, or even the love and comradery within a group of women dancing together. When I'm dancing, I can feel that energy. I feel special and connected and in the flow of life. This dancing "high" is my spirituality. No other specific ritual is needed.

Definately! I am pagan also, i actually was introduced to bellydance at a healing drum circle and fell in love. The movements connected with my soul and made me connect with myself and the long line of women in history who formed thie dance. When I dance I can let my spirit sour and be free, each movement moves me closer to the Goddess, as the drums and beats fire my core to life.

I connect to the elements of Fire when I do fusion. I have fire fans and a fire staff. The elements sing to me and tell my body how to move to the music and how to play with the fire. I often use core bellydance moves to help me into a danceing trance, were i can scry, fight the demons within me, and reach peace in my heart.

Belly dance to me is more then just dancing it is within itself, a rutual practice. The movements of my body directs the flow of the element energy, the music intensifys this. That is why it is important to me to pick music that moves me on a metaphisical level.

I definitely feel it is a spiritual practice, much like yoga. And it is amazing for bringing up the kundalini or life energy, you can use belly dance as a meditation or a profound experience for change. The motion of the hips is great for unlocking your root chakra. There is so much to belly dance and the power that it is able to unleash in your life.
