This is a short documentary I filmed while I was training in California in 2008.
It was a part of a visual anthropology project (I study ethnology and cultural anthropology in Slovenia), but I'm more of a dancer than I am a producer/cameraman/editor - so don't expect a professional film :)
I didn't want to define Tribal Style so I deliberately made a very "open" question - It was really interesting to see all what came out -
ATS, improvisation, community, theater, modern dance, pop, free form, ...
The question I asked the dancers was: "How do you think your style differs from other styles of bellydance. What is it like? How would you describe it to a general audience?"
Thanks to all the dancers who shared their thoughts:
Carolena Nericcio – FatChanceBellyDance
Kajira Djoumahna – Blacksheep Bellydance
Paulette Rees-Denis – Gypsy Caravan
Jill Parker – Ultra Gypsy
Ariellah Afalo – Deshret Dance Company
Heather Stants – Urban Tribal Dance Company
Elizabeth Strong – Bellydance Superstars
Kami Liddle – Bellydance Superstars
Amy Sigil – Unmata
Rachel Brice – The Indigo
Filmed and edited by Manca Pavli
Thanks to all of the dancers for their thoughts, time and inspiration!!!
- Hope you enjoy it -

Re: "What is Tribal Style Bellydance" - a short documentary
Thu, February 26, 2009 - 4:29 AMSe vec taksnih prispevkov :)! Zelo dobro zastavljeno, narejeno, zmontirano. Super je enkrat slisat, kako plesalke interpretirajo svoj ples, cetudi na kratko. Vsec mi je bilo tudi, kako si jih nizala, kot se je razvija sam tribal.
