illustrated poetry

topic posted Thu, October 5, 2006 - 7:23 AM by  Naiya
hi - i have been procrastinating on this project for a whole year...
: /
i would like to publish an illustrated book of modern mystic love poetry. there are 33 poems - and a photo collage for each, which would be in color. i will self-publish the first 50 or 100 (limited edition), and then seek a publishing/distribution package if they are successful. any advice would be welcome ;)

Well, what is the to do list to get it done? Have you done the layout on a computer yet, or do you need to have that done? How are you planning to promote/distribute the work?

What have you done so far?

it's all still in process. i have a background in design (web and print), so layout, etc. will not be a problem... i anticipate having it - as a print-ready product - by january. i have some refining of the collage images to do yet - a few of them i'd like to entirely rework. the issue is the cost of printing. before i lay out everything in indesign, i'd need to know the most cost-effective options for printing, while still giving respect to having a really nice product. the art pages will be glossy . i'm really in the process of figuring costs for the print version. the web version is no cost issue, just time.

I can't think of any reason why not knowing your final printing process would keep you from laying anything out in InDesign, unless you're seriously considering four-color separation, which I can't image your needing for only 50-100 copies.

Even so, not knowing much about InDesign (I'm still lamenting the fate of PageMaker for System 9), I would think you could take a finished product after the fact and do the separating in a copy of the document.

If your graphics will all be photomontage, you'd probably want to print onto a pretty slick paper for best clarity, but even so, I'd think that it would be entirely possible to use either color inkjet or xerigraphic (photocopier/laser-printer) technology.

Are you planning a folio (halfletter) format?

My tendency is to prefer to have the whole project laid out whether or not I know the reproductive technology, but I've never self-published anything using more than one color of ink, so my choices were pretty much limited to plain old printing press and photocopier.

Why do you need to know your options *before* having camera-ready originals?

size would ideally be a larger 'art book' format - coffee table (undetermined exact size - that's why the wait for layout in indesign. i don't want to do it twice. it's easy enough to do once, but twice is a hassle.)... there are a number of reasons other than size for the wait to do the layout.... but.... i agree with beth's idea that (at least initially) i could do the whole layout as a finished product in pdf and upload it to the web and distribute it that way... hmmmm... it's a start - and can be accomplished fairly quickly....

another idea i had incidentally was a card deck of 33 cards (one for each collage and poem)... sort of a tarot deck...

              Great idea about the cards.

I am checking into booksurge.com. For $99 they prepare to print on demand. You have to do the layout, PROPERLY, and provide it to them in a pdf format, but the guidelines are on their site. If we don't get enough people here that want to go in on the set of 10 ISDN numbers, then you can buy them individually for $55 each, and self publish, or let booksurge.com be your publisher through their deal for $99. The really good thing about booksurge.com is that they are affiliated with Amazon and that lists your title there automatically. As I understand it though, Amazon takes 55% right off the top of your book... which is a double edged sword.

PDFs are a good way to prepare your work. Do you know about resolution issues?

Have you heard of or seen www.lulu.com ? I've self-published there and actually sold a few books. It's free. You get your own storefront and people can get with that whatever services they need beyond that for a very reasonable price. You can publish nearly any kind of books, single poems, pictures, CDs, calendars, photos, etc. It's great. My storefront there is www.lulu.com/wisdomchild, if you wish to see a layout.
    Bless you, and good luck.

I haven't seen it yet, but I will definitely check it out!

And as far as print ready is concerned, with the adventof Adobe PDF, you can pretty much use anything, and I do mean anything because I've been stuck with Publisher for the love of God!!!! Did I mention my hard drive crashed? God what a week... Sorry I've been MIA.
