And our hosts Lacey and Alex were so, so good to us and fun to spend time with. Thanks to everyone who came to the workshop and the show. We had such a great time at the Majma dance festival earlier this month. Thanks to Raheesha for organizing a very successful event and making us feel so welcome. Also big thanks to Philippa and Jesse for holding our hands and helping us navigate our way through the trip.

The workshop were fabulous. We had so much fun working with everyone there. I'm trying to get the "Devyani TV" clips we recorded converted to a format that we can upload. We hope to have it up this weekend.

We're looking forward to our return trip to England this fall and seeing our dancer friends across the ocean again. :-)

Thanks to Heather, Lenay, Kimberly, Tiffany and everyone who came out for the Tribal Pura workshops in Phoenix this weekend. It was a great event and a fabulous show. A great time was had by all. The Devyani Reunion set was a blast and the big, big group set with Carolena, Devyani, Lenay, Heather, Jenny from Charlotte and Lucie and Sandy of Red Lotus was killer. :-)

And, congrats to the dancers in the Powerful Presence workshop on Sunday for winning the spirit award. :-) Fantastic job, ladies!

We look forward to returning to Phoenix to continue working with this fabulous women.

What i would learn after a tribal pura workshop?

Hello, im a fusion bellydancer, but i really want to learn ATS, i haven't find a teacher near to where i live, (sooz is about 2 hrs away, maybe i'll try with her) and i only had the opportunity to take a 2 hr workshop with carolena about followin and drilling, but it was very difficult since i dont know the vocabulary... im planning to attend tribal pura 2009 in cuernavaca, morelos, Mexico... but i have never had formal ats instruction (besides what i mentioned above), so, i wonder if that would be a problem, also, i want to know, what i be able to do when i accomplish this workshop... i haven't found a site that explains the class format... if there is one maybe the link would help me... thanks so much!!!

A big shout out to everyone who attended Tribal Pura, General Skills and Teacher Training in Glastonbury. And a special thank you to Sarah, Emrys and Deana for making the event so fun and easy.

This was an amazing event. There were so many talented dancers there. And it was wonderful to see new troupes and dancers new to ATS having lightbulb moments and really enjoying the dance. :-) What can I say? Thank you, thank you, thank you....

Tribal Pura vacancy

I had a place booked for the Glastonbury week end but have done something really stupid with my back, my son asked me to pick him up (12 years old and small for his age) so I did, no problem at that moment but I did feel the pressure on my lower back. As the day wore on I realised I had obviously done something after all, I have tried to rest it as much as possible but another set back today, in the garden washing children's toys, leant forward to reach something and Twang! in pain again. Can't believe this is happening, had to miss the Sam Hasthorpe workshop earlier in the year because a wasp stung me and made me really ill (throwing up, flu like symptoms etc). However, I do have a ticket to go to BDSS in Basingstoke now for Saturday night which is a bit of a consolation. Just hope nothing happens for the Majma festival that I have booked for next year, I am looking forward to C.N's floorwork class!
So who wants to go to Glasto this week end?! I have emailed Sarah to let her know so maybe she has a list of hopefuls for a last minute ticket.

Hi Tribal Dancer

Carolena Nericcio and Megha Gavin will be teaching for 3 days, more than 13 hrs during the Gathering of The Tribes event in August, 2-4.

The goal of the event is to get tribal dancers together, share their love for this danceform and create new contacts. Why not just to group together, combine the yearly vacation with a great possibility to dance with Megha and Carolena in "exotic" country like Finland?

The price of the WS is 200 euro (294 USD) - that makes about 15 euro (22 USD)/hour. Or the whole package including training and accommodation for 4 nights in the beautiful environment close to lake, including breakfasts, transportation to the place where the classes are held - and back, only 470 euro (691 USD).

Being comparing the prices I can say it's far more cheaper than any event around this topic in Europe this year. Workshop prices are normally around 20 euro (29 USD)/ hour and accommodation with workshops for the 4 nights can be 769 euro (1.131,00 USD) this very day. Don't forget the the bonus each can reach - additional free workshop for the group of 11. Use it to reduce the price from each or to get your own for free.

Good news is that this leaves a lot of space for travelling expenses.

Ask also group prices from your flight company - they might give some discount as well.

Is there any good reason not to come?

This is a store on ebay for Buyer BE WEAR
I was bidding on a lot of 6 skirts in which I was winning with a wonderful price so I thought. After the bidding got to $100, the seller put a BUY NOW price in the site so anyone that was bidding and wanted the lot of 6 for $89.00 could purchase it cheaper but the highest bidder was locked into paying the higher price. I paid ASAP and contacted the seller - ask if he would not make up the difference with sending extra wraps - just told me "TO BAD not he fault the bidding got so high"
So I left them a natural comment - and explain the change in auction after price was over $100. In return they give me a negative comment and misleading information my comments. I contacting him asking why the negative when all I did was be a great buyer by over paying within 10 min of the auction ending and only asking for him to balance the wrong doing on his part. Again "TOO BAD" "YOUR FAULT"
My reply...I will take my business and many other with me. HAVE A NICE DAY!

So with all that said - BUYERS BEWEAR....please please please....from one Tribal Goddess to another..PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SALER. There are many other seller on ebay - this guy does not deserve the belly dancer dollars!

This is a hand made costume. Both bra and belt are lined. The bra is very sturdy will hold it's shape well.The bra will fit a 36-38 B/C. This costume will work great for new students, hobbyist class recitals, parties, Goth night, belly fusion, photos, and performances.
This is an original one of a kind costume.

The bra will fit a 36-38 B/C. The bra cups are covered in a blue velvet panne' fabric. The bra is trimmed in a brown gimp trim about an inch wide, with a navy blue border. Beneath the trim is a belled and coined chain. At the center of the bra is an O-ring with a chain with bells attached. The side panels and the straps are made from the same fabric that covers the bra cups. The bra ties across the back kris- cross with D-rings. the bra straps are 48 inches long.

The belt is cover in the same fabric as the bra.This belt will fit a M-L(about up to a 14 in pant size and can be shortened) . The belt also has also has the same brown trim with the navy blue border. The belt is 37 inches long not including the tie ends. The tie ends are 18 inches long. The belt can be shortened if needed before it is shipped.The belt also has 3 Afghani pendants on it . 2 small silver ones and one large multi colored one at the center in the back. The ribbon fringe is made up of various yarns, lace, gimp trim and ribbon in various colors of blues and browns. On each side of the belt is there are silver belled and coined chain for sound and movement.
As stated before this is a one of a kind of original piece of wearable art

Looking for new ATS home

I'm so sad, I need to find a new ATS home. I am currently living in Charlotte, NC and taking ATS from Jenny of Potbelly, (formerly of Devyanni) but we are going to relocate soon to the Oklahoma City area and I will have to find a new home to dance in.

Any recommendations and or suggestions for a group in that area would be much appreciated!

The use of the term "Fat Chance Bellydance General Skills certified instructor"

Is there such a thing? Another dancer is using this title, which implies she is a "certified instructor", but I think she means she has completed the General Skills workshop. As I understand it, anyone who pays for the general skills workshop and shows up can then attest that they have completed "general skills", but this doesn't make them a "certified instructor".

Greetings all belly dancing beauties!

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

The creative mindset behind this idea, BBBD Meghan, asked BBBD Kamala Devi to chair this project, and with the help of some very motivated BBBD sisters, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from other BBBD sisters for the BBBD 2008 Calendar!

Thank you, to all who participated in Tribal:Pura Milwaukee this past weekend! I’m sure it will be a week or so before we feel we’ve processed everything in our minds. An open letter is insufficient thanks for the incredible people involved in this wonderful event, but I do want to publicly thank everyone for all they did.

Carolena and Megha and Mark and Ling Shien for creating these workshops and sharing so much valuable information. What a fun way to learn!

Carolena, Megha, Anita, Sandi, Wendy, Kristine, Marsha, Amy, Mark and Ling for traveling thousands of miles to perform together. I doubt I’ll ever see such a fabulous show again!

All of the performers who danced so beautifully. The show would not have been as grand without all of you.

My sisters in dance, Marie and Jen for the tough love we demand of each other. No HA!

Marie, for her vision (and Carolena for inspiring it) of our "Project" to show that, "It's all Belly Dance." Stef for working so hard to pull it off so beautifully and sucessfully. This was a tough secret/surprise to keep for over a year!

Mary Chang for being our Carol Burnett! You gave us a chance to take a breath and get into position for our performance.

Everyone who participated in the workshops. It was wonderful to dance and learn with so many enthusiastic dancers and musicians!

Our photographers, Olivia and Isabella. Incredibly professional and unobtrusive. The photos will be a treasure to all. I can’t wait to see how you captured everyone and everything with your creative vision!

Terri, for designing all of our printed materials, posters and programs, and website updates!

Emily, Amanda and Leize for hosting the nice after-party. It was really nice to just sit for a half hour and have a drink with you and some of the other dancers before we passed out Saturday nite.

The volunteers: our families, our students, our friends. We could NOT have done this without you. Our families gave up their entire weekends to man (and woman) tables, transport our special guests, help us to collect lunch, take tickets and usher, sweep the stage, clean up, support us, and so much more.

Our families for supporting us for the year and a half it took to plan this event. They have put up with our craziness, enthusiasm and us prioritizing our needs over theirs so much! A year and a half! That is how long we, Trillium have been a troupe. I guess I never really thought about how both ideas really blossomed together!

Deb, Sue, Jeannette and Margie, Zoh’ra, Sherri (and of course Carolena and Megha)-the vendors who hauled their lovely wares so far to share with everyone! Those chicks from Trillium Studio and Craftwise had some nice swag too!

The Scottish Rite Center and its employees for catering to our every need. A beautiful building and wonderful, kind people.

I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone. You are all fabulous.

Dancer in Need ... I feel so bad for asking, but...

It's official. I can't get my hands on a pair of zils for the pura. My brand new pair that was only used once, magically disappeared at a show I was at a few weeks ago. I have tried and tried to get my hands on a pair I can use -- but no luck. Suroyan was not shipping or doing orders when I went looking there last week. Now, nothing will make it here on time anyways.

So... does ANYONE who is going to be at the pura, have a pair of zils I can either purchase, or borrow?

Pretty, pretty please? I will hug you and be your new best friend.

I know myself and one of my extremely good friends are wanting to do a general skills certification and was wondering of this was possible if you were going to come to Santa Fe in 2008. I know that this kind of certification request should be made to Myra, but I wanted to be sure that you might be coming to NM in the fall.

Tribal:Pura Alaska Success

WOW! Tribal:Pura Alaska was amazing! I loved the topics, whoever picked those sure knew what she was doing (oh that's me ). What a great refresher course the basics were! We all need those as often as possible. I also love love love the temple dance warm-up. Your muscles, body , dance was incredibly informative. It helped me realize that so much has to do with how each persons body is built, and how to get to know your limitations and abilities. Tricks to spins and turns was also kick ass!! I love the egyptian basic cue to the 8-ct turn. I love love love love the barrel turn. Powerful presence was so helpful to make a powerful entrance and remember to wow your audience with how much fun it all is.
Thank you again and again for not only bringing ATS to the world, Carolena, but many thanks for bringing Tribal:Pura and the incredible Megha Gavin to us all. You two are perfect together!
We have had an incredibly positive response and much praise from the Alaska community regarding the workshop and show.
I can't wait to do this again!

Thank you beautiful ladies for coming all the way to Ak.! You braved the nasty weather and drunk waitresses to bring us wonderful Tribal wisdom! As much as I learned, I did not get enough and will be some what stalking you at other workshops for more!
I have to admit I was a little awestruck having you right here in the flesh.
I only hope to become half the dancer you two are. Your performance was absolutley beautiful! Thank you Carolina for all that you have done! With out you ATS wouldn't be, and I might not have ever learned to bellydance and have all the wonderful experiences I've had since learnig!

Thanks! We had a great time in DC for the 3rd annual Tribal Pura event. The show was really great and took place in a beautiful new performance space. And the final exercise of the workshops was a great success with all of the participants doing a fabulous group improv with everyone coming out in groups to dance together using the moves we'd covered over the 2 days. I was really impressed with how well everyone in the room worked together as one unit. It was awesome:-)

The general skills intensive is a 15 hour course, usually taken at the FCBD studio, with Carolena teaching. With only 20 people in Toronto, you will have Carolena and Megha teaching and coaching. You will receive instruction in anatomy as it applies to dance, music theory, instruction in all FCBD steps and concepts, drills, critique and question and answer time.

In order to attend this workshop, you MUST have prior ATS knowledge either via class, workshop or FCBD instructional dvds. This is a must - not an option. Usually a dvd or in-person assessment is required in order to qualify for registration, but this has been waived for this event. Do not disappoint Carolena or Megha - be well prepared with the material. All volumes of FCBD dvds can be purchased through Cleopatra's Bazaar or directly from FCBD.

Once completed, you will receive a General Skills for ATS certificate. It should be noted that completing this certification does not qualify one to be an authorized ATS teacher.

Also included in the registration are gourmet catered vegetarian lunches each day, water and juice for all participants.

Wow, I am almost speechless, but here goes
Tribal Pura was amazing, just to be in the presence of these wonderful and amazing women was awesome and most of all empowering. That is truly why I became enchanted by Belly Dance in the first place was the role of female power. I really feel so fortunate to have been able to learn from these ladies. The reason I started bellydancing was all related to one video "The Tattooed One" I saw that and it was truly the first time in my life I said to myself, "wow"....... I want to be one of those women, I want to be in that Tribe!!! They were beautifull, powerfull, gracefull, innovative and passionate and they still are!!! I just wanted to express my deep gratitude and love for Carolina and Megha, your performance was beatiful and breathtaking. Most of the workshops that I have taken leave me feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, but the Tribal Pura workshop really made me feel better than I did before.
I learned alot about stage presence and I was reminded of that powerfull ability we all have if we just present ourselves . I think that the mindfullness that is associated with improvisational choreography demands that you be present. After all thats what we like to watch not just moving bodies and skirts but swirling hearts and souls, we like to see "light " in peoples faces and minds because we need to be reminded of the good in the world, and the beauty in the world.
Again thank you for your time and energy, it was truly a wonderful workshop and show and I can hardly wait till next year!!!

Thanks ladies, for another great workshop in DC. We really enjoyed the positive energy and group efforts in the classes. The vibe in the improv choreography class was especially great. We had a great time with all the dancers who attended the first Tribal and Trance Festival in Blue Mountains, Australia. It was really nice to get to know so many dancers through private lessons and the show was top notch. Then we were stunned by the beauty of New Zealand and met even more fabulous people at the workshop there. We enjoyed the hafla dinner and especially loved seeing the improv session with all of the performers. And thanks to those who got up on stage with us after our performance. :-)

Special thanks to our very gracious hostesses, Devi Mamak and Beverly Dowling. We were so well taken care of and made to feel so comfortable in both places.

Thanks for posting pics.... I hope there are more to come since my camera broke on the trip.

No not - cues, or choreography but Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry - I know it's only October and pumpkins haven't been carved yet but I thought I'd do it anyway!

I had forgotten how beautiful Kentucky is.

The workshops were great, of course, because Lexington has a very good teacher in Theresa. And the new studio is incredible. I'm looking forward to many more visits to Lexington. :-)

I hope to see some pics from the event up on this page soon. I forgot to take my camera out of my purse the whole time we were there.

Preparation for workshops?

We are planning to attend the Tribal Pura workshop in Ashville - yeay! Now, I am wondering what preparation can help us get the most out of the workshop? I mean beyond the usual: bring gatorade, snacks, pen and pad, etc.

Background: I am an intermediate+ dancer, with the exception of 4 classes at the FCBD studio, I am VHS-taught in ATS, and in good physical shape.

What a great workshop this was! I was especially impressed with the improv choreography exercise at the end of the last class. I think I had a smile plastered on my face the whole time. :-)

Thanks to Elizabeth and Ocean for putting everything together and doing so much to make our stay in Evergreen comfortable and fun. We're really looking forward to getting back to Evergreen in the near future.

Are beginners welcome?
Our local bellydance troupe went when they were in Santa Fe and just raved about it. I am a student of the troupe leader. I wanted to go, but I wasn't sure if beginners were welcome.

Floor work warm-up

Hi,
I really learned a lot in the advanced workshop I took up in Santa Fe, NM this past weekend. However, I am a little concerned about warming up properly to practice the moves we learned. Carolena mentioned a yoga warm up, but we didn't do it, so I was wondering if you could post the list of asanas to do before working on the floor, especially the layback, which is gorgeous!
