This is an open invite to all to come and join us for regular monthly American Tribal Style belly dance nights on Friday evenings in Bristol.
This is not a workshop and there is no teacher, just a regular get together of like-minded people to go over moves and just dance, drill and practise!
You will need to have some basic knowledge of ATS although beginners can be accommodated.

We would also love anyone who is interested in drumming (darbuka, rik, frame drums, djembe etc) to come along and get involved. Some knowledge of Middle Eastern rhythms preferred but not essential.
In fact, why limit it to just drummers? Bring along any acoustic instrument but particularly anything from the Middle East!

£5 per person to go in the kitty each time, to cover room hire.
We are not trying to make money out of this, so any profit will be pumped back into keeping the sessions going.

This event falls on the last Friday of every month, 7.30pm - 9pm.
June's event will be on the 26th.

Venue: Pilates Moves Studio
Myrtle Street
Bedminster
Bristol
BS3 1JE

If you are interested in coming please PM me just so we can get an idea of numbers. Thanks :D

Sorry Eugenia, I hope you didn't show up to find the place empty. We've had a such a lack of response that we didn't do one this month.
We will re-post after the holidays when we have sorted out what we are doing.

Sadly there is a complete lack of interest in Tribal down in this part of the country - I have posted this in lots of places, not just on tribe, but nothing ever comes back!!

Oh well... maybe we are ahead of our time on this one lol. You'd think in a big city like Bristol there would be more people interested but I just don't think it has reached these shores yet.

Your Friday evening sessions sounded great. I am hoping my son will be moving to Bristol in the next few months which would give me a great excuse to get to a few Bristol events - and a place to stay.

It is weird how tribal doesn't seem to get much happening down this way (I'm in North Cornwall).
Cornwall should be heaving with Tribal dancers. It's not just tribal though - dance just seems to have died (except TV inspired ballroom and jive). I used to go a a great contemporary dance class as well as Egyptian/Tribal - now there is nothing I can find locally except Salsacise and jive.
Let's hope Arlene Phillips will take all dance under her wing, not just partner dance and young dancers.

I just don't recognise the thriving dance scene described in this article
          www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/...ofas.html
but I did recognise what this woman said in the comments
"I was recently in Lorient, Brittany on the day before the Celtic Festival. A band was practising so a friend and I had a coffee and sat down to listen. I so much wanted to dance, my entire body needed to move, but because I am much too old to dance in public, I just tapped my hand on the table.
I looked around to see who was dancing. No-one. Just faces staring at the band."

            Slightly more positive
            www.guardian.co.uk/society/...ance-tsar

Note the quotes from Sarah Cobley at Dance South West - but when I go to their website I don't anything of relevance to me
            (56ish wishing I was 30ish)
            www.dancesouthwest.org.uk/
Searching the site for tribal produced one irrelevant result, belly - nothing, tango, little, and nothing of interest or near me - Indian - nothing.
Kathak - dancer auditions in Huddersfield! African - Bath and Bristol only, Circle - nothing
Middle Eastern - one stunningly beautiful film clip which makes me want to see the rest of the film.
            www.dancesouthwest.org.uk/media...-exile

            And as for this
            www.danceandtheatrecornwall.co.uk/2...le
It smacks of my recurring nightmare of being stuffed in an old people's home with somebody leading group singing of "we all live in a yellow submarine" with appropriate hand waving and inane smiles. But perhaps I'm being unfair. It was the phrases "gentle exercises" and " easy to learn dances" that riled me.

Why do young people think that is all older people want! Or that they want to be coralled into "dance for older people"

The contemporary dance class I went to was a local evening class with all ages from 16 to over 60's - and she had us working really hard - no holds barred. It only stopped because the teacher had family problems, not lack of support.

Perhaps it is time to ask Dance South West what they are doing to support real community dance! or even just get up and do it dance.
Since the Arts Council changed their funding model and wiped out North Cornwall Arts, nothing happens down here where you can even just go and dance to a great band.

I guess I'm a bit cross tonight :-) but I really miss my dance.
