Ideas about how to gather the money

topic posted Fri, October 13, 2006 - 6:50 AM by  Corazon
I want to have a bunch of people involved, and with a core group that are all equal partners.

When people feel they have an equal say and share in the profits, they will work harder.

By next summer I could have $3000, and I'm sure we can find 12 other people who could too.

I like the idea of other friends buying into it with contributions of $500, which grants time-share privileges.

If each of the 12 could get a couple friends to give $500, we'd have what is needed to buy the ship.

If you only have $1000, but you want to be one of the 12, you'd need to find six friends to each contribute $500.

This will enable people who don't have all the cash a fair chance to be an equal partner.

This project is about figuring out how to get all our needs met, using all our networks and resources.

We will be an example demonstrating the power of unity.

These are small amounts of money. Any of us can do this in the coming year, and it could change the course of life forever.

Hey Cory, great to hear from you!

BTW, if I were you, I would look at allowing a relatively large number of
people to send $500 for a part-time piece of the action. Since most people
won't be available at the right place and the right time most of the time
(since the boat will be all over the world), this will allow for more funds
to make repairs and create a greater sustainable situation. Also, since the
AHN is a non-profit, you could set things up for donations (possibly
allowing anyone who makes a $500+ donation the possibility of coming aboard
on a part-time basis, and also setting up regular credit-card donations for
    those who would prefer that.

Do you have a lawyer helping you with all that? I do have a man in my men's
circle who might be able to give a hand!

Oh, and yes, my sweet love and I would love to help with the boat -- however
I think she would like to experience being on the boat before she jumps in
    as a part-time partner.

And that brings up the idea: Once you have the initial funds to get the
boat, you might want to invite anyone who wants to experience it, ask for a
donation, and if they really REALLY like it, the opportunity to make a total
donation of $500 to become a part-time partner.

What I see, ultimately, is a way to have a healthy conversation around $$
that is totally no-pressure, and make this sustainable venture monetarily.

lets make an action hero movie.....people can pay for it as a suggested donation through the action hero umbrella....we can use photo's and video....make narration...show what the future will be and how the money will be spent (on the boa!t).....We would be able to go pretty much anywhere in the world with a ship that size...Imagine!

That was interesting... I was just posting an email Fuzzy sent me, and there was only one other post on this thread -- my first one. As I was doing so, I got a strong feeling about Josh... and I wanted to email him asking why he has not joined the tribe already. After posting, I notice that Fuzzy and Josh had just joined the tribe in that moment, and Josh, Fuzzy and were all on this thread at the same time.

Glad to have you men in the circle. Everyone... if you don't know already... these two men are VERY TALENTED and CREATIVE people. They are smart and fun, and can get the job done!

So... Josh, Yes... documenting what we are doing with cameras. I'm all about it. David, has a project called Seascape, and he has this in mind too. I'll start drawing links to that and see where he is at with it.

Fuzzy, yes, I'll change the AHN donations page to reflect this project ASAP.

To keep people from hanging back... just watching to see how this develops, maybe we should create a pledge system.

If you want in on the $3000 level... speak up now, even if you don't have the money yet.

If there are ten others who are down with tossing it $3000, I'm sure it would be a lot easier to find the 11th and 12th people.

By doing a pledge system, there is little risk, and we'll all know who is serious.

Do you think that is a good idea? Do you think the amounts of $3000 and $500 are reasonable? Are 12 people too many?

The main idea I'm suggesting is that we don't need to call in the pledges until we have all the money we need. Once we have $45,000 in pledges, then we'll gather the cash.

I really think it will be encouraging and helpful for everyone to see who is down for the long haul. We are going to be sharing close quarters, so we'll want to know who all is involved.... the sooner the better.

It has been a few days now without any responce. Your thoughts and ideas please.

Who could be in with $3000 next winter?

Who wants to come here to see the ship? You have a beautiful place to stay on Grand Manan when you do.

I have the money. But I'm far from certain. What you are talking about feels like a big commitment, and I'm a commitment phobe at the moment.

I wonder if having a fundraiser would work for some of the money? I've been to so many incredibly parties and events that were fundraisers for Burning Man camps, and my friends threw a pretty good one with just a bunch of us volunteering what skills we had to make money for another friend's fledgling art studio.

Yes, fundraising parties would be great. Likely nothing will happen until after we meet in Roblito. I'd like to hear any ideas. Anyone can throw a party and that could take care of your $4000. Let people at your party know they could be partying on the ship a year from now. It is important for people to see themselves enjoying this ship.

I'm stoked by the high quality people showing up here, and I know we can make this happen.

I'd like to know your thoughts on the idea of having the ship owned by 12 people. That was just an even number I thought would be easy. Maybe we should do 13?

Maybe none of us will "own" it... and it just be its own boat that we get the pleasure of using. I am detached from owning it. Things that we own end up owning us. I feel that this ship can offer a lot of things to a lot of people, if we let it. It could be in the name of our non-profit, which may be best so we can fund it with donations.

And it is not just any ship. James built this ship with his own hands, and it has a long story. I'm glad to be buying this ship from my friend, James, ...to take it off his hands. It is a problem for him now. We can help him out and give it a new life. And it is not only the boat, he has an amazing property with a bunch of cabins, and we can stay there for free, and help him make that place even more beautiful. James is a talented and generous man. We all have a lot to gain by working together.

Lots of questions for you. Here's a couple to start with:

How many people can sleep comfortably on the boat?

What, if any, are the privileges of being a part-owner? If there are advantages, could people potentially sell their share, and others buy-in? Someone might be willing to put in a much bigger share if they could someday recoup some or all of their money.

Are you planning on stationing the boat somewhere, or traveling the world indefinitely?

How do you plan to pay for the upkeep of the ship - fuel, repairs, etc? This might be especially complicated if the joint-owners/travelers need to find ways to raise funds while traveling from port to port.
