I've been fortunate to grow up in a safe, stable environment, and have many extraordinary opportunities to travel and experience adventures.
I seek to create similar environments and opportunities for others who have not been as lucky to have a supportive a family.

i am a single mother of an eight year old who i just taught to swim, and i am not certain about where to start when it comes to the right type of boat for us. i reserve final desicions on anything until i am better informed on everything! sailboats seem to be a better price, but i don't have plans to travel long-term with another person besides my son, so i feel like something with a motor might be better, though i would like to get away from motors altogether, ultimately.

it will take me a while to save the money for this, so i have time to learn!

some questions:

*what is an average docking fee?
*what are the rules and regs for offshore travel (say, sf to portland, for starters)?
*if travelling by boat to say mexico, does one have to check in with some sort of port authority and show passports, etc? my son and i have been independent of his father for many years but i don't have full legal and he'd never give permission for my son to have a passpport, even though we have had no truck with him for 7 years now. i'd like to visit friends in peurto vallarta.
*how difficult is it to operate a boat by oneself?
* what type of boat is relatively affordable (older model) and preferable for the single person?

i'm certain i will hear lots of folks recommending that this type of life is not for the wimpy or materialistic...i am neither...please do not try to discourage me, just the plain facts are what i'm after so i can make up my own mind about what is right for us!

thank you so much!

Subject: Roman and Antje's Island Quest - Episode #4

Island Seekers Wanted!

Dear Friends,

Another five months have passed since our last newsletter. Those past

months have been intense in many ways. Roman has made serious progress as

far as the boat repairs are concerned while Antje was putting in place the

organic certification for the coconuts with our Thai contacts, but probably

the greatest news of all is that a new generation is on the way: We are

happy to announce that Antje is pregnant! We dearly hope that this new

being soon coming into this world will, thanks to our work with the

project, find shelter away from the "craziness" that sometimes surrounds

us.

The situation in Fiji seems chaotic. Ministers and government officials are

changing on a regular basis without apparent logical reason. The government

itself is far from being stable yet, which is ultimately not at all the

purpose of the current, so-called "interim government" anyways. After many

email exchanges with our contacts in Fiji, we decided to wait for better

times and explore other island options here in Central America in the

meantime. We came to the conclusion that even if we would push things

through now in Fiji, any agreement that would be reached with the interim

government may not give us the guarantees and stability we are looking for.

However, we leave our options open and are waiting for feedback from the

new minister in office.

In order to increase our chances of success, we opted for a general change

of strategy. We more and more came to see the sailboat as our first island

—one made out of steel with one major advantage: it moves and is able to

travel great distances. We are determined to use that particular feature to

the best we can for the benefit of the project.

With the island quest in mind, we envision a journey starting beginning of

2008 in Honduras and if necessary, may extent all the way to South East

Asia. We intend to visit countries such as Costa Rica, Panama, French

Polynesia, Cook Islands, Tonga, Samoa, Wallis and Futuna, Fiji, Vanuatu,

Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. The route will give us an

opportunity to potentially visit thousands of islands along the way. The

intention is to settle for the one island that feels right and gives the

best chances of success for the project. It may take several years to reach

Thailand especially if we explore many islands in between and take the time

to connect with the local population. However, we do keep in mind that

finding "The Island" can happen at any stage into the journey, may be as

early as Panama or Costa Rica, so we may not have to cover the entire

distance. Also, in case the Fiji deal goes through in the meantime, we

would head straight back to Fiji and start the project without further

delays. Once the island is found, the sailboat will serve as a home for the

core team, solar and wind-powered research station and transportation for

people and supplies.

As we want the boat to be absolutely safe and solid for years to come,

there is still some major work to do. Roman is currently working on the

boat alone in order to cut down expenses, so we were not able to meet our

previously mentioned April 2007 deadline. Minor repairs turned into a major

refit, which is fine since without Fiji being ready there is no real time

pressure. On the contrary, the extra time will give us an opportunity to

form a core team joining us on the boat and to put some more emphasis on

boat preparation before the big Pacific passage. The next hurricane-free

window for such a passage would be Spring of 2008.

One of the many challenges we will have to face is keeping up a raw food

supply during the ocean passages. In the cooked food context, world

cruisers heavily rely on canned foods. This is of course off limit for us,

so we are already thinking about ways to best conserve and even grow fresh

foods during the travel. Luckily the only long stretch of about one month

without land is between Panama to the Marquesas Islands (French Polynesia).

Other than that we will have weekly or biweekly supply opportunities.

The sailboat can host up to 6 adults and we believe that now is the right

time to welcome 2 to 4 additional people in order to build a strong team of

raw island seekers.

We are looking for a handful of pioneers who would like to join us on our

island quest. If you feel that you have the soul of an adventurer, boat

builder, tribe member, researcher and sailor all together, please contact

us.

As living with three or even five other people in the confined space of a

sailboat requires some affinity and serious people skills, we would like to

use the time between now and the beginning of next year to get to know you.

Working together as a team on the boat will be an excellent compatibility

test and will build the strong bonds necessary for the coming ocean and

team challenges. The last thing we would like to see happening is to

realize that there are "unreconcilable differences" once we are in the

middle of the Pacific ocean.

The island project having a scientific aim, people with degrees in related

fields and interest in research are particularly welcome, but this is not

an absolute requirement.

Of course, the journey as wonderful as it might seem does include some

obvious risks, even though we will do whatever we can to keep those risks

to the bare minimum for us and those who join us. We will make sure we have

the necessary safety and navigation equipment. Please consider these risks

as well, should you consider joining the adventure.

In any event, the first step in joining us is to send us an email

introducing yourself if possible with picture (unless we know you already).

Call us on skype soon after and we will take it from there. Our skype

handle is genefit.

Leadership By Design:
How One Individual Can Change The World

Leadership Principles of Buckminster Fuller

by Medard Gabel and Jim Walker

He didn’t head up an army or corporation, wasn’t elected to any public office, was not the leader of a foundation, and wasn’t wealthy. In fact, he had none of the trappings most people usually associate with leadership – yet Buckminster Fuller’s leadership surely changed the world during the 20th century, and his impact continues into this century as well.

How did he accomplish this? What were the tools of leadership that he employed? Fuller himself often used the phrase “comprehensive anticipatory design science” to describe the far-reaching scope of his work and research efforts. In this article, we introduce a framework of leadership which we call “comprehensive anticipatory design leadership”. Through a careful study of Fuller’s writings, inventions, and methodologies what emerges is a powerful blueprint for problem-solving leadership in an age of rapid change – a leadership approach that has implications far beyond the field of technological innovation. In fact, we believe that Fuller’s problem-solving leadership skills are not only useful for changing the world – but can also be used when addressing the equally challenging task of changing your own local organization or business.

10 Principles for Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Leadership

So what can Fuller’s approach to life, change, technology, and design teach us about leadership? What do we mean by “comprehensive anticipatory design leadership”? Before exploring the specific principles that we uncovered, it is important to appreciate the rigorous, tenacious, and inspired patterns of thought that led to some of Fuller’s most impressive breakthroughs. As Fuller himself described,

“I always say to myself: What is the most important thing we can think about at this extraordinary moment?”

This was no mere platitude – but in many ways summarizes Fuller’s entire leadership philosophy. Fuller was always considering not just important things – but perpetually attempting to discern the most important things and placing them in the context of extraordinary times. In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that there were few other passengers aboard Spaceship Earth during the 20th century so keenly aware, and deeply appreciative of the extraordinary changes that were unfolding – as if waiting along the path of history in an almost childlike state of expectant grace. Forces set in motion eons ago were blossoming all around him, giving birth to titanic changes and truly astounding inventions, some already in hand – others just around the corner - and Bucky Fuller was absolutely thrilled to be there, helping nudge things along in ways he alone could imagine. It was his values and vision of a perfectible society, along with his razor sharp awareness of social and technological trends, combined with a relentless dedication to focus – really focus - on the most important things - that served as the foundation for his wide-ranging contributions and impact.

1. Think Comprehensively

“I always start with the Universe.”

Throughout his career, Fuller demonstrated an unwavering dedication to framing problems in their widest possible context. When first encountering his writings, it is difficult to appreciate Fuller’s wide angle view on the world and the Universe. Armed with a poet’s imagination, and a scientist’s exhaustive inventory of the entire Universe – he could literally zoom out from a given problem in countless distant directions until he spied the remote fundamental cause that needed to be changed. Not just changed – revolutionized. If these upstream interconnections and causative factors could be addressed in a carefully comprehensive and decisive fashion, then Fuller had confidence that downstream matters would inevitably right themselves with a minimum of stress.

In terms of leadership, this means taking the time, and having the courage, to frame challenges clearly by digging into their root causes or the formative forces that brought them into being— and seeing the opportunities that are always present. Instead of trying to convince people to change their behavior, Fuller sought to change the environment that drove those behaviors. By providing a new or altered environment, Fuller’s leadership provided a new logic that lead to new behaviors and outcomes. At the core of this approach was a respect for the individual and their decisions.

2. Anticipate The Future

Buckminster Fuller was ahead of his times – so much so that many of his insights, proposals and inventions were literally decades ahead of their era. Whether it was his 1930’s Dymaxion car that would look at home at the latest car shows; or his “World Design Science Decade” proposal which has morphed into today’s UN Millennium Development Goals; or his geodesic geometry that was discovered as a core design principle at the molecular level (the aptly named buckminster fullerene carbon atom C60 or “BuckyBall” )— Fuller had a well honed ability to anticipate the future.

Fuller was exquisitely in touch with trends, especially technological, world resource, and human need trends – enabling him to not only forecast the future, but allowing him to anticipate both upcoming problems and their optimal solutions. Almost like a great waiter is able to service tables and anticipate guests needs without your even asking, Fuller was able to anticipate what the world would need at critical junctures, and then offer up both the philosophical framework and practical tools for solving those issues.

For leaders, trend-spotting not only involves a feel for timing, but it also requires the ability to tune into the relevant topics, tune out the noise, and to act at the right time. Picking up on so called “weak signals” long before anyone else is paying attention is a key habit which leaders must develop if they are to accurately anticipate and respond to future needs.

3. Respect Gestation Rates

Not only did Fuller’s trend-spotting make him aware of what types of progress were likely to occur, but he was also very in tune with the timing of these changes. He often pointed out that everything has its own gestation rate. A baby takes 9 months, a new computer chip 18 months, an elephant 22 months, and an automobile three to five years. . Critical Path, one of his better known books, details literally hundreds of years of human technological “gestation”. In the second-half of the 20th century, these gestation rates began to pick up in speed and frequency as one set of technological breakthroughs would impact on another. Recently, inventor Ray Kurzweil – very much in the Fuller tradition – has carefully documented in his book Singularity that even the change in the rate of change itself is accelerating. Fuller referred to this phenomenon, back in the 1960s, as accelerating acceleration.

The implications of accelerated gestation rates on leadership are profound. Carefully identifying and then synchronizing with the gestations rates of various changes you are facing helps insure that your solution, invention, plan, or reorganization arrives at just the right moment. If you arrive too early either in the actual marketplace or the marketplace of ideas – your solution runs the risk of being still born; it will not gain traction. If you are late to market – then chances are that your solution will be forever playing catch-up to the established solution.

4. Envision The Best Possible Future

Fuller also used another technique for coming to grips with the future. This approach did not involve predicting or forecasting where different technological or resource trends were heading, but envisioning what the world should be like. Over the course of his life, Fuller developed a comprehensive moral vision that told him what the world should look like given our technological capabilities - a world where everyone’s basic human needs were met, the environment sustained or regenerated, and a world safe and secure from the threats of war and social injustice were three of the linchpins of his vision for how the world should be. Many people found this “big picture” moral vision to be just as attractive and inspiring as his technological artifacts.

The take away for leaders is that not only are vision statements powerful tools for bringing about change – but that often people respond more enthusiastically to big and inspiring challenges than safe incremental change.

5. Be A “Trimtab”

Something hit me very hard once, thinking about what one little man could do. Think of the Queen Mary - the whole ship goes by and then comes the rudder. And there's a tiny thing at the edge of the rudder called a trim tab. It's a miniature rudder. Just moving the little trim tab builds a low pressure that pulls the rudder around. Takes almost no effort at all. So I said that the little individual can be a trim tab. Society thinks it's going right by you, that it's left you altogether. But if you're doing dynamic things mentally, the fact is that you can just put your foot out like that and the whole big ship of state is going to go. So I said, call me Trim Tab.

Fuller’s effigy “Call Me Trimtab” is rather unique. As described above, a trimtab is a nautical device that acts as a small rudder used to turn the larger rudder of giant ships, offering tremendous leverage in terms of steering and changing the direction of the ship. Fuller, drawing upon his naval experience, saw the trimtab as a powerful metaphor for effective individual leadership: small and strategically placed interventions can cause large-scale and profound change. What makes this metaphor interesting is that the ship Fuller was referring to could be the entire planet, or any local system you are desiring to steer or change direction. To understand the full dimensions of the metaphor you need a clear understanding of the current direction of the “ship”, the flow of the currents it is moving through, the knowledge of where it is heading, and a vision of where the ship ought to be heading—as well as understanding where and how to apply pressure on the rudder to bring about change. As we have seen, Fuller had a strong vision for all these trimtab attributes. What is also interesting about a trimtab is that it efficiently brings about change with minimum effort – in other words – doing more with less – another of Fullers’ key principles.

The guiding questions for everyday leadership that emerge from a trimtab approach are easy to list – but much more difficult to execute:

a What ship are you steering?
Are you trying to change the entire world? Or maybe just your own department? What is the system you are seeking to steer or change direction?

b What direction is your ship currently heading?
This often requires careful discernment and reflection. What is the “big picture” direction and destination?

c What outside currents, winds, tides, or events are impacting your ship? Sometimes these are obvious, and close at hand – but oftentimes they are remote either geographically, in time, or functionally, and it requires special instruments and measurements to gauge these outside factors.

d Where ought your ship be going?
This is often the most critical question of leadership. What is the goal, the prize, which you need to keep in sight so that your regular adjustments to the tiller, in response to the changing currents of the environment, will keep you on target? What is the big picture goal, not next quarter’s profit margin, share price, or units delivered—but the overarching social good? How will your efforts help to increase overall global well-being?

e Where can you most efficiently exert pressure for “moving the rudder”? Answering this question accurately is only possible if you’ve taken the time to answer the previous questions! In the system you are seeking to steer, what is the rudder, what is the trimtab? In complex social systems, it is often instructive to ask, what is the rudder of the obvious rudder or the trimtab of the trimtab? These “trimtabs of the trimtab” need to be identified so that the least amount of effort is needed to change the system.

f How can you most efficiently exert pressure for “moving the rudder”? Once you understand where you are going, and where change needs to happen in order to move in that new direction – the final step is to envision and plan how to make the change happen. Fuller had great faith in the individual’s ability to build artifacts, tools, and creative responses that would “move the rudder”. Not only that, but he recognized that each person would make his or her own unique contributions, based on their skillsets, life-history and available resources. The point is not for everyone to go out and invent new types of geodesic domes – rather, each person should be equally inventive in their own way.

g How do you continue to navigate successfully through changing tides? One of the most remarkable things about Fuller’s life is that he was able to reinvent himself and his particular area of focus on several occasions – while keeping his core values constant. Then drawing on the knowledge and experience from one phase, he was able to realize even higher levels of creativity and inventive breakthroughs than in the previous phase. This process of continual learning, creation, modification, and synthesis culminated in his global lectures during the 1960s when he spoke on hundreds of college campuses – captivating the younger generation with literally a lifetime of insight, observation, and wisdom. In steering by key guiding principles, Fuller was able to navigate a complex century, making a unique and lasting contribution.

Not every leader is destined to be the same sort of “trimtab” that Fuller was – but every leader can gain valuable insights from his highly leveraged approach and sea-faring and navigation mindset.

6. Take Individual Initiative

By honing and honoring individual perspective and initiative, Fuller was able to take the lead on a variety of issues. Fuller was not seeking to be a “leader” in any conventional political or economic sense – he saw what needed to be done to make the world a better place and which no one else was attending to, and, being true to himself –dared to go off in directions that the typical crowd-following individual did not ever dream of going. His approach was an anti-“Big Man” leader, or anti central supreme authority style of leadership. He felt that everyone should be and is a leader . . . of at least of their own life.

For leaders, Fuller’s approach demonstrates that you don’t need to have the job or be the expert or have money to make a difference. Every individual should feel empowered to make his or her own contribution – whether or not they’ve received some sort of official blessing or sanction. Interestingly, even the biggest of corporations now recognize the need for self-motivated individuals to work on projects and ideas in the unexplored market areas. This is not just an altruistic act on their part – rather, these companies recognize that their future market success depends on creating and capturing entirely new markets, and that these markets are almost always driven into being by the dedication and motivation of a just a few individuals.

7. Ask The Obvious And “Naïve” Questions

Sometimes leadership involves nothing more than simply asking the obvious questions. “Why do we do things in this way?” “Gee.. I don’t know – that’s the way we’ve always done it.”

For Fuller, his basic questions typically took on a big picture view: “With our expanding technical resources – why can’t we commit to feeding and clothing everyone on the planet?” “Why can’t we design homes that are easy and inexpensive to build?” “What is wealth?” “Why shouldn’t wealth continue to increase as our knowledge of technology grows exponentially?” “Why don’t we simply look at how nature builds things, and then build our own structures accordingly?” Part of the power of these questions lies in the fact that they spring from individual observation and inspiration, and are not dependent on a committee, policy, procedure, official edict. or dogma that no company or group has thought to address because they hadn’t thought to ask the obvious questions.

For leaders, sometimes the best way to initiate change is to simply ask the appropriate and perhaps naïve-sounding questions. The answers can often bring about a surprising jolt of action!

8. Do More With Less

“Real wealth is indestructible and without practical limit. It can be neither created nor lost – and it leaves one system only to join another – the Law of Conservation of Energy. Real wealth is not gold. Real wealth is knowing what to do with energy.”

Many people continue to mistake money for wealth, but capital itself has become a vast manufactured commodity circling around the Earth in search of true productive wealth. And what is productive wealth? Knowing how to do more with less. Any technology or system of technology that can create more output with less input will rapidly gain influence in today’s hyperlinked global economy. Whether it is the Toyota hybrid car delivering more miles to the gallon, or a new computer delivering more computing power per dollar, or Google delivering broader and faster searches per click, or Dell sourcing component parts from all across the world in order to deliver the cheapest and most powerful computers, – wealth today flows to the organizations and individuals who can use creativity and initiative to get more done with less. Fuller was impatient with artificial financial schemes. His view on wealth also made him pragmatically optimistic regarding humankind’s ability to feed and cloth the passengers here on Spaceship Earth. Fuller’s equation for physical success of humanity can be summarized fairly succinctly:

A. True wealth = Resources + Human know-how applied to meet needs
.
B. You can never learn less, you can only learn more, so therefore wealth is increasing as we increase our understanding of the world, ourselves and the Universe

Thus – while the supply of raw materials is a zero-sum game, and leads to a scarcity mentality –the wild card in wealth creation that breaks the zero-sum standoff is human ingenuity, allowing us to accomplish more and more with less and less. Fuller was convinced that every individual could make a contribution to this overall cycle of wealth creation. For leaders, this means recognizing and encouraging everyone in the organization to contribute on a consistent and inspired basis.

9. Seek To Reform The Environment, Not Man

The function of what I call design science is to solve problems by introducing into the environment new artifacts, the availability of which will induce their spontaneous employment by humans and thus, coincidentally, cause humans to abandon their previous problem-producing behaviors and devices. For example, when humans have a vital need to cross the roaring rapids of a river, as a design scientist I would design them a bridge, causing them, I am sure, to abandon spontaneously and forever the risking of their lives by trying to swim to the other shore. (See bottom of page 2.)

Flowing out of his trimtab philosophy, Fuller came to the conclusion the most effective leverage can almost always be found not by trying to change habit ridden men and women – but by reforming the physical infrastructure in which they live and worked. Thus, many of his projects focused on large complex systems such as housing, automobiles, energy, etc. Fuller was convinced that if these large scale systems could be optimized with a view towards maximizing actual human gain rather than measured by financial statements, then there would be a broad impact on human society as whole.

For leaders interested in “making the world a better place” – the implication is that reforming the physical environment can often have a large impact on people’s behavior.

10. Solve Problems Through Action

Man knows so much and does so little.

Fuller was never one to merely theorize about how things ought to be, and his creative portfolio, spanning nearly six decades of continuous leadership and invention is testimony to a hands-on, involved, and action-centered life. Beginning early in the 20th century, his creative portfolio documents a truly stunning range of projects (from shelters to flying cars, bathrooms, floating cities and social policy), interests (from geometry, to cosmology, architecture, technology, and humanity’s function in the Universe), writings (27 books, hundreds of articles and thousands of letters corresponding with people all over the world), as well as drawings, photographs, videotapes, and observations,. His Chronofile documents his effort “to see what one ordinary person could accomplish.” Fuller received 28 US Patents and circled the globe more than 50 times, lecturing to audiences all over the world. The scope of his curiosity, and range of technical and artistic pursuits were united by a common thread of providing humanity with tools and artifacts for the benefit of all. Another thing to note is that not only did Fuller choose interesting projects to pursue, but his metrics for success were often at odds with the prevailing wisdom and values. The value he put on money reflected his big picture views on much of society’s other sacred cows. He saw money as a means to further his explorations in “making the world work for 100% of humanity” but it had little intrinsic value.

For leaders looking to solve problems, Fuller example of an action-filled life should serve as tremendous inspiration. Not only did Fuller’s actions and projects bring him great satisfaction over the years – regardless of their immediate impact – but as his portfolio of efforts grew, they served as inspiration for even greater breakthroughs.

Conclusion

If humanity does not opt for integrity we are through completely. It is absolutely touch and go. Each one of us could make the difference.

Here in the early 21st century, the Internet – by offering individuals almost unlimited access to information - has made Fuller’s Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Leadership approach even more powerful than ever:
• Think Comprehensively
• Anticipate The Future
• Respect Gestation Rates
• Envision The Best Possible Future
• Be A Trimtab
• Take Individual Initiative
• Ask The Obvious And Naïve Questions
• Do More With Less
• Seek To Reform The Environment, Not Man
• Solve Problems Through Action

In following these 10 principles, there is no telling what a single ordinary leader will be able to accomplish!

I spend a lot of time online organizing thoughts, projects and projections. It is like a game, a mystery... a mystory. I create a character and find others to play and carry out missions.

A friend introduced me to Warcraft a few days ago. It is an endless online game with thousands of players in a massive world all playing together. This guy plays all day and night, forgetting to pick up clothes at the cleaners and unable to walk around the corner to get takeout sushi... cuz sometimes these quests take hours to complete. He talks to other players just by pressing a button on the keyboard, and everyone stays in character, playing along with the scene. Totally D&D geek stuff.

I am looking at WarCraft thinking it could easily be merged with Tribe.net ...and all of us could chat around a virtual campfire, using our real voices. We could do it now if we paid $15 a month to be part of the game. Not that it is my ideal... cuz real campfires are where it is at... but I saw this as the next level in making things real before they are real. My friend spends days on end playing this game, and it is all for nothing. In the end, he has nothing to show for the life spent. All the crystal balls collected were nothing more than pixels that vanish like pixie dust.

I need sleep, so I can surf tomorrow... for real... not like I have all day today on this computer. This tribe is a means to an end. I can see us together sailing a large ship... or maybe two... far far away from current realities.

I am forming an eco-tourism project here in Mexico, but that is not what this ship collective is about. I want the ship to benefit from the bizy-ness... but there is no ship without the collective. The ship is an experiment in community building... it is not "ego-tourism", as Leaf so perfectly put it.

I do not want to be the leader nor the captain of this ship collective. We will make better decisions as a whole and be far more motivated and resourceful if everyone sees this as their baby. If it is your dream to sail the seas in search of new lands and live with a crew of loving souls in small spaces, I am giving you the chance to make it happen through my connections.

Two beautiful men own two beautiful ships, and they are seeking good people to take these boats on grand adventures. I see what could be done with these ships, and it pains me to know they sit at the docks day after day as the sea calls to them.

My main focus in life is social change, and I am not talking about playing this computer game... forwarding emails and making posts about my ego trip. We have the opportunity to use this modern wizardery with the tools and knowledge of past generations, to make fun-and-mental changes in the way massive amounts of people live, so that we can all stop the maddness which is the current norm, and get on with tending the garden of eden.

With this new eco-tourism busy-ness, and the Roblito project moving along as it is, I have little time to organize the Tribal Spaceship. I really want to see it happen, but if there isn't enough interest from those who have already joined the tribe to step up and take part in some way, I guess we are not ready for it yet.

Don't wait until everything is lined up and the ships are ready to sail. If you want to take part, start now, and let's hear about it.

How can you serve this collective?
Can you meet on Grand Manan Island this summer?
When is best?
If you can't, do you know others who would be into it, or do you have something else to offer?

Lots of people have joined this tribe, now let's see who really wants to take part.

If you don't add yourself to this thread, and stay intouch... which means keep posting to share how you are dreaming this experience into being... you are not part of this project. I am not saying it is not open. The key is showing up in circle.

You don't need to drop your life as it is now. Just picture yourself playing with fun people in warm waters while folks in the north country are freezing their asses off. Between now and then, we are going to play a game called getting organized.

Relationships and common goals are what will bring us together.

G'night ship mates!

An email from Brenda just arrived, saying she and a few others from the common vision fruit tree tour (see below) are keen to do the Tribal Spaceship. Kelli in Montreal says she is dreaming about sailing, and David of SF Green Map fame is keen. Since being in Mexico working on the Roblito project and Palmillas project, I have not had time to put much into rounding others up for the ship. 48 people are in the spaceship tribe( http://tribes.tribe.net/tribalspaceship ), but we need to know who is really committed.

Leaf, from BC, who I met here in Mazatlan, has an 84ft ship and is keen to use it for collective education. It was bought several years ago by a community in the way I am suggesting we buy James´s ship, but the others who bought it lost interest, so it sits at the dock, waiting for us to sail it into the sunset. And Leaf is an amazing person... very kind and brilliant... a person I would enjoy spending my life with. A great dreamer and teacher.

The fact is, this sort of mission takes a large number of committed people. It takes a tight community. If Leaf, myself and you don´t find enough people who want on board, it is not happening. We could even have two ships... starting with the one James owns, and sailing that to Mazatlan this coming fall. The 84ft ship is a serious ocean-crosser. The 45ft schooner could just stay based in the sea of Cortez, and work with the Palmillas project. Right now, two ships sit wasting at the dock.

This is not about a small circle of friends sailing around. This is about working together for the greater good, and the fact that our tribe of warriors needs ships to do that in this time of insane border regulations and blood for oil. This is about saving the planet... and if you don´t see that, or if you think that is stupid, then this is not the project for you.

We need to know who is down with committing to working together. Forget my ego. Forget yer ego. Forget ¨I don´t have the money.¨ If we want it, we can have it. We can live this dream and create the life we want. This is going to be a challenge and I can´t think of anything more exciting.

James Bates has cabins and land on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, where his schooner is docked, and where we can freely gather and live to work toward to this sailing mission. We can make money working with tourists and the community on the island as well, cuz I know that is an issue for most of us. They have a new community center and town mayor is open to working with us.

Have fun whatever you do, and if I can help in anyway, please ask.

At your service,
Cor

Hi family and friends,

I've included you in the email list to receive the new weekly e-zine, Harvest Rhythms, a multi-media online newsletter and community forumn celebrating the experience of Common Vision's fourth annual Fruit Tree Tour through words, pictures, sound, and video.

The first edition of the newsletter was sent out awhile ago, but you should be getting it forwarded it to you in the next day or two.

This is my second year joining the Common Vision crew to be part of the spring Fruit Tree Tour: a 20-city, 70-day tour planting over 1000 fruit trees at urban schools from San Diego to Sacremento. Traveling in the world's largest veggie oil-powered caravan, 25-earth educators from Common Vision teach students about sustainable ecology through a daylong program that includes West African agricultural drumming and earth-conscious hip-hop.

The goal of this annual tour is to develop working relationships with teachers and administrators to integrate sustainability into schools' curricula and landscapes. I'm excited to return again as a dancer, tree-planter, and earth-educator. I hope you enjoy reading about the works we are doing in schools and communities across California.

If you dont wish to be on this list, you can unsubscribe by clicking the link at the bottom of the newsletter.

If you know of someone who maybe interested in receiving the newsletter, please feel free to forward them the newsletter, or have them subscribe by contacting us at info@commonvision.org

Thanks,
love and bright blessings,

Hi Cory

I have been having a lot of trouble getting on line, it now aperies there is something wrong with my computer and if that isn’t enough my webmail server has been bouncing my mail and while answering some reservations on a friends computer a page of incoming mail disappeared.
It makes me a little uptight when I know that I’m losing business and much needed income.
I did receive some mail from you but lost it after I read it so I can’t refer back to it to answer all the issues raised.

Concerns.

Cement boats are hard to dock.

As with life, all things with boats are choices and compromises.
Heavy displacement boats are harder to stop then light displacement boats of equal power.
Light boats are generally faster and easer to handle in a harbour then heavy boats.
Heavy boats are more comfortable riding and easer to handle in big seas
Boats with fin keels tack or come about quicker and easer then boats with full length keels (which the schooner has).
Full length keeled boats are easer to keep on course in big seas and less likely to broach.
Any boat which has any metal such as through hull fittings, drive shaft’s, props, bolts, outside ballast etc must be grounded to each other and to a zinc to keep electrolysis from eating the metal parts. I suspect the cement boat that some one said leaked so badly had been left without zincs. All boats with through hulls and motors when left in the water with no zincs will start to leak.
The only places in the hull I have had to repair because deterioration was the cock pit deck and the top edge of the forward cabin I have had to put a layer of epoxy and fiberglass on it and the cockpit deck about 12 years ago to keep them sound. It appears the heat from the engine combined with the flexing of the deck from the mast put hair line cracks in the surface where the salt water could infiltrate, sit and cause the reinforcing rod to corrode expand and cause the cement to chip away.

Having a marine serva done is a good idea. The last serva was done maybe 10 years or more ago. I’m sure there is a copy of it in the Coast Guard folder back at the Marsh. The last time it passed Coast Guard safety inspection for her passenger caring certificate was 04.
But in the end I could take you through the boat and give you more information on what may be of concern to anybody who was planning to sail her on an long offshore voyage.

The $35000 price would be the cost of the boat in a condition capable of making a safe voyage to Caribbean and back. That is The boat will be safer then it was when we set sail from the pacific north west in 1980.

An important part of making a safe voyage is the attitude each member of the crew toward seamanship and excepting responsibilities.
Some people find
• Rules and keeping tools and equipment organized restricting to there flow in life.
• Having to keep there personal gear out of communal spaces a difficult task.
• Accepting some one as the leader or taking a leadership roll because of there skill or knowledge doesn’t fit there belief system.
• They are unable to get along with a member of the crew.
• They are not cut out for life aboard but stay because of money matters , romance or lack of other interests.

All these things endanger the boat and crew at sea and compromise the joy of the voyage when in port

Boats are a lot of work (some of it dirty and strenuous) for the amount of time spent sailing. People need to be flexible, communicative and willing to pull more then there share of the load.
Then you have a spaceship like no other.

Anyone who is serious about getting involved in this adventure would do well to read some books
• Chapmans book on seamanship.
• The 12 volt doctor.
• Something on provisioning and cooking on sea voyages.
• Sailing directions for the areas your interested in sailing.

I found the most difficult skill to master to be anchoring. Having the right anchors and gear and learning how to handle them is important and is especially so to any one who is running in waters prone to hurricanes on a small budget.

I’m willing to take time to teach people how to sail after my business chores are taken care of, if they are willing to put the labor into the making the boat ready to sail.
I will supply a cabin to live in (and help with refitting it for your use) until the boat is ready for habitation.
There will be some opportunities for sum members of your crew to earn money helping me prepare the retreat for the season and in its operation. However I will need to know who is interested and when they can start before the end of Feb.
The garden is currently under utilized and is available to any one who wants to prepare, plant and care for it. I will supply the seed, tools and information. If done right you could sail with a lot of good organic self raised food. Very one should agree to put at least one hour a day in the garden.
I still have a lot of containers for supplies and spare parts and pieces and would love to see the boat geared up for a cruse.
I will be happy to teach anyone who is interested how to sail navigate and maintain the boat as well as the use of various building tools as long as they agree to practice all the safety rules.

I’m in need some helpers who are willing and able to do a wide variety of jobs and can help me with
1. keep all our help focused on the priorities.(including me)
2. Keep track of there time and materials on the computer.
3. work shop leaders obtain what they need,
4. computer work, reservations, e-mail, letter writing, internet searches etc.
5. design and or facilitate work shops, hikes, island interest tours, kids games, pot luck dinners, dances
6. coordinate supplies and crew for boat trips and land projects, (we will be doing nature study picnics on some of the offshore islands this season)
7. Focus marketing using all methods to promote group workshops.
8. a run and fetch it person.
9. cabin cleaning
10. preparing and cook for your crew, our crew other families etc?

Some of these are things that need to be covered. Others could add to our experience, knowledge and/or finances. Some of these jobs can be done by different people at different times others I need a commitment from someone.
The important thing is if you agree to do a job then you need to follow it through. If a person finds they can’t live up to there agreement for some reason they need to communicate with me and the rest of us who are involved so we can get the job covered with as little disruption to the flow as possible.

It is probably easiest for all concerned if all those who are interested in this boat venture gathered together at the Castalia Marsh Retreat in May and lay out a game plan.

If you decide you don’t want the boat I need to know before the end of June so I can put it on the market.

With all my internet email problems and the amount of things on my todo list I have been unable to find time to connect with the tribe site and utilize its opportunities.
Let me know how you think we should proceed.

Hugs
James

¨Peace Boat carries out its main activities through a chartered passenger ship that travels the world on peace voyages. Three Global Voyages and one short Asian regional voyage are usually organized each year. The three-month Global Voyages are each joined by around 800 participants and visit between 15-20 countries.

The ship, as a neutral space beyond borders, becomes a floating peace village, encouraging a sense of community and enabling direct dialogue between those onboard and in the ports that we visit.

Solara's July 2006 Surf Report:

Into the Big Boats

June went out with a huge splash... more like a mini tsunami. Mega Quantum Surf swept in and inundated everything. The energies powerfully pushed us towards our new directions. Many situations reached their crisis point, some people became unbalanced, unhealthy relationships were pulled apart.

The Surf is rising throughout July. The waves are getting increasingly larger. The Quantum Surf isn't going to suddenly stop or go away. Instead, it's something that we need to get used to. Big Waves are becoming our New Normal. We know that we cannot ride Big Waves in small boats, yet many of us are still trying to do exactly that.

In many ways July is a critical month, for any small boats that we still cling onto will eventually get broken apart in the Surging Surf. It's time to jump ship and leap into the Big Boats with our full beings. Once we do this, riding the waves of the Quantum Surf will actually become fun. It's wild for sure, but it's definitely not boring! And they will take us just where we most want to go.

Part of the process of jumping ship requires that we honestly face any remaining fears of or resistance to stepping into our whole being, of doing what we can here to do, of being responsible for our own selves and own emotions, and for our One Being and of embracing LIFE itself. Once we see where these fears and resistances reside within us, then we must do everything we can to dissolve them once and for all. We can no longer live in the world of fears, doubts and resistance.

Nor can we travel further until this is done. We can try to stay in our small boats, justifying our actions with a profusion of excuses; we can repaint our small boat so it might appear a bit larger; we can plaster it with spiritual and religious symbols; we can angrily lash out at those who are already in large boats to cover up our real anger and frustration at our own perceived limitations and lack of courage, but all of it will not alter the fact that we are still in a small boat. All small boats are going to have a rough ride in the times to come.

For some, June's Quantum Surf brought up another layer of long submerged issues to be resolved, major core issues and emotional patterns that have long held us back. Now here they are, right in front of our faces, and there is no turning away from them.

We don't have the option of turning back since we have already entered the realm of NO DOWN - NO RETURN. We cannot remain paralyzed in inaction for much longer. We have to honestly and courageously face what's in front of us and move through it. We have to bring these core issues to a final resolution so we can go forward on a totally new level. We do this by repatterning them, changing them into a new configuration so the old pattern no longer exists.

It's almost a NOW or NEVER situation; if we don't do it now, we will miss out on the wondrous breakthroughs coming our way. If we don't start doing what we came here to do, either it won't get done or someone else will do our true purpose instead of us. We will have literally "missed the boat".

One of the first things to do is to totally accept our present circumstances. Accept where you are RIGHT NOW. This is the canvas you have to work on. The foundation of all that is to come. Now start recalibrating your present reality from within. Add some beautiful colors to your canvas. Perhaps, a bright glowing Sun. Some flowers. Whatever makes you happy. Start incorporating these elements into your daily life. Raise the resonance of your being. Raise the resonance of whatever is around you. Fill your surroundings with Love. Fill your being with Love.

All year long, we've been putting together a huge picture puzzle, trying to see the details of our new lives. Large segments of the puzzle are now coming together and the true picture is steadily emerging. What we are now discovering is that some of our puzzle pieces have been put into the wrong positions; this is why we couldn't achieve many of the things that we really wanted to do. This month, we are able to clearly see which pieces need to be moved to new locations. Which of our concepts and perceptions are invalid or limited. Which of our emotions need to be refined and recalibrated. And in July, we will be busy moving them into their rightful positions.

Once we do this, we will be amazed at how quickly things fall into place. July will bring major resolutions and major steps forward. We will experience sudden revelations when everything becomes clear and our path becomes surer than it's been for a long time.

July also has a strong emphasis on relating to others. It's never been more important that we are absolutely honest in all our communications with others. This is an excellent time to clear up any old misunderstandings and perceived slights that have distorted our relationships with friends, business associates and partners.

We're going to put forth a lot of time and effort in helping some of our friends and family who remain stuck in repetitive old patterns or who have fallen into deep holes. We will do what we can to help them, but if they choose to remain stuck by the end of the month, we will have to continue on without them. Everyone is making their own choices. These choices are critical for they set the templates for all our future endeavors. Although everyone is entitled to their own choices without judgment, some of the choices being made by others will not enable us to travel further with them.

We are experiencing an immense sorting out process that is affecting all elements of our lives. Much is spinning away from us. This is particularly affecting the people around us. It's becoming almost like a revolving door with some exiting our lives and others entering it. We're not doing anything to make this happen; it's just something that's going on. Some people will be leaving our life and new people will be coming in. This is especially true once we get in our Big Boats. We will be traveling so quickly and over such a great distance that the ones in the small boats won't be able to keep up and will disappear into the far horizon. However, we won't be traveling alone anymore; the time for that is finished. New friends and relationships will appear once we are on the new level.

All year long our One Being has felt fragmented as we were all thrust back onto ourselves, focusing on our individual growth. We have questioned everything, looking for new solutions. Now our One Being is coming together once more, more alive and infinitely stronger than ever before.

The Lotus World is almost here and we really don't want to miss it. It's an exquisite new level of being. A whole new way of living and relating that is imbued with the most magnificent TRUE LOVE. Great Treasures await us in the Lotus World. These Treasures will manifest in many areas such as abundance, creativity and partnership. But we must be in our Big Boats in order to experience this. And the Treasures are already starting to arrive....

Quantum Surf always requires new ways of surfing. We must be ever vigilant not to be swept away by the powerful energies, but rather to surf them gracefully and remain grounded at all times. It's easy to go a bit crazy with so many emotions swirling around and so much calling our attention, but this is just what we cannot allow ourselves to do. We need to remain balanced and just keep doing whatever is in front of us, behind us, off to the sides, above and below. Nothing can be neglected.

We need to constantly expand ourselves so we can face new perspectives and deal with everything. With this Quantum Surf, nothing is moving in a linear fashion. Instead we are dealing with things coming at us in dimensional overlays. It feels much like being a flight controller with flights coming towards us from many different altitudes and from all directions. Somehow we have to maintain a 360' view at all times. We need to operate on numerous levels.

We will see that what is behind us is also in front of us. By doing this, we will discover a new way to Surf, a 360' multi-dimensional way. A Quantum Surf way. We do this by living large, not small and by being multi-faceted whole beings. This isn't as difficult as one might imagine; it is our Natural State.

We are dealing simultaneously with Past, Present and Future. They are all mixed together and cannot be separated. So one minute we might be dealing with a past issue by repatterning it, and the next minute something from our future will be revealed. Every time we repattern the past, we fling open the door to the future. We don't need to be intimidated by Quantum Surf, for these are the waves that we were born to surf.

And whenever it is necessary, call a "time out" and do something physical and fun. Take a walk, swim, ride a bike, garden, clean the house, play some sports etc. It's essential that we constantly maintain our link to the physical world, no matter what is going on energetically. We can't space out if we want to stay on top of the Surf. The physical world is here to help us; all we need to do is remember to go there.

From the New Moon on July 24th to the end of month, there will be another powerful surge of Mega Quantum Surf, even stronger than the one at the end of June. It's going to be a powerful time. There's a huge spectrum of possibilities for this time which includes major Quantum Breakthroughs, earth changes, connecting with your One True Love, leaving the planet, becoming unbalanced and crazy, unbridled creativity, major revelations, new career paths opening or finding one of your Treasures. What happens will be determined by our attitudes and actions between now and then.

July is a brilliant month in which much will be achieved. We will experience emotional healing, major resolution of old core issues, the dissolving of blockages, Wild Cards, Quantum Breakthroughs, possible Treasures, new people coming into our lives and a quickening and recalibration of our LOVE.

Most importantly, July is like a lock in a canal. We enter it on one level and exit it on another. Throughout the month the sea will rise and we will raise our resonance until finally, we have grown too large for our small boat and old problems. Then in one decisive, love filled moment, we will make the leap, jumping ship into the Big Boats where we truly belong.

By next summer I could have $3000, and I'm sure we can find 12 other people who could too.

I like the idea of other friends buying into it with contributions of $500, which grants time-share privileges.

If each of the 12 could get a couple friends to give $500, we'd have what is needed to buy the ship.

If you only have $1000, but you want to be one of the 12, you'd need to find six friends to each contribute $500.

This will enable people who don't have all the cash a fair chance to be an equal partner.

This project is about figuring out how to get all our needs met, using all our networks and resources.

Nomadic travels over the past decade have kept me from developing deep roots in any single community. I have a family of friends spread all over North America. Love of travel and desire to build community are a challenging balancing act. I like living simply, spending winters in warm climates with good company, enjoying freedom and adventure. This means practicing methods of sustainable travel and cooperative living. A large spaceship could help solve this problem. Do you like sailing?

Picture living like Peter Pan in perpetual dream-time; exploring all over the planet; wild parties at sea and remote places; bicycling, kayaking and kite surfing; learning from an inspirational crew that will blow your mind daily with their talents, insights and lust for life.

A friend of mine is selling his 45ft schooner for $45,000 and I'm planning to have a crew together by next summer to buy the boat and begin living on board. This ship will be owned and managed collectively, specifically to be an experiment in co-operation. Each person involved brings their talents, networks and resources to the table. If a dozen of us each toss in $3000, and find two friends to each contribute $500, we'd have more than enough.

I know our circle can do anything when we put hearts, minds and hands together. We really are action heroes... the leaders, movers, shakers, shamans, fire starters -- just like right out of the comic books and movies, writing the stories of our lives, creating culture as we dream it.

The vision is to make this vessel a venture through the Action Hero Network to offer affordable opportunities to many organizations and individuals. The Action Hero Network is a 501(c)3 social profit project of the International Humanities Center, dedicated to promoting what action heroes are doing everywhere. That doesn't mean we can't making a fair living doing this. We can and will.

Everyone loves the romance of a drive-in theater. Imagine a sail-in theater! Since high school, I've presented hundreds of slide shows sharing my adventures and motivational messages, and have always dreamed of projecting on huge screens in public areas. This ship happens to have some very large screens. The deck is also open enough to act as a stage. Our performances would offer entertaining spectacles introducing culturally diverse earth-loving lifestyles, and show educational documentaries that focus attention on places that need our help.

This winter I'll return to work on the Roblito Community Center for Cultural Exchange in Mexico by plane, which will cost me around $1000, and us all the pollution of more jet fuel exhaust. The following winter, we'll be sailing this ship to Roblito, and I hope to pick you up along the way.

Thanks for allowing the opportunity to share this with you. Images of the ship can be seen at: http://actionhero.smugmug.com/gallery/1970187/9

Just got back from RoboDock arts festival Amsterdamn. Crazy industrial anarchy on squatted pier just north of Amsterdamn. Tons of rocking collectives and private alternative ships with loads of lessons out there. One ship, fronted by a German collective, large ship called the Schtoopnitz(spelling?), others at port as well ask around from people connected with the schtoopnitz gang. The freedom ship of the gorrilla Green Peace'rs--the one that got bomb attemted not too long ago by an angry government was also at port there. Back in Barcelona, I heard tell of a giant ship that ported around Arabic countries alot(int the last five years)-- an art troupe run rig (they had huge shows at port, free for the people, dancers hanging off of giant scafolding, raining waves of cold sparks and doing some sort of "on the cross" art spectacular.
PS
the places most beautiful and exotic are overrun with pirates--nasty disease raping, automatic rifle strapped pirates.
Some Rainbow friends of mine tried to take off from India with a large schooner but Malaria got the best of them before they had a chance to die of scurvy. Just some things to consider.

Most of these ships are getting funded by european art councils supported by the government-- we just don't have that kind of setup here, but rock out with yoour badselves-- Americans are cunning, resourcefull little devils, ain't we!

We'll train with the Schooner here in the Maritimes(Eastern Canada and Maine) next summer. It is currently docked on Grand Manan Island, where James, the owner lives. He has used the ship to offer whale watching tours in past years. He'd be able to train us to sail the boat during the summer, and maybe we could even offer whale watching tours to generate funds.

The following fall and winter, we then sail to the Central Pacific coast of Mexico, where we have a project in the village of Roblito. To make more money, we could offer charter tours off Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta which have huge numbers of tourists, and in the Sea of Cortez, sailing calmer waters up and down the Baja between Roblito and San Felipe... which is not so far from San Deigo.

I've kayaked the whole 700 miles of the Sea of Cortez and it is AMAZING. The snorkling and spear fishing is killer! I know many great spots there... a few hot springs... hikes... we could spend years there alone.

That spring/summer we'd head north to LA, SF and Vancouver, then back down to Robilto for the next winter.

I'm open. We'll see what the rest of you have in mind.
