I know that some of us may hesitate to give away our fab faves for fear that at the next bellyevent everyone else will be dancing to the same song! Imagine....
there you are. All that hard work. The costume is perfect. The moves are memorized. You are not only on time but early enought to watch some other performances for inspiration. Suddenly you hear a few notes that make you stiffen in your chair. It's your song! Oh no! Are you supposed to be on now? Did you screw up the times? As you look in horror, another troupe takes the stage. She is wearing YOUR costume! Dancing to YOUR song! Doing YOUR moves! You gasp out loud and feel a chill. As you slowly look down at yourself, you notice... YOU ARE NAKED!
Then, you wake up and realize that your itunes mix is under lock and key. ; )
Anyway, one thing I like to do is encourage my students to do their own work. After all- if they plan to perform, be in a troupe or teach, they too will need to be on top of finding inspiring new songs, right?
So, here is some advice for how to find cool new tunes, by one who did it the hard way:
After getting into your itunes, click on the left side, itunes store, let it load in and then in the search box, type these key words to help you find cool blips of potentially cool bellysongs. Note* i am more tribally inclined so most of these may hint at world, funky or triabl, although I do have some cab type songs in there for good measure. Enjoy!
World Music, tribal, didjeridoo, bhangra, bollywood, dhol, djembe, drums, drumming, Hossam, Isam, Bellydance, bellydance superstars, flamenco, Egyptian, Turkish, Arabic, Karachi, Masmoudi, Beledi, Balady, Baledi, Taxim, Chiftitelli (and all variations of that word), Egypt, Nile, Orientale, Gypsy, African, Folkloric, fusion, Spanish, Oud, Doumbek, new age,
Also, go through your current collection and type in artists you already know you like. Itunes will offer "Those who bought this also bought:" suggestions which is a great way to follow the trail. A lot of my more obscure choices came from hitting samples while i work and following trails from one genre to another.
Feel free to add your own key words to help us all out if you have any to offer!
