The purpose of this website will be to list teachers in the UK who have FCBD General Skills/Teacher Training, enabelling anyone who wants to learn ATS to find a teacher near them.

It will also list ATS workshops, perormances and other events which are relevent to ATS.

It is still very much a work in progress, so please bear with me! I'm hoping that, in time, it will become a useful resource for everyone in the uK who loves ATS!
11am-2pm
****LIMITED PLACES AVAILABLE****

Sarah from Tribe of Kismet (Carolina Nericcio's UK representative) is coming to deliver a 3 hour workshop on Sunday 13th July *in Nottingham*. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from a talented and well-respected ATS teacher who is only 1 degree of separation from Carolina herself! She will be bringing her assistant Deana with her, enabling the workshop to cater for *all abilities*. Come and have a go at tribal, or refine your tribal bellydance technique, and meet likeminded dancers! Having just taken a workshop with Sarah & Deana I can confirm that you will definitely learn a lot and will come away with vastly increased improvising confidence!! Sarah and Deana will be performing at the Mehifsa event in Spondon the previous night, so you will get to see them in action! It is very likely that Sarah will not be back this way until next year, so don't miss out!!
Content will include instruction in the use of zills for tribal (please bring them if you have them), and intensive ATS technique & improvisation.

I'm clearing out some stuff that's been boxed through two house moves, and have come across an unlabelled CD. On it are a load of photos of tribal dancers, plus some non-tribal ones too. They could have come into my possession during an event I hosted with USA teachers, or through my visits over to the USA.

From what I can gather, they were either taken by somebody who has travelled to the USA/Europe from the UK to visit an old school friend, or a USA/mainland Europe person travelling to England - it's a little confusing! There is a photo of a message that says:
"Dear Miss Deltzerwas. Here to visit her former Kindergarten Student from England"

The date stamp is April 2006. I've posted a couple of the photos on my BellyNut tribe photo album: http://tribes.tribe.net/bellynuttribal

If you know anybody who travelled to the USA (or Europe) (one of the events seems to be called Casbah Studio) then please pass this on to them and ask them to get in touch. There must be some amazing memories on here and I'd hate it if they were mine and were lost!

I just thought I'd post this link http://www.to-ken.com/membersarea/Clivesreport.htm because as of the 6th of April this year it is not only illegal to import curved blades into the uk but is also illegal to expose them in public. The only exception to this rule are re-enactment or liscensed sporting activities. Unfortunately no provision has been made for dance or performance with a curved blade so this could have repercussions for bellydance. The above link shows the wording of the act for anyone wanting to check it out. Might be worth getting a petition together or contacting your local m.p. Blades under 50cm are permitted but a lot of dance swords are 70cms.

We have lots of other Barefoot Bellydance events coming up – our next is at Chippenham Folk Festival from 23rd-26th May, where we are teaching three workshops, and performing both in the arena and streets over the weekend. Hope to see some of you there – do come and say hello!

Please show your support and sign this petiton:

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/dancers/

It reads:

We the undersigned propose that dance be included as historical re-enactment or sporting activity within the exemption for the purchase & use of swords.
HEALTH/FITNESS/SPORT: Dance promotes a healthy lifestyle & is often taught as a form of aerobic sport exercise.
Other classes focus on technique & performance, at a professional level a good knowledge of fitness & physiology is required.
Belly dancers & many other types of traditional folklore dancers learn to use various props, such as sticks & swords which requires a great deal of skill,
Takes years to perfect & requires absolute stability of the head & neck, & flexibility & power.
Thus, Types of dance that use swords as props, are 'an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess' which is the definition of sport
therefore, should be included within the Sporting Activity exemption.
HISTORICAL PRESERVATION: Swords have been used in many traditional folklore dances in England since as far back as 1700s.
These dances are forms of art that are of great historical & cultural relevance, Banning the use of these swords will inevitably cause them to die out.
It is crucial that they are preserved & allowed to continue.

From there I have another 7 weeks in the UK, that's areally long time to go without dancing so I hope to be able to catch up with some of the local tribal dancers while I'm there. I will be spending a bit of time in London/Essex as I have family there. Would love to hear about any tribal sance get togethers or even classes around that I might be able to come along to.
Cheers Heidi

I've been musing about working on a tribal costume as a project for my degree. It would form a major part of my degree show in June this year. I've been wanting to make a costume for some time but uni work has had to come first. So I thought maybe I should combine the two! I will be making final decisions in the next few days, but thought I would ask if anyone would be interested in working with me to model the costume. You would have to be photogenic/not camera shy as I will need to photograph the costume being worn. If time permits it will not just be the costume but jewellery too and definitely a headdress, so you probably need to have a fairly flamboyant character. Someone with quite a quirky look would be perfect.

Sadly as this is a student project I can't afford to pay you, but if you collaborate with me you will have a set of gorgeous photos to keep. You would ideally live around North London as I am based in Enfield and go to uni in Hatfield.

If you think this might be up your street do let me know - send a pm and I will forward my email. I's a little tentative at the moment as I need to make a decision one way or another - just trying to judge peoples reaction.

Thanks,
