How exactly do you tranport your trike to the playa??

I was thinking. Since this is actually the first time my trike will make it to the playa. How the hell am I getting it out there.
I have a bike rack, not sure if it will fit.
I have a roof rack.
I have other ideas, but I wanted to see how other people got their trikes to the man.

  • I have a minivan--but it took up the whole rear without seats.

Luckily when I took it last year I had a camper trailer to hold most of my other stuff.

    But yup--they are bulky!!!

I'd love to hear any clever ideas of how to transport!
    • I brought a trike, but was in an RV, so someone I knew brought it in his truck for me. But I wanted to bring it home myself. A friend showed me how to take off both back wheels, and then it was easy to bring inside, wrap in a towel, and set on the RV dining table. It would easily have fit into any kind of vehicle. The trike also folds in the center, so we were able to juggle it into a good position, and keep it in position with bungee cords.

In everyday use, when I am getting it in and out of my van, I use a large piece of plywood as a ramp.
      • I'm in the process of tricycle-izing my playa bike from last year. The transporting it up there will be an issue. To make it further complicated I plan on making it a tall trike! that mos def will not fit on the roof of my car.
This one is going to be interesting. Any suggestions?
        • I have a plan but I have not tried it yet...one of the design criteria for my three person trike was a rear wheel base of 48". This will fit in one of those hitch mounted cargo carriers...I hope that I can strap the back wheels into the carrier and then run a line down from the front wheel to the spare tire mount on the back wall of my motorhome. So the trike will be sitting with its nose straight up in the air like you were peddling right up the back of the RV...I suspect this would work for almost any vehicle...you would just have to put some padding between the car and the trike where it leans forward against the car. I say all of this with one comment...the best laid plans of mice and men....
  • I have used a rooftop rack in the past, just used 3 of the "trays". it does take help to get the trike on and off, but it is out of the way.
    • I removed the wheels, took the handlebars off, and jammed it in my subaru the first year. Last year, I buried it in the camp trailer, underthe shower and kitchen stuff.
      • Stirling, Did it work to put your trike upright in a cargo carrier and tie it down? I have a 24"x60" cargo carrier, but my trike is 26" wide. I tried taking off the back wheels, but was told by the bike shop that that wasn't a good thing to do. In fact, I lost two essential pieces when I did it and am now waiting for the mfg to send them to the bike shop so they can make my trike usable again. If I could put the trike in the cargo carrier vertically, I would be able to use the rest of the carrier for stuff. I have ratchet straps. So I'm curious if it worked and how you tied it down.
        Thanks.
        • Hi Sparkle, Yes and No...I put the trike up on the carrier and the rear wheels fit perfectly (which allows you to store stuff between the wheels and still get some use out of your rack)...I can secure the wheels in it via rope or cargo straps and it is great. So why the No you ask? I have absolutely nothing to secure the front wheel/frame to the top of the RV that I would be comfortable attaching a strap to (can you see an upside down trike being drug down the highway with an AC unit dragging behind it on a rope...not going there.) SOOOO, since I have no structure on the rear part of my RV roof that is worthy of putting a tie hook into I made two plates and sandwiched the roof and used a u-bolt all the way through it. So the reason for the No is that I haven't thrown the trike back up there to make sure it will be secure enough for me using my hook installation. Of course if you have something to tie to on the top of your RV you will not have this problem so it shouldn't be an issue for you :) I am going to try out the loading again this afternoon I will let you know how it goes...I would take a picture but I am in the middle of moving and I think my camera cable is at the other house. Oh one other thing for you...is there an issue with you securing a 30" board across your carrier and then loading your bike on top of the board...and securing the wheels to the board? Just a thought.
          Stirling :)
          • Hi Again Sparkle, Ok it is now an official Yes. It looks funny as h e l l...like somebody road the trike up the back of the RV and got stuck there. I think it will work out perfect...the hook seems to be very secure and the rear tires fit perfect in my carrier. Let me know how your loading works out.
        • This might be a solution.

I took 4 2 x4s, (two for the front wheel, and 2 for the rear wheels) made a "rack" that fits on top of our utility trailor. These 2x4's were held in place by 2x4's that were screwed into them, just wider then the trailer. The "rack" also had short pieces of 2x4's to hold the wheels in place, and also to provide a place to tie down the trike. I tied the whole thing to the trailer with ratchet straps. Did not move the entire 500 miles each way.

This allowed the entire trailer to be used for hauling stuff.

          • Hi Stirling and Cheryl,
Thanks so much for your responses. I think 2x4s would work better than a piece of board 30" wide because I think it would be easier to tie it down with 2x4s. I have ratchet straps.

I've drawn a picture of what I think you have described, Cheryl, and I've added some notes. Is this what you are describing?
            gallery.me.com/judemarks#...color=black

I'm wondering if the 2x4s labeled E and F on one side and G and H on the other side would be attached underneath A and B and C and D. I'm thinking this because of the 2x4s that go on each side of each wheel. It seems like a 2x4 on top would get in the way. I'm also wondering if the 2x4s that go on each side of the wheels would be turned upright to hold the wheels in better.

Why did this seem so clear as I wrote it and so complicated now that I'm reading it? I hope my drawing helps.

Thanks again for helping me think this through.

            Sparkle
            • That is basically what I built. I built it to fit my trailer and trike. (if you notice, the trike in my photo is a two person side-by-side trike ie, very heavy.) I am sure you could get by with much smaller dimensions then 2x4's.

I did make it so EF,GH are mounted under the crossbars AB,CD, to keep the unit from sliding back and forth.

I think you have the basic idea/concept. just make it so it works for you.
              • I picked up my trike from the shop today and brought it home and put it in the carrier. Since it is only an inch or so too wide, the bike shop guy suggested putting it in a little crooked and letting one wheel hang out. The wheel hung too low, so I started adjusting it and found that it fit ON TOP of the carrier rails. I will, of course, use ratchet straps to keep it from moving around, but I also stuffed a tray of water bottles, some rugs, three folding chairs, some plastic boxes and two oars for use on Donner Lake the following week in the carrier holding the trike in place. But I'm wondering if I'm thinking it through properly and would like to ask you guys, my common sense committee, :-) in this area to please take a look at the picture and tell me what you think. Here's the link:

I'll be there Wednesday night for the meetup. You will recognize my trike because it is covered in teal and purple fake fur and the canopy is covered by a teal scarf floating in the wind attached with a strip of purple fur around the top edge. A friend last year said it looked like a rickshaw for royalty.

Is anyone planning on participating in the parade mentioned in another topic?
                • Aw, Sparkle, Can't look at your pics without signing up for mobile me. Can you put them in your tribe photos and copy the link to this thread, please?
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Sorry about that! Here's a link to the picture on my tribe album:

                    • Looks good. I would make sure that outer wheel is well attached to the carrier.. Have a great trip...
                      • Thanks for all your comments. I decided to try one more method just to be sure. The trike balancing on top of the rails seemed a little iffy.

So I put it upright, like Stirling suggested, but then the attachment on the basket to hold the canopy in place stuck out too far in the back.

I turned it around and this is what I have. I will fill up the cargo carrier all around with stuff to hold the trike in place and I will strap it down with my life (and with ratchets) to keep it firm. Some of the teal and purple is already on. i'll send a picture when it is complete.

                        people.tribe.net/sparkle-p...c1846c15cf

Any comments? The carrier seems to jiggle around a bit. I'll take it for a test drive to the nearest state park and dump my tanks next week.

                        Thanks,
                        Sparkle
                        • That should work. thats a reaalllly long wheelbase on that trike- so taking off the wheels and flipping the basket up would not allow it to fit on the carrier sideways.

it will work. protect the paint with rags, or bubble wrap and use ratcheting tiedown straps to keep it secure.

the carrier is wobbly? are you using a holding pin? or a threaded bolt? if the reciever pin hole is threaded, use a bolt and it may reduce the wobbling. I have a bike hitch and I use a bolt instead of a pin and it's pretty solid.
                          • Thank you, TomCat! I tried everything over the weekend and found out that i have to ratchet everything little by little and one after the other and not finish one side without the other. The unratched side drooped, even though it wasn't carrying much at the time. The trike worked well upright. It wasn't going anywhere by the time I finished ratcheting!

I have a locking pin and there is a piece that can fit to make the pin fill the hole. I didn't know this when the RV repair place installed it for me. When I tried to remove the pin, the filler piece stayed in and I couldn't get the cargo carrier out of the hitch. I didn't know what was the matter. I had just had the hitch installed. Now it is funny, but it wasn't the day it happened! I took it to my friendly mechanics and they hammered it out. So, needless to say, I'm hesitant to put it in again. But I think it might make it less wobbly. Is it dangerous if it is wobbly, or just annoying?

                            Thanks,
                            Sparkle
                            • Hey Sparkle, I just noticed your carrier/hitch pin question. Most carriers do wobble a bit, I know mine does, but as long as you have a good hitch pin and secure your load it shouldn't present a problem. If it worries you though you can get a reciever anti rocking thingy <-- tech term. Here is a picture of one...it came with my motorcycle carrier...it works pretty good.

Only problem is I don't know where they carry these things for sale...the big discount auto parts places or maybe U-Haul ???? I just thought I would let you know something is made to take care of the wobbling carrier issue :)

    Must resist ... temptation. Desire to ... make ... snarky ... comment ... overwhelming. Can't ... resist ...

<snarky>When you designed the custom frame, didn't you consider how you'd transport it? Perhaps by making it all unbolt and lay flat?</snarky>

So now I bask in shame and euphoric release ...

If you need some more room and you are stuffing everything in your car, and are still needing more room for more stuff, you could always remove the seats that are not holding passengers, ie the rear seats, and possibly the front seat if you are traveling solo. Rapunzel did this a couple years ago- she hangs out on the Burningman virgins 2008 tribe. She can tell you the details. It frees up a couple cubic feet and that may be all you need.

Hey Sparkle, Just saw your trike loaded...looks great...can't wait to see it in teal & purple!

And For the Snark...I did plan my loading when I built my trike...but even the best laid plans of mice and men can go awry...luckily for me it worked as planned :)

I am looking forward to meeting all of the Tribe Trikers in 13 days (what a great number) 7:30 Wednesday

        Stirling :)
