Some friends and I are into fashioning some mutant bikes. We want to make a trike with those amazing plastic corrugated pipe wheels.
Here's a look at a heavier duty, double-wide version using a car rim (click the "View Full Size Image [+]" link to really check it out). We need to go smaller and thinner without anything as big as a car rim of course:
cliffypop.com/galleryhop/...2007-299.JPG
Problem is these pipes only come new in expensive 20 ft lengths. We probably need less than 3 ft.
Anyone have an idea about where to pick this pipe up for cheap? We've been calling around for scraps without much luck.
Would love any ideas for lightweight hubs and custom spoke ideas too. Thanks.

Re: Large Corrugated Pipe Wheels
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 9:22 AMNah, but I'd like to try something smaller in scale. This crazy machine was built by some truly inventive folks I ran into on the Playa this year.
I assume you looked at some of the surrounding pictures in the gallery on the link I posted. Pretty amazing! ...huge, bizarre reversed trikes with flames out the top! Whoa...

Re: Large Corrugated Pipe Wheels
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 11:26 AMScotty C is a member of this group, and the one who made those wheels. Thousands of parts and a lot of time, so I can see how trying to go a little simpler might be a good plan. I am sure that Scotty will chime in eventually about where he sourced the drainage pipe. If I remember correctly, they were off cuts/end cuts from a sewage pipe project.
The car wheels as hubs have worked pretty well for all three of our large bikes, as they provide a nice way to attach wheels to the rigs, using standard mounting plates and axles.
Maybe you could do something more like the wheels on this one:
tribes.tribe.net/spontaneo...c3f4049c37
But with small curved steel plates at the ends of the spokes, to keep them from poking through the drainage pipe? My guess is that the PVC pipe has enough flex that, depending on the weight of the rest of the rig, even a 1-foot spacing between spokes might be enough to allow for flat spots in the wheel between spokes.
Best of luck, and keep us posted on the project!

Re: Large Corrugated Pipe Wheels
Sun, December 2, 2007 - 6:49 PM--IIRC there are something like 1,700 parts per 'tire' so be ready for a pile of work. As for where to get the material you might want to check with an ag supply retailer and find out who bought the last chunk; maybe they didn't use it all up? -

Re: Large Corrugated Pipe Wheels
Mon, December 3, 2007 - 9:32 AMYeah, all those little eye hooks, spokes, and then a bunch of pop rivets too for tires! Ours certainly won't be as big and beefy as the double wide car rim version.
After some research, we're finding there's a ton of 24 inch diameter pipe available, but why use that when a bike tire is that size?
Apparently the 36 inch is difficult to find as it's used much less often, plus it has to be double-walled. I've heard this kind of pipe is called "HPC" or something like that. At least one farm supply place around Somona County claims to carry 36 inch, but only in the spring time when more of a demand exists.
Unfortunately, we're trying to keep to recycled parts and not spend a bunch of cash on a length of 20 foot pipe when we need a fraction of that!
Still lookin'... -

Re: Large Corrugated Pipe Wheels
Mon, December 3, 2007 - 2:26 PMAre you sure that tire is built from pipe stock? The practice of building these wheels (and larger ones) is common practice in the Kinetic Sculpture Race (KSR) field. You photo looks like the Dept of Spont Combustion folks, who know the KSR folks, but don't race (the Dept vehicle is not amphibious).
Check out this example of an even larger tire:
www.threefeathersmedia.com/Phot...).jpg
I think they fashion the outside of those wheels from a strip of metal, not from a pipe. Somebody up in Eureka has an annual workshop on building these wheels. I'll see if I can find any more info.

My buddy and I have decided to go the large wheel route for the playa this year and your hint that they have an annual workshop on building these wheels has me intrigued. Any idea when these are ? Or who sponsors them?
Any info would be appreciated

Mon, December 3, 2007 - 3:02 PMCheck out this guy's blog. He built a KSR machine 'dicycle' called Unwheeldly. a 'dicycle' is a 2-wheeled vehicle with the 2 wheels side-by-side...

Wed, December 5, 2007 - 10:54 AMGravity Mike, thanks!
These are amazing projects and so well documented!
We've been hedging toward rolling our own big rims as we have access to a tube roller. It fits less into our recycled mandate since we'll probably have to buy some good straight steel, however, it's looking more and more like the only choice.
In fact, our founder of sorts, David Farish (we're out of Santa Rosa), recently put together this interesting beast using wheels he rolled:

Anyhow, thanks again for the great links and I'll keep posting on any progress...

Wed, December 5, 2007 - 1:42 PMBTW, I recently did a bit of research on KSR since starting on this trike project.
Here's a rundown of KSR events around the country to get an idea of the movement and those involved:

Re: Large Corrugated Pipe Wheels
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 9:29 PMKSR is spreading! We have Gravity Mike. Now we have our hook in Stache! Bwahahahahahahah!
Indeed, we do enjoy a bit of fun in that sport.
I've made wheels from satellite dishes. Remember those six foot and bigger dishes that people used to have in their yard to watch television from Mars? They make great wheels.
Cable reels are stronger, and sometimes they are abandoned at job sites. Or just walk right up and beg them off the crews laying cable. There are some ten-footers in the back of a truckstop in Utah that SHALL be mine, one of these days.
For something smaller, a friend of mine makes wheels out of those little trampolines that people jog on when they don't want to go anywhere -- rebounders, I think they are called.
Anything round can be a wheel!

Re: Large Corrugated Pipe Wheels
Sun, January 6, 2008 - 7:52 PMI have seen /thought about a couple of large wheel ideas that looked MUCH easier than the corrugated pipes.
First was a wheel made from one of those single person trampolines (bouncercisers I think they are called) and bolted/wired to a standard bicycle wheel.
The other idea I have played with is starting with a bicycle wheel and attaching plywood discs to the rims. 1/4" ply with stiffening ribs, the whole shebang screwed to a standard rim. Tires could be pvc pipe with trashed bicycle tires contact cemented onto them......
Hope this gets the process going.
