Learn the beauty that is American Tribal Style Belly Dance (ATS)!
Using both slow movements and fast steps, we’ll get you dancing in your first class!

New project

Some of you may already know , but I wanted to make things "official" on the Trillium Tribe.
I have enjoyed dancing with Traci and Marie for the last 2 -1/2 years. Trillium is an awesome troupe and I am proud that I was able to be a part of it. In October I left Trillium to put together a new project that will allow me to spend more time with my family and help my son get ready for college. We are still friends and there was no drama, just time for me to move on.

I will always support and promote Trillium. We are all part of the same ATS community, and I am so happy to see how it has grown. We were the only ones in Wisconsin 2 years ago, and now we have 6 new Sister Studios. This allows people interested in Carolena Nericcio's American Tribal Style bellydance to have access to many certified teachers in the area. In this way, we reach many more prospective students, and can promote the true spirit of ATS.

My new troupe is called Tamarind, and our Tribe is Tamarind Tribal Bellydance.There are 6 of us now, with room to grow. Thanks for supporting me in Trillium, and I look forward to being a part of the new ATS community in Wisconsin! Thank you Traci and Marie for being a part of it all!

This is going to sound odd, but, does anyone over there in Milwaukee, have a cooler that Diana and I can borrow for the duration of time that we're there for the GS/TT??

Our hotel room, doesn't have a fridge of any kind, not even a kitchen-ette, or a microwave oven. Huge bummer. But, what can ya do, ya know?? If we could just borrow a cooler from someone, we'd be all set. At least we could keep some things cold for a little while.

If I could bring a mini-fridge with me, boy would I ever try.

Getting to and from the GS/TT

I was wondering, is there anyone that Diana and I can get a ride with, to get from the GS and TT, back to our hotels at the end of the day? I know someone offered, but I can't recall who.

Our hotel is over on S. Howell. The travel agency told us that was very close to the studio. Does anyone know how far that REALLY is from the studio and is taking a cab there will be afforadable??? I was told it was only about 4 miles, which was one of the deciding factors for why we chose that hotel. That and it's super cheap (which explains the lack of fridge, microwave, etc, LOL!).

Northern Lights Dance Festival this weekend!

Trillium will be teaching 2 workshops, and will be performing in the saturday evening show along with some major bellydance talent from around the country. (Morocco, Ariellah,and many others!)

We are sorry to announce that the workshops scheduled for this Saturday, August 23rd @ Chiropractic and Wellness on Pewaukee Lake have been cancelled. Collaborative GS note-tidying after each session

Who's in, and where shall we do this?

Traci and Marie mentioned that after every GS day, they went back to their hotel and talked through their notes to clean/clear them up as much as possible. I think this is invaluable to those of us who really want to get a grip on the technique of this art form and for those of us who would like to teach some day.

Jen, I was wondering if location has been decided, and if there is a cafe or something nearby where we could get together to do this. Or if there are other places - anyone have any ideas?

I will be commuting back and forth on Saturday and Sunday, only crashing on a friend's couch on Friday night, so I don't even have a hotel room to offer for said session.

I'm getting excited about this - now I need to go and cement my shoulders back and down again...:)

Trillium at the South Shore Farmers Market

WHEW!

What a weekend!

Trillium and Zephyranthes danced our tassels off all weekend at Bastille Days and survived the wind that tried to blow us off the stage, blistering hot stage floor after the tarp blew off the stage (ooh, poor tootsies!), and the blazing sun.

The crowds were so nice! It's always so fun to see the audience grow and stretch back into the walkways and shops when the music and zaghareets start! I still can't believe how fast we ran out of business cards and fliers.......and bindis! We bindified hundreds at least!

Trillium Studio is moving July 1st!

We will miss our pretty studio, but are joining up with a great Bay View business, the Shape up Shoppe!
Bigger dance space, great location in the heart of downtown BV, AND a spa with theraputic whirlpool, sauna and steam room.
We will be giving the space the "Trillium Treatment" with our twinkly lights and wall hangings, and we will still have the chocolate basket.

Beth Nicholson's Pilates class will be moving with us, same day and time, mondays 6-7pm

We had a photography student taking photos, and while her pics of Trillium and FCBD did not turn out great, many of you are represented beautifully, mainly Khivan, Bennu Bast, Rakhshanda, and Chandra Devi, Trisha dancers and some gorgeous ones of Stef. These were all saved in a large file format, so they will work well for print and web sites. I am going to begin making copies for those of you named here, and bring them to the June 7th Trillum Studio hafla, and Tribal Rev. If you want 'em sooner, let me know, and we'll arrange a pick-up!

I'm doing a project for my AP Advanced Composition class in school on photojournalism. It's a research paper on the career we all plan to do after highschool/college and a part of it includes either shawoding or interviewing someone doing the job.

I've gotten the okay to use either a photojournalist, a photographer, or a freelance photographer (journalist or freelancer preferred) and i'm looking around for some contacts to start setting that up.

It looks like you all had a fabulous time at the Domes. Thanks for taking (Logan) and posting (Traci) the pics.

And I've been mulling this over, but, I'm thinking - what's this summer's teaching schedule like at the Trillium Studio, Jen?

If I would be allowed (allowed, as in, well, perhaps I should pm you about appropriate levels for me), I'd love to take a whole mess of classes. I've been drilling and working with my DVDs, but I am now at the point where I want to dance with others a lot more, and seeing all that prettiness and happiness at the Domes did it. I wanna dance with others, too. :)

New Level 1 sessions begin!

New Level 1 tribal bellydance classes begin Saturday March 15th, 10-11am, and Tuesday March 18th, 6-7pm.

Classes are now $10 drop in, or $70 for 8 classes. The snow is finally melting, come on out and dance with us!

Zephyranthes is a flower in the Trillium family, These students are truly dedicated to the art of ATS, and regularly attend every level of Trillium's bellydance classes.

Jen on "Here on Earth"?

So I was driving back from a rehearsal I had in Madison this eve, and I was listening to a re-broadcast of Jean Feraca's show "Here on Earth," and, because a guest was unable to participate in today's show, she had an open line, taking suggestions from listeners. One guy called in and said something like, "Hey, have you ever had on anything about tribal bellydance?" Jean answered no, but funny he mentions it because a) she's tried to take a bellydance class and it aggravated her sciatica as well as hurt her hip, but b) she noticed how popular it is becoming (especially with the young people, I believe she said - I can't wait for her to learn about the wide backgrounds, ages, etc. of bellydancers), and the caller said, "Well, I might have someone who would be great to interview - her name is Jennifer and she has a studio in Bayview." Meanwhile, I'm getting all excited in my car, telling the radio "HEY! *I* know THAT Jennifer! That would be so AWESOME! Have her on for an hour to chat about dance!"

Weaving it Together: Technique-Focused Dance Combinations.

In this class we will not only work on honing our dance technique, we will put it to good use as we put those moves we have drilled ever so faithfully! We will learn and create some fun combinations that can be incorporated into your own repertoire, keeping strong muscular skill and alignment well in hand so the creative juices are free to flow! As we weave our moves into combos, we shall then weave the combos into a choreography to take with us! This class is fun and appropriate for all levels of Tribal-flavored dancer, and those new to Tribal Style are encouraged to give it a try. Some Bellydance experience is recommended. Please wear exercise-friendly clothes and bring something to tie around your hips!

Tribal Fusion Drills:

This class will largely focus on posture and technique. We will begin with basic drills and move onto more complex drills and then put these movements into short combinations. This class is great for beginners and an excellent review and workout for intermediate dancers.

Layering Tribal Fusion Movements with Control and Precision:

This class will begin with posture and technique drills, focusing on executing movements correctly and gaining muscle memory which is crucial in layering. We will continue by layering these movements on top of each other and eventually working towards layering 3 movements at a time. These moves will then be put into combinations and a short choreography will be introduced. All levels are welcome, beginning and advanced variations will be offered.

Tools of the Trade - A Breakdown of Advanced Moves for the Experienced Tribal Dancer:
This class is designed for the dedicated Bellydance student, and is suggested for dancers with several years of experience in Tribal Bellydance or Suhaila Salimpour technique. Here we will cover more advanced topics such as precise multi-layered movement, footwork, turning technique, floor work and preperation for backbends. Beginning and ending with a Yoga warm up and cool down, we will stretch and prepare the body, and each student will be encouraged and assisted in creating their own strengthening and conditioning routine to take home and practice each day, in order to help them meet their personal goals as a dancer. Bring a mat, a notebook and pen.

Location & cost break-down:

Cost will be $75 for 1 workshop, or $70 each if you sign up for more than one workshop. Email afsanasisters@gmail.com to sign up. Indicate which workshops you'll be taking, and how you'll be paying. 2008 Tribal Revolution in Chicago

I was trying to get an idea of what the plan was for going down for this. I see they have registration information up and wanted to start planning for the event. I know I was planning on going down for Saturday and Sunday, but wasn't sure about Friday (probably not). But, I'm trying to get a general concensus. (I know it's early and we have a plethora of other items to concern ourselves with, but I need to make sure I have sitters for my kids and coverage for work....you know how these things go).

Was very interesting for me. I have only seen a very little bit of Tai Chi in my life and now I am anxious to learn! Perhaps I'll finally gain some balance!

Pilates - Super Beth Nicholson
Oh. my. goodness. I can't believe she could speak normally while executing those moves! Absolutely incredible! The first time I took a pilates mat class, I felt my rectus abdominus for three days from my sternum to my pubis with excruciating clarity. Seeing Beth's push-ups inspired me to reconsider trying it again.....I'm pretty sure she could kick my butt without breaking a sweat!

Zumba - Lindsey Tandingen
Woooooooo! What fun! I was at least 3 steps behind everyone the whole time, but laughing and having a great time! It felt wonderful to just dance-and the Latin music just makes you go!

Nia - Sally Stanton
As always, a joyful, free, expressive form of movement. A fabulous way to let your inhibitions go and just be!

Foundations of Self-Defense - Tim Kaplan with Mike Callovi
Based on Lohan Gung Fu, Tim's goal is to bring the Art back into Martial Artist (description shamelessly stolen from Tim as eloquently described by Dave V---oh, please don't make my try to spell your last name!) Today's demo by Tim, Mike and the students was as entertaining as it was informative-I'm certain that I am not alone when I say I was captivated! Forgive me, Dragon, for I do not remember the correct terminology, but it was really interesting to see the 9 (stations?) first without a weapon, and then with three different weapons-seeing the similarities and differences was very enlightening. To learn not just the how, but more importantly the WHY, and the history is so much more complete than just learning how to defend one's self. The students did a wonderful job of demonstrating. It is clear that they are dedicated and focused.

Wow. TSDC has really worked hard and it shows! Confidence and poise and grace and beauty! Wonderful job!
And the great part? Any woman can do it! ATS Belly Dance is a joy to learn and exhilharating to perform-a fabulous way to connect with your sisters in dance........or just have a nice girls' night out!

I loved the TSDC segment and the special song by Kiss My Shimmy (students of TSDC---is it ok that I said it like that?) Their performance was fab and their musical selection -- Sweet!!!

****Special thanks to Bennu Bast (Mary Chang and Terri Thompson) for braving the elements and dancing for us before your gig tonite! You are beautiful and a joy to watch!

Then came Trillium....I for one, had a blast! Even icky blowing blizzard-like snow and an hour and a half drive home with numb fingers from holding the steering wheel so tight seem worthwhile when I get to dance with Marie and Jen!

More Pura photos and YouTubery?

I am very grateful for the pics and videos up the Pura weekend so far, but I also know there was at least one photographer and videographer at the performance for the whole thing...so...I'm wondering...are we going to see ...MORE? (Yes, I was there, I know, but I love seeing everything from different angles. And I love seeing the performances and costumes again.)
Just curious.

Pilates classes begin this friday

Pilates with Beth Nicolson (you may also know her as "Superbeth" ) begin this Friday at 6:30 pm. This is a beginner to intermediate "Mat Style " Pilates class, so bring a yoga mat. Pilates is a great strengthening workout, especially good for dancers!!

Classes are $12 for 1 hour.

Zumba classes

Zumba classes with Lindsay Tandingen have begun!! The class looks like alot of fun, and Lindsay gets you moving right away. Lot's of bellydancers in class tonight, so maybe we will be seeing a little samba in your shimmies next week??

Zumba is a Latin -fusion dance workout, great for any fitness level. $12 drop in, $100 for 10 classes.
Check it out! Thursday nights, 6-7pm. Great teacher, great workout!!!

"We went up to Milwaukee to see a Tribal Bellydancing event put on by Trillium Tribal Bellydance. It was fantastic and there were some intriguing hybrids: a duo that performed a blend of Flamenco and Bellydancing (big Flamenco fan), and a local group that blends traditional African dance and martial arts. "

"My GF is a belly dancer and really into that whole scene, which has been rather educational for myself, as I've never paid all that much attention to it. Prior to going to a fair amount of shows of this nature recently, I've never gotten a firm grasp on the ART of it. I always thought of it as kind of a burlesque with the additional tangent of abdominal gymnastics. I stand corrected, there's a LOT more to the good stuff."

Gypsy Caravan (the movie, not the troupe)

It is playing this Saturday at the Oriental, as part of the Milwaukee International Film Festival. You will need to order tickets online, if there are any left at all. I went tonight at 4:45 and it was sold out and jam-packed....worth it , even though I am really bad in crowds. 5 different music/dance groups, from 5 different regions, all Rom/gypsy/Gitano. The Flamenco bits made me think of Carolena, the Rajasthani group, Maharaja, was a glimpse into the "roots " , the Romanian groups (North and South) made me want to dance and to cry, and then there was Esma, the "Queen of the Gypsies" . I had trouble staying seated, and also had to hold back the Zaghareets...I found myself doing discreet headslides and shoulder shimmies throughout. Please try and see this, if you can , Milwaukee dancers. Otherwise, wait for the DVD...I know I will be.

New floor

I have been working in the studio over the last few days, and it is shaping up! The new floor is gorgeous, like silk beneath your feet! There will be a few other improvements, but I will save it as a surprise for all of you. GS in Milwaukee

just talking now, no date yet, most likely it will be in 2009, but we will have a GS at Trillium studio, for anyone who is interested in a 3 day intensive with Carolena. and for those of you outside Milwaukee, Trillium studio is in BayView, just south of downtown. it is a lovely place, and very accepting of us bellydancers!

this will give you all ltime to save up!!!

I think I speak for all of us (Marie, Jen, Stef and myself) when I say that we are proud of the product of our year+ efforts. We (Trillium) have always sworn off putting anything on youtube or anywhere else for public viewing until we had something worthy enough for our Teacher, Carolena.
Well, the decision was made for us when Miss Boo posted the following video of our "Project" or "It's All BellyDance" on youtube. Please enjoy it, and please read the inspiration, Marie's vision, inspired by Carolena's interview on "SF Beledi" that Miss Boo was kind enough to include with her lovely review.

I felt a public "Thank you" was in order, so I posted it on the Tribal:Pura ATS tribe.

Please forgive me for not specifying many of the duties that I am thanking for. There are so many.

Thank you to my fabulous hubby, Matt for table sitting, ticket sales, transportation, general fetching and every other thing that we threw at you!

Thank you to Rich for being the shuttle service, errand runner and for providing massages to the lovely VIPs! I had my massage table with me all weekend in hopes of providing massage as well, but it was just too busy!

Special thanks to Tim for handling our Sound at the show and for generally making sure our needs were met in the sound and light departments. It is so helpful to have a musician and one who understands belly dance in general and ATS specifically taking care of our sound needs. Thank you for your input on everything. I'm sure you helped to allow everyone to enjoy the music we chose by helping us adjust our instruments.

Thank you to Mary and Kerry for handling registration and so much more advice and assistance before the event even happened!

Thank you to Nana Jean for table watching, PBJ providing, tassel making and all the little tasks we gave you!

Thank you to Isabella, Sean and Olivia for giving up so much of your weekend to help us in so many ways.

mark and ling shien bell have graciously offered to give some private lessons while they are here for Tribal Pura. It would be $60 for an hour , private, and he would also do $35 per for 2 people, or $25 for 3. You would have to schedule these ahead of time, and if you are taking the workshops, you would have to schedule during lunch, or at 3;30 on saturday. PM me here on tribe, emailme(jnolan7@wi.rr.com)
