Some of them are especially hilarious. I just found a little book titled "Grave Humor" that presents some of the funniest epitaphs you've ever seen. Many of the examples are more visual then verbal humor, but some of them are quite amusing, especially with the comments posted by the author.
1. Epitaph:
George W. Jr.
May 31, 1927
"I knew this would happen."
Comment: Ever the optimist.
2. Epitaph:
Mary E. Stetter
Oct. 4 1888 June 5, 1968
She is Asleep Not Dead.
Comment:
WAIT!
Somebody let me outta here!
3. Epitaph:
Mable Day
1908 --1996
"Gone to Walmart."
Comment:
So is Mable in heaven or hell?
4. Epitaph:
Roger M. Rothstein
Pardon Me For Not Rising
Comment:
"Ever the gentleman.
5. Epitaph:
Bill Kugle
Jan. 20, 1925 --Dec. 27, 1992

Re: Selected Epitaphs
Fri, May 11, 2012 - 4:06 PMI'd like "Not finished ye..."
But I wouldn't like a headstone, so it's best I take the opportunity to broadcast in advance ;-) -

Not only inexact, but actually non-existent. I checked and found that this famous quote is not on Fields' tombstone. It is based on a joke he once made about "All things considered, I'd rather be living in Philadelphia, when he was still alive. But the only information on is stone is his name and the dates of his birth and his death.
Another good story spoiled by too much information. <G>

Re: Selected Epitaphs
Thu, May 17, 2012 - 2:52 AMIt seems that we are all at the mercy of the executors where epitaphs are concerned. Can you imagine anyone nowadays going to the expense involved in this one?

One at Dursley cemetery reads: "His name" and year of death. Cheapskates!
