FINAL STORY
SERIES 17
EPISODE 21

Synopsis

Norwegians view themselves as being in harmony with nature. There’s also a great sense of national pride in what they regard as the nation's progressive social policies.

Now these two great pillars of self belief have merged on Bastoey Island. There are no walls, no razor wire, no guns trained on the 115 inmates committed to the prison governor’s vision of creating a green jail.

Bastoey, says Governor Oeyvind Alnaes, promises personal redemption through global responsibility.

“We thought that running the prison in an ecological way – is the best way of taking care of nature - and we also thought that using ecology ecological thinking as a tool for teaching the prisoners – responsibility”, says Governor Alnaes.

The prison was declared green just two years ago. The inmates now grow their own food - vehicles run on bio fuel – heating oil has been eliminated - and the Governor soon hopes to have the island completely carbon-neutral. The prison’s organic lamb and beef is prized by regional restaurants.

Built more than a century ago as a boys home, Bastoey’s historic buildings give the institution a rustic, relaxed feel. More Club Med than labour camp say the critics.

As long as they promise to help build the green dream, inmates, who include convicted murderers and rapists – can enjoy horse riding, swimming, cable TV, weekend leave and skiing in the winter.

In this prison – only the free range chickens live behind the wire – and only so they are protected from marauding foxes.

Idyllic it may be, but the Governor reveals there have been two escapes. But in keeping with Norway’s liberal traditions – safety of escapees is more important than recapture.

Q. “So if someone does escape – you only have one request?
A. “We want them to call us – and tell us that they are good... they are well.”
