Re: Jesus
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 4:53 PMWell, since you bring it up:
During Peter's three denials of Christ, one of the men who asked Peter if he knew Jesus was a relative of a person Peter had previously met. What person? -

Re: Jesus
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 12:05 AMJames was probably Jesus, brother. Wasn't it the tax collector, Zacchias' (sp?) relative?. Little Zacchias kept popping up all over the story.
And Jakey... what could be more real than the Jesus whom millions of folks follow? Ficticious or not, he is still a very real presence in our world. Deal with it, as my teen would tell me. It enlivens the conversation.

Re: Jesus
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 1:19 PMWow, ok, since y'all came back to it...
John 18:26 : One of the servants of the high priest, being 'his' kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did I not see thee in the garden with him?
(News to me that Peter had cut off anyone's ear.... ) -

Re: Jesus
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 5:20 PM<<<(News to me that Peter had cut off anyone's ear.... ) >>>
Really ??!!!
As kids we were always told about that one - because Peter struck it off and Jesus stuck it back on - it was a story about non-violence.... Maybe more "Christians" should remember that one when the consider how to deal with evildoers..
Were you brought up in a Christian environment Simpleton.... I know this discussion should not be in the Trivia Tribe, and that talking about religion here is dangerous as it might create flame and/of get us off topic ... but I figure with "Jesus" in the threads title and Dino's non-trivia post - most will give this thread a wide birth anyway LOL -

Re: Jesus
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 5:40 PMI was, sort of. I was a Southern girl as a kid, and we were Sunday Methodists. Mom was Catholic until I was born, (I was Christened in a Catholic church) and then she left the faith a few months later. Biological father was probably a Southern Baptist growing up, but wasn't practicing any religion when I was a kid. I had a very basic Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and church picnics kinda setting till I was about 10. (I distinctly remember gluing cotton balls on colored pictures of sheep during the 'Jesus watches over his flock' lesson.)
Thereafter, (insert massive life changes here) the kid brother and I were rather left to explore religion on our own, and I've become sort of a... how do you say 'mutt' in religious? Collector of pieces of wisdom from various belief systems. Not for or against anything in a structured way. Everyone finds their own language for expressing and experiencing the spark, you know? We all have our heroes, and we don't all have to have the same faith in the same heroes. I think any of the true prophets of any of the established faiths (and especially though of the less-considered faiths) would say something similar. The messenger is all there is to the message. Look a little deeper.
That said, my basic comfort religion is Judeo-Christian, because it is, essentially, my native tongue. As much as I may think and explore and appreciate other belief systems, when the chips are down and I am watching the bus coming at me way too fast... my instinct has me reaching for "Oh My God". I'm sure he or she understands who I am referring to. -

Re: Jesus
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 5:40 PMin the book of luke peter cuts off the ear of one of the soldiers who comes to arrest jesus. jesus heals the ear back on to the man. luke probably tells us this because he was a physician and such things interested him.
no, i was not raised in a christian enviroment (i am anticipating your question) i was raised in anti religious enviroment.
my trivia question: who was the desciple that jesus loved and what was he wearing in the garden? -
-
Re: Jesus
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 5:46 PMDefinitely John according to the NT... was he wearing his party cloths?
(Oh - and I was raised in a Catholic envirnment... like many a good irish catholic - now pretty much laspsed.._

Re: Jesus
Fri, September 21, 2007 - 5:31 PMSimpleton is right
Lets NOT turn this thread into a 'Christians against THEM' thing OK?
There's more than 300 'Religious Tribes' for that purpose.
Since The Holy Bible can be 'interpreted' in too many ways it's impossible to make The Bible a 'point of Trivia'
Save that for the God Tribes.

Thu, September 20, 2007 - 10:15 PMOkay...and his name was Malchus (also a servant). But I don't think anyone knows the name of the guy with the ear cut off and healed. I misunderstood the original question... -

Re: Jesus
Fri, September 21, 2007 - 10:09 AMa woman' hymen can be broken by something other than intercourse. many gymnasts for example break their hymens in the process of their activity. does that mean they are not virgins? i consider women who have been raped or abused to still be virgins. i think people are virgins until they have sex on purpose. -

Re: Jesus
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 12:17 AMOh come on Charles, lighten up. I know some really good Christian trivia. Did you know...
People in the middle ages wore pointed shoes because they thought it warded off witches and evil spirtis in their path.
The "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin" controversy is just plain silly, because angels have very bad balance (thus the wings...). I know this to be true because my chorus is singing about this in a song this Chistmas, IN a church, I might add... so it MUST be true.
Nuns always knew a lot of priests were gay... (no offense to anyone I know and love-- the priests knew the same about the nuns!)
Jesus knew about Buddhism. He may or may not have gone to India, but he knew the concepts and probably reached enlightenment
... how's that, interested yet? -

Fast Facts on the Bible
The Bible Is Our Standard
1. How many books are in the Bible?
The Bible contains 66 books, divided among the Old and New Testaments.
2. How many books are in the Old Testament?
There are 39 books in the Old Testament.
3. How many books are in the New Testament?
There are 27 books in the New Testament.
4. What does "testament" mean?
Testament means "covenant" or "contract."
5. Who wrote the Bible?
The Bible was written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit by over 40 different authors from all walks of life: shepherds, farmers, tent-makers, physicians, fishermen, priests, philosophers and kings. Despite these differences in occupation and the span of years it took to write it, the Bible is an extremely cohesive and unified book.
6. Which single author contributed the most books to the Old Testament?
Moses. He wrote the first five books of the Bible, referred to as the Pentateuch; the foundation of the Bible.
7. Which single author contributed the most books to the New Testament?
The Apostle Paul, who wrote 14 books (over half) of the New Testament.
8. When was the Bible written?
It was written over a period of some 1,500 years, from around 1450 B.C. (the time of Moses) to about 100 A.D. (following the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ).
9. What is the oldest book in the Old Testament?
Many scholars agree that Job is the oldest book in the Bible, written by an unknown Israelite about 1500 B.C. Others hold that the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible) are the oldest books in the Bible, written between 1446 and 1406 B.C.
10. What is the youngest book in the Old Testament?
The book of Malachi, written about 400 B.C.

The Bible was written in three languages: Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek.

The entire New Testament as we know it today, was canonized before the year 375 A.D. The Old Testament had previously been canonized long before the advent of Christ.
15. What does "canon" mean?
"Canon" is derived front the Greek word "Kanon," signifying a measuring rod. Thus, to have the Bible "canonized" meant that it had been measured by the standard or test of divine inspiration and authority. It became the collection of books or writings accepted by the apostles and leadership of the early Christian church as a basis for Christian belief. It is the standard by which all Christians throughout the ages live and worship.

The Codex Vaticanus, which dates from the first half of the fourth Century. It is located in the library of the Vatican in Rome. Thu, September 20, 2007 - 11:47 PMMary may not have been a technical virgin. She was married before she was married to Joseph. Her husband decided to end the union. AFter a certain period of time a woman after being "unmarried" (technical term) was considered to be a virgin again. -

Virgins
Fri, September 21, 2007 - 8:48 AMA Woman can only BE a 'Virgin' until her Hymen is Broken.
ANY Woman who's Hymen is not 'Intact' is considered to have had her Virginity taken away.
A Man can only be a 'Virgin' until he Ejaculates for the first time, after that he is considered 'Sexually Active'. -
-
Re: Virgins
Fri, September 21, 2007 - 9:32 AMWait... what? Really?
I wouldn't consider a male's virginity lost just because he had experienced ejaculation.
(ok, I'm starting a sex thread.) -

Re: Jesus
Fri, September 21, 2007 - 4:35 PMDino, hon. I'm really trying to play along here, but you are beginning to test my patience. While I fully believe that there may be an appropriate tribe for the testing of patience, THIS TRIBE is about testing trivia.
I have absolutely no problem with you posting religious trivia. I have no problem with your posting religious trivia only about the religion you prefer. I even think that there is a great deal of fascinating trivia that could be posted about Christianity, and if you actually know anything at all about it, I invite you to show us that. I for one would be quite happy to learn something from you.
But if all you know about Christianity is what you are able to copy and paste, perhaps your time would be better spent learning from your texts, rather than pushing them on others.
Trivia? Anyone?

Fri, September 21, 2007 - 6:39 PMthis definitely wins the Most Bizarre Thread contest ..... from Jesus to hymens to ejaculations to Annie Lennox and back again to Jesus. TOO FUNNY!
BTW, there is a procedure now that is commonly used to "restore the hymen" and therefore a woman's virginity in places where you need to be a virgin to marry.
