Dark Drummer Productions (Dark Side Tribal and Different Drummer Belly Dancers) is proud to present the Bloomington, IN, stop of the Durga Tour on Sunday, June 7.

We're so pleased to be bringing Tempest back to Bloomington for more dark & dramatic bellydance encounters-- and this time, she's bringing Asharah and Tim Rayborn with her!

Note: We've just extended the early registration deadline to May 23! Register now at http://www.ddbd.org/durga to get the workshops and Motif for a steal.

Tempest and Asharah will be teaching two workshops during the day on June 7:

Danse Mécanique: Elegant Movement for Tribal Fusion Bellydance
11:00 am - 1:00 pm
Instructor: Asharah

Adventures In Steampunk!
2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Instructor: Tempest

At 7 pm that evening, Tempest, Asharah, and Tim will be facilitating an interactive performance event called Motif, an experimental gathering, merging music, dance, and ritual. This is NOT a formal performance - it is a communal interaction and lead experience. The event will have a formal beginning to awaken our space, and will be guided throughout the evening by the lead dancers and musicians, and will have a formal conclusion. Participants are welcome to bring rugs, pillows, etc. Musicians are welcome to bring their instruments, and dancers should come prepared to dance!

Both workshops and Motif will be held at Panache School of Ballroom & Social Dance in Bloomington, IN.

HIPNOTIC
Tribal Belly Dance from Chicago

Saturday December 6, 2008
Bloomington, IN

Hipnotic has been performing in the Chicago area since 2002. With a firm foundation in American Tribal Style, they have integrated African, Indian, Hip Hop, Gothic and Flamenco styles to make their performances interesting, colorful and mesmerizing. They are dedicated to bringing a fresh look to tribal style belly dance and truly believe in the power of the troupe, as well as the energy created within when dancing.

Belly Dance Workshops
10 – Noon: Floored! - A Turkish Drop Workshop (Limit 10 participants)
The Turkish Drop is a well-known belly dance move. Though it is not performed in traditional Egyptian styles of dance, it can be found in Turkish Belly Dance as well as other styles of dance such as Flamenco and many dancers add it to their fusion choreographies, and tribal stylizations. The Turkish Drop requires a combination of strength and flexibility to be done correctly to minimize injury. This workshop explores the physical requirements of performing a safe Turkish Drop.

1:30 – 3:30: Action Extraction - Cues From Choreography
How many times have you taken a workshop with a 5 minute choreography? How many times do you remember the choreography? That's what we thought - we don't remember them either! This workshop is designed to help you pull out choreography moves that you want to tribalize! Learn how to identify the beginning, middle and end of the move and ideas on HOW to end them. Use this skill to create moves from your favorite belly dancing DVDs!

Performance – 7:30 pm
Don’t miss seeing Hipnotic live in performance, along with Dark Side Tribal and other amazing dancers! If you’re interested in performing in the show, contact Dark Side Tribal at darksidetribaldance@gmail.com.

Location
Both workshops and the performance will be held at Harmony School, located at 909 E. 2nd Street in Bloomington, IN.

Cost
Turkish Drop workshop: $40 ($50 after Nov. 13)
Action Extraction workshop: $30 ($40 after Nov. 13)
Both workshops: $60 ($80 after Nov. 13)

Tickets to the show are $10 (or $8 with student ID)

In another few days, you'll be able to register online and pay using Paypal at www.darksidetribal.com. If you prefer to write a check and mail in your registration, you can download a pdf flyer and registration form at http://tinyurl.com/3k9b37.

Hi ladies!

LJ said to run this by you. I'm a member of the National Eating Disorders Awareness Week committee here in Fort Wayne, and we'd like to invite Troupe Kali-Ma (or any individual dancers/duets, in case the entire troupe can't make it) to dance during our "Evening of Expression" on Tuesday, Feb. 27th. It's at night (the entire event runs from 6:30-8:30 PM), and we're thinking of having the bellydancers dance close to the beginning of the show, between 6:30 and 7 PM? It's at IPFW, in Neff Hall, room 101 (recital hall for music concerts, presently), so it has a nice-sized stage. Other goings-on at the event include music, interpretive dance done by Brittany Coughlin (prof at IPFW), readings, a skit, and discussion at the end... And the entire week involves events that raise awareness of eating disorders and promoting a "love your genes" perspective.

Could you let me know as soon as you can if you can dance/are interested? Thanks so much! And if it's not an option, don't worry about it.

I finally had a chance to read all the old posts (although not enough time to look at all the links) and I just wanted to bring up Christine's thread about tribal cues again. Aren't there set cues out there that have been created by groups like Fat Chance, etc? I'm pretty sure I've even seen videos on their sites that teach their particular cues. Is there objection to using something that's "pre-fab"?

Related question: when people are talking about tribal style improv, isn't that different from our balinat (yes, I just murdered the spelling, but you know what I meant) in that there is a leader, but everyone if following her (I mean, doing what she does) rather than what we do where one person is just improving and everyone else is doing one move behind her? Wow, that was a long and confusing way of putting it! Anyway, all I'm asking is: isn't tribal style improv different from our balinat (still misspelled)?
Seriously, Friday I was sitting in on a boat in a lagoon in the Cook Islands and thinking what would be I doing if I was home (thinking that I would be doing something boring like sitting on the couch watching tv), but then I figured that it was 7pm on Friday, and I was missing dance class, and I was really sad.

On a postive note, I saw Miss South Pacific dance last night, and she was impressive. They did the fastest umi's that make the drum solo ones look slow. Plus, she would dance in short skirts, and she had the most graceful legs while dancing. http://www.misssouthpacific.ws/

Black cotton harem pants (these are REALLY easy to make)

Some type of satin skirt (we can shop moondance.com) Red? Black?

Common wrap top, I think that we can also look into moon dance for these (be-jeweled tops)

Matching coin scarves (one in silver one in gold, and matching jewelry)

OR if you can think of something that will make us unique, but still have some affiliation to taleeba (ie matching fabric underscarves etc)

It needs to be powerful,

and don't think that you will be the sole person doing all the work because in my experience a troupe dance works best when a troupe choreographs, it works on the strengths of its dancers.

Alright ladies so I have been thinking about our fantastic new troupe and things that we could do as a unified group. One thing that really excites me is the idea of creating body cues to be able to do improv for a performance. Its not really improv (please keep reading) it would be, for example, like if we decided that the move snake arms then moved above the head is a signal to move to the right with another move. Catch my drift? Something to think about because it could be really amazing if we worked at it. I know troupes personally that do this so if others are interested I can "research" to see the fundamentals and then we could go from there. I hope I have made sense and that I've gotten everyone else a little excited. Give me your feedback. Love and positive energy to all!
