As I was in my bed, trying to sleep, I was thinking of costuming for the upcoming Ren Fest. (everyone knows how crazy I am about fabric) If we are truly Ghawazee from Egypt then we are not subject to the European codes of dress. So we can wear any color and any fabric that we find is close to being what would have been worn by 'us' in the 1700's. Maybe we don't have to be drab little peahens, but bold and bright pea hens!!!! I say we wear our black gauze pants, and our red or orange coats ( which color that we choose) and belts and (which ever) King James be damned!!! (As long as we are paid our 40 shillings)

Re: Fabric restictions for Ren Faire
Wed, April 12, 2006 - 9:19 PMHowdy all, I'm Lael. I'm (obiously) not a member of your troupe, but I am a fellow belly dancer (well, a student anyway) and a fellow ren fest performer. I just thought I'd offer a comment on Razi's post.
I'm most familiar with the Elizabethan era in which, for the most part, anyone could wear any color they wanted (except for purple) as long as they were willing to pay a Sumptuary Tax for dressing outside of their station. To me, that's reason enough to be bold and bright peahens! I looked at the tribe photos and your orange ghawazee coats are gorgeous!
Also, I was looking at the KY ren fest's website earlier today. They said:
"We are expecting to see Pirates, Fairy's, Klingons, Vikings, Celts and other creatures.
The timeline for the faire is 14th Century thru the 18th Century (1300-1799)."
So it sounds like you can wear any color you want. You definitely have to out-dress the Klingons!
Best of luck to you. I can't wait to see pictures.

Re: Fabric restictions for Ren Faire
Thu, April 13, 2006 - 5:52 AMI have to agree with Lael and Razi. First off I think that a dance troupe is expected to be the brightest gaudiest member of a Ren faire cast with an exception taken to the pirates (they are a dandy lot but that is another discussion all together!) I also do not want us to look like cookie cutter dancers and I like vareity in our costuming. Also, Lael I am so glad to have you on Troupe Malek. I am soliciting any recommendations from seasoned faire folk. We have been dancing together for a long time and many of us are reenactors but a Ren fest is a different animal than SCA or other reenactment events.

Thu, April 13, 2006 - 5:53 AMOh and I love the pea hen connotation! Razi you couldn't be a pea hen if we glued a beak to her head! (Although she does squack alot)

Re: Fabric restictions for Ren Faire
Thu, April 13, 2006 - 12:59 PMPEA-HEN??? But of course! I also love the many-coloured look, but I am dead set against wearing our current ghawazee coats for any performance except the big troupe number. Ladies, it is too damn hot!! I think we should use the fabric that has been purchased, with the options of adding to or changing some of the colors. Along with decorating. I think it's a great suggestion that we are not necessarily subjects of Scotland, but are Egytpian and with the exception of purple, we should feel free to doll-up as we see fit.
We may get a cool day in June and I am not opposed to bringing our current ghawazee coat along, but speaking for myself (as I always do...It's PERI-MENOPAUSE!!!!), I would like summertime fabric. Not that anyone is disputing this...I'm just burning up from gardening in unseasonably hot April weather! Where's the beach???

Thu, April 13, 2006 - 1:08 PMI think diversity is our friend! Except for the big stage show I would like to see lots of color and diversity so wear what we make and add to it. Please look at the lovely Ren faire photos on the link I posted from Southern California

Re: Fabric restictions for Ren Faire
Tue, April 18, 2006 - 2:30 AMYou just now found them? I've been returning to their site for ideas for years... any time i need to get motivated.
Ya know, a nice solid gauze makes a fine light gwazhee, and a thin linen will keep you as cool as can be had in that weather. Last I looked, they had a good selection of gaudy colors at the Hancocks on Preston. Or you could get some online - I think Denver Fabrics had some too. Or a light raw silk? You could have a troupe 'dye the coat' day at whoever's house has room. A few big pots, a few bottles of Rit, a hot stove, and dere ya go.
Missing you guys... see you this Saturday? -

Re: Fabric restictions for Ren Faire
Tue, April 18, 2006 - 6:50 AMWe have 55 plus yards of broad cloth and black gauze. So I am tracking you on the fabric choices! I do want to make a time to come pour through your costumes for some inspiration! This Sat is Thunder. Are folks still going to Sumshees?
