Hi there, it's me again. I thought I'd start a new thread to post resources on historical belly dance. I hope that's not too presumptuous. Even if you're already aware of this stuff, perhaps having it all in one topic would be useful?

If you haven't seen the Belly Dance Museum already: www.belly-dance.org/index.html (click on museum) there's a specific gahwazee link under "historical stuff"

If some of you Ladies are SCA dancers, you're probably already aware of the SCA Middle Eastern Dance Tribe scamedance.tribe.net but I thought I'd post it to be sure.

Good idea we have historical stuff kind spread out. Tonight I am sitting down with my book "Serpent of the Nile." If you have never read it ...get a copy. Our local University has a copy as well. It has gorgeous pictures and alot of history as well. I am also a memer of the SCA site too!

I was given this link by another Ren Faire dancer that portrays Ghawazee as well as Rom. There are some nice descriptions of dance steps!

I am beggining to get a story together. I think as a troupe we decided we were more comfortable with a Mid East personna than a Rom Gypsy personna due to our expereince and knowledge. So, how did we get to be in Scotland? While we have a vast time line to work with 1300-1799 the faire will be set in the 14th and 15th century. So I ask, How did an Egyptian dance family (Ghawazee) make it to Edinburgh if we are not Gypsies? We know the Ghawazee dancers were performing in the early 1700's but have no historical accounts of them performing outside of Egypt until the Napoleanic wars (the fringes of our time lines) The only answer I can come up with is the Ottoman Traders. We can be set firmly in the Early 16th or late 16th century and we have a reason to be dancing as part of a faire. We do not have to be Turks as people from all over the Mid East threw their lot in with the traders. So here is a question? Did we get there on foot or by boat.
Please read the attached link and think on it....

Looking at the trade route and the area that was the Ottoman Empire during the 1500's, I would say we got to Edinburgh on foot. The caravans that traveled following the Walking Drum would've also provided a lot of protection. That's not to say that some obviously went north and crossed into Scandinavia by boat and then went south into Scotland, but my guess is, a family of dancers would have made better money &/or trade following the roads.
Constantinople, Budapest, etc. would have been major commerce cities of the time. What does everyone think?
