Hey there Troupe Malek and esp the understudies. June 2nd is the opening day for the Ren Faire and it is very possible that no understudies will be at the Ren faire the opening weekend. (We want to work out all of the first day kinks before we send you into the trenches) I want to encourage the understudies to come out and perform at Safiyyah's benefit. Many of you know Selimah (Pat Stanfield/ Mystic Hips) and her beautiful dancing daughter Safiyyah. What alot of folks do not know is that Safiyyah struggles with MS and there are times she can barely move let alone dance. On June 2nd is a fundraiser for Saffiyah with three live music groups. I want to encourage all understudies to join me in performing "Sadiya" (Zill and Tamborine piece) to live music at the benefit. I will be burning rubber to get to the benefit from the Ren faire. We will wear our Ren faire garb in the show (that way I don't have to change!!)
See the details below!

Keep Safiyyah Dancing Benefit
Saturday June 2nd
Doors open at 6:00 p.m
Show Starts at 7:00 p.m.
Saint Helens Catholic Church Gym
4005 Dixie Highway
Louisville, Ky 40216
Call Darkdove/Selimah aka Patt cell # 502-445-3178

From Selimah:
My daughter Safiyyah has Aggressive Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis. This means she has had times when she cannot walk, or drive, or work, much less dance.
The Medicines she has been taking over the last three years are not working for her. The new medicine they are treating her with is very expensive. Not to mention her loss of work while recieving treatment.

We are having a Benefit Show to help her out, along with a silent auction.

We would like to represent the many styles of Belly Dance. And have lots of fun.

We already have Snakes Rising, Il Troubadore, Dale, Selimah, Soraya, Taletha, Laura, JaeJae, Belly -D and many more confirming every day!

Check this out:

snakesrising.com/_wsn/page12.html

Snakes Rising now has a fundraising page for the "Keep Safiyyah Dancing" benefit. Between now and June 2nd (date of the hafla) we will be donating $5 to $10 for every item purchased via this page.

Then we'll see you at the event, of course. You'll be able to win Red Tour tickets there at the auction/ raffle. too!

From my perspectives here are some positives: Men of Thunda will drum for our 2:30 show (Awesome!) We are a hit in the parade and made alot of noise. We are a colorful addition to the Faire. The pub show set up rocks and we made super tips in the pub. We grew in our improv ability by leaps and bounds in ONE weekend. The site is beautiful and all of the entertainers are class acts.
Set backs: We had to haul all of our equipment in on our backs no driving the car right up to the gate to load and unload. There is no sound system. I bought a 170 watt system for when we are not working with drummers. The mud was horrid. The camping bathrooms are not completed. Our shows are at 2:30, 3:30, and 4:30 pant.pant.pant! The mainstage was awful lonely on Sunday very few patrons on this day. And finally a black head wrap on your head is like dancing with an oven mit on your head hot, hot, hot!

We will be taking the personna of a 1700's Ghawazee dance troupe from Egypt. We will be designing a more summer friendly Ghawazee costume and be learning more about being in the first person personna. This is a big deal and I am stoked.

As we are shorring up our "Story" (how we got where we are, who we are etc) I though it might be helpful to hear other MED Ren groups stories for inspiriation..... I have the storyline from Oojam, a California Ren Faire dance and music troupe. Also, I have invited a few of their members onto our chat line for any pearls of wisdom that will be helpful to us in our caravan travels....
Oojam's story:

My father Mahmoud had grown ill and was unable to lead the caravan to the many faires to trade our spices, fabrics and jewels so his oldest daughter of his first wife and her husband Hamzah have decided to do it for him. His oldest son Azir was away fighting wars when we headed off, but we ran into him on the way so now he has joined us as well.

My character is a mid-wife (so when I'm absent I'm out delivering a baby). On our travels we came across a Jewish woman who was in labor. Her husband said if it was another girl he would have them both killed, so I lied and told him the boy child was born dead, then disappeared in the night with his new baby girl to save her and her mother from death. This is how we ended up with Hadara.

Then we were traveling the road and came across a slave girl who had run away,(Tamara), so we took her in and now we want to test her skill to see if she is worthy of being in our tribe. Then we make her dance and ask the audience's opinion. At this point the men fight over who will marry her, at which time, my dear sister-in-law Somatrdevi jumps up and complains that she has been waiting a long time to marry and why shouldn't she get to be the first to marry. At this point I make her show off her assetts (dance) and ask for a bridal price of X amount of camels from diffierent men in the audience.

On to Mercy and her daughter Lynnaya, their caravan was attacked on the road and they were the only 2 survivors left, so we scooped them up too!(Mercy dances in honor of those who she loved or in celebration of her good fortune to be rescued)

some of our drummers are soldiers in training, one who has a bad eye already plays,Halil, the man who saved Azir's life in battle and took a blow for it. Now they are close friends and he lives with us on the caravan route and is one of our musicians (drummer)

These are just a few of our story pieces. We try to add to it every weekend, so that at the end of the run we have told the overall story of Oojam.

Hope this helps! We even let the little ones (5 total from ages 4-6 yrs) run around the stage and even dance a set! This really gets the audience going!

The most important thing is to talk to your audience. I sometimes will just give them things to do during the show. I teach them to Zaghreet, or tell them to hiss if she is very snake like. I tell them that "Aiwa" means yes and "Hizzy, Hizzy Habibi: means to shake it my sweety or dearest. We even yell out" Yella, Yalla " which means come on! This makes them feel good to know how to respond to something they like.

Good luck and Please keep me posted. I'm anxious to hear how things go!

May the sun always shine upon you,
Marjhani

It definitely has an Ethnic feel with a touch of glamour so I beleive it will be a nice represenative for our running statement on the left hand side of the home page:
"Malek is a troupe of independent artists representing the many faces of Middle Eastern Dance. We have performed since 2000 at Ethnic festivals, black tie galas and medieval banquets." Frank should have the home page up with an "Under construction" disclaimer on it by the end of the week.
Ou web addy will be:
www.malekdance.com
