To get folks in the mood for faire.. and to get into a Irish-y mode. I'm listed some of my favorite movies to watch to get the right feel.. Please feel free to add your own.. most of the ones listed I own and plan on showing either next week or soon at a movie night.

Quiet Man - John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara - One I play every year at St. Patrick's Day. Enjoyable movie all the way through, get to see John Wayne in a great brawl, plus him boot O'Hara's character all the way back to brothers. Premise of it is John Wayne's character is a famous american boxer who'se returning home to Ireland to his home town where he hasn't been back to since he was little. He's trying to forget his past and begin his life anew, he runs into a hot spirited Red hed (Those will be the death of me I know) who he falls for and runs afoul of her brother. It's from the early 50s I think but still a great movie. I have it on DVD and VHS

Darby O'Gill and the Little People - Sean Connery; Disney flick but done back when they weren't trying to be so PC all the time. You see a really young Sean Connery. Has Leprechauns, pookas and Banshees, not to mention Marty's favorite drinking song. Another St. Paddy's Day tradition of mine. Gives you an idea of how myth and religion work hand and hand in Ireland. The DVD I have has some cool extras.

Boondock Saints - Great movie.. modern though but has some great quotes cool gun battles and just a overall feel that get's in the mood to be a Irish bad ass.

Braveheart - Not my favorite movie.. I commonly refer to it as the "lawndart movie" for the amount of swords tossed at folks, but I love the Irishman, as well as some of Braveheart's cohorts. Some decent fight scenes, but it's freaky looking at wrinkly Mel Gibson trying to play like he's really young and trying to seduce the young scottish girl who'se storyline wise only a few years younger than him. DVD and somewhere I think I still have a VHS copy.

Rob Roy - Liam Neeson; Came out the same time as Braveheart, but my favorite. It get's you more of the feel of the highlands versus lowlands attitudes, something resembled in the irish. Favorite scene is the opening one with the tinker thieves.. So much would like to duplicate that one somehow. This one though later than our time period is better at getting me in the right attitude to be Irish at faire. - Have it on DVD, used to have it VHS too, but gave it away. Great soundtrack too for getting in the mood

The Field - Richard Harris; Kind of depressing look at the Irish farmer, but it gives you the feel how the landless in Ireland where thought of.. like Tinkers Gives you an idea of the farmer and what they did to build their land into something. Don't have a copy of it, but usually you can find it to rent

Secret of Roan Inish; Deals with the coast of Ireland, myths like Selkies and such. It's entertaining but can be slow in spots. I like it for it's myth like quality and the love of the sea. I think I loaned or gave my VHS copy away.

Leprechauns - No not the horror flicks, This one had Whoopi Goldberg in it as a Banshee. Loosly based on irish myths. I forget who all is in it, though they are well known. Decent enough flick, nice scenery. VHS

Leprechaun (Horror) movie series - Sheesh I don't know how many of these movies they've put out but amazingly enough they do toss a few tidbits of true Irish mythology in there.. like one had him trying to take a bride.. and if she sneezed three times without someone saying bless you she would of been his bride.. I later found the reference in actual myth lore on Leprechauns. They've had him in the hood, in space, amoungst just terrorizing normal folks. Don't own any copies

Circle of Friends; Minnie Driver, Chris O'Donnel - Another movie I love, I use it to get into accent easily and just like the story. I just like the feel of it. VHS

Fighting Prince of Donegal - The only movie so far I've ever found about the 16th Century Irish at all. A Disney flick done in a Errol Flynn style, they tend to try to make the English look nicer than in real life during the time. Lead character is Hugh O'Donnell, his best friend is Henry O'Neil (who is a ladies man in this one) Kind of cool movie, hard to find though, luckily I own it on VHS.

Riverdance - Musical, lots of dancing Michael Flatley trying to show how much a pimp daddy he is. (He's always looking like he's going I can have that one, had that one, will have that one, to every woman he dances near). Cool instruments, love the Uilean Pipes and the giant irish drums - VHS and bought mom a DVD I think

Commitments - A movie about a band in reland who tries to make it big playing the blues/R&B. Love the soundtrack.. tons of cool quotes and just a enjoyable flick. Don't own

Matchmaker - Jeannine Garafolo, Dennis Leary - Dennis only plays a cameo in this someone weak Romantic Comedy. It does give you the feel of matchmakers and has some nice scenery but is kind of weak overall; Have it VHS

Waking Ned Devine - Funny movie, haven't seen it in awhile to give you more than a premise though.. Ned Devine passes away right after he wins the lottery, a bankrupt town pretends he's still alive so they can collect the winnings.

Far and Away - Tom Cruise Nicole Kidman; I've never been a big Tom Cruise fan and this movie is what dropped my opinoin even more. He potrays a Irishman who ends up journeying to the Americas to find his fortune. Don't own it, don't want to own it.

The Englishmen who went up the Hill but cam down a mountain - Hugh Grant; Romantic Comedy, and it's about Wales, but it's another that just gets me in the right mindset about country life and Celtic pride.

Irish Jam - Eddie Griffin - Ugh awful movie, the only reason I list is so you don't rent it or buy it. Premise is Eddie Griffin wins a poetry contest writing the lyrics from a rap song of some rapper to win a contest where he wins a pub, he goes to claim it and miscommunication and hilarity ensues. Scenery is the only reason to watch it.

Great Irish Drinks - Kind a mix of a documentary and travel guide. Makes you really thirsty. Great scenery shots and is interesting to find about your favorite alchohols. Must be made by company that has put out several videos like this as I recognized scenes from other simliar moves about ireland. Try getting it on Netflix or Blockbuster as far as renting it. Wouldn't mind owning it.. But be prepared to be thirsty

I'll probably think of more movies later that will get you in the right mood for faire and don't hesitate to share yours., or your opinoins on videos I've posted on

It's christmas time, and that means that Huntington blvd has been
transformed into Candlestick Lane. For those of you who haven't heard about
this, it's like Christmas Tree lane. Lots of lights and cute decorations. I
was thinking about getting a group together to go walk along it this next
weekend. We can meet at my house, which is just one street south of
Huntington, and after we can come back to hang out/watch movies/ have warm
drinks. What I need to know is if anyone is indeed interested. If you are I
need to know what time is good for you, along with how many people will be
coming with you. This way I can clean the house before you come!

Happy Holidays!

(This was sent out as an email also, please forgive the repeating)

Ok, I'll definately be having a costume contest, prizes for male and female, first second and third place.
We also need to come up with possible games of skill that fit the theme of stranded on an island, and methods of gambling for cast-aways. Thoughts?

There has to be one of the ladies (or gentlemen) in our guild who knows how to knit. I have tried to teach myself over the past week and have failed miserably, so now I go to you guys. Anyone willing to teach me and a few others how to knit? It would be a great way to spend downtime at faire.

This event takes place in your back yards, I thought I would post the info should any of you guys be interested in going. I would love to hit it if it weren't so close to all of these other events and gas prices would relent a little.

Okay, since Baseball season is almost over, and due to me moving soon and not being able to afford Golden Gate, I'm doing the baseball night on Friday..anyone interested can come along. I'll try to get more comp tickets so that all that you'll have to pay for is any snacks at the stadium. This will be the last night they do fireworks so we'll catch a fireworks display as well. I'm housesitting so we can at my mom's snazzy new house and go as a group from there. Right now I plan to have about 12-15 tickets, so if you want to come along let me know. I'll post this on the egroup as well.

St. Columcille's will be at Golden Gate in full swing. We will have a full encampment with 20' frontage and 15' depth a harp, wall tent, tables, etc.. We will have roughly 15 Irish throwing darts and hope to have a competition at some point in the day. Perhaps someone might know if there is a way we can set aside a spot or whom to ask for such an event. We can do it for prestige or perhaps Tim and I can come up with some sort of reward between us for the victors.
Anyways ... our gatelist is 34 people with 23 of those being Guildmembers. We have grown quite a bit.
Everyone is looking forward to seeing you all again (some meeting you for the first time).
I still have not had any word from Golden Gate Admin on whether we are encamped next to one another or not. Also, I have not heard about parking, camping, etc. So, barring those things, everything is well on track for an incredible event.
See you all soon.

Fair Oaks From & To's of 2005

I sure did wait awhile to do this, and hopefully my Gnomish mind can remember it all. For a faire we're not in costume we had fun, even for all the work.

From Me & Christina being the Won Ton Express on the trip up their and everyone trying kill us because we were in Evelyn's car to the return trip and walkie Talkie coincidences others had that alerted them of the massive traffic backup

From having both Marty & Ali being ill most of the weekend to Ali feeling so much better after honking his cookies in the brush

From Rob insomnia tour he seems to have every year at Fair Oaks to some hissy fits held by others who went with more sleep than Rob

From folks managing to break a urinal (I'm not really sure I want to know how they did it.) to the women having wonderful potty parties of their own.

From my chuckling every time I heard over the air "Tiny, Tim wants you." (It took forever for someone to figure out why I was giggling) To Michael getting to take over Ryan's job of busting Yellow shirts when one tried to sneak his friend into faire.

From Me & Ian almost beating up a Little kid to take his Millennium Falcon inflatable mattress to star wars lingo going on over the walkies during night patrols aka Red Five going in..

From Daniels group looking all Irish-y as they marched to the small world we live in in that my new business partner was one of those gate listed with him, who was gate listed with us and I had nothing o do with it too (heck didn't even knew she was going to the faire till that week)

From Tiny finding Daniels was a good walking companion as he's so pretty that Tiny's chances improved just by the numbers of da womenz dat stalked the elf. to Daniels astonishment of how evil Tim is to his poor wee gnomish ghillie. (Also I have since learned never ask Tim what you need to do to end your ghillie-dom when he's been drinking)

From Tim's making me cry about dissing my eye (Made a Rhyme) to the threat of the late night flash dance of Tim outside my tent

From the Church people making me almost become pagan with their tude towards us to almost having to body tackle a middle aged church lady who refused to stop for a check point

From the turmoil of crud that went on Saturday night to seemingly redemption on Sunday while Yellow shirts walked by while our illustrious leader making sure one of the patriarchs of faire was cared for.

From Ian being the only person who represented us in the wet boxer/t-shirt contest they had to the fact apparently he showed more of himself than we wanted to see (thank goodness for me being gone during this part, this year I'm not bemoaning missing the contest, so though it saddened me to not see our guild yayas on display (none of the ladies represented something about cold and water, no sure why they'd deny our guild a return title)

From Rob getting a new Axe for his birthday to the fact that Rob kept offering to use it for any problem came up (The OBGYN exam was a bit far fetched use for an axe)

From Ian getting a paddling on his Birthday to Rob's use of hickory that made a resounding and quite distinctive noise for anyone to hear. (I fear for Dwight & Christina as B liked spanking Ian to much)

From the Karaoke on Strand Night to those "Star Watchers" in the fields

From folks calling me Gnome and these people who've never met me before or seen me wearing the Gnome hat referring to me as such (I keep telling the guys it's a chick magnet) to learning the hard way to not drink on a empty stomach when your dehydrated.. oww that hurt.. but I still have not suffered all the ill effects of faire

From the start of the Flying Squadron to them really need cool names like Hairy Gomez and Ice Box and such (next year their talking bicycles with bells and baseball cards in the spokes)

From all the worries that were shared by us over the faire to folks complementing us on how safe and secure they felt and how smoothly the Sunday exodus went

Overall we've got plenty of positive feedback for our time in Fair Oaks with other gigs being offered just from that. For all the work it was fun, and thanks again to Daniel and his crew who not only represented the O'Neills well for this faire but provided us with the numbers on security that allowed such great coverage... as always I apologize if I forgot or remembered those things that folks want to forget (aka Mike's love of teabags). If you have a "From & To's" to add do so.. until later remember Gnome is where the heart is..

It has been made know to me that far too few people throw parties, and if I don't rise to the occasion and throw one for the 4th of July, certain people will be left party-less. As I believe that not being able to attend a good bbq on the 4th of July is a crime against alcohol, charred meat, explosives, and everything else holy, I am going to have to throw this party.
Now, one difficulty is that I'm out of town from 6am tomorrow until July 2nd. Where? Alaska. This means no cell phones, no internet, nothing. I'll be on a boat in the middle of nowhere. So sometime on the afternoon of the 3rd, I'm going to start making phone calls and get this party together. So that we can have a PROPER party, I'll probably go the evening of the 3rd until the night of the 4th, so that we can party on the 3rd and relax and blow stuff up on the 4th.
So prepare yourselves, I'll be throwing a party with just about no planning on the 3rd and the 4th.

Okay folks it's that time again for "Grizzlies Baseball". I'll be hitting up from contact for tickets pretty soon, so if you guys want to go, please contact me asap. So I can get the proper amount fo tickets. Last year I picked up 20 of them and only 10 of us showed up. I'll be picking a movie night so that after the game we go out onto the field and watch a movie on the jumbo-trawn type thing. If there's a specific night that you want to go in mass let me know. As the movie thing isn't required but is fun. And now that Fagan's is but a block away we can have fun before and after the game.

Here is something I willing to help sponsor. It would be for Saturday night and Michael has already offered to do the cooking and recipe. I want to do a giant pot of Chili. That we'd have for dinner for Saturday night for all of us Security workers. I'm thinking we should also get someone to make Cornbread, maybe even a smaller Vegitarian Chili for those who are not into beef. Anything else can be potlock.. but I was figuring Chili just because we could keep it cooking for over a long time so as folks can get a chance they could get a bowl. Let me know if this idea will work or if you have better ideas to improve on this or if no one gets a rat's butt and would like me to go jump on my thumb and spin.

Some of already have tickets and some still need them, but here's the info on the picnic I've been talking about.

~Club Picnic~
Come join us for our 4th annual club picnic in the park. This year we are going to be celebrating our 5th Anniversary as a club. It will be on Saturday, June 18th from 10am to 6pm. This year we will be having a TRI-TIP LUNCH (tri-tip, salad, beans, pilaf & roll) for $7.00 and a kids HOTDOG LUNCH (hotdog, chips, cookie & toy) for $3.00. Free punch and water will be provided. When you buy a lunch ticket, you are given a chance to win a door prize (20" TV for adults/13" TV for kids). There is going to be a horseshoe tournament starting at noon (sign-ups are from 10am to noon), music all day long and raffles. We will have sack races and the punt, pass & kick game for the kids. Park entrance fee is $4.00. Please remember this is a fundraiser, so please don't bring your own BBQ pits. You can bring your own bottle. Call the club line at 227-1960 for tickets or you may purchase them at the picnic. All Raider Fans Welcome!

~Fireworks Stand~
This year we will be selling Phantom Fireworks from June 28th through July 4th. If you are a member and are 18 years of age or older and would like to volunteer your time selling at our booth, please give us a call on the club line (227-1960) so we can sign you up for a time slot. The fireworks stand is our biggest fundraiser of the year and it takes a lot of time, energy and participation from our membership to keep the stand running throughout the week. If you can spare a day or even a few hours helping out it would be greatly appreciated. Our stand will be located in the FoodMaxx parking lot on West Shaw between Marks and Valentine. We are planning to sell from 10am to 10pm during that week. On the 4th we will close up at around 5pm. Hope to see everyone out there!

Irish Sex Calorie Counter

The following is taken from "The Book of Blarney" by Anthony Butler.. under the subject of "Sex Blarney". Couldn't figure were to post this, so I figured you guys would get a kick out of it..

Basically what the author submits is that what your dates eats in the way of food is how far your going to get, as in entials with women of Irish descent. Two other factors to succesful dating is the owning of a mini-car adn visiting anicent celtic landmarks. The following is a rough guide to the hormone level of any girl who selects each meal..

Blarney Sex Carlorie Counter

Eggs (Boiled, Fried, Poached) - Zero (Artic Frigidity)

Drisheen - Absolute Zero (Subject kicks companion over left eyebrow and gallops into the night)

Grilled Salmon Steak - Subject wil allow hand holding but will become ticklish if she takes a mixed salad with it

Matelote A La Bourguignon - Warmer - Subject willlisten to blue jokes and permits biting of right ear lobe

Meat Balls in Tomatoe Sauce - Can be promising but subject tends to become sentimental and may waste valuable time talking about her old Irish mother.

Irish Stew - Useful but subject suffers from the effect as Meat Balls. Subject tends to be patriotic and violently condemns the base, brutal and bloody Saxons.

Chicken in Champagne Oasis - Subject permits ear nibbling, light kissing and handllng of underlying bone structure. Can be socialistic so see she doesn't get the left wing

Grilled Chops and Chips - Progress, Will tell him jokes and later will allow a modest ration of after meal mini-car-caresses

Grilled Steak - Victory, The subject tends to pant and if bitten on the right ear lobe is liable to bite right back. Permits embraces that her mother would approve of. Her mother isn't around so be satisfied with what you've got

Hope these help you in all your Irish lass dating

Sorry about the delays, and as per folks request I'll break it a part so it can be easier to read

From Vernon's Duck Romance to Michael & Tiny getting really intimate during a game of "Stretch and Stab" (Get your minds out of the gutter)

From the Keg of Guinness that took plenty to the City and State of Inebriation to free Guinness being offered that had so many grabbing every spare empty container to fill, even some that weren't

From the Noggin Knocking that seemed to occur on Sunday (Yes Rob insured a good year for us) to Vernon winning the right to bear the Gallowglass standard.

From the endless B-day songs that got Lacey quite blitzed to the enjoyable paddling that we gave her (Jeez I'm becoming my mother's son)

From the horde of sweets that Dustin plied us with all weekend to watching B bounce across the site hopped up on a Espresso cookie (Think Ricochet Rabbit)

From Michaels death defying lightsabre duel on the bridge (including a mad dive to keep one from falling into the drink) to the evil gleam that Bethany seemed to have when she chased you with a light sabre going "I'm going to kill you" (So wrong on so many levels, still picturing her one day going psycho on Dwight when he says no to "Little Nemo")

From all the new shiney pieces of armor to a couple new sharp and pointies (started a Tribe on Tribe.net about such a subject)

From our gig with court bringing them the latest sail from a sunk Spanish Galleon (Decent gig until they invited us into the march) to Me getting to bear the Kennooch's Standard during the a clash with the English (St Magdeline's is becoming our sparring partner at faires)

From me getting new wooden plates and a Noggin and leaving them at home to me getting a new sword (like Rob's, what sucked was it cost me about the same as me Irish Hand & Half dagger (125))

From me being herald for this faire (still recovering my damaged knees) to the new challenge rules taking place.

From me finally getting the last x-mas present done (Ali is the last of my x-mas list, dang car hitting me, got a Quaich(sp?)) to me handing out these cool Claddagh coins and a "Maiden/Mother/Crone) plague to Lacey for her b-day (Damn that www.galeforce.com, catalog for having to many things I want)

From the setup to the teardown.. a good faire.
Kennoch's The album Vol 3 & 4

I've finished number 3 and trying to put the final touches on number 4, with 5, 6, and 7 in various stages. Still to come up with better names and cover designs for both 3 & 4.

Spanked by the Kennochs, or Time for Shennigans, is the titles for 3.. 4 is "Under the Leine", but may get the title I don't use.
Cover ideas are "Spanked" being someone bareing a butt and us using red body paint to put a red hand print on the exposed buttocks, the "Shennanigans" one is just showing a bunch of our batas lieing in a pile, or perhaps getting an appropiate gypsy to a pic taken of getting a beat down. "Leinie" is simple, I want someone to do the Marlyn Monroe pose wearing their leine, I was hoping rob or some other appropiate Irish man, Ali might work too.

What is the name our women go under now as number 5 is tentaivley titled "Unfortunate Women" The cover could be number of ideas.. 1) A beheaded woman ala Placerville 2) Tons of Cleevage, or the shot we have from FCC with the overveiw shot of all our women folk

I will be at Southern Faire this weekend and possibly a weekend or so more. I hope some of you guys will try to get out. Gatelisting sucks though. St. Michael's can't really gatelist anyone and the phantom pikeline doesn't exist anymore. It's pay or comp your way in. So, if you're going ... be prepared. Once you arte in, they can find you passes for day two ... its' day one that's tricky.

Fresno Bee article on the Myth Busters at Visalia

http://www.fresnobee.com/local/sv/story/10369077p-11172327c.html

VISALIA -- The cameras were rolling and the archers were ready, but no one was able to split the arrow Saturday at the 16th annual Tulare County Renaissance Festival.

A production crew from "MythBusters," a weekly Discovery Channel show billed as a science-based general entertainment program, was on hand at Plaza Park. Earlier in the week, the show's staff challenged archers to replicate a scene from an Errol Flynn movie, in which Robin Hood splits an arrow.

"The myth we are doing right now is 'Robin-Hooding' an arrow, where an arrow is split completely by another arrow," said assistant producer John Hunt. "We've tried to replicate the shot in our studio for a week. Now we are hoping these archers will have more luck."

The "MythBusters" crew had high-speed cameras rolling as more than a dozen archers, in Renaissance fair clothing and using various styles of long bows, unleashed more than a hundred shots at the target. Though there were a few close calls, no one split an arrow. It is a shot that regulars at Renaissance fairs likened to a golfer's hitting a hole-in-one.

"I've only split one arrow in 30 years of archery," said Travis Fletcher, master of the St. Sebastian's archers guild, a group of 140 archers that travel to Renaissance fairs across the state.

Fletcher said he had researched the "split arrow" myth and believes the feat could have been done, but adds that myth could have been come from a bad translation of historical accounts.

Fletcher said the story reads: "Twice he loosed an arrow, twice he slist the wand."

"That phrase, 'slisting the wand,' means an arrow that comes very close to a vertical target. I doubt that Robin Hood ever split an arrow. I think it's more likely that Robin Hood 'slisted' an arrow," Fletcher said.

The MythBusters crew was just one of the attractions at the festival, which was expected to draw more than 10,000 people total Saturday and today. William Rontani, or William Puddlemaker as he refers to himself at fairs, said the Renaissance fair circuit is growing as more people realize how much fun they can be.

"We are seeing more fairs than ever before. Most of them, like this one, benefit a nonprofit organization, so it gives you a good feeling to participate," Rontani said.

The Plaza Park festival will benefit youth sports in Visalia. Proceeds also will be used for improvements in the park, said Ed Jost, a recreation manager for Visalia.

Bad ideas for Visalia Faire

Every person has bad ideas. They're the ideas that make you go "Hmm. Yes, that would be fun. That would make a good story. That would probably end very, very badly." One such of these ideas was my purchasing a bar for my house. Another was International Lush Day.

In the last 7 days, I've had two of them.

The first is mostly a GOOD idea. I bought a video camera. I'll be able to film battles at faire, various places I see traveling, and friends weddings and such. This is good.
There will be video footage of what happens at my parties.
This is bad. This is very, very bad.

The second is my gift to St. Kennochs, and to the people whose birthday I'm missing. Its a keg of Guinness for Visalia faire.

Now what happens when you combine a video camera and Kennochs at faire with a keg of Guinness and the usual amount of scotch?

I guess, for once, we'll know for certain, when we recover and watch the footage. Good or bad, for once we won't need to rely on our faulty memory as to who was doing naked shots...
