Merhabalar, I'm new to the group, just saying hello. I wondered what instruments/type of music you all play? I think I see a couple of neyzens from the ney tribe here---Anyway, I play ney and baglama, and play turku, sanat music and ilahi, down in the Tucson area in an ensemble.
Hope to hear from you!
Hope to hear from you!

Re: What do you play?
Sat, June 3, 2006 - 2:27 PMI play dumbek, tar and riqq, percussion-wise. My true passion is the kaval (Macedonian, Bulgarian, Albanian and Turkish), and I also play some baglama saz, gaida, bouzouki, octave mandolin and accordion. I own a zurna, but I think I am going to have to evove a third lung before I ever get any good at it. Going to Turkey in July and August ... I'll probably have to abandon my luggage on the trip home to accomodate all of the instruments that I hope to buy in Istanbul! -

Re: What do you play?
Sun, June 11, 2006 - 8:12 AMHey Geoff, you're quite an instrumentalist! I have three kavals, but know I'm approaching them incorrectly (playing them like neys). Do you know of any good method books/websites for guidance? A big question, but how does the ornamentation differ between the Balkan and the Turkish styles? Thanks. And hey, with all those instruments, are you in a group?

Re: What do you play?
Sat, June 3, 2006 - 6:28 PMSo many percussionists! Great to hear from you! And I feel for you ,Geoff--our sazci is in Istanbul right now loading up on instruments to be hauled back, somehow. If only kanun were cheaper...
We have a doumbek and a bendir player, but they are very new to the world of drumming---I'd love for them to get some insights into the finer points of Turkish percussion. One has recently gone to Turkey for two months, and hopefully will get some instruction. Do you know of any teachers in the Arizona area, or barring that, any instructive videos-dvd's? THey can be in Turkish, we got that covered---
Since I mostly learned the art music, you guys can also help me out-- are the usullar the same in halk music as they are in sanat music? Or are there different 7/8, 9/8 and 10/8 rhythm structures, as in Arabic music? (I have little knowledge there, except to be frustrated by the similar name but different makam situation!)
Sag ol

Re: What do you play?
Thu, July 20, 2006 - 1:26 PMHi! I play the dumbek/darbuka, bodhran/tar, cello, and violin/fiddle. I'd love to learn to play the rebaba, or turkish stick fiddle, or whatever you want to call it. I can buy one (for a price) online, but I don't have anyone to show me how. (If there's anyone in the Nashville area that plays, I can't find them.)
I'm in a fledgling ME music ensemble called Tribe Jawahir, (with two singers, a violinist/vocalist, and a guitar player/vocalist) and we're learning some turkish songs (mostly stuff Turku has recorded) with lyrics, and some other fun things.
I also play SCA!

Re: What do you play?
Fri, December 14, 2007 - 10:13 AMKaval is a beautiful instrument, but you can still play sax with Middle Eastern music. There is plenty of opportunity for improvisation in Middle Eastern music can rock out with the sax.
Check out the recording Gypsy Fire release featuring Richard Hagopian and Yuri Yunakov. Yuri plays alto sax. He is Bulgarian. And he rocks.
Middle Eastern music does not have to be played on Middle Eastern instruments. I have tons of soundfiles of non-western people playing flute on Uskudara, guitar on Fire Dance, electric guitar on Enta Omri, trumpet on Rumeli Karsilamasi and Hossam Ramzy's Al Ataba Ghazzaz. George Abdo used an oboe player on many of his recordings.
I have several of these songs scored for E flat instruments on www.dorku.com.

Wed, November 28, 2007 - 8:22 PMI've been a member of this tribe for a while but I missed this thread until just now with Halil's post (welcome). I play darbuka, riqq, frame drum and I've been learning baglama. I just bought an oud and plan on starting lessons in a few months.

Re: What do you play?
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 6:40 AMI've been a percussionist since I was 21, playing tabla, darbuka, dholla, different frames, a bit of riq.
However my passion is really strings. I've played guitar since I was 14. I've played some violin and viola, but need more practice with both. I bought a baglama saz two years ago and have been neglecting my poor guitars...I must have played saz in a past life!
I am learning ney and mizmar.
I have a Middle-eastern fusion band called Kara Nomadica here in the Front Range of Colorado. We play a variety of Turkish, Arabic, and Persian songs as well as a plethora of original material.
It is wonderful to see so many non-Middle-eastern people playing these instruments and music!

Re: What do you play?
Sat, March 29, 2008 - 4:04 AMHi, I'm learning zurna, have got three (kaba, orta, and the little Re zurna) but haven't got the knack of circular breathing yet. Also play kaval.
Any other Turkish musicians in the UK? It's awfully lonely being the only one, particularly when you play zurna :-) -
-
Re: What do you play?
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 8:00 AMPlay your zurna on top of your house in the middle of the night.
This will not only attract good musicians, but it will deter riff-raff from bothering you. ; )

Re: What do you play?
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 8:32 PM"play" might be a bit of a stretch in my case, but perhaps it would be honest to say that I'm learning to play Anatolian/Balkan music (vague, I know) on guitar, baglama saz, greek bouzouki and doumbek. I played with Gaiananda in Cincinnati for a few years and really enjoyed learning to entrain with dancers.

Re: What do you play?
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 1:00 PMGreetings everyone,
My name is Shan Ahmadi and I originally played electric bass in a few punk/metal bands until I got into world music, Middle Eastern music in particular. I play the Persian santour after I found a teacher in the Orange County area. I also have fun playing the doumbek, frame drums, & tupan. I have a set of Spanish bagpipes (gaita) that I play a few early music tunes on. BUT, my favorite instrument that I've always wanted to play is the ney. Just acquired it not long ago and learned to make a steady sound in a week. I'd like to get better at it and have found a few instructional sources. Would like to attend the MEMDC in Mendocina this summer to learn from quality instructors.
