The choreography my teacher taught my group last term contained a series of hip bumps, which ended with us making a hip bump at the same time as we clenched our fists and brought them towards each other at hip height stopping at about 2-3 inches apart. My teacher said that we could think of it as putting a knife into a sheath at the side of the "bumping" hip.
My teacher is Turkish but has told us that we will focus mostly on basic steps since we are a beginner's group and so she hasn't really explained the move, and I keep forgetting to ask her. Does anyone here know if the move means anything, if it's a very "Turkish" move etc.? It certainly doesn't look like anything Egyptian as far as I can tell...
(First post here, pardon my bad English!)

Re: Anyone knows this move?
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 7:59 PMI'm not really sure what move you're describing. There are some Romani gestures in Turkish romani dance that involve hitting the hip lightly with a closed fist, or hitting closed fists together. I'm assuming this is something similar? If this is a Romani gesture it may not have a specific meaning. Some of them do, but Artemis has told us before that most of them don't mean anything in particular. -

Re: Anyone knows this move?
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 10:53 AMAriel: Yes, I realized that I wasn't too clear in my description, but it is a move similar to hitting closed fist together only the fists don't touch each other (or the hip). Ok, so it would be more like an "ornament" to the dance then?
Shamsi: Actually we weren't dancing to a Karshlimar, just a regular 4/4-beat song. But I'll keep that information in mind. :) I'm actually planning on ordering her dvd as soon as I have the money to do so, and also some of her manuscripts as well. Her website is great, I haven't really found any other that can compare.

Re: Anyone knows this move?
Thu, February 14, 2008 - 8:07 AMYes - it's a Rom gesture - very common. You don't want to do it all the time, but if you're dancing to any Karshlimar, particularly a Rom 9 (which drops the 9th beat) then you'll use it on the first two Doums, Doum tek ka Doum tek ka Doum tek ka Doum tek ____. Look up www.serpentine.org - Elizabeth Artemis Mourat does a lot of historical study and traveling specifically with Turkish and Romany dance. Great resource. -

Re: Anyone knows this move?
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 9:01 PMIt sounds like a move that Artemis Mourat does on one of her dvds which she calls "extension chord" She says that these types of moves are meant as accents and don't mean anything the way that certain hand gestures in other dance forms such as bharatnatyam do.
Turkish is so fun and I would love to learn more! -

Re: Anyone knows this move?
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 9:05 PMWhat I meant was that it sounds similar to the "extension chord" . I haven't seen the move you describe but like all the accents in turkish they delight me! As in turkish delight!
