I believe the name you need is "Emre YILDIRIM". You can contact him through whirlingdervis@hotmail.com.

Todd: Sema dance is performed by males. As Parvez said, it is a dance traditionally performed by dervishes. I respect Shamsi but I doubt her dancing talents would be of much use in this case.

Well, glad you could help, Al.

Shamsi is well known, of course, or you wouldn't know her. She can find folks to help Parvez, if he needs it.

Hey Todd, thanks for the support - I'm not sure where Parvez is, but depending on his exact needs, there are several groups across the country who do this. Should you need more info, you can totally feel free to PM me.

My Order - the Dunyavi Sufi order does allow women to whirl, as a matter of fact, most of us are women, which is not always the case in more "Traditional" orders, although ours is decended from the Mevlevi, which is strictly traditional.

Just as an aside, I think people misunderstand the word, but Dervish comes from the root word "Dar" meaning "Door" or "Opening"....those of us who are Dervishes stand on the threshold to guide people back and forth....

Although we do not perform as a dance troupe for any body who is interested here's some info :

Dervish turning from the Mevlevi Order of dervishes has been taught and practised in West London since 1963. This is one of the few places in the world where this profound technique is taught in its original form. The turning is practised by both men and women and is open to people of all races, creeds and backgrounds.

          As Rumi wrote:
" Come, come whoever you are.
An unbeliever, a fire worshipper, come.
Our covenment is not one of desperation.
Even if you have broken your vows a hundred times
          Come, come again.

These ceremonies are open to the public on the first friday of the month.
