Heading to Israel in May...technical questions

Hi...
I'm heading to Israel in May. I have some techincal questions and maybe some of you wonderful drummers might be able to steer me in the right direction. I am planning on taking a hand-held Digital Recorder. Does anyone have any suggestions? The one that I am looking at is the M-Audio Micro Track II Portable Digital Recorder.

With ideas bouncing around in my brain, there are some basic tools that I am going to need to take with me.They need to be fit easily into a carry-on. If I can figure out the nuts and bolts of blogging, posting pics and video, podcasting, etc, to be done while on the road, I plan on completely documenting as much of the trip as I find reasonable.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or introductions to friends and musical contacts? Please email me directly through tribe or at drumfest@yahoo.com.

Shalom...Daveed

I am going to Israel in May for two-weeks. Since last fall I have been working with two classes of fourth graders: one is located in Columbia MD and the other is in the Central Arava region of south-central Israel. They have been collaborating together as part of a story-creating, storyboarding and storytelling project that builds on descriptive & narrative writing exercises that targets their visual interpretation skills. Just another way of integrating the arts to teach core classroom curriculum.

No trip would be complete without a heavy dose of drumming. I'm taking one drum: a 20" Cooperman bodhran. So as not to miss out on an opportunity I am planning on taking a hand held Digital Recorder. The one that I am looking at is the M-Audio Micro Track II Portable Digital Recorder.

The possibilities are boundless. This is fun!!!

More to come...

x-post: Folkloric Dance Show at Pennsic

This is an early notice as we're still waiting on schedule confirmation -
We're looking for performers!

Sadika al Masri and I would like to host a "Folkloric Dance Show" at Pennsic this year (in the Ampitheatre or Performing Arts Tent). Our hope is to stimulate more interest in historic representations of dance.

We're hoping that in addition to traditional Middle Eastern folkloric dances like Tunisian, Debke, Oulid Nail, Ghawazee, Tahktib, there’ll also be performers from other cultures - Japanese, Indian, Central Asian, etc.

True to the SCA ideal, a “reasonable attempt” at authentic re-creation (of garb, persona, and dance style) is expected; documentation is encouraged but not required. We WOULD like written background information on the performance so we can read it before your performance.

We're not authenticity police--modern renditions of folkloric dance is OK--we know documenting dance in period is not easy so we are relaxed about this. We're just looking for a "reasonable attempt" -

So, if you're interested in doing a performance of staged ethnic/folkloric dance from ANY non-European culture, in close approximation of SCA-period garb and style, to live OR recorded music, please contact me here or at
anthea at kawakib.com

*If you have any contact info for other cultural groups I'd appreciate it!*

I just downloaded Nomads of the Silk Road off of amazon and one of the tracks seems to have a serious dump cut. Rumelaj, which is one of my favorite songs, is only 2:39 and it just ends mid-phrase. Any thoughts on this? Does anyone have the full version and how long is it actually supposed to be?

Thanks,

I've just created a new home page for TurkuGuide.com, our site of information about Istanbul. I've been really inspired as I have been learning about aging photographs with photoshop. I wanted to put old postcards on the page, but didn't want to take them off the web. So, I used a photo of my daughter, a friend, and a pic I took in the Harem at Topkapi Palace and aged them.
I hope you'll check it out.
www.turkuguide.com/
If you've ever had a thought about going to Istanbul, you should read it. Also, looking at one of the flight booking sites the other day, I was seeing fares around $600 from the east coast.

So what would it take for there to be a re-release of Turku Live 1999 as a DVD?
It was such a great video, and influenced so many people. That, and your CD's turned so many artists on to Turkish village music.
I think it is time to turn a whole new wave of musicians and dancers on to Turku.
What do you say????

Not everyone knows that Turku's violinist Farzad plays many different instruments. In fact, he came to us a drummer, and it was some time before we even found out that he played anything else. When we first heard him, our jaws dropped. We figured we'd find another drummer, but we knew we'd never find another violinist that good.
Farzad has just released his 3rd solo cd, Rubicon. He plays every instrument on every track, drums, synth, vioin, ud, Lord knows what else...
You can check it out at http://www.farzadweb.com/rubicon.htm

There will not be enough members of Turku at Pennsic this year for us to stage a concert. We sure miss that party; it's always a blast for us.
I will be there, tho, and I would be glad to work with any dancers on this tribe who would like some help with zil or improvisation. Just flag me down at pennsic, and we'll find some time. (I work better with individuals than classes on these subjects)
See you there!

3 days before we leave for Istanbul and Ankara, we realize that the Turkey travel pages on the Turku site have just gotten way too big. So, we're ready to turn it into a serious resource for travellers. We just launched TurkuGuide.com. You can find our travel blog, complete with video there, as well as all kind of info on Turkey geared toward the lover of Turkish culture. We'd like to invite your questions, which we'll post on the site. So...off we go to gather info and video about Istanbul and Ankara. Our friend Laura (Miss Fancy on tribe.net) will be joining us and blogging on her tribe page.

For those of you that knew and loved Amira (aka Victoria Bedford) she passed away Tuesday night of brain cancer.
For those of you that didn't know her, she was a sweet and loving person that always shared what little she had.
She camped with us at Orluk Oasis for many years, but I met her in Charlotte in the early 90's. She was dancing at a restaurant there and we hit it right off. She was right there in the middle of the first wave of belly dance in America and knew so much. I was a fledgling dancer doing my own thing with drum circles in the woods. She taught me more about professional dancing and I introduced her to the pennsic style dance party. "When do I get to dance", she asked? and I laughed and told her "now!"
Love you Amira.

what are the chances of the folks from Turku coming up to town a little early and agreeing to a small house concert to help raise a little extra $?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_concert

at my studio. we can get about 20-25 seats in w/ couches and whatnot. afterwards, we could move the chairs and have a good old fashioned hafla!

and

if you guys are interested, I can help set up private or small classes/workshops the few musicians in the DC area who have already expressed an interest.

I'm leading the annual pennsic guedra on the first thursday. here is the text from the book...
Subject(s): Dance Middle Eastern
Guedra-North African Trance Dance
Kharajin of Turku
Dance with chants. No dance experience necessary. 2-4 dancers inside a
circle of chanters. You don't have to do the dance, but you do have to
chant. About 1/2hour instruction, then any men present will be excused
while we perform the dance til exhaustion. Bring water and a veil.
8/2, 8pm at Middle-Eastern Tent
(We like to start at 8pm so everyone can see the instruction, but we have the privacy of dark thereafter. If you have already heard my Guedra babble, there is no need to show up till about 8:30.)
hope to see all you ladies there!

After DID, I let my brother in law take my saz home w/ him (he's more musically able than I am, and he *loved* Ted's class). But, if Ted is teaching at Pennsic, I will buy another saz from Shek/ Touch the Earth. :)

Ted has a good professional quality yaprak long-neck saz that he recently purchased in Istanbul so that he could take lessons while he was there. He brought it home and is selling it for $350. pics are posted. It has a nice, rich satin finish to the wood, rather than the glossy, polyurethane-y looking finish you usually see.

I got so much satisfaction out of creating the zil technique cd that I'm feeling ready to tackle the larger challenge of creating a cd called "Ecstatic Dance". It's geared towards belly dancers that really want joyous improvisation without thought, perfect expression, and the great buzz you can only get from riding the music.
I'd like to hear from dancers that have questions they want answered on the subject, or opinions on what they'd like to see addressed. I really enjoy helping dancers get past obsticles in their path. This will help me cover all the bases on the new cd. Thanx!
As this project progresses, I'll be posting updates on TurkuMusic.com

Daveed at Tribal Revolution in Chicago!!

Blue Lotus Tribe is bringing back Chicago's first major tribal bellydance event....in the form of a three day festival!!

...AND WE'RE BRINGING DAVEED!

Daveed will be teaching beginning and intermediate Middle-Eastern Drumming as well as performing in our gala Show!

Tribal Revolution will take place June 23-25, 2006 at the Purple Hotel in Lincolnwood, IL (Just North of Chicago, right off of I-94). All of the activities will be held at the hotel, including:

Dance classes by Kami Liddle, Zafira Dance Company, and Blue Lotus Tribe
Finger cymbal and rhythm for dancers classes by Karim Nagi (Turbo Tabla)
Drum classes by Daveed Korup
Friday night hafla with dinner, performances, and open dancing DJ'd by Karim Nagi in the hotel's restaurant
Saturday lunch catered by the hotel
Saturday gala show starring our teachers and other talented Midwestern tribal dancers
Double the vendors from last year

And of course, you can stay at the hotel, making everything very convenient. The hotel is close to several restaurants, a Starbucks (oh yeah... we checked), and shopping (including a fabric store if there are any last-minute costume issues).

Check out the www.TribalRevolution.com for all the details and to register. (registration begins March 1)

What's the translation of the name of this song, and if it exists, the "story" it tells?

We're planning to use it at a dance performance, and I'm curious. Before somebody yawns and tells me that this is not an original music choice - it's a Classic! (The Stones played Satisfaction at the Superbowl, and I loved that song, every little bit as much as I did 20 years ago. Some songs just rock, and withstand repeated listening.)

Hey Thanks Emyrs!

I tried to make one of these several months ago, but had trouble because someone else had already made one. There is, or was, a completely inactive Turku tribe on tribe.net with only the creator as a member.

Anyways, thanks Emyrs for doing this and sending all the pics!
