Gypsy Dance Theatre at TRF...

Glad to report that Gypsy Dance Theatre will once again have the pleasure of performing at Texas Renaissance Festival. This will be our eighth year as a troupe, and my own 29th year performing professionally at TRF. Yikes, how time flies...but it sure has been fun!

This year will be unique for GDT, as our master drummer, acrobat, and dancer Terrence Karn has moved out of state to accompany his wife Julie Fox as she pursues her MFA in dance at Ohio State. Glad to report that Taras already has a great job in the dance department at Denison College...but we will miss him mightily. It certainly takes more than one man to replace the likes of Terracio, so this year I will be joined in the band by David Anderson and Aaron Hermes. Hope you like our new sound.

In addition to our original core dancers, Farasha, Kira, Alla, Soraya, and Kareena, we will be introducing a new GDT performer this year. The lovely Katia is the new "baby" in our troupe and we all look forward to incorporating her into our group choreographies, and watching her own solos shine. We also have some special guests lined up included Pangea Beat, Danmar School of Dance and HABDA.

Finally, after all these years we have produced our first music CD. Entitled "Gypsy Breakfast," it includes Turkish clarinet, Indian bansouri, sitar, a fabulous violinist, vocals, Alla's flying feet, and a world of percussion. So I hope to offer you will have a taste of Gypsy Breakfast sometime soon.

See you at the Faire... Opa! Tulo (Ken Knezick)

So very glad to hear you will be back at TRF this year. Your troupe was probably the main reason I started bellydancing.... Like every year, I look forward to seeing you all perform!

I am glad that you will be there. My heart dropped when I heard otherwise. After all, what would Doc, Benny and the other drummers do without you guys there?

Thanks for the kind words Ms. M!!

First weekend is always a challenge, as we pull the strands together again. All in all though I was quite pleased, especially about our new violin player, Tsura. She will be with us most Saturdays (though not this 2nd weekend of Faire as she is performing at a Celtic Festival in Louisiana). But check her out...Tsura is an excellent player enabling us to take our sound in new directions.

No violin this weekend...no worries. Even without Taras, we've got our GDT "Thunder Drum" section tuned way up. Aaron and David rock! Extra special treat having Maestro Jay Kruse stop by to play some serious bass drum with us. You may also catch Jay at the Tartanic shows. Hopefully will get him to teach a few Sirrom Drum Class sessions while he is here in town.

Adding to the fun, GDT presents a new young dancer in Katia. She is now the "baby" in our group, much to Alla's dismay. But it has long been one of my passions to give new talent an opportunity to blossom. We developed a new song (Lorena McKennett's Marco Polo) and a completely new routine to introduce her. I believe that Katia will make the most of her opportunity to fly with the Gypsies.

        See you there... Opa, Tulo

On Sunday, Oct. 14 at our 1:30 show, GDT's Colombian queen Soraya was surprised on stage with a wedding proposal from her boyfriend Sina upon bended knee. Soraya made hundreds of men sad that afternoon, but Sina a very happy and fortunate man when she accepted his proposal and an awesome engagement ring.

Soraya and Sina certainly are a beautiful couple and we all wish them the best!

Gypsy Dance Theatre had extended an invitation to HABDA members to perform this weekend. I was very lucky and got to dance yesterday at the 11:30 show. What a delight!! It was a beautiful day and Tulo and Jay's percussion plus zills and violin were the perfect mix for a wonderful dance.

As always, Ren Fest is the ultimate people-watching experience. The weather was great, the food was good, the wine -- very smooth, and on and on. A wonderful day.
