Don't miss it! We've been working long and hard (and somewhat frantically) to put this together. Believe me, you've never seen anythign like...

Kelly McCubbin’s Golden Hour of Radio
What year is this? Local cult performer, Kelly McCubbin, seems unsure as he and his group of drunks, misfits, and malcontents struggle to put on a live Science Fiction Radio Show.
From the creator of "Uke-y Stardust" and "Purple Rain - When Ukes Cry" comes this loving and hysterical tribute to Golden Age Radio, but with a modern edge. Chaos, comedy, music, and a brand-new science fiction radio drama will overtake the Exit Theatre August 1, 2, 8 and 9 at 8 P.M..
Beware the Cognizance Reaction!!!
Tickets - $15. $10 for students, seniors, and TBA members. For tickets call Brown Paper Tickets at 1-800-838-3006 or ONLINE TICKETS http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/36181

Five Cent Coffee CD Release Party, Whoo!!!

Hey kids! If'n you haven't been hit with the info yet, here it is... I am so honored to be opening for 5 Cent Coffee and a bunch of other fine musicians at their CD release Party on February 9th!
"Bourbon and Beans" it's called and, mark my words, it is the album by which all others will soon be judged. Philharmonics will lay down their instruments on masse rather than face their inadequacy compared to this masterpiece! Blonde on Blonde? Bah! Electric Ladyland? Blech! Sergeant Pepper?! Pathetic. In fact, here's what you do, you come out to the show and say, "Hey!" and enjoy some music and pick up a copy. THEN you go home and put it in your CD player, and here's the brilliant part, you superglue that motherfucker shut because you won't need any other records after you've got a copy of "Bourbon and Beans", baby!

Here's the skinny...

That's right...our debut album Bourbon and Beans is finally ready!!

Come on down and get your copy on Saturday February 9th or, if you can't stand waiting that long, you can purchase a copy online from our website: www.fivecentcoffee.com

Duck on Bike, our extraordinary manager has set up an all star party in San Francisco at the fabulous Plough and Stars on Clement St, and we're thrilled to be sharing the stage with some of the people who have helped us along these past two years -- the ukulele and jug band community in the Bay Area is hands down, the most friendly and warm bunch of people on the planet. It is these sort of folks who we drew on to perform last year's "Everything' a Dollar in this Box - The Songs of Tom Waits on Cheap Instruments" -- the show turned out to be a hit, and we can thank our musical community of friends for that. From "Uke-y Stardust" to the SF Jugband Festival, we've been lucky enough to be included on the bill with such local luminaries as Tippy Canoe, the Uke Apocalypse, Dogs in Doublets, Hobohemian's Boxcar Band, Just Henry, Liquor Cake, Amy Zing and The Goat Family. So we've asked them to come out and play a few tunes for us! Woohoo!

We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your support and hope you'll join us in celebrating our CD release! (We're going to put the party back in "CD Release Party")!

Here's how it will go down: We'll have an all star opening set and then... drum roll please....

5 Cent Coffee will the play the entire (soon to be legendary) album "Bourbon and Beans" from start to finish on ukulele!

Ohhhh! Ahhhh!

The All-star opening set features:
Dan Briggs' Dogs in Doublets
Liquor Cake
Amy Zing
Just Henry
Hobohemian's Boxcar Band
Tippy Canoe
Kelly McCubbin, (The Uke Apocalypse)
The Goat Family

LIVE @
The Plough and Stars
116 Clement st.
San Francisco, CA

Saturday February 9th

Am I the only one noting with a tinge of melancholy the passing of Dan Fogelberg? I understand that he was definitely on the soft-side of the 1970s singer-songwriter era, but, hey, the guy played a lot of instruments and wrote a lot of, what I think is good, music...

I'm trying to find some new music (i.e. music that I have not heard before and/or listened to in a long time, that I have forgot about). So, can you good people please tell me what five cds are on your cd turntable that you are listening to now or what are the five most recent cds you have listened to? And what are five brand spanking new groups and/or indiviuduals that you have listened to/discovered?

And what radio stations is everyone listening to? I'm kind of stuck with KFOG right now, which I like, but doesn't have as much new stuff as I would like.

Thanks.

"'....Ryder Thorn. He was at Candlebrow. At the ukulele workshop that summer. He lectured on the four-note chord in the context of timelessness, and described himself then as a Quaternionist. We had quickly discovered our common love of the instrument,' Miles recalled, 'and discussed the widespread contempt in which ukelele players are held -- traceable, we concluded, to the uke's all-but-exclusive employment as a producer of chords -- single, timeless events apprehended all at once instead of serially. Notes of a linear melody, up and down a staff, being a record of pitch versus time, to play a melody is to introduce the element of time, and hence of mortality. Our perceived reluctance to leave the timelessness of the struck chord has earned ukulele players our reputation as feckless, clownlike children who will not grow up.'

"'Never thought of it like that,' said Chick, 'all I know is, is it sure sounds better than when we sing a cappella.'"

I only just heard about it, but apparently some band has put together a night of Dark Side of the Moon played entirely on Ukulele.

One wonders whether "Wizard of Oz" will be projected on the wall at the same time.

Uke-y Stardust - The Final Chapter

Yes, my friends, we come to the end of an era... the very last ever performance of "Uke-y Stardust". It's been a time, but on June 16th at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco (http://www.rickshawstop.com/) we kill the fucker dead, for good.

This show is gonna be something else. We've stuck a full set of OTHER David Bowie material on the beginning, spanning his whole career and then we close the show with his glam rock masterpiece, "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" from beginning to end. Even if you've seen it before, there are new bands, new arrangements, new costumes, new simulated sex acts, new instruments... It ain't your momma's Ziggy. (Though in a way it's like your grandma's, except for the whole... nevermind.)

All of it on ukulele.

For the very last time.

He's having a bad go of it lately and we want to put an end the troubles with an evening of some of the finer local music you're gonna be able to see all stacked up like this. It's a win-win kinda deal, you see?
Social Networking’s Next Phase

By BRAD STONE

Published: March 3, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO, March 2 — Next week Cisco Systems, a Silicon Valley heavyweight, plans to announce one of its most unusual deals: it is buying the technology assets of Tribe.net, a mostly forgotten social networking site, according to people close to the companies’ discussions.

It is a curious pairing. Cisco, with 38,000 employees, makes networking equipment for telecommunications providers and other big companies. Tribe.net, run by a company with eight employees, has been trampled by newer social sites like MySpace and Facebook.

But along with the recent purchase of a social network design firm, Five Across, the deal will give Cisco the technology to help large corporate clients create services resembling MySpace or YouTube to bring their customers together online. And that ambition highlights a significant shift in the way companies and entrepreneurs are thinking about social networks.

They look at MySpace and Facebook, with their tens of millions of users, as walled-off destinations, similar to first-generation online services like America Online, CompuServe and Prodigy. These big Web sites attract masses of people who have dissimilar interests and, ultimately, little in common.

The new social networking players, which include Cisco and a multitude of start-ups like Ning, the latest venture of the Netscape co-creator Marc Andreessen, say that social networks will soon be as ubiquitous as regular Web sites. They are aiming to create tools to let ordinary people, large companies and even presidential candidates create social Web sites tailored for their own customers, friends, fans and employees.

“The existing social networks are fantastic but they put users in a straitjacket,” said Mr. Andreessen, who this week reintroduced Ning, his third start-up, after a limited introduction last year. “They are restrictive about what you can and can’t do, and they were not built to be flexible. They do not let people build and design their own worlds, which is the nature of what people want to do online.”

Social networks are sprouting on the Internet these days like wild mushrooms. In the last few months, organizations as dissimilar as the Portland Trailblazers, the University of South Carolina and Nike have gotten their own social Web sites up and running, with the help of companies that specialize in building social networks. Last month, Senator Barack Obama unveiled My.BarackObama.com, a social network created for his presidential campaign by the political consulting firm Blue State Digital.

Many of these new online communities cater to niche interests. Shelfari, a Seattle-based start-up, recently began a service to let book lovers share their opinions. This week it received an investment from Amazon.com.

Mr. Andreessen’s Ning, based in Palo Alto, Calif., is fashioning itself as a one-stop shop catering to this growing interest in social networks. Anyone can visit the site and set up a community on any topic, from the television show “Battlestar Galactica” to microbrew beers. Ning users choose the features they want to include, like videos, photos, discussion forums or blogs. Their sites can appear like MySpace, YouTube or the photo sharing site Flickr — or something singular.

Those setting up Ning communities can pay $20 a month if they want the site free of text advertisements delivered by Google. They also have the option of delivering their own advertising, as CBS does on Ning-based social networks for its shows “CSI” and “The Class.”

Mr. Andreessen said that even with its two acquisitions, Cisco might be underestimating the ease of combining technologies behind Tribe.net and its earlier acquisition, Five Across.

“The idea that Cisco is going to be a force in social networking is about as plausible as Ning being a force in optical switches,” he said.

Tribe.net, which developed the technology that Cisco is now acquiring, almost led this new social networking phase. In 2004, the U2 singer Bono approached the company and asked it to create a separate network for his antipoverty campaign, One.org, according to several former employees. Tribe.net, founded by Mark Pincus, a prominent Silicon Valley angel investor, decided to remain focused on building a destination site, like Friendster and MySpace.

Bono went on to create the One.org network with Yahoo. Mr. Pincus left Tribe.net in 2005 but repurchased the company from lenders last summer when it was nearly out of money. Today, Tribe.net is primarily used by artists who attend the annual Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert.

Executives at Cisco and Utah Street Networks, Tribe.net’s parent company, declined to comment on their deal or its terms. But people close to the discussions said Tribe.net would remain an independent site, while its underlying technology would go to Cisco.

Several former employees have left Tribe.net to start their own firms offering social network tools. Alex Muldoven, who had been a product manager there, started a company called Crowd Factory to design social networks for large companies. He is now building services for several telecommunications customers and says the new model makes more sense for Internet users.

“If I’m into fly-fishing, that is where I’m going to spend my energy online,” he said. “I don’t think it is easy for MySpace and Facebook to adapt and bend to the needs of individual brands.”

One challenge is getting users to join new social networks when there are few other members. For example, Google helped Nike design its soccer community site, called Joga.com, but it does not appear to have significantly attracted users.

“I think this will work for certain kinds of brands, and other brands are just barking up the wrong tree,” said Paul Martino, a former Tribe.net chief technology officer who is now the chief executive of Aggregate Knowledge, a service that taps the online behavior of other users to provide shopping advice.

Another challenge is persuading users to enter their information over and over when they join new online communities. To solve the problem, several firms are pushing a standard called OpenID, which would let users sign on and easily transfer profile information among social sites.

Marc Canter, a former Tribe.net consultant who has created his own social networking firm, People Aggregator, was an early supporter of OpenID. “Humans are migratory beasts, and we do not want to re-enter our data every time we join a new site,” he said. “Users own their data and should be able to move it around freely.”

Cisco is positioning itself for the day when mainstream consumers are spending much of their time taking part in these online communities. With the acquisition of Tribe.net, it is also trying to further its quest to become a consumer-oriented company. In the last few years, it has purchased the wireless router company Linksys and the set-top-box maker Scientific Atlanta, giving it a significant presence in many American homes.

Dan Scheinman, the mergers and acquisition chief who led the Linksys and Scientific Atlanta purchases, now runs a new division at Cisco called the Media Solutions Group, which has been responsible for the deals for Five Across and Tribe.net.

After the Five Across acquisition, Mr. Scheinman said in an interview that Americans were quickly changing their media consumption habits. He said his new group would let Cisco help its media customers, like TV networks and cable companies, develop their sites and move more of their content onto the Web.

“Part of our job is to form a relationship with media companies and deliver technologies and services to them, so consumers can consume what they want online,” he said.

Everything's a Dollar in this Box - Tom Waits on Cheap Instruments... Encore!!!

Now I've been awful proud of the big shows we've put on in the last year. And I well up a little thinking about how brilliant the performers were in Uke-y Stardust and Purple Rain - When Ukes Cry. From soup to nuts I am proud that these inspired mad geniuses would work with me.
But this Tom Waits show is the best I've ever been involved in. I could tell you that it was due to the brilliant performances. Or I could say that it was the inspired staging. Or the wonderful audience who were willing to go there with us so completely. Or the many tentacled Jessica who held it all together when it would've unraveled in less expert hands. I could tell you all those things and they would all be partially true. But, frankly, it was just magic. God damned magic.

We're gonna do it again! Two nights! Please come and be with us. Will ya?
And for those of you who didn't get in (and, woah, we're super sorry. That's not a situation that has ever really occurred to any of us before!) and for those of you who want to make SURE to get in, advanced tickets are available this time!
Here's the skinny from the impresarios...

As many of you know, my birthday is on Saturday, January 13th. What you may NOT know is that we're celebrating it in STYLE.
And you are all invited.
Please join me and my friends for a musical salute... to me! We will be at Isotope Comics (www.isotopecomics.com) in San Francisco with quite a few of the usual suspects trotting out orignals, and also a lot of the covers that put us all together in the first place. We'll have sets from Just Henry, Five Cent Coffee, Stella! and will even reform into our Revolutionary Starmen configuration for some Purple Rain and, for the first time in a LONG while, some Uke-y Stardust.
If you take ANY trip down musical memory lane this year, let it be this one! Because it's gonna be the trippiest!

Also, it's free!
Also, there will be booze!
Also, presents are NOT requested or required (though a list of comics that I want will be at the counter in case you can't stop yourself...)

Many of you have probably not experienced my love of droney rock bands or sort of embarassing passion for British folk rock. My old friend Dan has put them together in a way that astonishes me.
I wish I were in thiis band... or that, at least, I had a few grams for to listen to them.

Purple Rain - When Ukes Cry!!!

Here comes! It's getting bigger by the minute!
Let's see some asses wigglin'!

"Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called LIFE...."

The man. The artist. The musican. The guitar. Well, scrap the guitar. Because we will be presenting Prince's classic, groundbreaking album, "Purple Rain," from start to finish, on ukuleles. Lots of ukuleles. More ukuleles than perhaps you've ever seen, or ever will. Sure, there will be some xylophone, saw, washboard and spoons, but really, it's all about the uke.

Featuring 5 Cent Coffee, Stella!, Just Henry, and Kitten on the Keys!

November 9th
The Rickshaw Stop
155 Fell St., SF
9 pm/$10/21+
Dressing up and singing along is not only tolerated, it is welcomed. Put on your eyeliner and frilly shirt, put your hands in the air, and say it with me......... "I Would Die 4 Uke!"

My heavens Amy and I are performing a lot over the next month!
Here's the rundown. I expect you all to wash behind your ears and get out to these shows!

October 23rd, Ireland's 32 in San Francisco - We open for out good friends Plasterkatz who are so freaking terrific it's amazing. Never let them know that I like them that much, though. They'll never let me live it down.

November 3rd, The Make-out Room in San Francisco - It's the Uke-y Stardust all stars! (Which is basically all of us that were in that show.) We all get to participate in Tippy Canoe's "Uke Out Knock-Out" where my plan is to immediately sucker punch the most dangerous opponent in the ring, Doodlz LaRue, and then let the rest of them squabble amongst themselves allowing me to mop up at the end. Lookie! http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/e68/2a5/e682a556-346c-4669-a23c-9c19b133f83e

And then, of course, it's time for "Purple Rain - When Ukes Cry". November 9th, 9:00 P.M. at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco. You don't want to miss this one because I doubt we'll do it more than once and if you'd heard what I've heard already, you'd be giddy with excitement! With Stella!, Five Cent Coffee, Just Henry, Kitten on the Keys and Koz! http://www.ukeapocalypse.com . Go and look at the flyer. Just look and I defy you to not buy an advance ticket! (Which you can get through The Rickshaw Stop www.rickshawstop.com)

Our set with Bono!!!

Ok, I made that up, but it's time to start talking about them gigs what's coming down the pike...

First comes the Knockout Uke-Out at, where else?, The Knockout in S.F.. The acts that brought you Ukey-Stardust are ready to throw down in a no-holds-barred, bare-uked brawl! Featuring Tippy Canoe & the Paddlemen with special guest Dee Spare, Uni & her Ukelele, Just Henry, now, Stella featuring The Uke Apocolyse & Amy Zing, 5 Cent Coffee and Megan Lynch. Where else, I ask you, can you get that much Ukaliciousness for $8?

And then, right after, on November 9th, comes a Purple Dawn...
Ready for this? Many of the same folks from Uke-y Stardust, and a few new very special faces, are returning for another "What the hell were they thinking when they came up with this?" event! "Purple Rain - When Ukes Cry". That's right, the entire album, beginning to end, on ukuleles. We've been secretly working on this for a while and, I can tell you, this is the Everest of uke ambition. And it's sounding sooo good.
And, as an extra special treat, the opening act is... us! The bands in the main show are gonna take a little time before we get doused in the purple spray, to show you what we sound like normally.
Here's the skinny...
November 9th, The Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco.
Purple Rain - When Ukes Cry
featuring Kelly McCubbin, Amy Zing, Five Cent Coffee, Just Henry, Koz and extra special guest... Kitten on the Keys! - $10
Remember "I Would Die 4 Uke!"

I just want to say how MUCH I adore Lynn and Erling. They come to every show they can get to. They buy schwag. These are folks that, believe me, have better things to do with their lives, but when it comes to supporting flea-bitten, rag-tag, musicians like us or 5 Cent Coffee, they put their money where their mouth is.
Everyone should be so lucky to have such friends.
Thanks guys.

First off, I want to tell you that we are PROUD, PROUD, dammit!, to be playing the finest laundry/bar/club in the greater Bay Area, this very Friday! We're playing with our good friends Five Cent Coffee who we ourselves enjoy watching and also have the extra added advantage of making us look borderline sober. Win, win, I say.
There's actually a lot of stuff coming by way of the good graces of my Uke-y Stardust pals and I will tell you this, I owe each and every one of those guys a debt of gratitude that I can never repay for working to make that dream come true.
This leads me to my next point which is that I've revamped my website. It's set up to keep mostly dynamic tabs on all my uke pals and their shows and to allow you to not only see what's coming up, but to be able to see what I have to say about stuff before and after it happens and to chat back with me about it, too.
Anyway, if you guys get an inclination, please go give it a looksee. Play around. See if you can find the events, feel free to post about them, etc.. The data is still being filled in, so you may only see acouple of shows and a handful of artists, but I'm getting them all in there.
Also, if YOU are on one of my pages and you don't like the description or picture I've used, please let me know. I can easily change it.

http://www.ukeapocalypse.com/index.php

Vive la Uke-alution! Down with the six-stringed devil!

Also, keep an eye out for a very special new project that we're starting in on soon... let's just say, "Uke will see the Purple Dawn."

A New Name?

Kelly et al.,
If the name "Uke Apocalypse" was picked because of the "5 years, that's all we got," concept of Ziggy Stardust, would an acceptable new name for a Prince infl/ected concept be "Uke Rain"? I ask, because that's where my grandmother came from... (mind you, I like Uke Apocalypse a lot and I don't expect or want you to change your monniker. I'm just punning around here for no damn good....)

BIRTHDAYS

1895 Cliff "Ukulele Ike" Edwards,
vocal/Ukulele/composer,
b. Hannibal, MO, USA.
d. 1971, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

né Clifford Edwards. Cliff, the son of a poor, non musical farming family, had a career that reached heights higher than the Alps and fell lower than the valleys. During a visit to St. Louis, MO, he heard the then-new Edison cylinder talking machine, and became totally fascinated by the fact that the human voice could be "captured" on wax and heard over and over. He soon began singing the "new" music while performing his farm chores. Inevitably, Cliff gravitated to the world of music, first appearing (1909) in the bars around Hannibal, MO. where the phonograph was an early device to bring in the drinking crowd. In 1910, he began to work in St. Louis, MO. eventually learning to play his 'trademark' instrument, the Ukulele. Working usually without accompaniment, he began to improvise sounds by cupping his hands over his mouth imitating a trumpet (a la The Mills Brothers), and experimented with an early type of "scat" singing. Few people today realize that Cliff Edwards was probably one of the first Jazz singers on record (predating Louis Armstrong) with swinging phrases and heated 'scat' singing. In 1918, he began to work with composer Bob Carleton, and helped make Carleton's song "Ja Da" a big hit. Success came fast and furious in the mid-1920s. He appeared in George Gershwin's Broadway show "Lady Be good" (strumming his way through a version of "Fascinating Rhythm"). He followed that by appearing in the Ziegfeld musical, "Sunny", (he and his ukulele were show stoppers), and he also appeared in several editions of George White's "Scandals." A Chicago waiter with a bad memory once called him "Ike", Cliff liked it, and during a singing and ukulele act at Mike Frizl's Arizona Cafe, first started billing himself as 'Ukulele Ike'. He landed a recording contract, and during the 1920s and early '30s he had one hit after another. "June Night" sold 3.2 million records, and "Sleepy Time Gal" over one million. The song "Toot, Toot, Tootsie", though now associated with Al Jolson, was introduced and was a hit for Ukulele Ike. He has been credited with selling over 74,000,000 records. He became almost a "regular" on the Rudy Vallee radio show, while also appearing on a great many other shows. His Hollywood career began in 1928 when production Chief Irving Thalberg (who had seen his act) first signed him for a musical short, and followed that with a four-year pact and a debut part in the Robert Montgomery feature film "So This is College?". His film career really started to take off after he introduced the song, "Singin' in the Rain", in MGM's 'The Hollywood Review of 1929'. Between the mid-1920s to the mid-'40s, Cliff appeared in over 100 films, (including a cameo appearance in "Gone With The Wind"). In 1940, at the end of his career, Walt Disney used his voice for the character of Jiminy Cricket, in the film "Pinocchio". Then his luck ran out. His two bad habits, gambling and drinking, would cause many problems. He was twice divorced and in the following 20 years, glamorous jobs eluded him. He only found occasional radio and second-rate nightclubs appearances, and by the mid-'60s, Cliff was bankrupt. Cliff had a very prolific Hollywood career - appearing in 75 films starting with 'Marian' in 1929 and ending with 'The Man from Button Willow' in 1965. During his active 3 decade long career, the little "farm boy" had earned Millions of dollars, but in 1971, he died in a California nursing home ( Virgil Convalescent Hospital. Hollywood, CA.), in abject poverty. After a self-destructive life full of drinking, gambling, problems with the IRS and decades of obscurity, Cliff's body lay unclaimed for over a week because his identity was unknown.

Cliff Edwards (Animation - Voice)
legends.disney.go.com/legends/detail
Cliff Edwards' uniquely ebullient voice won him the role as Jiminy Cricket in "Pinocchio" and resulted in one of the most inspirational of Disney songs, the Oscar®-winning "When You Wish Upon A Star."

As film critic Leonard Maltin wrote for the Cliff Edwards CD, released under the Take Two label, "His casting as the voice of Jiminy Cricket has granted him a kind of immortality; what man, woman or child hasn't heard him sing 'When You Wish Upon a Star?'"

Born in Hannibal, Missouri, on June 14, 1895, Cliff ran away from home at 14, eventually landing in St. Louis, where he sang for nickels in saloons. He learned the ukulele and developed an unusual singing style that he called "eefin," where he created a kazoo-like sound with his elastic, three-octave range voice. And when a waiter couldn't remember his name, nicknaming him Ike, Cliff began to bill himself as "Ukulele Ike."

While living in Chicago and working with a pianist named Bobby Carleton, who wrote a song "Ja Da," the duo transformed it into one of the biggest hits of the 1920s. Almost overnight, Cliff became a favorite crooner recording such songs as "June Night."

On the stages of New York, Cliff worked with many stars of the time, including stuttering comedian Joe Frisco at the Palace Theatre. In 1924, he stole the show in George Gershwin's "Lady Be Good," starring Fred Astaire, when he introduced the song "Fascinatin' Rhythm," and later replaced Rudy Vallee as the star of "George White's Scandals."

In 1928, Cliff arrived in Los Angeles and signed a four-year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, debuting in the Robert Montgomery feature "So This Is College?" He went on to introduce the song "Singin' in the Rain" in "The Hollywood Revue of 1929" and established himself as a bona fide film star, subsequently appearing in more than 100 motion pictures, including the classic "Gone With the Wind" with Clark Gable.

After "Pinocchio," Cliff encored the voice of Jiminy Cricket in such Disney films as "Fun and Fancy Free" in 1947. In the years that followed, either he (with his ukulele in hand) or his voice as Jiminy Cricket, were featured in more than 30 episodes of the popular television series -- "The Mickey Mouse Club." Cliff also voiced one of the crows in the 1941 animated feature Dumbo, in which he introduced the infectious "When I See an Elephant Fly," and in 1956, recorded his final album "Ukulele Ike Sings Again" for the Disneyland label.

Because of personal and health issues, his career slowed during the 1950s and '60s. Cliff Edwards died in Hollywood on July 17, 1971."

Hi, Apocalyptipals!
I spent the 6/6/6 in Sin City! I actually played ukulele on the Vegas Strip briefly and then won about $50 in "Let it Ride".
I also ate at an ass-bad buffet (Excalibur) where I only, in retrospect, ate thing that were dangerous if poorly cooked... shellfish, bivalves and such.
I met some nice folks out here (I learned a lot about the dealer's dialysis.) and, in a fantastically surreal moment had this conversation as I walked through the Vegas airport.

"Excuse me?"
"Yeah?"
"I just wanted to say that I saw Uke-y Stardust at the Chabot and really enjoyed it."

I was, as you might expect, totally gobsmacked.

The Ukulele Apocalypse, Amy Zing, and 5 Cent Coffee are playing at Brainwash!

Hot on the heels of the success of Uke-y Stardust, your favorite off-kilter musicians with day jobs are at it again! Bring your sweetie, your big ears, and your dirty laundry out for a toe-tapping, gut-busting, fluff-and-fold evening of musical delight!

Kelly McCubbin, The Ukulele Apocalypse, (tribes.tribe.net/ukeapocalypse)
may very well be the only uke player to segue from Cliff Edwards to Billy Squier and live to tell the tale.

Amy Zing (mymusicalsaw.tribe.net/), with her trusty saw, Stella, dreams of touring hardware stores across the country, finding the beauty hidden among the mundane.

5 Cent Coffee is an eclectic trio dedicated to organic old fashioned sound; an amalgamation of a by-gone nation, mixed with the fresh scent of a smile or the sound of a lament. Ukulele driven original material with stand-up bass and melodian - throw in a washboard, a kazoo - some junk - an old shoe, wear a grumpy hat, cry a tear or two, and you're there. http://tribes.tribe.net/5centcoffee

Friday, May 12th, 9 PM
Brainwash Cafe, 1122 Folsom St., San Francisco
F-R-E-E!

Sad, but true. The glorious, glamorous purple furry vest that Kelly wore at the Uke-y show is MIA.

It was last seen in the kitchen at the Rite Spot, but somehow didn't make it into his car at the end of the night.

Has anyone seen this fabulous garment? We had to skin fifteen muppets to make it.

Yes, I jumped on the Crosby bandwagon really hard recently (pre-WWII Crosby, of course). As Amy put it "This is almost as great as your Calypso phase."
So anyway, I listen to far too much of the stuff, sorta interspersed with my regular diet or Cliff Edwards and, lately, The Boswell Sisters.
Anyway, here's my point, this page has some great, slightly edited, video clips of the Bing's first combo, The Rhythm Boys, from the 1929 feature "King Of Jazz". http://www.redhotjazz.com/kingofjazz.html
During this picture, Crosby was in jail for drunk driving and was being transported by police to the studio for filming every day... in handcuffs!
The version of "So the Bluebirds anb the Blackbirds Got Together" on here is priceless and highly recommended to all my zombie-like teenage followers.

Five years, that’s all we’ve got....

The opening number was astounding.....

Pushing thru the market square, so many mothers sighing
News had just come over, we had five years left to cry in
News guy wept and told us, earth was really dying
Cried so much his face was wet, then I knew he was not lying
I heard telephones, opera house, favourite melodies
I saw boys, toys electric irons and t.v.’s
My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things to store everything in there
And all the fat-skinny people, and all the tall-short people
And all the nobody people, and all the somebody people
I never thought I’d need so many people

A girl my age went off her head, hit some tiny children
If the black hadn’t a-pulled her off, I think she would have killed them
A soldier with a broken arm, fixed his stare to the wheels of a cadillac
A cop knelt and kissed the feet of a priest, and a queer threw up at the sight of that

I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine, don’t think
You knew you were in this song
And it was cold and it rained so I felt like an actor
And I thought of ma and I wanted to get back there
Your face, your race, the way that you talk
I kiss you, you’re beautiful, I want you to walk

We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise
