Re: Where has everyone gone?
Wed, May 28, 2008 - 2:56 PMTribe in general is dying a slow and painful death, it's not just this tribe it's all tribes (maybe the burning man tribe is still going, I dunno).
Anyway, I'd also like to recommend

Re: Where has everyone gone?
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 10:16 AMI've noticed Tribes dying/slowing, but I am not sure ~why~.
I know that when the blogs started, lots of discussion traffic seemed to vanish into individual blogspace and off the tribe threads.

Re: Where has everyone gone?
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 12:08 PMI think Tribe's seeming demise has two root causes: diminished quality of service and tremendous growth in competion. Either one by itself would not necessarily be a serious problem for Tribe, but the combination puts the company at risk.
Tribe.com has experienced an unusual number of outages over the last year, sometimes for half a day at a time or longer. Clearly the infrastructure needs enhancement, but it's not happening.
In the meantime, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and two million other also-non-interoperable social networking sites have sprung up, and they don't go down, at least not as often or for nearly as long as Tribe.
If Tribe could maintain good uptime, I don't think these other services would be much competition for them given Tribe's unique focus. But when Tribe's offline people go a-wanderin'..... -

Re: Where has everyone gone?
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 12:46 PMTrue Richard, however, I think in the case of the "Tribes" I think people are turning to other sites that are "hobby/interest" specific for their info and socializing.
I notice that the Hula-hooping tribe is one of my most popular tribes because (I'm assuming) there aren't a lot of other places to discuss hula-hooping.
My Motorcycle tribe on the other hand is pretty dead, not that there aren't a lot of people who ride, but it's just that when Tribe goes down (as you stated) there are a lot of other places to go to discuss motorcycle riding.
It makes me kind of sad, because I think Tribe is a really useful and unique place on the web, it's too bad that they can't figure out an appropriate business model.
