Bellydance rummage sale at Detroit Raqs! Friday - Sunday in Ann Arbor

Want to sell some of your bellydance goodies? Or perhaps you're looking for a great deal on some cool stuff. Unveiled Bellydance is sponsoring a "Bellydance Rummage Sale" during Raks Detroit. There will be costumes, hip scarves, and other tempting goodies.

The garage sale will be open from 12:00 - 6:00 on Saturday and 12:00 - 6:00 on Sunday.

If you've got stuff you would like to add to the garage sale, bring it on down. We're hoping to have lots of costumes, hip scarves, jewelry, cd's, fabric, and anything else you think is dance related. For just five percent commission, Unveiled will put your stuff in the garage sale and staff the booth. Please bring your items to sell, clearly tagged with your name and the price you want to charge. Drop offs will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday and ALL items must be picked up no later than 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. SCA dance event Saturday, March 28--Saline, MI

Hello all, the local Ann Arbor chapter of the SCA (www.sca.org) is hosting it's annual all-dance event on Saturday, March 28: terpsichore.cynnabar.org. You don't have to be an SCA member to attend--only make an attempt at pre-16th Century clothing. Feel free to message me and ask what the heck that means.

We don't have all of the dance classes ironed out yet but they will include: Morning warm-up, Intro to ME dance, Beginner and Intermediate ME drumming, Intro to ME music, and Improvisational Dance. Please note we will have a performance section at the hafla, followed by open dancing with live drumming and musicians.

Workshop 1: Shady Dames of Seville; 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
A class inspired in equal parts by Flamenco, the Fine Art of flirtation, old dance hall...and every performer's need for self-defense. Onça's Fan Fusion is long on musicality, emotive power, attitude and upper body strength. Savor the flavor of Duende (passion), and explore the potential of every woman's indispensible tool; the Fan. Most fans will work: feather fans and fan veils will be discussed, but are not usable for the purposes of class. Onça's preferred fans will be for sale at the event, or bring your own.

Workshop 2: Creepy Combos; 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Best known onstage for highly emotive performance, let Onça share with you some favorite Bandit Queen combos with 'Alternative' content: this is creepy, Kali, not-your-grandma's pretty bellydance. Starting with serious warm-ups and drills for internal work, this material is great for gothique, nightclub and storytelling bellydance. And, Wicked fun!

What I am going to do with my Summer

O.k. So I am taking June, July, and August off from preforming and am going to do some cool stuff

1. Take lost of dance lesson in anything and everything except bellydance!!!!
2. Got to lots of museums and art gallerys and look at stuff, I hate most modern art I don't get it. Ugly colors splattered on cavas is not art it looks like my dads painter pants. It makes me think something is wrong with the person who made it . Anyways that is another story I am going to go look at a lot of art.
3. I am going to lot's of show including the ballet and opera and circus and whatever else I can aford tickets too.
4. I am going to listen to a whole lot of not bellydance music mostly classical music
5. I am going to eat really good food but ideally health food but most imporantly good food.
6. I am going to learn Spainish at least as much as you can learn in three months
7. I am going to hang out with my boyfriend a whole lot
8. I am going to finnishes decorating my appartment
9. I am going to pratice pratice pratice
10. I am going to make a whole lot of new costumes
11. I am going to Make a whole lot of new choreographies
12. I am going to go to alot of parks
Probably a few more things

Then in september I am going to go to Spain for two weeks!!!!
Then I will do show again and show you all what I did with my Summer

Let Zafira share some of their secrets of choreography creation. This workshop works on stage presence, posture, working with other dancers, and shows how to make even a simple choreography dynamic. Also, We will work in pairs/small groups to learn a short choreography.

Crystal, thank for hosting and bringing Joseph to the Midwest. It was fun working with you and the rest of the girls!

Joseph, thanks for being such a great photographer to work with! I was very nervous since it was my first time working with a professional photographer, but you gave great direction and put me much at ease. The initial shots look great and I can't wait to see the final, processed versions!

Richard, you made me look absolutely beautiful and I love, love, love what you did with my hair for the goth/industrial part and I love what you did with my eyes!

New York Class

Last night we had out first New York class in Brooklyn. We had over 30 people in the class!!!! It was such a hit that we will be start a second class in Brooklyn just to keep up with the demand. There were a lot of fun people in the class from advance dancers from the area to several people taking there first class. We even had a 9 year old girl.

Unveiled Holiday Hafla and Preformances

After learning all of these wonderful new dances, we need a chance to show them off. Unveiled Productions is hosting a Holiday Showcase and Hafla on Saturday December 15th at 7:30pm at the Unveiled Studio. Entry is just $5, so bring family, bring friends, bring anyone that will enjoy an evening of drumming and dancing. We will have special performances from the Unveiled students, members of the Unveiled Dance company, and Crystal will be flying in from New York for the occasion. Crystal will be coming back to Michigan from New York for a special level 1 and 2 technique workshop. This is a great workshop to help prepare you for the upcoming Suhaila Level 1 workshop in 2008. Crystal will be teaching from the Unveiled Level 1 manual as well as adding some new skills from her upcoming Level 2 manual. This a great way to clean up your basic skills, posture and conditioning as well as adding some new advances technique to your practice.
This workshop is ideal for all levels of belly dance from your beginner students to the professional dancers.

Back from California

Just got back for Suhaila's Level 2 weeklong at her studio in Berkeley. My feet hurt but it was worth it.
I got there a day early and went up to Napa Valley. Way cool. Drank to much wine and ate a fabulous dinner with Oster and cavier. however you spell that.
5 hours of dance each day but I still managed to get out and night and see the town and eat some good food. Some of the girls were up for going out and seeing stuff with me.

I also got to take a class with Jamilla Salimpour while I was there.She is somethings. Besides the fact that she is 81 and still teaching she is full of great stories and just a really likeable person. Each day she would come in at lunch and show us old videos and tell us stories and teach us stuff. She was in an Elephant stamped will she was on the back of an elephant. She has done and seen all kinds of things.She is one cool lady.

The workshop was crazy. You just sweat for 5 hours a day and dance like you are on speed. I didn't know I could dance that fast. If you ever go out there get a hotel with a hottube that is all I am saying. Happily at the end off it all I past the level 2 test. I don't even want to know what level 3 is all about yet. I am just going to be happy in Level 2 for a while and let it all sink in.

Man my quads are like rocks!!! Those squat turns!!! To think I went to physical therapy for weeks last year to build up my quads when all I needed to be doing was those turns! Im' going to keep doing them as soon as I can get them to loosen up a bit.

The Big Announcement

As many of you know I have been commuting back and forth from Michigan to New York City over the last year. While it has been worth every minute it has also been quit a lot of work commuting almost weekly, living out of suitcases, and being divided between two worlds. As of October 14th I will be making the move and calling New York my new home. I plan to come back to Michigan monthly or bio monthly for workshops, private lessons, performance, and just staying in touch with the dance community in Michigan.

Mia of Unveiled Dance and the Lunatic Vagabonds will be taking charge of the Unveiled Dance Company and heading up project and events related to the dance company. Several dancers with the dance company will continue to teach Unveiled format classes in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and surrounding areas. Stay tuned to next month newsletter and our website for details on classes and dance company performances.

I can not stay enough how much I have loved my dance time in Michigan, how much I have grown and how much the dance community here has made an impact not only on my dancing but on my life. You will all be missed greatly and I look forward to coming back and seeing all the new and wonderful things you are up to.

Special love to the members of Unveiled Dance for making my dream realities. To Kerry and Kristy for stick with me from the beginning and the endless amount of time and energy you have put into Unveiled Dance. It has been a joy to watch you grow so much over the years. Over her 10+ years as an instructor and troupe director of RMH, Stephanie has innovated a unique interpretation of tribal improv (ATS) and modern tribal fusion upon a solid foundation of basic bellydance movement vocabulary.

I Need A Man!!!! (Cross Posted)

Get your minds out of the gutter. I already have one for that!

Next Friday night is the BIG Unveiled Dance Company's production of "Elemental" at the Towsley Auditorium in Ann Arbor.

My dance partner and I were scheduled to perform a duet. Unfortunately, last Sunday he broke his toe and cannot dance.

I'm really bumming because the dance is really fun and flirty - kind of bellydance goes ballroom and it deserves to be in this show.

The choreo is fairly simple. I think what's more important than dancing this dance perfectly is being able to have fun on stage with it.

Any guys willing to step up and dance with me? Know of anyone?

3:15 - East African Dance

Amaraba originates from Rwanda, and has become a traditional dance in Uganda as well. Ugandan women dance it when they want to express their happiness because of the year's good harvest. Mimicking the long-horned cow, the movements of the dance are robust, yet fluid, inspired by the migration patterns and the body's rhythmic modulations. Students will learn basic East African dance movements to entrancing music, accompanied by live drums. All levels are welcome!

Were has all the sapport gone?

A year ago I had to turn people away from workshops because we just couldn't fit all the people who wanted to come. Now I feel I 'mbegging people to come to our events and am taking large final loss to make them happen with so few #'s coming.
Were has everyone gone?
Tomarrow is the Karim Nagi workshop and show and we have all of about 15 people signed up. This is hardly enough to cover an event like this. On top of that is a very afordable workshop only $30.
Is there some reason people no longer want to come to our events? Large groups of people who once came no longer come to anything? Whats the deal?

Bacchanal Promotions presents: Inter-Lewd!!

There are only 10 days left to prepare for the madness we have in store for you at Inter-Lewd!

For those of you who don't know, Inter-Lewd is a variety show style party in celebration of Salathiel and Rune Palland's birthdays. It will be held at AJ's Cafe in Ferndale (9 Mile just West of Woodward) and will feature several of your favorite performances by several of your favorite performers! We'll have newly choreographed breathtaking fire performances by myself, Lex, and Fleck, as well as of course belly dancing, contact juggling, a nationally known Middle Eastern band, and a DJ ready to keep the party going for hours.

In addition to the entertainment, the event will be fully catered by AJ's, and the cafe will be open to anyone attending. We will be having a Hafla (at AJ's) following the performances with an alcohol bar for those 21+

The party starts at 8pm, and the Hafla will begin at roughly 11:30. It's Friday, August 17th, mark your calendars!

Am I the only one offended by this??? Mayor Pro Tem Carney is "leery of the plan and where it might lead"??!!??? To what? Prositution?? Public lewdness??? It's in Birmingham for Pete's sake!
There is a public hearing set for Monday at 7:30. Perhaps a flood of emails gently educating him how wrong he is might help this restauranteer get his flippin license. Geezzeee.....

Officials torn on belly dancing in city restaurant

Belly dancing -- isn't that a bit un-Birmingham?

Not to restaurateur Elie Mondalek, who wants to offer what he calls low-key entertainment, which includes belly dancing, at Elie's Mediterranean Cuisine, a 64-seat restaurant located on Pierce.

But across the street at city hall, Mayor Pro Tem Don Carney is leery of the plan and where it might lead.

"This, to me, flies right in the face of what we were trying to avoid," he said at a commission meeting, according to the Birmingham Eccentric.

"I know there are all kinds of arguments that belly dancing is an art form ... but once you go there you sort of set the bar for what low-key entertainment is, and I'm very uncomfortable with that."

In a city known more for chic shopping than ethnic entertainment, Mondalek wants to add belly dancing as part of his effort to secure a coveted bistro license, which would allow him to serve alcohol.

Mondalek said the dancer would shimmy among the tables for about five minutes an hour, one night per week. He calls that low-key entertainment, and the city's planning board has agreed.

He has the support of City Commissioner Julie Plotnik.

"It's not offensive dancing, it's a culture," she said. "That's something this city needs more of."

But at a hearing last month, Carney said he would support Mondalek's bistro license only if he boots the belly-dancing concept.

"I have nothing against belly dancing per se," he said in an interview. "I'm just trying to engage my fellow commissioners in a dialogue about what's low-key entertainment."

Carney added that he's not sure bistro licenses should include any dancing -- belly or not.

A public hearing is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Although belly dancing has a hoochie-mama reputation among some non-aficionados, within the area's large Middle Eastern community, belly dancing and its variations are traditional folk dances performed at weddings and birthdays by women of all ages.

One of Birmingham's most genteel institutions, the Community House, has offered belly-dancing classes for years.

And last Wednesday, belly dancing came to a city park as part of a Lebanese festival.

"There are different styles of any dance, and I think as long as it's done tastefully, it's appropriate," said Fadi Nassar, 36, of Birmingham.
