Church of Elemental Awareness event this Sunday July 13th..

Hey Gang,

I just wanted to let everyone know that I will be leading church this Sunday July 13th. We’ll be going on one of my favorite hikes in Millcreek Canyon, the Rattle Snake gulch trail to Pipeline trail. This section of Pipeline trail then leads to a look out point over the Salt Lake City valley. I have probably done this hike over two dozen times, and it is a very meaningful one for me. This is also a relatively easy hike in that it is just three miles round trip and involves about 550 feet of elevation gain at the very beginning of the trail. This is a child friendly hike, so feel free to bring the kids along. We’ll plan on meeting at my place at 4:00 then leaving for Millcreek canyon at 5:00 to start the hike by 5:30pm. This is about a two hour hike (including some time at the SLC overlook point) so we could make it back to the trail head as early at 7:30. Everyone is welcome to meet either at my place at 4:00ish for a short talk about the trail and car pooling at 4:30, or meet at the trail head no later than 5:30 for departure. I’ll be talking a little about what this trail, what it means to me and how it served to become a catalyst for my current interest in hiking and mountain climbing.

Some things to keep in mind for this hike:

Millcreek is a toll canyon. They charge $2.25 for each vehicle leaving the canyon. This is where car pooling will come in handy.

This is an easy hike but I do recommend wearing hiking boots if you have them. Also be sure to bring some water for hike. We’ll be hiking in the later part of the day to avoid the heat, but it will still be hot at the viewpoint at the end of the trail.

This trail is popular among mountain bikers. These guys have the right of way on the trail so it’s always good to step aside when you see them coming.

The first part of this hike is over a series of switch backs in the shade, and the second half is flat on the exposed mountain side leading to the mouth of the canyon.

Rattlesnakes do live in this part of the canyon, but I’ve only seen one in my over ten years of hiking this trail. They only bite if provoked so it’s important to leave them alone.

Directions to my House:

I live on 3114 South Lincoln (940 East) Street in the basement. You can access my house on 900 east by turning east on Gregson / Lincoln street or via 3300 South by turning North on directly onto Lincoln Street. Park somewhere in next to the ward house as parking is limited. Once you find my house go past the carport with two vehicles, then past the screen door on the left hand side. The entrance to the Dave Cave is in back of the house on the North side. Call me if you have any difficulties finding my place.

Directions to Millcreek Canyon:
From Downtown Salt Lake City, head south on either I-15, State Street or 700 East for 2-3 miles. Access I-80 heading east and take it 4 or 5 miles to the I-215 Belt Route. Head south on the I-215 Belt Route for about 2 miles and exit at 3900 South. Take a left at the top of the exit ramp and head east. Proceed just a few hundred yards to Wasatch Boulevard, the first light. Take a left and head north 1 block to the light at 3800 South. Take a right on 3800 South and head east. The road runs through a residential area before taking you up into the canyon. After about 1 mile, is an entrance station. (The attendant there will supply you with a simple map and answer any questions you might have.) The trailhead is 6.1 miles past the entrance station on the north (left) side of the road.

If you are planning on attending Burning Man and intend to camp with Planet Euphoria I need you to respond to me and make your intentions known. If you have been part of our camp in the past but are planning on camping elsewhere I would like the courtesy of knowing that also. I would appreciate your responses ASAP. If you have any other questions about the camp please let me know. Thanks, and I look forward to seeing you on the playa.

Walpurgis

Well, it's looking like spring is going to blast us with some warmth this weekend. With that thought in mind the Church of Elemental Awareness would like to send a warm invite to our fellow burners!! We are holding a Walpurgis event this Sunday, April 29th. We have a day full of good spring time fun!! First off, traditionally we will celebrate the Maypole. This year we will be painting the pole as a group...so if you would like to participate in that, we should meet up sometime between 11 and 12. (meet at Wasatch Jr. High)

We are going to take a brief hike up Millcreek for some spring time wild flower planting. I am trying to get my hands on some trees, but we will wait and see what happens with that. It's going to be beautiful, but warm...so pack yourself with a bit of water!!

Upon returning to the maypole we will decorate it, and of course do the elemental chant dance!!! C'mon folks, it's just fun!!!! :D and of course we will eat drink and be merry!!!!

All the maypole activity will be happening at the "park" area of the Wasatch Jr high (that burned down a few summers ago.)

Quilt Project

What can I do (about our environmental issues)?
Can you make a quilt square?
It can be simple or intricate.
Make just one or make a few.
If you want to make a quilt square please do and invite your friends to join the project.
Don’t commit, just do it.

The Quilt Project:
I want to keep this simple, at least for the first project.
Make just one or many quilt squares. Get them to me (Miranda) by May 14th. We will make the quilt or quilts then auction them off. 100% of the proceeds will go to an environmental cause.

Quilt Square Stats:
~1 foot x 1 foot square fabric
~½ inch seam allowance (z.about.com/d/sewing/1/8...lowance2.jpg)
~machine washable
~decorate anyway you want (suitable for all ages)
(Ask friends if you need help. Have square making parties amongst yourselves if you want! This can be independent or group positive activism, its up to you, woo hoo!)

Organization Help Wanted:
~Friends to help put the quilt pieces together
~Friends to organize the facilitate the quilt auction
(I am a busy person, even if I could I don’t want to do everything myself. I would like help making this happen. Please only contact me for this if you have the will and time to put into it. I would like helpers who are serious about the project and responsible.)

The Cause:
We have been talking about a cooperative algae farm project for the proceeds of the first quilt auction to go towards. I wanted a cause that will have the largest benefit for our world for our buck and I feel this may be it. Please let me know your opinions and suggestions concerning the cause. The auction results will determine how much we can do with this project.

Algae bioreactor kits will be set up in many homes (maybe yours). Algae will be collected periodically and used for its valuable byproducts which include: oxygen and air filtration for your home, fertilizer for your garden, harvested and, once the facility exists, brought to a centralized ethanol production facility which will also host a larger algae farm. Members of this co-op will have access to ethanol produced at the facility they contribute to. The production facility will give workshops the community about growing algae, eating algae, algal ethanol production, and ethanol conversions of our communities gasoline powered vehicles.

CofEA is throwing a benefit/fundraising party on the 22nd. Tickets are $10 and includes 2 drinks (2 more drinks can be purchased for $5 at the door). We are raising funds for the next year to help with burn projects, free day parties and more. PLUS: helping out a kick ass local business. Church for this Sunday February 17th - The Hero's Journey.

A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.

- The Hero with a Thousand Faces.

This Sunday for Church I’ll be leading a discussion of the Hero’s Journey and sharing the movie ‘Renegade’ with everyone. The Hero’s Journey is the basic pattern and archetype found in many of the myths and legends around the world. It is the story of one man’s departure from his know world, initiation and return to the ordinary to help his fellow man. This is one of my personal favorite archetypes and one that can be found in stories as old at Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ and as new as your latest Hollywood action flick. The movie we’ll be watching fits the Hero’s Journey perfectly, and is one which really resonated with me when I first saw it nearly two years ago. So I hope everyone can join me this Sunday at 5:00pm at Rob’s place (roughly 1100 North and Redwood Road) to explore this topic. Contact me if you need further directions to the location. COFEA 2 year Anniversary-02/03

I?m excited to be hosting the Church of Element Awareness two year gathering at my place in South Salt Lake in a couple of weeks. We?ll be gathering at my place on Sunday February 3rd to celebrate the second anniversary of the founding of our very own church. The day?s festivities will get underway at 2:00pm and continue until about 8:00 in the evening. Our main focus for the second year party is the construction of a large CofEA group collage. Everyone is invited to bring either a photo of themselves, or a picture of something which represents them, for inclusion in the collage. Throughout the afternoon and evening everyone will have an opportunity to add something to this project. The final product can then be displayed at future CofEA gatherings or at events where the church has a presence such as Element 11 or Burning Man.

In addition to working on the CofEA collage we?ll also be coloring mandalas throughout the afternoon. The mandalas are photocopied from a coloring book, so everyone will have the opportunity to color their own or share with someone else. While the Mandalas will be provided, please do bring crayons or something else to color with.

Seeing as the CofEA two year party takes place on the first Sunday of February, we?ll be holding it in conjunction with our very own Mr. Chu?s Fast Sunday Brunch. Rather than meeting for brunch at a restaurant, we?ll be holding a potluck brunch throughout the afternoon, so bring your favorite dish or drink to share. One last thing, everyone is invited to bring a nonperishable food donation for the Utah Food Bank.

Things to bring:

Something which represents you to add to the collage.
Crayons or pastels for coloring the mandalas.
Something to eat or drink for the Fast Sunday Brunch Potluck.
And a canned food donation for the Utah Food Bank.

A silly Rant of numbers

THis is on the element 11 board but I hought I would put it here too. PLease respond on the other board if you must please. Thank you.

OK..So This is really silly but I am just this kind of number and Word geek. I blame the Ceremonial Magicians of the world (you now who you are) but I just have to put this down somewhere.
(ahem) Element 11 was originally called Sinorgy, Sin has a number value of 770 thus relating to an egyptian name of God "ON" . Also giving us the double seven showing venus or artsiness in motion with a zero possibly refering to the endless cycle.
Orgy is from Orgia which is a ritual. The Rites of Eleusis were such rites causing a drunken like stuper and forever changing the life of those who participated in them. The only early rites which we have no idea of what really happened. No one told or wrote. (ED. word)Also Orgy has a number value of 238 which makes it numerically equivalent to the Zohar. A Jewish tradition of writings commonly used by Jewish mystics and Rabbi's. The Zohar is much more than I care to put down here so if you are unfamiliar I am sorry.
These two parts together bring us the number value of 1008. This is, as a symbol the division between Ego (as defined by freud) and Knowledge or book learning.
Of course we all know it now as Element 11 which as we know is the element Salt, or NA. (hehe)
Salt is in part four ideas, each representing a "magickal element" Subtilis, Aqua, Lux, and Terra. The four quarters drawn. Let me come back to Salt in pt 2 of this rant.
Element has a value of 129 which is equivelant to Pleasure (ODNH in Hebrew) or Delight (OVNG). and with the 11 comes to 140 which is equivalent to ISIS or to Muhammid ( an alternate spelling). Also "Silly" like this rant.
Then is the NA idea. In hebrew, which is where I have been drawing the numeric values to here, NA means failure..so let us look at greek, which gives us 51 or a staff, and ONE (ness). And in Enochian its 56 which is equivalent to ABOZA, the cherubic name of the air angle of the Earth Tablet. Seems difficult but will be worth it later.
When considered under the gematrtia of nothing or no-thing we come across the number 13. OH what do we do here. Thirteen has so many ideas to it now but lets look at the equivalencies first. Adeptus MInor comes to mind as does adjustment (the tarot card) Also AZAZOTH the intelligence of infinite chaos. Also we get burning (again) and the idea of the Abyss or St. john the divines dark light of the soul. (don't get me started on that subject) But still we get a dominatrix, the enterer and hoor-paar-kraat. Also Pisces and buggery, desert, and the phrases "I am powerless", I console not", and "I invoke"...We also get "Robert Plant" here.......hmmmmm....
so now is just SALT...
I am so very sorry this is so long at this point I want to quit. "I see thee hate the hand and the keyboard..."
Salt as we discussed is another wording for the four elements but is also A numeric value of 30 in enochian which gives us OAK. Hmmm. did I explain Enochian? oh well...look it up its just another system of Magick brought about in Elizabethan times by a swindler and Queen elizabeths mathamagician...?
In greek it is 531 which is "altogether".
To return to Hebrew it gives us 100 which is equivelant to "in na gadda da vida" (hehe) or Lucious, the original name of Nero.
The concept that most intrigues me is the opposition of Saint and Salt. First there is the ST which is Shin And Tau. An idea of crucifying (also equivalent in G.O.N. to NA) The spirit. The Death of the sperm on the altar of the Goddess. The tarot cards of Judgement (shin) and The world (tau) . A force particular to the times in our world since the 1920's. These two letters are teh first and the last of each word. this is where they are the same idea with very opposite centers or Ego's. "AL" is the presence of all things. The knowledge and the art combined. The Ox and the goad to move it. While AIN is the negative. Not the lack of anything for no-thing has existed. No center has formed, no word spoken, a pure psychedelic infinity. Before the creation of everything.
Whew..So the idea of saint and the idea of Salt are in opposition. WE have Salt...and plenty of it. A force of our times with the presence of no-presence. A giving up of the future (sperm) to the greater principle (altar) Of that which is not yet.
Or we could be a bunch of drunks in the desert. either way I get to play records out there somewhere this year.

Okay. So, no really I dont always have a whole bunch of time to post what CofEA is going to be doing on all the sites.

I'm hoping to get me a moderator that can keep all the pages updated, meaning that my tribe friends will soon know what CofEA will be up to on a week to week basis (I'm hoping)

I'm sorry that I have actually been so bad about getting onto tribe, I love when the messages come thru my email tho, becuase I get THAT daily.

Anyway, I hope to see many of you soon, tho it's unlikely I will be at the Christmas Tree burn, but with every cold day, it does mean that warm is soon to come!

meaning more hiking, camping, and merry making in the out doors!!

What happened to the CofEA website?

Also, I'm looking for folks to take some pallets out to Seabase, so give me a holler if anyone out there is available. Trance Dance

Hey kiddies, I am gonna be hosting a Shamanic Trance Dance. April 27th starting at 7PM and lasting until breakfast. It will be held at the South Valley UU church (7200 South 23rd East). I will be doing a short lecture on Shamanic Ecstacy and then will be playing Goa Trance all night long. I have a killer light show that will be running throughout the night also. Drummers and fire people bring your stuff. We will have an intermission for drumming and spinning.

HABITAT FOR HERETICAL HERMITS PROJECT!

Some of you may have heard of the legendary Sun Tunnel Hermit, "Russell".
Unfortunately, when CofEA was at the Sun Tunnels last Summer Solstice, he was "indisposed" and we were not graced with his presence...

Well, Russell is back, and WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY!!!!

Russell is great, and has many stories and insights to share. He lives out by the sun tunnels, alone, with no electricity or running water. He is somewhat of a "desert guardian" and an overall interesting guy.

HERE IS WHAT HE SAYS:

I am looking for donations of lumber or plywood to
help rebuild my house out there (heavily vandalized recently).
Even if you don't have materials to help with the building part, those who are interested can come along to camp/party/help out with work.
Eventually, there will be a hot tub and other amenities! If you're
interested, or think you might be in the future, let me know.

Here is what I say:
He will be out there the entire previous week, however, we are heading out the weekend of 23, 24, 25 of MARCH (fri/sat/sun) to haul wood and help Russell get that desert domicile up to Heretical Hermit Standards! can't wait for the hot tub ;-)

If you are up for an early camping trip to help our favorite desert hermit rebuild his home and up for some good times in the process... LET ME KNOW! We will caravan out.

CofEA NEW YEARS EVE!!!

We will be having church service at the home of Phoenix & adept on 31 December 2006 at the usual time: 5pm-8pm.
This will give you goer outers time to go out, however, the rest of you are welcome to stay and ring in the new year with us here at home, including sleepovers- we have the room, however, you have to fight over the trampoline, if you want to make that your bed.

Word has it that our Mighty Mighty DJ West of Emotion will be hauling up his decks for the evening... and many of you know that here on the corner of 15190 So. and 15190 So. (I shit you not, I'll show you the sign outside next time you are over) That usually makes for one hot night!

We will be doing Year Spells. WTF is a year spell, Phoenix? Well, I will tell you...
In this case, it's a collage made from a picture of YOU and magazine clippings, yep, just like first grade. However with these collages, we will define and describe what it is we want to bring into our lives for the year 2007. I've done these in years past, and they are always a lot of fun both to make, and to watch over the course of the year.

WHAT TO BRING:
Old magazines
Glue stick
Poster board
Scissors
Food & drink & party favors if you are staying....
PLUR... and i mean it.
