I want your opinion. Does a man going without a shirt = aggressiveness?

I need some others to weigh in on this topic please and give me your opinion. I recently had a debate with a friend about men going with out shirts in their own home. I have no problem with men hanging out without their shirts on when they are in their own home or at a park or some such. I can see at certain events it would not be appropriate, but definitely just hanging out in their own home they can choose to go without a shirt at their leisure whether there are other family members or children present or not.

He says at anytime for a man to go shirtless shows aggressiveness and anti-social behavior. This all came about because the older brother of my significant other came over while my significant other was lounging on the couch without his shirt watching tv with the kids in the room (g14, b12, g11). The brother started to lecture him about "go put a shirt on" and how " inappropriate it was". Saying that my S.O. was making the kids uncomfortable. We asked the kids if they were uncomfortable with it now or have ever been. They said no and looked at me like I was nuts for asking. My son routinely goes without a shirt as well when he is at home. Thats when the brother went into the whole shirtless = aggression and such. We promptly told him, in his house he may do as he pleases and we will do as we please in our own home raising our kids the way we want them to be raised. That includes being comfortable with their own bodies and others as well. And we want them to feel they are free to be themselves and live anyway they want to in their own home.

Then he went off on how disgusting it was and such and acted as if I was a defective parent for letting my children be around it. I grew up with a father that worked construction for many years and was a farmer as were several of my relatives. More than half my childhood memories are of the guys working shirtless outside. Or coming in the house after a hot day and relaxing with out their shirts. When we went to town or shopping they wore shirts no problem, but at home it was however they were comfortable around their family.

So what are your thoughts on this matter. I need some opinions. Shirts or Shirtless? Does going shirtless signal aggression or anti-social behavior in your home or outside of it? Btw my S.O. is anything but disgusting with his shirt off. He was in the military for 8 years and it very well built.

Quilt Project

What can I do (about our environmental issues)?
Can you make a quilt square?
It can be simple or intricate.
Make just one or make a few.
If you want to make a quilt square please do and invite your friends to join the project.
Don’t commit, just do it.

The Quilt Project:
I want to keep this simple, at least for the first project.
Make just one or many quilt squares. Get them to me (Miranda) by May 14th. We will make the quilt or quilts then auction them off. 100% of the proceeds will go to an environmental cause.

Quilt Square Stats:
~1 foot x 1 foot square fabric
~½ inch seam allowance (z.about.com/d/sewing/1/8...lowance2.jpg)
~machine washable
~decorate anyway you want (suitable for all ages)
(Ask friends if you need help. Have square making parties amongst yourselves if you want! This can be independent or group positive activism, its up to you, woo hoo!)

Organization Help Wanted:
~Friends to help put the quilt pieces together
~Friends to organize the facilitate the quilt auction
(I am a busy person, even if I could I don’t want to do everything myself. I would like help making this happen. Please only contact me for this if you have the will and time to put into it. I would like helpers who are serious about the project and responsible.)

The Cause:
We have been talking about a cooperative algae farm project for the proceeds of the first quilt auction to go towards. I wanted a cause that will have the largest benefit for our world for our buck and I feel this may be it. Please let me know your opinions and suggestions concerning the cause. The auction results will determine how much we can do with this project.

Algae bioreactor kits will be set up in many homes (maybe yours). Algae will be collected periodically and used for its valuable byproducts which include: oxygen and air filtration for your home, fertilizer for your garden, harvested and, once the facility exists, brought to a centralized ethanol production facility which will also host a larger algae farm. Members of this co-op will have access to ethanol produced at the facility they contribute to. The production facility will give workshops the community about growing algae, eating algae, algal ethanol production, and ethanol conversions of our communities gasoline powered vehicles.

Contact me with any questions, comments or suggestions.
Thank you,
Miranda

A newbie all around and I want to get connected. Did someone say Utah?

I am new not just this tribe but all of Tribe.net. I am a bi-female in a poly relationship. First, being bi and poly living in a very conservative state I have to be careful who I talk to about my life. I am a professional photographer. I have run a large retail camera store and been lead photographer for over 15 years. I taught photography for many, many years and just recently quit my job to start my own photography business. The one thing about having left the retail camera world is I miss all the contact with other photographers and discussing what they are shooting and what types of equipment they like to use for what purpose. So anytime you want to chat about any of the above, please message me. I look forward to getting to know you.

Also since I am new to Tribes if you have a good tribe that you think I should investigate I would appreciate a steer in that direction. There seem to be so many tribes I tend to get overwhelmed just looking at the lists and forget what I was looking for in the first place. I am a major fan of Art, artistic people, photography of all types, belly dancing, writing, rugby, reading fantasy and fiction, hosting parties etc. If you have found a tribe that you really enjoy would you drop me a line so I can check it out so that I can get more connected. Thanks to all and I hope to hear back from you.

By the way I am also considering doing an art piece based on poly. Shooting poly groups in a mix of looks from the very traditional sit down studio pose to casual home life looks, to tastefully done intimate art shots. if anyone is interested in this aspect you are welcome to let me know. I am looking for real people. Don't think you have to have model looks to be a part of this. Because these relationships we have are important to us too, but its not generally something you just walk into sears and say can you take our family photo hehehe.
If anyone is interested in this aspect, you are welcome to contact me.

Don't be surprised if you see this post on a few sites. I am still learning how to navigate this place and am posting this on a few tribes I have already found.

POI Spinning classes start, indoor location due to weather today

For those that are planning to attend todays first POI spinning classes, I have secured an indoor location due to the unpredictable weather forcast for today.

The location is aproximately 561 west 600 south.
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=561+w+600+s,+Salt+Lake+City,+UT+84101,+USA&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title

The best way to get to this is off of 600 west. Turn on 600 south, one way, and then turn on the first right into the parking lot.

This parking lot is the entrance to the new Utah Arts Alliance studios. The door behind the trailer by the south west wall.

If you have questions, please call Peter at 706.7242

See you guys there.

POI Spinning Classes

I will be starting up a 6 week outdoor POI classes for Beginners to Intermediates. They will be combined unless the class gets too big.

6 Weeks with make-ups for bad weather

Day: Sunday
Start: September 23
End: October 28

Time: 6:00 – 7-7:30 depending on people

Where: My house, unless we get a lot of people. (This is to minimize my travel and fuel cost) I am in Murray. This also allows me to provide music and bathrooms and other comforts the park lacks. I will email you my home address for the location.

Cost:

6 week course:

Cash Paid in full: $90 cash (due at start of first class)
Cash Paid with Credit Card (Through PayPal): $95 (due to prior of the start of class.)

3 installments: $90 + $10 = $100 (due at start of every other class)
Pay as you go: $20 a session (due at start of class)

Drop-In anytime for you or a friend: $25 a session (due at start of class)

Private Lessons: $45 per hour includes video recording of yourself
(discounts for 4 sessions or more, and can be held 2-3x a week)
Private Lessons for 2: $75 per hour, discounts available

Requirements:
Practice POI set: I have a few, but they must be left after the class.
I can make you a practice pair or you can buy some online. I have several options for you. Please email me if you have a pair or need to buy a pair prior to the start of class.

Comfortable clothes. Avoid anything that is baggy as you will tend to hit your clothes more often when first learning.

For Intermediate POI spinners, please list the POI moves you have learned and wish to learn in the six-week course in your email. Remember, in this time frame, 1-2 POI moves is a realistic goal. But if you learn faster, then adding more moves is no problem.

Fire Spinning and Fire Safety Class.

Sunday, October 28
I will be conducting a beginner fire spinning and fire safety workshop.

This class will allow new or beginning fire spinners (staff, poi, fans, fingers, anything) to light up for the first time or gain more experience. This will also allow people that would like to be a fire safety to have first hand experience. Also, this would be a good class for fire safeties in general to just review good fire safety. One of the hands on experience will be using a fire extinguisher, what to use and when, and what happens when a fuel can lights on fire and how to put it out. Also, we will be burning different materials with different fuels to gain a first hand experience.

Fire Spinners: Provide own fuel, fire tools to spin, music if you want, though for your very first spin, you should not spin with it. Appropriate clothing.

Cost: $50

I can provide fuel and tools to spin. $10 additional cost of class. Please indicate the type of fuel you would like to use.

Fire Safety:
Cost: $30
Covers cost of supplies

Location: TBA, need a parking lot location with water access.
Time: 8:00 Pm – 10 Pm

Who Am I?

My name is Peter Strohmeyer (aka Backbone). I have been fire spinning for over 2 years. I have been professionally spinning for 1.5 years (Professional means I get paid to do what I love to do.)
PS. I am looking for indoor space for winter to do lessons. It must have heat, bathrooms, and 12-15 feet ceilings. Also, if anyone has large size mirrors, I am looking for some.

CALL FOR FIRE PERFORMANCE AT BM!!! WOW FIREMUSE STAGE on the ESPLANADE!!!

Dearest fire muses, wizards, goblins and faeries....all creatures of the night....all lovers of fire....
COME OUT AND PLAY!!! NIGHTLY!!!
We will have our very own fire stage performance area right on the esplanade. I am committed to making nightly fire rituals happen. I need people to help me in whatever way the'd like. Solo acts, group peices, anthing and everthing. I am thinking along these lines:

1. Sundown is when we begin. I am creating a big fire chalice to hold the fire of the sun. We will capture the last rays of sun within the chalice and create a small visual ritual around this, with an invocation also. The intention is to channel the power of the fire from the sun.... For continued inspiration, passion and light as we blaze into the night. To honor the flame, our eternal inward and outward flame.

2. After this 5 minute or so ritual for the sun, we begin with performances. I will leave the chalice near the stage so we can light our toys
from it.
We will need some dedicated fire safety folks.
we should have a dj for sound or welcome drummers, live music, etc.

Dont forget we have our GREAT CIRCLE performance dress rehersal preview SPECTACULAR Wednesday night at 10pm (Ill double check on the time)

If you have any questions, comments, ideas, etc please contact me. Feel free to share this info with everyone please!!
MUCHO LUV and FLAMES,
Pamela Miranda, fire muse and preistess of WOW!!!

I stumbled upon this tribe this morning. I am so happy to have found it.

About 8 months ago some friends and I started learning poi and have recently begun to practice with fire once a week now. It is so great to find a fire tribe for Utah. If any of you are ever in the Moab area, look me up, I am always ready to meet other people who play with fire! ;-)

hello!

i am in need of some yellow leather for my E11 fire show costume.
does any one have some in the form of clothing they are looking to get rid of...
or maybe you use leather in your art and have some scraps...
or you know someone who might have some?

i don't need much, scraps and already constructed clothing would totally work.

anyone...?

hi....this is Becky, I am Mouse's fiancee. In case you don't know Mouse was involved in the beginning of Incendiary Circus. We live in Montana currently, and sadly there is no conclave in MT or enough serious fire spinners to support one. On that note we would like to spin with you....if we may. We already have tickets if that is a problem. As a pair we both spin poi, staff, devil sticks (mouse is MUCH better then me) as well as diabolo.....(again better then oh you get it), I eat fire as well as flesh....and we both breathe. Mouse can do one poi/one devil stick.....we call it deevil poi...and we have stilts....three headed 8 foot poi, and a 20 foot long jump rope. You can talk to Aspen about Mouse's skills and will have to trust that I know my shit...If you know Charisse, I used to be her partner in PDX and she can give me a glowing recommendation. In short we want to share our art with you on the playa.

Sound person and Greeter Orientation

Okay here goes: Breath....I am talking to myself...Okay:

Sound peeps needed.

Hopefully you all know that "Nocturnal Safari" from Santa Barbara will be playing after the Satruday night Effigy burn and I need to find a sound person to help coordinate their needs directly. Their sound is very cool...electronica...and we are so thrilled to have them at E-11. The group is Tatiana, Troy and a percussionist. If you are interested in helping me/them please contact me as soon as possible. We will also have some sound needs during the fire show with Tasi the other musical guests.

Greeeter Orientation.
Element 11 is holding a greeter orientation on Thursday May 17 at 7:00 pm at the ONE World Cafe. 41 So 300 East. Everyone who is interested in having a blast at E-11 be a greeter! Shifts are only a couple of hours long and there are a lot of percs and the orientation is just one of them. Have dinner on us and learn what your duties (if you can call them that......hell lets call it your fun) will be and learn the ropes. Sign up for open greeter shifts and confer with your fellow greeters about "what to wear". For those of you who don't know as the greeter coordinator I have aquired my own personal bitch (I mean co-bitch, I have to share him with Dave 23) Randy Candy Man will be there to "whip" you into shape. Oh who are we kidding! We can't call this work it is too much fun!

See you there.
Mabs
and

Who would b e interested in learning contact staff? If there is enough people to do a workshop then I will do a workshop if not I am interested in doing private classes. Considering most of the people who would be interested in learning are probably my friends. I would also like feed back on if you think I should charge and if so what type of fee would be a fair price?

If you don’t know, there are always peeps to fire spin at Liberty Park on Sunday nights. A lot of people come early and hang out around the Drum Circles all day. Middle of the Park, north of the Lake on the east side. Parking can be hell during the day, but at dusk prime spots galore.

We light up around dusk. Bring your toys and fuel and get your groove on. All skills and abilities welcome.

Element 11 Fire Show

Rehearsal Schedule for Element 11 Fire Show 2007

Rehearsals for the fire show at E-11 will begin May 6th and run every Sunday in May as well as an extra rehearsal Thursday May 30th. All rehearsals will take place at 5:00pm. The first two rehearsals 6th and 13th (sorry I know it is mother’s day) will be required for anyone who is performing with fire in the show. I encourage any other performers to attend these rehearsals as well but they are not required. The next two rehearsals 20th and the 27th will be required for everyone who is going to be in the show. Finally the rehearsal on the 30th will be our dress rehearsal and required for everyone to be there.
There will also be a quick run through at E-11 at 2:00pm on Saturday so we can block out the show in the space around the emerald city effigy.

We meet at Liberty Park just north of the drum circle in the large open grass area. The key to making these rehearsals a success is to be on time, be ready to work and to bring all toys needed to work. If we can all commit to doing this we will be productive use our time efficiently and have more time afterwards to play with each other free style! This is a leave no trace event….HaHa…no I am actually serious…please clean your area before leaving the park.

I am so excited to share with you all the idea I already have for the choreograph and costumes but want you to know I welcome and value your ideas and want everyone involved to be part of the creative process.

Fire Safeties are needed as well to insure a safe show for the performers and audience. Anyone interested in being a safety at E-11 please contact me. Here the list of safeties I have already.

Larry
Margaret
Mendy (Fire Safety Chief)

Here is the list I have so far or performers that have contacted me to be involved. If you do not see you name here let me know and I will add you.

Fire Performers
Adriane
Annie
Elisha
April
Aspen
Blossom
Bryce
Chris Delish
Clayton
Del
Gypsy
Ian
Jason Johnson
Jazzy
Kellie
LaLa
Mossie
Pam
Peter
Rebecca
Silky
Tasi
Terry

Other Performers
Paula Rudd- Vocalist
Tasi- Ceremony
Tatiana and Troy-Nocturnal Safari-Music
Drummers

Finally a word about how this show works into the Utah Fire Enclave at Burning Man. The rehearsals used for E-11 are also used to create pieces for performance in the great circle at BM. Many but NOT all performers that are in the E-11 show will be eligible to be in Utah Fire Enclave at BM this year. I will submit only fire performers that have been in the great circle before OR are new performers that demonstrate exceptional skill and stage presence and that have attended rehearsals regularly. There are only 28 days between when the E-11 show goes off and when a finished DVD of our enclave needs to be submitted to Crimson Rose at BM for consideration into the great circle. Therefore, we must utilize the E-11 show to gather footage and fine tune our show.

Incendiary Circus with Utah Art Alliance is presenting the first Art Exhibit with Fire as the Theme in Utah, Pyro: The Art of Fire, from April 6-27. As part of the exhibit, Incendiary Circus has requested a space in the exhibit for a tribute wall for all past and current Utah Fire Spinners and dancers. If you would like to be part of this, please send me or email me your best picture of yourself with or without fire and no larger then 8’x10’, but any size smaller. The picture can be any quality of printing. If you don’t have a glossy photo to submit, you can send me an email of a jpeg that I will print out on my ink jet printer.

You can mail me the pictures or email me your jpeg no later then March 31, 2007. More information about the show can be found here, www.incendiarycircus.org/pyro.htm. Also, if you are planning to attend the Opening Reception/Fund Raiser event, please purchase your tickets online, as there is a limited amount available.

If you know of a fire spinner/dancer that do frequent their email or online, please let them know about this call for pictures for this show.

What's this group for???

More and more the Incendiary Circus thing is migrating and there needs to be a more generic forum for fire artists in the SLC to come together, talk about the craft, compare notes, advertise lessons and classes, coordinate volunteer work, plan for summer festivals, get help for gigs, etc.
