From Manca:
This is a short documentary I filmed while I was training in California in 2008.
It was a part of a visual anthropology project (I study ethnology and cultural anthropology in Slovenia), but I'm more of a dancer than I am a producer/cameraman/editor - so don't expect a professional film :)
I didn't want to define Tribal Style so I deliberately made a very "open" question - It was really interesting to see all what came out -
ATS, improvisation, community, theater, modern dance, pop, free form, ...
The question I asked the dancers was: "How do you think your style differs from other styles of bellydance. What is it like? How would you describe it to a general audience?"
Thanks to all the dancers who shared their thoughts:
Carolena Nericcio – FatChanceBellyDance
Kajira Djoumahna – Blacksheep Bellydance
Paulette Rees-Denis – Gypsy Caravan
Jill Parker – Ultra Gypsy
Ariellah Afalo – Deshret Dance Company
Heather Stants – Urban Tribal Dance Company
Elizabeth Strong – Bellydance Superstars
Kami Liddle – Bellydance Superstars
Amy Sigil – Unmata
Rachel Brice – The Indigo
Filmed and edited by Manca Pavli - Slovenia
Thanks to all of the dancers for their thoughts, time and inspiration!!!
- Hope you enjoy it -

Wed, February 11, 2009 - 1:18 PMit's cool to hear everyone's own vision on this question, all different answers, but yet everybody is talking about the same thing with the same passion, and it's beautifull that it keeps evolving, I think if you keep evolving as a person you see and feel that in your dance too -

Sun, February 22, 2009 - 10:29 AMCool! Did not watch it yet, but a great idea to just ask and see what they have to say, instead of filling int the blank ourselves.
Looking forward to taking the time to watch it. Thanks for the link.

Mon, February 23, 2009 - 3:38 AMI think you're right!! You should always try to evolve as a person and as a dancer.
And I think that an open mind is very important. Of course it's always possible you don't like a certain style, but I think people should always respect each other and try to find the pretty or the uniqueness in the things they don't like.

It's really interesting to know about the inspirations of these totally different beautiful dancers. And yet when I'm saying totally different, they are united in one way (ok maybe more) and that is (their passion) for Tribal Style Bellydance. They all interpret this dance style in their own way and dance in their own way.
All different, and all so beautiful!!
