The talented Kitiera is coming over to the Netherlands for a weekend of workshops on november 1 and 2!
Take this chance to meet a wonderfull dancer who is being trained by Suhaila to be a teacher in her format.
She is a valued member of the Suhaila Repetoire ensemble and teaching level I and II classes at the Suhaila Salimpour school of dance.
Next to all these wonderfull qualaties she has developed her own unique style, Modrom (Modern Romany) that she will teach to.

LiteSide Festival with Sharon Kihara

From August 22nd till August 24th there will be the LiteSide Festival in Amsterdam again. A cross-over festival between modern oriental and western european cultures. This year Sharon Kihara will be there to teach and perform in the show and also performing is Charybdis, this years winners of the Shimmy Shake Competition! DJ mps PILOT will play at his new global grooves night "Electro Gypsy", so if you feel like dancing...

Most of you probably already know that we are with 4 Uzumé girls now :)))
The fourfold Uzumé debut was a great succes at our haflah with Sharon and Olivia and at Oriental Dream 2008.

We are very happy to have found Nadiya,
a beautiful and talented dancer from Rotterdam (www.nadiya.nl)
We've been working with her since January 2008 and hope to work with her for a long long time.
Nadiya is also a graphic designer (she designed our Uzumé tops)
and she is -as we speak!- mixing the music for our new dance.........it sounds goooood :)

Coming to America!

36 nights of sleep before we (luckally not for good!) have to wave our sweet and beautifull Tjarda away at the airport...
She is coming to America, to learn and learn and have fun and learn: but-squeezes from Suhaila; fast and furious movements from Unmata; urban lounges from Urban Tribal; and popping & locking from that streetartist (you know, from the last topic with cool video's) and many many other things!
I'm sooo happy for her, cause she will learn such cool things! But I'll be missing my girly curly friend too...! So I'm also a little bit down... snik...snik...snotter...boehoe...
Gooo Tjardaaaaa! We love you and support you from the Netherlands. And please don't forget us...

Oriental Magic IV 25 oktober 2008

Ha Lezers, danseressen, docenten en alle andere vaste bezoekers of nieuwe bezoekers van Oriental Magic,

Op zaterdag 25 oktober is het weer zover: het jaarlijkse evenement voor dansers door dansers: Oriental Magic. De vierde alweer.

Het lijkt nog ver weg, maar de tijd gaat snel en steeds sneller.

We willen niet te laat zijn met het aankondigen van het voorlopige programma, dus, wil je meewerken aan Oriental Magic, wil je een optreden geven of een workshop meldt je dan aan.

Iedereen is welkom. Of het nu je eerste optreden zal zijn of je zoveelste. Of je nu Tribal danst of Fusion, Bellybreak of Baladi en al het mogelijke er tussen in. Laat het zien tijdens Oriental Magic. De grote landelijke (internationale, want we rekenen ook op onze zuiderburen) ontmoetingsdag voor alle liefhebbers van de Oriëntaalse Dans.

Natuurlijk zal er weer een grote bazaar zijn, henna-art, een lekker hapje tussendoor, een info-balie etc. etc. én heel veel mogelijkheid om lekker te dansen voor de gebruikelijke toegangsprijs van Euro 10,-- p.p.

Ook aan de kinderen zal worden gedacht en zij zijn natuurlijk van harte welkom op deze dag voor de hele (dans)familie. Toegang kinderen tot 12 jaar Euro 5,--.

We hebben ruimte voor minstens 15 uur workshops, laat kennis maken met en maak kennis met de vele stijlen die er zijn binnen deze danskunst/sport
Promote je specialiteiten door belangstellenden of belangstellenden in spé er van te laten "proeven".

Demonstreer het tijdens de optreed blokken.

Well, you all know Tjarda, dancer and choreographer from The Uzumé...And you all know she's great in doing these two things (well, she can do more...but anyway) here's the evidence:
Kunstfactor Dans has nominated Tjarda for the encouragement prize 2008!!!!!!!!!
This year for the first time, they are surching for a new, talented, promising and upcoming choregrapher. They will announce the winner on saturday the 17 of may at the final evening of the Festival Dans voor Mei 2008.

So everybody: keep your fingers crossed...

Workshop Drills 'n Zills

Hey Ladies!

As I am guessing; you like to drill the moves until your body can actually do them while you are on the phone with your girlfriend?
Then my Drill / Shimmy workshops might be for u!

On sunday July 6 (13.00 - 14.30) I will teach a workshop on shimmy's with the Suhaila drillin' technique. 1,5 hour butt work-out!
We will do the exersises on the floor, in the circle and with chasse's pas de bouree's and grapevines. And ofcourse more shimmy's to vary. No choreography this time.

After that a workshop on Zills for all level's (15.00 - 16.30). We will look at the underlying basic technique so you can develop you zills-skills at home and combine them with your favorite steps. Lot's of Playing & Dancing.

The workshops will focus on your technique and abilities, not on you personal unique style, so bellydancers as well as tribal fusion dancers will enjoy this!

The workshops are in Utrecht at the Dansvloer.

Programma: van 14.30 tot 16.30 zullen er workshops worden gegeven die vrij kunnen worden bezocht.

"Love you Veil" met Artemisia ( België).

Heb je nog nooit met een sluier gedanst? Probeerde je het al, maar ben je nog niet zeker of het je wel leuk vind? Of dans je integendeel al jaren en is de sluier ook jouw favoriete prop? Artemisia is in België en ver buiten de grenzen gekend voor haar magie met de zijden sluier. In deze workshop deelt ze haar aanpak, visie en... natuurlijk ook haar "trukkendoos". No secrets! Deze workshops is zowel geschikt voor de absolute beginner als voor de gevorderde danseres op zoek naar iets nieuw.
Breng liefst je eigen sluier mee (als je die hebt is een rechthoekige in zijde ideaal), voor beginners zijn er ook uitleenexemplaren voorzien.

1.30-3pm: Flamenco fusion
Exploring true Flamenco gestures and movement
vocabulary to use in any style of belly dance.

3.30pm-5pm: 100% UZUME
In this workshop you will learn an Uzumé-fusion
combination to add to your dance vocabulary.

Schedule Sunday 27th of APRIL 2008:

TIMES CHANGED!!!!

1pm-2.30pm: Old school hip hop fusion
Learn the basic steps of floating, gliding and sliding,
followed by a cool new Fusion combo with HipHop
elements such as popping ‘n locking.

3pm-4.30pm: Floorwork
In this workshop, you will learn some descents to
the floor and what to do while you are down there…
Kneepads are strongly recommended for this workshop.

4.30pm-6pm: Indian flavored fusion
You will learn a combo with some nice poses with arms
and hand gestures.

Fees: £15 per 1.5 hour workshop or £60 for all 5 workshops

Schedule Saturday 26th of APRIL 2008:

1.30-3pm: Flamenco fusion
Exploring true Flamenco gestures and movement
vocabulary to use in any style of belly dance.

3.30pm-5pm: 100% UZUME
In this workshop you will learn an Uzumé-fusion
combination to add to your dance vocabulary.

Schedule Sunday 27th of APRIL 2008:

11am-12.30pm: Old school hip hop fusion
Learn the basic steps of floating, gliding and sliding,
followed by a cool new Fusion combo with HipHop
elements such as popping ‘n locking.

1.30pm-3pm: Floorwork
In this workshop, you will learn some descents to
the floor and what to do while you are down there…
Kneepads are strongly recommended for this workshop.

3.30pm-5pm: Indian flavoured fusion
You will learn a combo with some nice poses with arms
and hand gestures.

Carolena and Megha will be teaching for 3 days, more than 13 hrs during Gathering of The Tribes event in August, 2-4.

The goal of the event is to get tribal dancers from all over the Europe together, share their love for this danceform and create new contacts. Why not just to group together, combine the yearly vacation with a great possibility to dance with Megha and Carolena in "exotic" country like Finland?

The price of the WS is 200 euro - that makes about 15 euro/hour. Or the whole package including training and accommodation for 4 nights in the beautiful environment close to lake, including breakfasts, transportation to the place where the classes are held - and back, only 470 euro. Being comparing the prices I can say it's far more cheaper than any event around this topic in Europe this year. Workshop prices are normally around 20 euro/ hour and accommodation with workshops for the 4 nights can be 769 euro this very day. Don't forget the the bonus each can reach - additional free workshop for the group of 11. Use it to reduce the price from each or to get your own for free.

Good news is that this leaves a lot of space for travelling expenses - and if you can use Ryanair you can even get your flight with the pocket money. Check their site if they have an airport close to you: www.ryanair.com

Ask also group prices from your flight company - they might give some discount as well.

Er zijn nog plekken voor de Fabeldieren Workshop in maart, in Utrecht.
Op 4 woensdagavonden leer je d.m.v. handwerktechnieken een mythisch of zelfverzonnen sprookjesdier maken, die je vervolgens kunt toepassen op bijvoorbeeld je tribal kleding. Ook de handwerktechnieken kun je na deze cursus natuurlijk op allerlei manieren gebruiken.

Hi grils,

Well, as a big fan of the Suhaila technique I am concidering to bring this great teacher over.

I did not do all the math yet but I am guessing that a weekend (15 hours of teaching) would come to cost 300 euro's and a weeklong (30 hours perhaps with optional testing would cost 550 euro's).

Would you be interested in taking this workshop?? Elaborate answers welcome, this is always very helpfull!

The workshop would ofcourse focus on her technique and be stylization free! A lot of hard work and inspiration guaranteed ;)

We are going to get a new website and I am getting my own too...finally, but I would like to know what you would like to see on a website of a dancer or a troupe. For example do you want to know the background of the dancers or not, do you want new pictures or videos updated all the time or are a few nice ones enough :) updates can be found on tribes right? I don't want to get a labyrint of buttons :) So please tell me what you think...I am really interested in your opinions.

Shimmy Shake 2008 - Februar 17th Sugar Factory Amsterdam

Ok...so you cannot register anymore...but it will be a great day to watch all these new cross-over bellydance performances from Holland:

The second Shimmy Shake cross over belly dance competition – this time for amateurs AND professionals - will take place on Sunday 17 February 2008.
Prizes include money (from € 100 up to €350) workshops and master classes.

Crossing belly dance with other dance forms is a new trend that has gained many followers since Shakira hit the stage. Thanks to the success of the first edition in 2007 LiteSide brings you now a second Shimmy Shake! This time with separate categories for amateurs AND professionals. Within each competition category there are chances for solo artists and groups to win.

As well as being a fascinating competition to watch there will also be surprise acts, live music, a bazaar, drinks and food and plenty of opportunity to dance yourself and have fun!! Hosts for the day are Dunya Khayame and Terence Schreurs, there are DJ’s and Derbouka players so come along!

Tickets are available at the door (opening at 13.30) and can be reserved via www.liteside.nl. The day winds up around 19.00.

Registering to take part in the competition (via this website) is possible from 14 December and closes on 28 January. If there are too many candidates at that time we will make the selection of performers who will be chosen to take part on the day.

Farasha is searching information on Tribal Fusion for a speech (spreekbeurt) in her class

My daughter Farasha loved the performances she saw at Oriental magic and Magical Tribal. She tried very hard to follow your workshop. She stood in the front row at Magical tribal and has several Uzumé pictures hanging in her room.

She already belly-danced for her class and gave them a little workshop. February 6 she will have a Speech on Tribal Fusion for her class. Because of sad familly circumstances she did nog have much time to work on it. Most of the information on the internet is English and she is turning 10 in March so everything needs to be translated into Dutch.

We printed all kinds of pieces of material we could find on the internet. Maybe some of you have extra information in Dutch or know links to site with Dutch info on Tribal Fusion.

We hope to see you again in March at Magical Tribal. I promissed to take her to one of your shows in the future.

Great tribal events in 2008?

So... Tjarda, I know you're 'pooped out' (heheh) organizational wise, however, just curious, with the new year coming up:
what can we look forward to?

I know Sharon Kihara is coming (YYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEAAAAAAAAAY), and probably Urban Tribal... and maybe UNMATA again?
Then there's Tribal London and Oriental errr... Magic...
Anything else worth mentioning? Are there any other tribal and not tribal workshops/events you (or others) recommend?

Workshop Butoh for (tribal fusion) belly dancers

About Butoh:

Butoh is Japanese Movement theater, closely related to dance. It is based on the western and eastern philosophy of dance. The most important principle of butoh is that it takes the contents as a starting point, not the shape it eventually receives. This means experience and imagination determine the shape. It keeps on searching for the original impulse of the movement, a process for which it uses the language of the body. To reach this material several basic principles are used to train the body to relax to create space in mind and body. By slowing down mind, body and movement the dancer experiences a greater concentration and a higher level of consciousness. The tranquility and spaces this creates makes it possible to open up to images and impulses from inside and outside what results in the material for improvisation.

Butoh en Tribal Fusion Belly Dance:

Of all belly dance styles tribal fusion belly dance is one of the most tranquil, quite and powerful styles today. It demands technique, vision and inspiration. To meet these demands fusion dancers train in multiple disciplines. In this form butoh is an important source. The common ground between these two art forms consists among others of slowing down movement and the transformation of internal images to external shape without losing the pureness of the emotion/ impuls.
In this workshop you will work on your own dance, movement quality and contents of your dance by deepening your understanding of movement and the connection between the internal and external realities. Truly a unique experience!
The workshop will focus on the following butoh principles:
• Awareness of the current state of the body
• Slowing down movements
• Giving and receiving impulses by manipulation
• Transforming from images and improvisation

Dance Goals for the New Year?

So, what are your New Years resolutions for the upcoming (dance) year?

I'm focusing on my carreer this year, so I'd love to nurture and enjoy myself in my free time and I want my movement study to reflect that.
For me this means keeping a daily yoga and meditation practice in the morning and besides that train some bd techniques if I feel like it. Going to Tjarda's (and Minka's) fun class once a week, and attent some workshops that pique my interest.
All in a very relaxed manner... And supportive of my carreer choices.

And what about you?

Omdat ik weet dat sommigen van jullie geïnteresseerd zijn in fusion, en zelf weleens flamenco dansen:

voor degenen die deze zomer lekker willen dansen, er is een flamencodanscursus in Frankrijk
door Wieneke Pastoor (heb bij haar les gehad en ook de zomercursus een x gedaan en is zeker een aanrader).
Verder dans je dus op live muziek (met flamencogitaristen) die deze cursusweek leren dansbegeleiden,
die samenwerking met muzikanten maakt het extra bijzonder.

Wereld Buikdansdag

Verkondig het nieuws aan 'alle mensen van goede wil' !!

Op zaterdag 10 mei is het WERELD BUIKDANSDAG. Voor meer historische achtergrond-info kan je op mijn tribe terecht.
Laat ons het er hier op houden dat op die dag de buikdanseressen zich voor een goed doel inzetten!!

Er is een evenement in opbouw op de grens tussen Nederland en België.

De opbrengst van Wereld Buikdansdag 2008 zal ten goede komen van NEMA. Dit is een vereniging voor mensen met NEuro Musculaire Aandoeningen.
Bovendien zullen de leden van NEMA gratis van dit spektakel mogen genieten.
Het evenement zal doorgaan in ‘De Kaasboerin’, Eerselseweg 99 te Mol. Deze locatie biedt plaats aan 350 toeschouwers. De nabijheid van de Nederlandse grens (op 200 meter) onderstreept het internationale karakter van het gebeuren.
Inderdaad, het feit dat er op Belgische bodem wordt gedanst, houdt geen enkele beperking in voor wat betreft de nationaliteit van de dansers. Alle beoefenaars van de Oriëntaalse danskunst op onze planeet zijn welkom om deel te nemen.
De deuren gaan open om 14h00.
In de namiddag zal er een soort ‘voorshow’ zijn om de dag op gang te trekken. Ondertussen kunnen Oriëntaalse souks of/en workshops
bezocht worden.
Nadien volgt dan een spetterende avondshow . Gezien het enigszins beperkt aantal zitplaatsen zal dezelfde avondshow tweemaal gepresenteerd worden.
Voor de kleinsten, die aan buikdans nog geen boodschap hebben, is er een grote, afgesloten speeltuin.
De toegangskaarten kosten 10 Euro in voorverkoop en 12 Euro ter plaatse.
Kinderen hebben gratis toegang.

workshop layering technique and finger cymbals

Interested in Layering but you don’t know how to start? Try this workshop with the Suhaila Salimpour approach!

We will start with a vigorous warm up including basic bellydance moves and we will work up to layering exercises. We will work on upper and lower body layering and lower body layering in itself. Finger cymbals are optional during the drills…
At the end the drills are melted together in a combination to improve you transitions.

Hello and Merry Christmas from Berlin :)

I am visiting my friend in Berlin for Christmas and it is even more cold here then in Holland... The city is soooooo beautiful. There is not a big Tribal community in this city yet, but my friend really likes it, she took the geneva-workshops in May and she is a very talented dancer so I am trying to convince her to come and perform at Magical Tribal in March :)

Well anyway...wanna wish you a Merry Christmas with lots of snow...

Well we just had the best time this weekend with Unmata at the Hafla and at the workshops, so we are bringing them back again! The workshops were really great I totally liked the fast and the furious, it is so nice to be pulled out of your own box of dance vocabulary...very inspiring and it makes you want more...and I still have energy left so I think I past the test of a paperdolllll :)

Xtribal jewelry

Hey guys,

Check out http://www.xtribal.com from my Tribe friend Sergio.
He's a jewelry artist born on Easter Island (Paaseiland in de stille oceaan, jawel) and travels around the whole world (I believe he's in Japan at the moment), collecting natural materials like (semi) precious stones, leather, shell, pearls and shark teeth, and using traditional techniques to make them into beautiful 'tribal' jewelry.
I think the jewelry pieces are kind of 'stoer' (anyone know a good English word for 'stoer'?), maybe one day I'll have a necklace shipped over. It's a pity I can't see them in real life.

Workshops Fabeldieren Maken in Utrecht

Hoi allemaal,

Ik host de workshops 'Fabeldieren Maken' van Serena Koot, mijn zusje. Ze is modeontwerpster en stoffenbewerkster.
De workshops vinden plaats in januari/februari en maart 2008, in Utrecht.
Daarin leer je in een aantal woensdagavonden, op stof zelfverzonnen fabeldieren maken d.m.v. verschillende handwerktechnieken.
Als tribal danser kun je ervoor kiezen om de workshops te gebruiken om bijvoorbeeld een tribal belt, bh of andere kostuumstukken te voorzien van je eigen bedachte, mythische sprookjesdieren. Met de geleerde technieken kun je verder thuis zelf aan de slag en allerlei bewerkingen op stof doen. Je hoeft voor de workshops geen handwerkervaring te hebben, maar het mag natuurlijk wel.
We werken in een kleine groep, dus er is veel persoonlijke begeleiding, alles wordt afgestemd op je niveau.
Het lijkt me leuk om een paar van jullie meiden te zien!

The hafla was great!

The hafla last night was great (yes, even with the sound problems sometimes and the somewhat dim lighting and the 'do it yourself' stage)!
I loved performing and had a really good time on stage :).
I also enjoyed seeing all the different tribal (and sometimes not so tribal) styles.
It was very nice to see UNMATA live, and although not my cup of tea (too fast, furious and a bit too American and harsh for my taste), I think those girls have killer technique, energy and attitude and I could really appreciate that.
I also liked seeing your dance to my brother's music for the second time, which seemed to be somewhat different. I could hear the details in the music better and you were also on a much smaller stage, so it looked different.
I also think you've improved since your show in November, good performance!

Good work girls and a big thumbs up for all the organizational work!
