Will Cemetery Become Another Causualty of Development?

For those of you V-towners who don't know much about the city's cemeteries, there's on gem up in Vallejo Heights behind the Sunrise Memorial Cemetery. It's got developers foaming at the mouth to get their hands on it with its sweeping views of East Vallejo and the Napa River and close proximity to the downtown. It's old, it's creepy and it's got at least 100 people buried in it, most in unmarked graves. It is the Old Hillside Cemetery and it may be in danger of becoming a subdivision.

Personally, I find graveyards a peaceful oasis from the busy city streets and find their history fascinating. While I realize some yuppie would be salivating over the view while sipping chardonnay on his/her handsome deck, I find it repulsive that we need yet another cluster of cheaply made tract homes at the expense of Vallejo's history. And, let's not forget the lack of respect for the dead.

Here's the story:

October 8, 2007, Contra Costa Times

Cemetery hopes land sale will give it new life
But first, someone needs to move about 100 bodies from forgotten Hillrise resting place

Staff Writer

Edition: FINAL
Section: News
Page: a6
Dateline: VALLEJO

Article Text:

D.N. Johnson's and Mattie Davis' infant son, who died at birth April 22, 1918, may have to find another final resting place.

So might the remains of many others. In fact, within about six months, about 100 long-dead Vallejoans likely will be unearthed and moved to raise money for another struggling Vallejo cemetery.

Hillside Cemetery, one of Vallejo's oldest pioneer graveyards, lies hidden behind Sunrise Memorial Cemetery, which has also been in disrepair for years, says Sunrise board member Buck Kamphausen. Selling Hillside to developers would raise enough money to save Sunrise, which struggles financially, he said.

The problem is finding those 100 or more bodies, which date back to the early 20th century. Many lie in unmarked graves.

Hillside's difficult-to-access 12 acres offer a commanding view of the Napa River, and is therefore likely marketable, said Kamphausen, who owns several Bay Area cemeteries, including Skyview Memorial Lawn in Vallejo.

He first said about 16 graves have been identified "and no records exist." However, he later said he was surprised to learn the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum's Jim Kern found a record book containing about 100 names of people buried at Hillside.

"That doesn't really change anything about the plan, though it causes a big problem," Kamphausen said. "The cost of disinterment will be way, way high, and there may be no way to locate these people if there's no map."

Pioneer graves are often haphazard and haven't prevented progress in the past, he said.

"People died in wagon trains and they buried them along the way. Only God knows where some of these people are buried," Kamphausen said.

Kern agreed that it is common to move very old graveyards.

"The entire city of San Francisco was built that way," Kern said.

The Hillside Cemetery was founded in 1878, a year before Sunrise, Kamphausen said. It came to be owned by a female doctor who gave it to the boilermakers union after World War II, he said. In 1959, ownership was transferred to Sunrise, and forgotten.

Sunrise was owned by the Masons and Oddfellows organizations and run with endowment money, Kamphausen said. But those organizations dissolved over time, leaving former members to run Sunrise's operation.

Over the years, as Sunrise's endowment dwindled and costs rose, grounds upkeep suffered and the business side fell into disorganization, Kamphausen said.

There's not enough money to keep up the place, he added. For example, he said, Sunrise's endowment fund contains about $600,000 and one industrial-strength lawn mower costs about $20,000.

"It needs roof work, security work. There's a holding pond that needs to be filled and covered; better irrigation is needed. There's a lot of things," Kamphausen said.

Hillside is in much worse shape. It's completely untended and appears entirely abandoned, though several gravestones — some covered in weeds, others listing to one side — are sparsely scattered throughout, usually under trees, Kamphausen said.

No law appears to prevent the site's sale and development, Vallejo City Attorney Fred Soley said. Kevin Flanagan of the state's Consumer Affairs Cemetery and Funeral Bureau, adds that rules governing state-licensed cemeteries don't apply to Hillside, which has no license. If they did, Hillside's owner would be required to try notifying relatives before moving identified remains. And Kamphausen says that's his plan, anyway.

I don't know how many people moved into the unit, but I have seen at least two young mothers going in and out in the last week, along with multiple "guests". That part isn't so bad, they seem nice enough. But they leave the TV on late at night (its 12:15 right now) REALLY LOUD, and it echoes through the alley and amplifies up into my bedroom. Grrrrr.

I have called the police twice in the last 2 nights and got zero response. You dial the police dept and get two choices: hang up and call 911, or leave a message. WTF---leave a message? How are you supposed to report domestic disturbances? Noisy neighbors? Psychotic chihuahuas? When I first moved here, I had to call the police once or twice for noise disturbances, and I actually got a human on the phone who sent a car over to check things out. Is that basic service just gone now? I can't believe there's not a single dispatcher on the police hotline.

Goes along with the whole organic/sustainable movement these days. Anyway, I thought it would be a nice way to share resources and what not with each other...it just drives me batty when fruit trees go to waste because no one picks them...things like that.

I was impressed with the stores cleanliness and organization. The produce department is very nice and even has carpeted floors. I perused the meat dept. as well. It's got some very nice cuts of all the usual types: pork, turkey, chicken, beef. I did not see anything organic nor any goat cheese though. But, there was tolerable booze (beer, wine and hard liquor). The clerk was very polite and there way plenty of room to move around with your cart. If you're looking for basic inexpensive stuff, it's a good alternative to Safeway. It's no Whole Foods, but who can afford to shop there anyway...

Well, I was very please to read in today's Vallejo Times-Herald that B.B. King will be playing RIGHT HERE IN VALLEJO on July 9 at the Solano County Fair (opening night, I believe). For those who have never seen him live, don't pass up this wonderful opportunity, as he is an unparalleled performer. Even better than that (if the Fair follows suit from years past), the concert will be free-just pay to get in! What a deal!

Who says public service can't be rewarding? Here's a little something to make your eyes pop out of your head: a database of the employees of the City of Vallejo who make $100,000 or more per year. A quick glance at this gives you a good idea why the City is struggling to avoid bankruptcy:

http://www.sfgate.com/webdb/vallejo/

It appears that the majority of policemen and firefighters falls into this category thanks to their status as "salaried with overtime", with one PD employee clocking in at $435K (!), more than City Manager Joe Tanner ($317K), more than twice the salary of Police Chief Robert Nichelini at $207,000 per year, and multiple times what the Mayor is paid.

Now, I'm not one to believe public servants should be in the poorhouse--quite the opposite. Look no farther than teachers to see hard working government employees who are getting the shaft...and they have to obtain a college diploma before bending over.

But when you factor in the cost of benefits (roughly a 50% premium on top of benefits in the private sector, and probably significantly more than that in public service), it is outrageously expensive and unsustainable for the City to have this many people in this category.

I'd love to get a little overtime with my "salary"...but no, in the private sector, we don't get a dime for the extra hours. And no handgun, either.

Yes, there's one on Broadway before you get to Raley's, but I went in there once and only could find one guy watering plants who didn't speak English. There's Home Depot, but really folks, that's just contributing to Corporate USA and their cronies, and if I don't *have* to do that, I won't.

So, where does one go for plants and gardening supplies? There's a cute place in Benicia I went to once but it was very expensive and the selection sucked. And of course the one on Broadway with no one to take your money. Then there's Bayside Nursery. Yeah, baby. Go there. It's in American Canyon. That place is great!

Well, after last night, obviously not the cops...

Apparently since the layoffs now when you call the Vallejo PD's main number to talk to the dispatcher to get an officer out to enforce a city ordinance, they ain't answering. You get the usual "push one for this, push eight for that" and so on. When you push "0" for an operator (which isn't even one of the choices on the message), it instructs you to leave a message or go online to fill out a report and to only call 911 if it is a violent crime or an incidence that is happening right now or in the last 10 minutes. So, are we supposed to call 911 for activities going on about town that aren't life-threatening? Apparently not as according to the newspaper. The PD has asked that people only call 911 for emergencies.

I don't know about y'all but I don't have much confidence that I will get service if I leave a message or send a form via internet if someone is doing a deal in front of my house or the neighbors are blaring their karaoke into the wee hours. It's now just a matter of time that criminals will figure out that the cops aren't coming so they can just proceed with their business since no one will be able to call the violation in anymore.

Is this our punishment for the city's inadequacies? Why do we need to suffer because they can't manage their way out of a wet paper bag?

It's time to storm the city council en masse. With all the city taxes everyone pays, the least they can do is hire a freakin' dispatcher at the police station for pete's sake! We're going to the police station today or tomorrow to ask what we are supposed to be doing, so we'll let you know. But still, the city council needs to know our thoughts!

The city council meets every Tuesday: http://www.ci.vallejo.ca.us/GovSite/

Anywho...she is recently moved to Vallejo in the Historical district and she was thinking of moving because she has met no other artists or folks her age she can relate to.

Thinking this was just meant to be...

I convinced her that so many cool people were in the neighborhood, new friends that were waiting to meet her..

so she asked, if I just call you up to have a beer some night that would be Okay.

Yep.

She has my number so I hope she calls. She is a professional musician that plays in a winds trio

So I hope to invite her to Tuesday Pizza or something soon.

GOGGIN’S MUSICAL COMEDY “MESHUGGAH-NUNS” COMES TO VALLEJO

Billed as “Meshuggah-Nuns: The Ecumenical Nunsense,” the sixth musical in the “Nunsense” series will be presented by Vallejo Music Theatre in Vallejo opening February 8 and running four weekends for 12 performances through March 2 at the Fetterly Playhouse for the Arts, 3467 Sonoma Blvd., Suite 10. Friday and Saturday evening performances are set for 8:00 pm curtain and Sunday matinees are set for 2:00 pm curtain. Admission prices are $15 for all seats opening weekend (except February 9 which is VMT’s annual fundraiser “Rock the Boat” dinner-theater gala with all seats at $50). Admission prices for 2nd, 3rd and 4th weekends are $23 general, $20 Seniors/Military and $16 students for Friday and Saturday and $16 all seats for the matinees. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. For information and ticket orders please call 707.649.2787 or order online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/24565.

The production is directed by Michael Manley of Sacramento, Musical Direction by Karen Balabanian of Vallejo and Choreography by Maryse Young of Walnut Creek.

Performers include Elizabeth Mitchell, of Santa Fe, NM, as Sister Mary Paul (Amnesia), Vicki Reza of American Canyon, as Sister Mary Regina, Jeannine Perasso-Kaczmarczyk of Martinez, as Sister Robert Anne and Adele Margrave of Vallejo, as Sister Mary Hubert (the Little Sisters of Hoboken) with Robert Wilson of Vallejo as Howard Liszt, the professional actor who plays the role of Tevye in the play-within-a-play.

“Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical” is over and the Kunkels (the poor family that lives behind Mount St. Helen’s School) have won the lottery. Although they had given their lottery ticket to the Sisters in exchange for some gifts, when it was discovered that the ticket was a winner, the Sisters returned it to the Kunkels. In appreciation the Kunkels have given the Sisters an all-expense-paid trip on the “Faiths of All Nations” Cruise.

After a week at sea the ship runs into a storm and several people become ill, including all of the entertainers: the cast of “Fiddler on the Roof.” All except the actor playing Tevye, that is. The Captain of the ship, knowing of the Sisters’ show biz savvy, requests that the Sisters and Tevye put on a revue. The results: “Meshuggah-Nuns! The Ecumenical Nunsense.”

For the time of your life, call now and reserve your tickets!
My 16 year old kitty, as many of you have heard is not doing well, and I fear he is close to the end of his life. I took him in with the notion that I want to do whatever I can to make him comfortable while he's still here. I have a mixed review.

The staff was very nice, the doctor was thorough and compassionate.

The office itself was NOXIOUS. As soon as I walked in the door, I was bowled over by the smell of multiple animals' urine and associated odors. It was honestly so bad, I considered walking out. But as I needed to have Ricky seen right away, and probably couldn't get another appt today, I caved. I literally felt sick breathing that air, and couldn't imagine how the staff could stand it all day.

I've been to many vets over the course of my kitties' lives, and I don't expect the offices to be as immaculate as a surgeon's table, but my God, this was just unconscionable. I think I will take my other kitties, when needed to another vet.

Carlos Cordero, a 30-year Vallejo resident and longtime community activity, passed away suddenly at home last Thursday. Some of you will know him as the gentleman who owned and lived in the beautiful 1870s Eastlake-style home at the corner of Napa and Georgia streets, I believe he was well-known to everyone at the Zegri compound.

Among other things, Carlos was in large measure responsible for the community projects that gave us the beautiful period lamp posts that run down to intersection of Georgia and Sonoma Blvd, and the sidewalks and walkways to the houses on the East side of Napa street between Georgia and York (right across from the compound). He was an outspoken advocate for the disadvantaged and a frequent presence at City Council, Commission, and community meetings, as well as a founding member of Vallejoans for Open Government (VFOG).

He was also a brilliant and kind gentleman who poured endless hours into maintaining his home and gardening the grounds around it. I think we are a little less without him. More can be found on his life and accomplishments in his obituary at:

I made my first trip in several years to Grocery Outlet (Tennessee and Tuolomne) today at the suggestion of friends who said they have good wine deals and that the store has gotten a lot higher class in the last few years. I was pleasantly surprised at the selection. While it offers mostly off brand Americana-style food, there were some things there that made this hippie happy. They even had goat cheese for .99 for a mini log along with other assorted specialty cheeses. The wine selection was decent. Not the same caliber of Trader Joe's, Cost Plus or Costco, but nonetheless, it appeared to be quite consumable. I bought one bottle of Covey Run, which I've tried before and liked, for $2.99. Of course I got cases of that stuff at the Dollar Tree a couple of years ago but that ship has sailed. And for you organic types I saw several brands (like Newman's Own) of different products such as pasta, soup and salsa.

There's a catch. The people that shop there are–er–uh, well shall we say, rather unappealing. That combined with narrow isles makes the shopping experience less than stellar. However, the good deals (goat cheese, goat cheese, goat cheese!) made me forget about the shrieking children and the guy with personal problems in the line ahead of me. I'm thinking that maybe early in the morning or later in the evening might be a better time to do your shopping. I have a similar issue with the Dollar Tree. Go when the masses are busy watching prime time and the kiddies are asleep. I believe they are open until 9 pm.

Bon Appetit!

Well, I'm in! Everything is moved, lots of stuff is unpacked, and I've had a few days to soak in the "ambience" that is Vallejo.

Its a pretty quiet street for the most part. No road noise at night, beautiful sunrises and sunsets. There are however, some *interesting* neighbors.

On one side of my place is an alley, across from which are some colorful characters. Yesterday morning, a man went to start his car, had some trouble, and henceforth launched into a very loud rant about the motherf***in' crook who f***in' took him for a f***in' ride. I never saw the man, only listened to his diatribe from underneath the hood of his allegedly f***ed car. This repetitive rant, punctuated about 5 or 6 words with the word f***, was interspersed with the ramblings of a female pacing around the car in her pumps and smoking a cigarette at 10am on a Sunday morning. She was apparently trying to convince the fellow under the hood of the car that she loved him more than anyone else and she could do "things" for him. He was not very receptive, and threw the occasional retort back at her about "women who annoy men who already have someone". I tried not to evesdrop, I swear. It just echoed through the alley at such a volume as was hard to ignore. Later in the morning, another man came out his front door on the same corner to yell at his presumed mate about how stupid she was for letting someone f*** up his strawberry milkshake. "How f***in' hard is to make a goddamned strawberry f***in' milkshake?" She was apparently used to this behavior, and seemed to let it slide off her back. without much protest.

On the other side of my place is another house, wherein resides a family of uncertain number. Yesterday afternoon I was interrupted by a child's voice sounding uncannily close to my kitchen window---on the second floor. After a brief investigation I noticed the voice was coming from a boy about 7 years old, up in the tree next to my house. With a rope. Tangled about his waist, his leg, and the tree. His father, or guardian, was busy in the driveway preparing a barbeque, and apparently not at all concerned that the boy might fall out the tree and hang himself. The boy was begging for help to get out the tree, but 'dad' said simply, "you got up there by yourself, you get down by yourself." Perhaps I shouldn't have been so irked by this, but I was really hoping not have a child hanged in front of my house the first week I lived there.

Other than that, its a lovely apartment with incredible views...and I'm so happy to be there! Who needs cable when you have such an interesting neighborhood?

OK, so I'm taking the liberty of telling you about one of the best things Vallejo has to offer: great thrift stores! Everyone here shops at thrift stores regardless of income level, and you can almost always find anything you need from nice name brand clothing to great shoes, to kitchenware, furniture, bikes, electronics, craft /art supplies, you name it.

The best ones are Value Center on Redwood between Sacramento and Sonoma across from Seafood City, and The Thrift Store on Sonoma a little south of Valle Vista Street across from Vallejo Nissan and McDonalds. There are a few others, Goodwill on Tennessee between Amador and Monterey, There's another one on Sonoma near Nations Burgers between Ohio and Alabama I think, and there's two on Broadway. I typically stick to the first one unless I'm on a hunt for something specific that I can't find at the first two.

Also, a quick tip, in old Vallejo (west of 80 south of Valle Vista) the streets that run North-South
(parallel with the water) are all named after Counties, those that run East-West (towards the water) are all named after States.

Danni and I are taking this class, and its amazing! They will be running one or two more six week course and there is room, its great training if for no other reason for you to help yourself and your family. You also have the real chance to help someone else.

LA has a program like this and it was in place for the earthquake in 91(I think that was the year) The teams were able to stop 15 fires, help 78 people that were injured and find over 100 people. The numbers may seem small but because there were able to help these people firefighters, doctors and police were not called away from other issues.

I just thought I would let everyone know what a great program this is and if you were interested to go ahead and get in contact with Capt Cavanaugh.
