In the past week, members of Calgary 9/11 Truth and Montreal 9/11 Truth publicly questioned NDP Leader Jack Layton regarding 9/11 Truth and our movement. I wish to congratulate both groups on their efforts and on the way they conducted themselves!

Layton's comments in Calgary (in a book store) were very encouraging, while his comments in Montreal (before an audience) were disappointing in some respects.

Many of us were offended and may have the urge to confront and condemn him. I and some of us are advising against reacting too strongly and reflexively with Layton at this point. The door appears to be open, and we (Drew Noftle, Doug Brinkman, myself and some others) caution against doing anything that will see that door being slammed shut on us.

I am not an NDP supporter, but let's look on the bright side, Layton twice publicly acknowledged us and that Barrie Zwicker is a friend of his and that they have had conversations about 9/11.

Barrie Zwicker has just released the following statement via e-mail to the grassroots 9/11 Truth Movement in Canada (April 14th, 2008):

"Within time, energy and other constraints, I’ve been working on the legislative front for 9/11Truth for going on four years. Finally we are seeing some movement. Ian and I met Yuki Fujita in Sydney , Australia last month; he said he will support those of us pressing legislators in any country to endorse the call for a new investigation of 9/11.

I’ll be contacting Jack again in the most positive and effective ways I can. I must say that I absolutely believe that in this particular case civility must be the order of the day. Whatever our disappointments with the NDP (who doesn’t have some?), we must consider the spectrum of party policies in this country and be careful not to throw out any babies in a rush to get rid of all bathwater.

Both Jack and Connie IMO can – and should -- be supported, each appropriately. Each is in a different space, with different constituencies, different pressures and different opportunities. One size definitely does not fit all.

As Michael Parenti wrote of JFK’s policies opposed to the CIA and the Pentagon, his refusal to provide air coverage for the Bay of Pigs invasion, his overtures to Castro and Khruschev (and much more): “These things may not have been enough for some on the Left but they were far too much for many on the Right.”

Let us not devour those marching on a path much closer to our direction than the many forces of reaction.

I think there’s reasonable hope for the future, along with reasonable disappointment at how little legislators worldwide have done to date.

Thanks for listening."

I personally would like to add that, that the grassroots 9/11 Truth movement is still very new and young in Canada. While have made great strides in the past year or so and have lots of momentum. To have this amount of recognition is a victory in itself.

Many of us have been at this for a long time, and the untold story of 9/11 has lingered since 2001, so the feelings of frustration are there and I share them, but at this stage, I too urge calm, diplomacy and civility and a measured and articulate response.

Please remember that a March on Ottawa is planned for September 2008 and many are working very hard on that. We hope that it will be well received, at very least by the NDP. With that in mind, please do keep the letters flowing and keep talking to your representatives in Parliament, but I echo Barrie's statement and urge restraint and good judgment when writing to Layton or NDP MPs and candidates. Let's put our best foot forward.

Consider too that popular musician / activist David Rovics turned against us due to the actions of a few people who hounded him zealously and rudely, and this is the risk we run when we become too confrontational.

We also saw this happen with comedian / political commentator Bill Maher.

Change is a process, and it begins with each of us individually. Let's be the change we want to see.

The following is my reply to an e-mail i received yesterday regarding the Zwicker-Layton article. For the benefit of others, i am posting it here:

"In all honesty, i do not hold out a lot of hope for Layton, the NDP or any other mainstream party and have little respect for them and this bogus little system we call "parliamentary democracy". I am not at all taken in by this illusion and was not even originally supportive of the March on Ottawa as you may recall. It is likely an exercise in futility, but i have decided, nonetheless, to get behind it, as it is one of the last things we can do, peacefully and can still do legally. So long as we try, there is still some hope.

I am as angry as anyone about 9/11 and as frustrated as anyone to be 7years into this and only be tossed the occasional crumb by some of these people. Layton's comments in Montreal were unacceptable to me and i will indeed be writing to him about that (as i hope others will), but my response will be diplomatic and factual, and not full of expletives and hate. I am NOT "giving him a pass on this". Because he opened the door, i am choosing to give him the benefit of the doubt, for now.

I am indeed in this movement on behalf of the victims of 9/11 and all others who have died or suffered in this fake war on terror or better stated, war of terror - and, like you, i would love nothing more than for this to end immediately. Realistically however, it won't.

We must indeed bring pressure to bear on those who are (or appear to be) in a position to do something about it, and we are doing that and doing it well. Layton has at least acknowledged us and the issue, so i will give credit where it is due - including to ourselves for what we have accomplished. He is also taking notice of the other politicians and celebrities etc worldwide who are speaking out and feeling pressure to come out more strongly - but should also feel more comfortable addressing what we have all been told is a "taboo" subject, because of them.

Do i think Layton will come out and say "9/11 was an inside job!" in the hallowed halls of parliament? Not bloody likely! Even if he knows it and feels that way, it would be political suicide. Or suicide period. But, with persistent, yet civil and articulation of facts, we will be putting him in a position where neither he nor others can discount and dismiss us as "whackjobs", and hopefully he will (and hopefully sooner than later) make a statement supporting the 9/11 victims (and war victims) and admitting that "9/11 was not sufficiently investigated; there are open questions and contradictions in the official story that require re-examination in a fair, unbiased manner and process in the interest of truth and justice - not politics" (or something like that). Is that not what we want?

Please do not equate civil and articulate dissent with "doing nothing". It has obviously been working. Nor should anyone construe being civil as "being nice for the sake of niceness" nor as "groveling or pandering to the gods". It is not, and that is not what i advocate. It is appealing to the human condition (both the person we are addressing, ourselves, as well as the spectators of the dance) with truth and love, and our dignity intact. We are "engaging" them, and engaging the spirit that is within them (and us) to do the honest and right thing, though they may not be naturally so inclined. We are also ensuring that our message is heard and not rejected out of hand based upon hateful behaviors or words, without hearing what we are actually trying to convey.

We are also ensuring that what we are doing cannot be spun by anyone to be used against us publicly to prevent others from hearing what we have to say.

At the moment, we still have these means at our disposal and should be exercising them. No where did i say to stop doing that, but rather, to step back for a minute and see the bigger picture and what we have accomplished. It is working and we need to continue on, while being careful not to shoot ourselves in the foot.

A door has been opened, even if only slightly. There is dialogue between the NDP and us, and amongst the NDP themselves. Layton admits that! Let's ensure it remains so as we continue to do our street actions, etc and awaken the masses. That will ensure that he cannot retreat.

There is no way that he (or others) will "honestly" be able to avoid the issue unless we give him (them) an excuse to do just that. If we play our cards right and he still tosses it all aside, then he will be exposing himself; his true colours and true allegiances.

Change is not up to them. It is up to us! We must be the change we want to see. They are just there to put a stamp on it on our behalf.

We can choose to live in a better world right now, in our own hearts and minds, regardless of how they choose to act. When we do that, we have already won.

If we are reactionary and allow others to push our buttons, and behave as they would like, or which is useful to them, then we have already lost."
