hello!
I have it in my head that I'd like to sew my own corset. Have any of you ever done it or have any patterns you could recommend? Many thanks!

Re: making your own corset?
Wed, April 18, 2007 - 10:12 AMI hate to rain on your parade but, making a corset is.....one of the most difficult things to do well. If I were you I would find someone who knows how to make them and ask if they would be your corset mentor. This way you will learn the tricks of the trade and.....make a really beautiful one!
I have one friend who is a seamstress who worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company in England, perhaps I could put you two in contact?
Cheers,

Re: making your own corset?
Wed, April 18, 2007 - 12:23 PMya, it's NOT easy, about 32 hrs in general. check out farthingales.com, that's yer esential site.
do a tester first with cheep denim. you can cover your tester if you really want to, or just have a jean corset routine.
there are corset patterns at dressew, look them over before you order anything. and don't bother using plastic bones they don't hold.
good luck -

Re: making your own corset?
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 10:24 AMAbout that making of corsets....
I am now working on my second corset and it is going swimmingly. I am working from Laughing Moon's Dore/Silverado corset pattern and purchased my materials from Farthingales (www.farthingales.on.ca/). I already have 2 commissions!
Originally, I took a corset-making class (3 weeks long) through Mason's. My teacher was Patrice, a costume-designer and all-round amazing teacher. I don't know how frequently he teaches there, but a call to Mason's (on Fraser) might give you the answer.
I wish others well on their corset-making endeavors.
