Tassle Twirling Classes

Hello,

I am trying to organize a very un-traditional birthday gift for my mother's 54th birthday......tassle twirling classes! So I need to find a lovely lady who would be willing (and able) to teach my mom how to twirl those titties! I am offerring $20 for 30 minutes or $30 for 45 minutes. No need to be a professional, just to know how to do it.

Thanks!
Marena

PS. There is a very good chance of further work coming from referrals.....

HoopDance classes - sweet deals and a fundraiser!

Hi everyone! If you haven't seen modern hoop dancing, visit the Images page at http://christahoops.com to see some of my videos. Hooping is hot, and adds spice to burlesque - have you seen the local performers using hoops in their acts? Yummy!

Sweet Fall Deal

There are four weeks left in the Fall weekly classes at the Dance Centre, and spaces are available! Register for four weeks for $60 - that's $15 per class, the same pricing as the EarlyBird discounts for the Winter session. This is a great opportunity to get into hooping, add some sparkle into the grey days of Vancouver in the Fall, and give yourself a break from holiday stress! If you have been curious about hoop classes, this is your chance to try it out at a low price: new students can use my hoops for free during this session!

Mondays 8:30-9:30pm
Nov 24 - Dec 15 $60 for 4 classes

Wednesdays 8:00-9:00pm
Nov 26 - Dec 17 $60 for 4 classes

Early Bird Registration for Winter

November 30 is the final day to register at the Early Bird pricing for Dance Centre weekly classes in the New Year.

Mondays 8:00-9:00pm (note the time change from Fall classes that are currently starting at 8:30pm)
Jan 5 - Apr 27
Earlybird price: $255 for 17 classes

Wednesdays 8:00-9:00pm
Jan 7 - Apr 29
Earlybird price: $255 for 17 classes

Register as a burlesque troupe (or group of friends) of 5 or more students, and save $20 each!

Registration for complete sessions (January - April) will continue through mid December at $275 for 17 classes. If spaces are still available after that point, I will post pricing and dates for four-week segments. Before you register, please take the time to visit the Calendar page at http://christahoops.com to read my cancellation and refund policy.

Hooping for Hunger

My fundraiser for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank has already raised $60 through four hoop orders, thanks to Gail, Natasha, Lindsay and Nicky! This cash donation will become the equivalent of $180 through the bulk-food-buying power of the Food Bank, hooray!

Order a custom hoop between now and December 31, and I will donate $5 to the GVFB. Each custom hoop (starting price is $50) normally includes a $10 credit to be used towards a future class or second hoop. If you would like to support the Food Bank too, let me know and I will convert this credit to cash and make a donation of $15 to help feed individuals and families in the Lower Mainland who are struggling to put healthy food on their tables.

If you are planning to order a hoop as a gift this holiday season, please give me at least two weeks notice! (that would be December 11 for hoops guaranteed to be ready for Dec 25) Cross-Canada shipping is available via Greyhound, but be sure to check out their holiday cut-off dates too! You can check rates online using their calculator - plan for a 2lb hoop in the Oversize catagory, shipping from Vancouver, or let me know if you'd like help figuring that out!

That's all for now! Email me at christahoops@gmail.com to register for classes or order hoops, and we'll make arrangements for either PayPal invoicing or a cash delivery.

Happy Hooping!

Christa

...to join a burlesque group!!

All these ideas running through my head, no stage to execute them!

I know the world is probably a fairly tough one to crack, but if anyone has any ideas (that doesn't involve taking one of those expensive 'become burlesque' courses), please let me know. Performing is something I'd like to aspire to, but even starting out designing or, hell, being a pick-up artist would tickle me pink.

Please let me know if you know of any troupes wanting to take on a totally wicked newbie.

Hi,
I just found this on a diffrent tribe and I thought I should share it.
For those of you fans that don't already know, just before Christmas, Bettie (who is 84 years
old now) was admitted to a hospital, suffering from a combination of pneumonia and a
kidney infection. Bettie has improved slightly but is still unable to speak. In mid-January, she
was moved to a nursing home where she is still receiving a lot of care. Let's all put her in our
thoughts and prayers.

If you would like to send her well-wishes, cards may be sent to the following address and
they will be forwarded along to her.

In the new tribemates thread, there was talk of a workshop. What kinds of things would you expect to get out of it? What would you hope to get out of it? Learning how to put a look together? Or mainly construction of different pieces?

I have been thinking about putting one together...there does seem to be a need. : )

Burlesque in Vancouver

I thought I would post some websites for everyone to check out when they're in the mood to watch some bump and grind. I will update this list more as I have time. Please feel free to add to it as well.

Screaming Chicken
Screaming Chicken theatrical society offers workshops, burlesque performances and more. They have boylesquers in their troupe and have a wonderful fantastical mix of styles.
http://www.screamingchicken.net/calender.htm

Little Woo
Little Woo is a beloved burlesque performer in Vancouver. She performs quite frequently both music, burlesque and you'll be truly blessed if you catch her shadow box performance. Woo also offers classes in burlesque and Spiritual Alchemy. I highly recommend both.
http://www.littlewoo.org/

Sweet Soul
These sassy ladies have it all. You will NOT be disappointed at one of their shows. You can also watch for parties at Doll House Studios, which is the home of Sweet Soul.
http://www.sweetsoul.biz/burlesque.php
http://www.dollhousestudios.com/

Cross'd Lovers
I have had the pleasure to see these little minx's perform a number of times. They're a newer troupe to Vancouver and have some dynamite performers in their midst.
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=124328555

Sneaky Kiki
Kiki is another new person on the scene in Vancouver. I have not seen her perform but I have seen her adverts around town.
http://www.myspace.com/misssneakykiki

Miss Joanie Gyoza
Joanie is a force to be reckoned with. She is currently working hard for the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival Alliance and at performing in her own shows. She is a graduate of Screaming Chicken's Becoming Burlesque course.
http://www.joaniegyoza.org/

Andra Diamond Minx
I have not had the pleasure of formally meeting this lovely performer but I assure you that she is fabulous!
http://www.myspace.com/andra_the_diamond_minx

Blyssful Productions
Burlesque meets clowns meets ---- you have to see them yourself. Their titillating style will get you going to say the least.

Vancouver International Burlesque Festival Alliance

Greetings All,

I writing this as Interim Secretary for the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival Alliance, a newly formed group created by Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society, Sweet Soul Burlesque and representatives of the local Burlesque Community.

As many of you know, Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society and Sweet Soul Burlesque, who previously co-produced the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival, have decided to pass control of the festival to the community it was intended to benefit. After consulting with members of the community, it was decided to form the VIBFA to take over management of the festival.

Everyone in the burlesque/comedy/variety community (including producers, techs, supporters as well as performers) is welcome to become a member of the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival Alliance – you just have to register and pay your $5 yearly dues (you can do this at the Annual General Meeting, details below). Then you can vote in the election of the Board of Directors (which will happen at the same meeting).

For those of you unfamiliar with this kind of organization, it is important to understand that the Board of Directors has a different role than planning or producing the actual festival in detail. The purpose of the Board of Directors is broader:

- To represent the wants and needs of the members

- To ensure the organization’s mandate is fulfilled

- To make general decisions on the direction and policy of the Alliance

- To create and oversee the organizational structure that will be directly responsible for the production of the festival (i.e. hiring the festival’s producers)

For more information on the duties of the board Volunteer BC has a great online guide that can be found here: http://www.vcn.bc.ca/volbc/tools/governance.html.

The VIBFA’s first Annual General Meeting will be held at 8:00pm on J une 27th, 2007 at DollHouse Studios (42 West 8th Ave]). All members and supporters of the burlesque/comedy/variety community are encouraged to attend the meeting and join the organization! Together we can make the festival a truly world class event!

If anyone has any questions, concerns or comments regarding the festival, the VIBFA or the roles and duties of the board, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Norm Elmore
Interim Secretary, VIBFA
norm@screamingchicken.net

Vancouver Burlesque Fest - Re-Organization

Hello Burlesquers and Burlesque lovers,

I received the following in my email inbox over the weekend and thought I should pass it along so that anyone who is interested can attend.

Cheers,
Miss Tabi

_______________________________________________________________________
Hey Folks,

As you may or may not already know, Sweet Soul and Screaming Chicken have decided that it is time to give the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival to the community that it’s intended to benefit. To do this we will be forming an open not-for-profit organization to take ownership of the festival.

To begin the process we will be holding our first meeting this Monday May 21 at 8:00pm at The Doll House - 42 West 8th Ave (between Manitoba and Ontario). The purpose of the meeting will be to decide on the structure and mandate of the new organization. Attached below is the proposed agenda for the meeting with more details.

This first meeting is open to everyone but is primarily intended for those who would like to take a hands-on role in organizing next year’s festival. This meeting will be followed by the organizations first Annual General Meeting to take place in June. Absolutely everyone in the community or with an interest in being involved should plan on attending the AGM. It will be an opportunity for everyone to join the organization and elect our first board of directors who will be responsible for steering the organization of next year’s festival. Hopefully the entire spectrum of the Vancouver burlesque community will be represented in the membership and on the board of directors.

If you are unable to attend the meeting please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to bring any comments and/or concerns to the meeting.

Please pass this message onto anyone who might want to be involved.

Proposed agenda for the first Festival Community meeting:

1) Create Mission Statement
2) Create Constitution
a. To produce an annual performing arts festival showcasing local, national and international artists
3) Establish criteria for membership
a. Open or Selective
b. Dues
c. Flat or Graduated
d. Groups or just individuals
4) Format for board of directors and election thereof
5) Decide on name for organization
6) Set date for first AGM

Hoop Play workshops and classes - Summer 2007

Hallo glorious burlesque dancers! I'm guessing that most of you will have seen hoop dance in a burlesque setting already, but if you want to see more hoop dancing, visit the Images page at http://christahoops.com, and then check out the class and workshop options below!

Hoop Play at the Dance Centre
Tuesdays – All Levels
July 3 – 24 7:00-8:00pm and 8:00-9:00pm
July 31 – Aug 21 8:00-9:00pm only.

$60 for four sessions, $120 for eight, bring your own hoop or buy one for $40, rent one for $5 per session. Drop-ins, if space allows, are $17 per class. Contact me at christahoops@gmail.com to register soon, as these classes have already started to fill up!

Hoop Play at the Roundhouse
Mondays – All Levels
July 9 – Aug 20, 7:30-8:30pm, no class Aug 6
$100 includes a custom hoop to be delivered to the second class, or $60 if you have your own hoop. $12 drop-ins with your own hoop, or $17 to drop-in and rent a hoop.
** these classes filled quickly last year, so drop-ins are not guaranteed. First come-first served, register through the Roundhouse at http://roundhouse.ca or by phone at 604 713 1800

Hoop Play Workshops at the Dance Centre
These workshops are designed for hoopers with some previous experience. Tips and techniques for each specific area of hooping will take us through a challenging and fun afternoon! $30 with your own hoop, $35 if you need to rent a hoop, register with me at christahoops@gmail.com

Sunday July 8 3:30-5:00pm
Off-body – vertical and horizontal hand hooping, skips and jumps, body stalls, and more! You may wish to bring along a second, lightweight hoop (kiddie hoops are good for many of these moves) OR start practicing your hand hooping now so your hands have time to build up resistance to the pressure of the hoops!

Sunday July 22 3:30-5:00pm
Choreography – dramatic beginnings and endings, tempo matching, playing with different music themes, linking moves together with smooth transitions, and more! The class will include time to develop your own short choreographed piece, either alone or working with a partner. This is a great session for anyone interested in performing with us at Illuminares! Bring the hoop you plan to perform with, and if you’d like to test out a potential costume for hoop-ability, bring that too!

Sunday Aug 5 3:30-5:00pm
On-body – working with the hoop at your hips, knees, chest, shoulders, both horizontal and angle hooping. If you have more than one hoop, bring your favourite AND another that is as large as possible – having a slower hoop will help with many of these moves.

Hoop Shop
If you need a new hoop for summer, this is the time to order! I will be quite busy through the second half of June, and may not be able to make hoops with my usual turnaround time, but the end of May and beginning of June are relatively quiet and hoop orders will be filled quickly. Visit the HoopShop page at http://christahoops.com for prices and decoration options!

Thanks for reading!

Hello lovelies,
Just letting you all know that Sneaky Kiki burlesque will be having our debut show as a troup tonight at the Capris night club on Granville at 10:00. It is an army theme, a very sassy satire, operation:make love not war, instead of dropping bombs we are dropping bombshells! and tickets are cheeper if you dress up, so bust out your camo print and military inspired outfits and come on down.

Hi,
recently on March 9th Girls On Top had a show for the c.d. release party of Scatterheart at the media club, we danced in between band performances. We love scatterheart and are regular performers at their Elastic Cabaret shows. However, on March 9th there was serious issue of disrespect from a different band performing that night. Mongoose form East Van. was playing after us, they began by doing their drum sound check while Madam Rogue Raylee was dancing! I mean drumming right over top of her song! Then when two other dancers and myself took the stage the bass played did his sound check right in the middle of our performance. Needless to say we felt disrespected but we assumed they were just armatures who had no idea how dance performances work. Anyways this slight benefit of the doubt was completely abandoned as they got on the mic and said, "I hate burlesque anyways, I don't give a fuck" We were so insulted and disrespected. We were performing that night to raise money for women's shelters. Not only did they disrespect us and burlesque in general, but also all the charities we raise money for and the disenfranchised women we support. Scatterheart was deeply embarrassed nd talked to the band about it, (we love you Jesse) but I thought I should issue a warning to all Vancouver Burlesque dancers to NEVER do an event that this band is playing at.

Mardi Gras Rock n' Burlesque Show This Saturday Feb 17

The Mardi Gras event of the season...
Don't miss it!

THE HEFE CD RELEASE MARDI GRAS EXTRAVAGANZA
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 17, 2007

You are cordially invited to a Rock Mardis Gras party on Saturday, Feb 17th, at Pub 340, featuring HEFE's CD release party, with The Notes From Underground and the Cross'd Lovers Burlesque Dancers.

Rock'n'Roll and Burlesque Dancers!!! What's not to love?

The Notes start the show around 10pm.
Get there in time because, (a) the Notes are a long time favourite Vancouver indie band and (b) you don't want to be stuck outside on line. Last time there was a Mardi Gras show here, we couldn't get everyone in.
So come early, stay late, beat the lineup!

HEFE CD's will be available at the show where we'll be performing all the cd's songs plus a few special gems for all the party people.

The Extravaganza will feature:
Burlesque Dancers!
A Parade!
Mayhem!

Earn some Beads!
Don some Masks!
Strut your stuff at the end of the night for our Costume & Dance contests!
Grab a CD!

And as if that wasn't enough: the announcement of our signature drink... the HEFE shot.

We wanted it to be something nasty, down and dirty; we found it.
HEFE encourages you to dress up, get crazy, and bring swarms of friends. Don't worry beads will be readily available. HEFE loves you.

love,
your HEFE pals

ONCE AGAIN...ALL TOGETHER NOW...

They're tickled to have someone from our community on board, and would love to have a few more!

(I wasn't quite as nervous when I found out some of the ex-dancers who will be performing won't be getting completely naked)
