Hey all you Canadian Hoopers!
We are indeed coming to Vancouver, and could not be more excited. We will be arriving Wednesday June 20th and will teach the First Steps workshop that evening, from 7pm to 10pm, in the Birmingham Studio, 3rd Floor (hopefully y'all know where that is!). Then on Thursday, June 21st, we will teach the next-level Warrior Path workshop, from 6:30pm to 10pm, in the Kraul Studio, 4th Floor (again, hope you know where you are more than we do).
The First Steps workshop will be $60 (slightly lowered rate because we have only 3 hours instead of 3 1/2--also, if you have taken First Steps before, the cost is only $50) and $50 for the Warrior Path workshop (for which you must have already taken First Steps).
We are really stoked to meet everybody! If you are interested in signing up for the workshops, send me a tribe message or email me at thehooppath@gmail.com (so I can get a mailing list going). Below are the workshop descriptions as well as some feedback we've gotten so far.
pe*A*ce,
Bax
The Hoop Path: "First Steps"
This 3 1/2-hour intensive will introduce you to the inspiring myths and powerful metaphors of The Hoop Path, a spiritual approach to hoopdance that has slowly built itself out of Jonathan Baxter's years of daily Hoop Practice. Bax's teaching incorporates prayerful guidance and unique storytelling as well as the straightforward breaking down of moves and practice of new techniques. This workshop is for those of us who already feel a connection with Hooping that goes far deeper than pure fitness, or for those hoopers who yearn to deepen and expand their Practice into subtler levels of awareness and grace. Together we will define and explore Hoop Path terms such as: pe*A*ce, Ritmo, One Tree/Two Tree, and Two Birds; as well as established techniques such as Reversing, Breaking, Paddling and Angle Hooping.
Hoop Path Workshop II: "The Warrior Path"
In this workshop we will explore the "Warrior Style" aspect of the Hoop Path, focusing on off-the-core techniques such as Point, Swing, and Samurai. This workshop is geared towards the hooper who has established a regular Practice and wishes to challenge her/himself and expand into new expressive territory. Since there will be much more active supporting of the hoop with the hands and wrists, a lighter hoop of a smaller diameter would work best for many of the exercises in this workshop. Bax will expound a bit on the Hoop Path Story, introducing new characters to inspire our inner Warrior.
**Here’s some of the feedback we’ve gotten on our trips to Cali and the Pacific Northwest:
“Baxter's work is absolutely mindblowing. I've learned enough in his 3 workshops to practice for a year and more... he is a gifted teacher who shares the art of hoopdance in a unique way. Anyone devoted to the hoop shouldn't miss out on this rare opportunity to study with a true master.”
---Christabel, aka Hoopgirl, San Francisco
“For any hoopers who are hesitating or are undecided, I encourage you to give this workshop a try. I have been hooping for less than a year, and I learned SO much from Baxter in a very short amount of time. He is a sincere and inspiring teacher, and he is an incredible hooper. Taking this class made me see hooping in a completely different way. It's no longer just a fun activity full of tricks - hooping can be so much more.
Like Christabel, I wish I could fly down to LA to take this workshop again!”
---Natasha, aka Silverstar, San Francisco
“That was really fun, great sharing of a wonderful story, and lots of things to challenge me in my personal practice. Thank you, Bax!”
--Christa, aka Xta, Vancouver BC
“The class was wonderful. I’ve been working on the opposite current. Its nice to be reinspired to hoop more!”
--Betsy Rose, Seattle
“Thank you for coming, Baxter. That workshop changed my life!”
--Ilana, Los Angeles

Re: The Hoop Path comes to Vancouver 6/20 and 6/21
Tue, May 8, 2007 - 2:36 PMso, out of curiosity...
would it be feasible for someone who has only been hooping for a few months to take both workshops in one weekend, or would it be possibly overwhelming?
:) -

Re: The Hoop Path comes to Vancouver 6/20 and 6/21
Tue, May 8, 2007 - 3:15 PMPersonally, I think you'd be fine, Lola... just start training for the AMOUNT of hooping you'll be doing!
BTW, folks, I just clarified with Baxter that those registration fees are figured for US dollars, so be aware of having to accommodate the currency change when you arrange payment with him!

Re: The Hoop Path comes to Vancouver 6/20 and 6/21
Tue, May 8, 2007 - 3:18 PMI think "The Warrior Path" could be a little intense for the newbie hooper, but not impossible. I think it would be fine as long as you are not easily frustrated. The idea behind discounting the second workshop is to encourage Students to take both. I imagine most everyone who is in "The Warrior Path" will have taken "First Steps" the night before.
I will post an FAQ type deal later today.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask.
Hope to see you,
Baxter

Ten things we have learned that you might want to know
Thu, May 10, 2007 - 9:13 AMHere is a little list of things we have learned from our first tour.
Here are some other things we have learned:
1. Students are encouraged to bring pads and pens with which to take notes. We do not provide a printed text, so if you are the sort that likes to have things written down, then by all means, we encourage you. If you should forget, we will have pads available.
2. This workshop is rigorous. We hoop a lot. Though there is a long opening talk, we will easily hoop for two solid hours. Please come prepared with water, snacks, redbull (hooper crack), or whatever else. (I don't endorse redbull, I'm only trying to be funny here.)
3. My workshops are not "move swaps." At least, not by design. We work on developing a Hoop Practice and opening oneself up to winds of undiscovered expression. I expected to feel friction with this, but I think not having a list of moves to work through actually relaxed the students who came.
4. We don't actually hoop naked. Sorry. That was just a joke.
5. This didn't come up in PacNW, but we do not allow video taping.
6. The "First Steps" workshop emphasizes the Core and the Current. We will not get into Samurai Hooping until "The Warrior Path" workshop.
7. You do not need to have a super small hoop for the "First Steps" workshop.
8. This is a BYOH event.
PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING:
Many have asked about what level of hooping skill is required to attend the workshop. This has proved to be a tough question to answer. I would suggest that those interested in coming should have some flight time with hooping in their Second Current, at least, at the waist level. For those of you who are unfamiliar, this means that you should be able to hoop both directions. You do not need to be fluent in both, but some experience in both will make for a much better workshop for you. Know also that we may go over things which are beyond what you can currently do. There is no way of getting around this. If you can afford yourself some patience, this doesn't have to be frustrating. Honestly, I think is the "newbie" hooper who may have the most to gain from the approach we take to Hoop Practice.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Ten things we have learned that you might want to know
Fri, May 11, 2007 - 7:20 PMOR, come to the Carrboro Hoop Path pilgrimage! Seriously. We've been talking about it for months, but it's looking like it will finally take place in (probably) mid-July. It's a long distance to travel, but it should be a beautiful and memorable gathering. Our local tribe members have already generously volunteered to host pilgrims in their homes! Or yards, if you're a camper at heart. Hoping that we can announce a solid date in the next few days...we're waiting to hear back about the availability of the largest hoopable space we know of so we can have a couple of classes/workshops. We'll also do a hoop jam, a Hoop Path fire (many past fires are chronicled in the Hoop Path photo gallery), as well as a drum circle and other fun things!
(Y'all are now afraid I'm going to say we'll be bobbing for apples and playing Capture the Flag too).
Really, though, keep it in mind if you might be interested. We'd love to have you! -

Re: Ten things we have learned that you might want to know
Fri, May 11, 2007 - 9:47 PM<laugh> Ann, we have another Vancouver tribe called Van-Tag-onists.. where we have plans to play tag, Capture the Flag, Sardines, etc... sounds like fun to me!

Re: Ten things we have learned that you might want to know
Sun, June 10, 2007 - 4:29 PMHI Gabrielle - you'll need to contact Baxter himself about space, and whether or not you'll be able to join in last-minute. He's doing the registration himself, so while I've heard recently that it is getting pretty close to being full, I'm not sure where it is right now!
Hope you can make it.. if not, try to come down for the Canada Day weekend, and hoop with us at the Jazz Fest outdoor (free!) stage :)

Wed, June 13, 2007 - 2:26 PMRight on!!
Darn, I'm heading out of town on Friday morning, to go visit my family for my sister's birthday.. but hopefully y'all can stick around for the Saturday Circus, and come meet the rest of our amazing crowd of hoopers and skill-toy fanatics!

Re: Ten things we have learned that you might want to know
Wed, June 13, 2007 - 3:45 PMWay cool... sorry I'm going to be away for the weekend, but it will be cool hooping with you at the workshops.
Mmm... we should make some group plans for dinner. Bax, are the same folks doing both Wednesday and Thursday, or are there significant differences? Questioning doing one celebratory outing or two... :) A handful of us often stop at the Starbucks in the next block after class, but there are a TON of restaurants, all cuisines, many price ranges, within easy strolling distance...
Oh, and my major tour-guide suggestion for those of you coming into town would be to spend some time on Thursday at Granville Island - giant fresh market, good bakeries, etc, and tons of artist studios and shops tucked in a nice strolling area. - nice to look at, even if you're not shopping!

Re: Ten things we have learned that you might want to know
Wed, June 13, 2007 - 8:33 PMI'm up for whatever. Almost everyone is signed up for both nights. I would love to kick it a little after and between the shops. It will would be nice if we could get to know each other more.

Re: Ten things we have learned that you might want to know
Wed, June 13, 2007 - 11:13 PMJa.. I'm sad that Thursday daytime is one of only two days during the week that I have a day-job, so I won't be able to play daytime tour guide :( Good news is that they're letting me sneak off early so I can get to the workshop on time...
Ah well... I'm enough of a night-owl that I can take anyone for a city stroll on either night, if we still have energy left!

Thu, June 14, 2007 - 6:38 AMThat sounds like a great idea. I'm up for whatever after the workshop. I guess I can live without my starbucks moccha for once :-) -

Re: Ten things we have learned that you might want to know
Thu, June 14, 2007 - 10:02 AMOh... I just realized we'll be missing (or delaying) our Thursday night burn.. but HEY! The Kits Beach patrol is off duty at 11.. by the time we get down there.... *grin* Oh, but that would be super-late for you, Heather... not good for Teach to fall asleep the next day!

Re: The Hoop Path comes to Vancouver 6/20 and 6/21
Tue, June 19, 2007 - 7:19 PMHey Xta I think me and my friend will need some help getting there. We are taking a cab from the airport because we get into town like an hour before the workshop. So best directions to give the cab driver would be great.
Thank you,

Re: The Hoop Path comes to Vancouver 6/20 and 6/21
Tue, June 19, 2007 - 11:22 PMHi Geoff - the drive is really straightforward from the airport, ask the cab driver to take Granville or Oak,but avoid Cambie like the plague (he'll prob know this anyways...) - once he gets in around Granville and 16th ave, he might take a right turn to go down Hemlock (parallels Granville) to avoid the stoplights and shopping district from 16th to the Granville Bridge - this is fine, but not a biggie either way, at that point you're less than 10 min from the studio.
Once he's on the bridge, he'll either stay in the middle lanes (and wind up on Granville) or head into the right-hand off-ramp (and wind up on Seymour) - either is fine, 'cause the Dance Centre is located between them. Davie St is the second cross street from the bridge (after Drake), and the Dance Centre is on the far corner of Davie and Granville - big glass-sided building, the entrance is on Davie.
Heh.. I'm tempted to draw you a picture now :) Hopefully that will give you landmarks, but it really is a simple place for cabbies - Davie and Granville are both major streets in the downtown core!
If you guys are hungry and you have a couple minutes to spare, there's a great pizza-slice place up the block on Davie, on the other side of Granville St - called Numero Uno, $1.50 a slice! Highly recommended :)
When you get IN to the Dance Centre, sign in at the front desk and they'll tell you which floor we're on... hm, what else? Women's washroom (including showers) on the third floor, men's on the fourth ( I assume they have showers, but I don't really know..).. pop/water machine on the fifth, along with a computer that may or may not have a working mouse so you can check your email..
Heh, okay, I'll stop now :) See you soon!
