And for sure that was me !!

Any event at Horning's Hideout brings out loads of hoopers. Be it "The String Cheese Incident" or the String Summit (hosted by Yonder Mountain String Band).

It's such a cool community and I usually throw down about 14 hoops, on the dance floor, on Thursday evening. The hoops are in play all weekend and I have only ever lost one. Such is the community at HH. Yeah for the west coast hippie hoopers !!

The video you posted was from Sunday afternoon, and it's a great reflection of what happens at Horning's.

Sorry I missed your Trout Lake sessions but I was out of province for most of the summer.

Hardly ever check in on this tribe group as most of th Vancouver jamband crowd has ended up on Facebook. But I will continue to check in from time to time. Hope our paths cross again.

Same sentiments to ya'll Vancouver hoopers.

FLOWMOTION

Show starts at 10:15 pm - 2 FULL SETS!!

Those of you who know... know. For those of you that don't... trust me. It'll be $15.00 of very well spent money! The boys have been growing, writing, touring, performing & honing their craft to a fine, well-oiled, melodic jam-rock machine... all the while gathering steam South of the border after a SMOKING performance to headline their 9th Annual Summer Meltdown Festival in Darrington, WA this past August.

Read about some of their exploits from a couple of music critics that seem to be jumping on board with much enthusiasm!

Dennis Cook - JAMBASE. com - Great American Music Hall (San Francisco, CA) review - This is primo melodic rock grounded in rhythms that draw from Latin rock and juke joint blues to create expansive, dexterous groove music with hair on its chest and a quick step. This Seattle band has garnered a large, fervent following in the Pacific Northwest (including their annual Summer Meltdown Festival), and there's gleeful rock gusto to what they do, and much like PMW, they seem ripe for wider discovery. On some surface level, I can see Phish lovers falling for Flowmotion, though lead singer-guitarist Josh Clauson is a stronger, more passionate singer than anyone in that famous quartet. This set ebbed and flowed from balls-out chargers to quite tender ballads, different sections showing Southern rock, Pink Floyd and other classic FM radio influences given a morphing, graceful turn of their own. High energy, charismatic performers and excellent, limber musicians, Flowmotion deserve an audience well beyond Washington State."

Dennis Cook - JAMBASE. com - Summer Meltdown Festival (Darrington, WA) review - "They are a rock band in the open-minded mold of the 1970s, able to synthesize distinctly funky, jazzy elements into a tough whole. Listening side stage much of the set, watching them closely as they plied their trade with broad, mischievous grins, I was reminded of my childhood days listening to AM radio, where Al Green sat comfortably next to Steely Dan, Charlie Rich, Hall & Oates, Springsteen and Bob Marley – all inflections of broadminded groove, thoughtfully textured and possessed of a craftsmanship and intelligence almost entirely absent from today's mainstream."

Mike Bookey - The Source Weekly (Bend, OR) - It’s been about nine months since they last dropped into Bend, but Seattle’s Flowmotion is returning once again for another high-energy, multi-genre rock and roll explosion.
It’s been fun to watch Flowmotion grow over the past two-plus years of playing in Bend. A jam-packed show at the Annex in late 2007 (which was capped with a cover of Zeppelin’s “The Song Remains the Same”) led to a laser-lighted 4 Peaks preview show, which then brought them to the actual 4 Peaks main stage. At that performance, the band woke up the campgrounds, bringing the music fans to the stage early for an early afternoon performance that showcased how big the band’s sound can spread when it has the room.

Fronted by the smooth yet strong vocals and guitar of Josh Clauson and further fueled by the lead guitar of RL Heyer, Flowmotion plays quintessentially honest rock and roll, but can get funky when needed. The band’s new single, “How I Know” is a perfect example of the band’s evolution from jam band to all-encompassing rock act.

Jackie Devereaux - Desert Local News - Joshua Tree Music Festival review - http://www.flowmotion.net/press_archive/joshua_tree.html

SPREAD THE WORD... IT'S TIME TO DROP IN THE FLOW AGAIN!!!!

Wanted to mention an AWESOME sounding workshop happening this weekend called "Hoop Flair." It's being put on by the super nice ladies of Pixie Hoops (from Victoria) and I'm going to check it out for sure!

- xo Laura

THE DETAILS:
Friday August 21st
Brittania Community Center - East Side Family Place
6:30-8:30pm

This is an amazing opportunity to learn from the Best of the Best!!
Featuring master instructor Rebecca Halls of iHOOPu visiting BC from Montreal!

Beka is certified yoga instructor & accredited bfa in choreography & contemporary dance performance from Concordia University. iHoopu has performed at hundreds of events across Canada, the USA & Mexico. Leading the hooping revolution while traveling the globe to study, perform, teach & share all aspects of the HOOP! All levels of hoopers welcome to register.

Now that you have the technical elements of hooping down, you are ready to bring some Flair to your hoop practice. Whatever your level, in this workshop you will learn to spice up the hoop moves you already know with Hoop Flair; bring some sass to your spin, add dance elements to your art form and find the individuality that only you carry inside the hoop.

Pixie wishes,
Natasha

For those of you who did his workshop last time, come back for more! For those of you who wanted to but couldn't, this is your chance! Anyone who doesn't know who Baxter is, check out http://hooppath.com and 'jbaxter' on YouTube.

His style of hooping, and the wonderful storytelling he uses in his teaching, have made Baxter and the Hoop Path stand out in the hooping community. Flow, grace, power, speed.. overall, a stunning amount of control and a deeper connection with the hoop itself... THIS is what you will take away from a workshop!

So, the question is, WHEN would you like the workshop to be offered? I believe he normally aims for 3 hour blocks, two days in a row for the two levels.

Please answer in this format, so I can hopefully find a time that wil work for as many people as possible:

***

I am interested in attending a workshop
Monday - 4-10pm
Tuesday - 7-10pm
Wednesday - not available
Thursday - 4-7pm
Friday - anytime
Saturday - anytime
Sunday - anytime before 4pm

I am not available July 16-18.

If a workshop is offered during these times, I (WILL be there/ probably will attend/ might attend/ want to attend but may need a scholarship)

****
To be clear, all of those times and away-dates are just things that I made up. Please reply with YOUR available time range, any dates that you're unavailable, and the level of interest you have in attending!

I've been to three of Baxter's workshops so far, and I will be attending these ones too... and as much hooping as I do, and teach, I still come away with something new to work on every time!

Come play!

it's going to be a fun weekend! a lot of people are out of town and it doesn't seem like we're going to have the sun we've been getting accustomed to, but i'm planning to be at Trout Lake with music and hoops, as long as it isn't pouring - 1/ 1:30ish to 3 or 4ish, under the trees between the market/ parking lot and the lake. i will probably be hanging around the park in the evening, too, celebrating the solstice with friends. there may be some fire spinning after dark.

also this weekend is the Dragon Boat Festival near Science World. there will be live music at the world beat stage from 11am to 6:30 or 7pm. i probably won't make it there on saturday, but hope to make it out on sunday for Delhi to Dublin at 3:30pm and Vanabaso at 5pm.
here is the music schedule:
Sunday afternoon I'll be hooping at the opening for the Golden Ears bridge, with hoops to share and moves to teach! Look for me from 2:30 onwards, bouncing between the south and central stages!

Sunday night, if I can still move, I'm planning to hit the Fire Jam at Trout Lake - sundown (or earlier, for some non-fire types) until we get tired! 13th ave at Lakewood is a good entrance to the park that will bring you quite close to the gravel pit and dock that frame our burn space!

(Survey participants will be entered in a draw to win a credit towards classes or hoops!)
ChristaHoops classes

Mondays in May have been cancelled due to low registration again, and I'd love to see June classes run! I have two special offers for you:

1 - First timer discount: For anyone who hasn't tried one of my classes at the Dance Centre, pay only $10 drop-in for your first class! (this includes use of my hoops, just bring yourself and exact change, please!)

2 - Spread-the-word discount: refer a friend or have them mention your name when they register for a 4-week session, and I'll give YOU a $10 credit towards your next class registration or private, or $5 off your next two drop-ins. (No limits - the more new students you refer, the more credit you receive! Credits can be redeemed for up to 50% of any ChristaHoops class registration fee [Dance Centre classes only, these credits cannot be applied to Roundhouse workshops])

These offers are good for both Monday and Wednesday classes. Additional incentive to fill Monday classes in June: Register by April 25 for only $60 for four weeks (no class June 22)!

Do you have any ideas for helping me spread the word about my Hoop Play classes? Let me know!

Details about all my classes and workshops can be found on the Calendar page at http://christahoops.com
Hoop Path Workshops

Bax has confirmed the dates for his visit to Vancouver: the weekend of July 11 and 12, 2009! Stay tuned for times and pricing information, but do keep these dates free for some of the most amazing, intensive and focused hooping of your life! Visit Jonathan Baxter's YouTube channel to see some of his amazing hoop work:
http://www.youtube.com/user/jlbaxter

I'll be heading to Carborro, NC to attend the annual Hoop Path retreat in June, and I can't wait for a weekend of hooping with this wonderful community!

Saturday Circus resumes this week!

The sun is shining, and I want to play! I had a bit of outdoor hooping last weekend on the pool deck at UBC, but I'm ready for more socializing! Please join me this Saturday, 2-4pmish outside the Vancouver Art Gallery. I haven't been by to check on the state of construction around our normal practice space near the Gallery Cafe steps, but we'll find somewhere nearby to play - just do a loop of the building until you find us! I'll have music and extra hoops to share, along with some sunscreen for those early-season freckles! Weekly updates on who is heading out to the Circus can be found in the Vancouver Hoopers tribe on http://tribe.net and in the Saturday Circus group on Facebook.

More video clips for you, one is of CTV's coverage of the Saturday Circus a couple years ago, and the other is a more casual clip that includes more of the non-hoopers that usually come out to play! Bring your partners and kids to try out hooping, juggling and more!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xRZE-nYjTw

(if you're curious about those things that I'm twirling in the second video, they are called "poi", and David of http://nightanddaydance.com teaches poi classes and privates locally, check out the 'poi and fire' link on their site!)

And finally, the survey!

Many of you have requested drop-in cards or another arrangement that would let you come to hoop classes through the warm months without committing to a weekly schedule, and I'd love to know which version would suit you best:

Option 1: A prepaid card loaded with a specific number of discounted drop-ins (5? 8? 10?) to be used within a certain time frame (four months?). Any outstanding drop-ins would be added onto the next prepaid card (thanks to Open Door Yoga for this concept!) I would hold pre-paid cards so you don't to worry about losing yours! Prepaid cards could be shared, ie two people could use two discounted drop-ins from the same card. Using a prepaid card would also allow you to reserve a space in class if you gave at least 12 hours advance notice.

Option 2: A reward card that is marked each time you pay a full-price drop-in, and when the card is full (8?), your next drop-in is free! Reward cards would remain in your care and work like cash (lost cards would not be replaced), and would only be valid for one person's use (though the free drop-in could be gifted to someone else)

Option 3: Another suggestion? I'd love to hear it!

Please get back to me via email (christahoops@gmail.com) about the option you'd be most interested in, and how likely you would be to use it this summer if I had it in place. All responders will be entered into a draw, and for every 10 responders, I'll add a prize of a $20 credit!

Happy windy spring!

Hidden beneath the bows of the Northwest evergreens is found Flowmotion, one of Seattle's most distinctly diverse rock bands. This is an act that fails to fall into an easily packaged genre, succeeds in defying stereotypes, and throws one hell of a party no matter what city, town or festival the five-piece band happens to land in.

Flowmotion is a name well known in the Seattle live music scene and becoming increasingly familiar up and down the West Coast, yet largely unheard of throughout much of the country. The band has managed to remain in the "best-kept-secret" vault of the live music scene, all the while honing a live show that often exceeds the size of the stage they might find themselves performing on. A Flowmotion show is a swooping ride through the fingers of rock fueled solely on the expert musicianship of its five parts, producing a sound that's unmistakably huge.

The Flowmotion name has been in existence since 2001 under the creative eye of founder, guitarist and lead vocalist Josh Clauson - the only member of the band's original lineup. At a time when the future of Flowmotion was uncertain, the front man found himself at a show featuring a Seattle-based (via Spokane) jazz fusion outfit called BeeCraft, he knew he'd found the sound he'd been searching for before the band even finished its set. It was only a matter of time before Clauson would envelope the entirety of BeeCraft into the Flowmotion lineup.

The most recent addition to the Flowmotion lineup came last year in the form of guitarist RL Heyer, who brought to the already talented band an arsenal of rock licks. While Flowmotion always had a multi-genre attack hidden in its quiver, Heyer's skill set allows the band to transition from downright booty shaking funk to fist-pumping rock before the packed dance floor knows what hit them. When their show is in full swing, Clauson and Heyer's guitars converse pleasantly and aggressively, often escalating to arena rock levels while at the same time creating the sort of soundscapes typically reserved for the likes of Pink Floyd.

It's nearly impossible to mention the name Flowmotion in the Pacific Northwest without bringing forth a mention of Summer Meltdown, the annual music and camping festival the band has hosted for nearly a decade. As the years have slipped by, the band has watched the annual gathering grow from a backyard bash to one of the region's most well-attended summer festivals - a celebration that's expected to bring as many as 4,000 revelers to the foothills of the Cascade Mountains this summer. While Flowmotion has always been the headliner at the festival, they've also shared the stage with national bands including Bill Frisell, Vince Herman, Garaj Mahal, Zilla, Bassnectar, Yard Dogs Road Show. 2008's lineup is the strongest to date featuring Tea Leaf Green, Buckethead, Everyone Orchestra, Blue Turtle Seduction, On the One, Delta Nove and 20 other of the Northwest's favorite regional bands.

There are many music fans in the Northwest and beyond who will remember Flowmotion from their years of touring and festival appearances and expect the same band as they heard in the early part of this decade. While the spirit around which Clauson built the band is very much alive, the sound has evolved with Flowmotion incorporating more rock edginess without forgetting the dance floor grooves that have brought them this far. Whereas Clauson previously authored most of the Flowmotion repertoire, songwriting duties have since been delegated amongst the band resulting in set lists that skip across the spectrum reminding listeners of Zeppelin at some moments and Parliament at others.

It's been a steady climb for Flowmotion over the past decade, but it seems like the Northwest is going to have to give up its secret and let everyone in on what Flowmotion brings to the table - and the dance floor.

Check out some of their AMAZING live video at www.flowmotion.net

Hi everyone! For those of you not on my email list, here are the details on some deals I'm currently offering:

Early Bird Registration for Winter
November 30 is the final day to register at the Early Bird pricing for Dance Centre weekly classes in the New Year.

Mondays 8:00-9:00pm (note the time change from Fall classes that are currently starting at 8:30pm)
Jan 5 - Apr 27
Earlybird price: $255 for 17 classes

Wednesdays 8:00-9:00pm
Jan 7 - Apr 29
Earlybird price: $255 for 17 classes

Registration for complete sessions (January - April) will continue through mid December at $275 for 17 classes. If spaces are still available after that point, I will post pricing and dates for four-week segments. Before you register, please take the time to visit the Calendar page at http://christahoops.com to read my cancellation and refund policy.

Sweet Fall Deal
There are four weeks left in the Fall weekly classes at the Dance Centre, and spaces are available! Register for four weeks for $60 - that's $15 per class, the same pricing as the EarlyBird discounts for the Winter session. This is a great opportunity to get back into hooping, add some sparkle into the grey days of Vancouver in the Fall, and give yourself a break from holiday stress! If you have friends who have been curious about hoop classes, this is their chance to try it out at a low price: new students can use my hoops for free during this session!

Mondays 8:30-9:30pm
Nov 24 - Dec 15 $60 for 4 classes

Wednesdays 8:00-9:00pm
Nov 26 - Dec 17 $60 for 4 classes

Already registered in Fall classes, but having trouble making it out every week? Remember that you can send a friend to take your space at no charge (and they can use my hoops for free, too!).

Hooping for Hunger
My fundraiser for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank has already raised $60 through four hoop orders, thanks to Gail, Natasha, Lindsay and Nicky! This cash donation will become the equivalent of $180 through the bulk-food-buying power of the Food Bank, hooray!

Order a custom hoop between now and December 31, and I will donate $5 to the GVFB. Each custom hoop (starting price is $50) normally includes a $10 credit to be used towards a future class or second hoop. If you would like to support the Food Bank too, let me know and I will convert this credit to cash and make a donation of $15 to help feed individuals and families in the Lower Mainland who are struggling to put healthy food on their tables.

If you are planning to order a hoop as a gift this holiday season, please give me at least two weeks notice! (that would be December 11 for hoops guaranteed to be ready for Dec 25) Cross-Canada shipping is available via Greyhound, but be sure to check out their holiday cut-off dates too! You can check rates online using their calculator - plan for a 2lb hoop in the Oversize catagory, shipping from Vancouver, or let me know if you'd like help figuring that out!

That's all for now! Email me at christahoops@gmail.com to register for classes or order hoops, and we'll make arrangements for either PayPal invoicing or a cash delivery.

Happy Hooping!

I've got space in my Fall sets on both Mondays (8:30-9:30pm) and Wednesdays (8-9pm) at the Dance Centre.. $70 for four consecutive weeks, or $20 for a drop-in. Winter 2009 (and Spring/Summer and Fall!) session dates and prices are up on the Calendar page at http://christahoops.com - EarlyBird pricing in effect until Nov 30!

To raise money for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, I am donating $5 from every custom hoop order made between now and Dec 31, 2008. Custom hoops start at $50, and include a $10 credit towards a class, private, or second hoop. If you would like to support the GVFB as well, you can let me know that you would like to donate your credit, and I will give the Food Bank $15.. which they can magically transform into $45 worth of groceries to help feed people in the Lower Mainland who need a hand! Cool, eh?

Details on ordering hoops can be found on the HoopShop page at http://christahoops.com or you can contact me to register for classes at christahoops@gmail.com

World Hoop Day 888
All around the globe, hoopers get together on World Hoop Day to share the joy and delight we feel while hooping. Last year's beach picnic on 7/7/07 was AMAZING - 30-40 hoopers (plus bystanders who joined in) met at English Bay with our picnic blankets, tasty treats, upbeat music and armloads of hoops to share.. it was a beautiful evening!

This year, we're doing it all over again! Join other Vancouver Hoopers (and visitors from out-of-town) on August 8, 2008 as we celebrate World Hoop Day. 7:30pm onwards, at English Bay (near the intersections of Davie, Denman and Beach/Pacific Ave) - we'll be somewhere within sight of the entrance to the beach at this point. Last year our space was on the grass a little west of the entrance, right beside the SeaWall so lots of vistors were able to interrupt their evening stroll for a little hooping!

Bring a blanket and some of your favourite picnic food to share with a few others (you don't need to feed 40 folks - last year there was plenty to go around!)

For more details, visit the discussion thread at the Vancouver Hoopers tribe:
http://tribes.tribe.net/vancouverhoopers/thread/47dd0b85-7f49-4646-82b8-5073ec04c52c

Hoop Shop
New in the hoop shop: black and brown 3/4" textured tape. If you've always wanted a grippy hoop, but didn't love the day-glo colours, this option is for you! I've already made a dark green hoop with brown tape for a student, and it looks grand!
NOTE THESE DATES: I will be out of the country (Japan! Oo!) from Aug 23rd to Sep 7, so the final date for summer hoop orders is Tuesday Aug 19th, pickup by Thursday Aug 21st, and any other orders made before Tuesday Sep 9 will be availble for pickup on Saturday Sep 13.

Saturday Circus
I couldn't leave out a mention of my favourite weekly event! Summertime is the perfect season for hooping in public, and every Saturday between 2-4pm, the Vancouver Hoopers (and poi-spinners, jugglers, unicyclists, diablo artists, etc) get together at the Vancouver Art Gallery to play on the sidewalk in front of the Gallery Cafe steps. I bring music and hoops (and poi, and juggling gear) to share, so it is an easy place for you to stop by and play for a bit... family members are welcome, too - we often have wee ones playing with smaller hoops or learning to toss a single juggling ball, and we'll try to coax any non-hooping partners into a skill-toy activity so everyone can be included in the fun!

Love is in the.. hoop?
I wanted to mention the upcoming wedding of two of my longest hooping students: they met in my class, and it was lovely watching their friendship and romance grow! Congratulations, Dave and Christine! May your marriage be joyful and hoop-full (though I can't really imagine it any other way!)

A second love story is my own: while hooping at a Saturday Circus, I met a juggler... and met him again a few months later while hooping at the Friday night ballroom dancing (not on this year) and then we had our first date on BC Day, 2007! Today is my one-year anniversary of being with Chris, and I am blissfully happy (and wrapping up this newsletter so we can head out for a day at Harrison Hot Springs)

May hooping bring you joy, peace, relief, and happiness! Hoop on!

Christa

More details? Ask Will if you have specifics requirements or
questions but the party is being held in the new hockey arena and
2,000 to 3,000 people are expected. There is a stage at one end where
music and dancing will be taking place. Salsa / Bhangra / Rock / Folk
/ etc. The rink is divided into sections with games, main stage with
dance floor, and a beer garden. There is no stated theme but if you
can work Frisbees into your act I am sure it would be a hit with this
crowd. :) (No - that is not required).
The Vancouver International Jazz Festival takes over the Roundhouse and David Lam Park, on Pacific between Davie and Drake.

Performer lineup for the outdoor stage is here: http://www.coastaljazz.ca/index.cfm?page_id=98&view=VENUE&venue_id=43
First show each day is at noon, last act starts at 8pm. The groups selected for this stage tend to be very accessible and dance-worthy.. and great for hooping!

If the stage is set up as usual, there will be an excellent space for hooping just to the street-side of the stage - no one sits here, because they all want to watch the performers, so it is a great area for us to dance around with hoops, play with poi and juggling toys! The fence along the side and backstage area is a great place to drop your gear, lock up bikes, set up shade, etc... there IS still a chance of belongings going missing, with so many people wandering through, so plan accordingly!

Saturday I plan to get there no later than 3, possibly closer to 2 (I need to cat-sit after waterpolo in the morning, not sure how long that will take) and stay for most of the afternoon and evening.... Sunday possibly the same if I can postpone a transfer-of-house-lease meeting!

Please come and play, and bring more hoopers or wannabes! I'll have at least 15 hoops with me to share, and it will be an awesome day :)

I will be heading to the coast with Wassabi Collective on the weekend of June 6th and will be bringing 3 Psi Hoops for sale!. Please pass the word on to anyone you know who may be interested as Id like to sell all 3 together, or on the same weekend at least.

They have 20 leds each (a mix of dragonfly(mostly) and rainbow.) They are 1" tubing w/42 outside/40 inside diameter. I would like $225 for each of them. They are a year old but have only been used for a handful of short performances. They are also carried around in a bag so are in great condition. The taping for each one is either blue, green or pink. They come with chargers and instructions. They are absolutely amazing, I love them, I am just interested in getting smaller ones.

If you have any questions feel free to message me or post here.

Hope to see you at the shows too either way! Happy Hooping, Nicole

... The Earth Day Vancouver Celebration is an opportunity for the public to get hands-on with the Earth, by helping to restore this urban paradise to its natural beauty. Guided by restoration experts from Evergreen and the Jericho Stewardship Group, participants are invited to pitch in to remove habitat-destroying invasive species such as English ivy and spurge laurel, and replace them with native trees and wildflowers Families can help children plant a tiny cedar or Garry oak tree in Jericho Park, under which their great-grandchildren might one day play.

Besides restoration activity, the Earth Day Vancouver Celebration offers free nature tours, a native plant sale, dancing trees on stilts, a mischievous band of roving "invasive species," a participatory Earth Mandala created by Secret Lantern Society, eco-activities for kids, and the world’s first Pedal-Powered Puppet Stage.

And when you're tired of digging, get dancing! The Earth Day Stage, programmed by THE VANCOUVER FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL and emceed by DJ Timothy Wisdom, features a diverse high-energy lineup that will have all ages grooving to the spicy world fusion of Tambura Rasa, the joyous energy of the young Kunaka marimba ensemble, the Appalachian grooves of Dyad, and more. The Earth Day Stage runs from 1pm to 5pm....

I'm totally loving the feeling of being back to regular weekly hooping sessions.. though I'll admit I'm spending as much time working on other circusy things like unicycles and juggling, but I DO love to have the hoop action going, too :)

Who's up for this week? Anyone able to bring tunes? My waterpolo practice is switching to mornings starting this week, so hauling extra gear winds up going even farther around the city... but I can bring Big Pink if I need to!
