... many of us will be inside the fence at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, hooping away to various incredible performers from around the world. I expect to be layering on the sunscreen so I can dance all day long!

Anyone planning to do the Art Gallery thing still? The usual music sources (me, Dave) won't be around, but make plans of your own and have a wonderful day!

See you next week :)

Just wondering if any other hoopers are heading up to the Pemberton Music Festival. I am trying to decide whether to bring a hoop or two up with me. I will not be bringing my LED hoop with, as I cannot lock it up. I am leaning towards not bringing any hoops actually - I am just not sure what the vibe is going to be out there.
Any thoughts?? Anybody bringing their hoops out?

i don't care what the weather forecast says, I'm'a still heading to the Art Gallery for 2pmish to hoop and juggle and perhaps unicycle! If the skies open up, then we can head underground to the rink at Robson Square... and if the construction down there has gotten to the point of EVERYTHING being closed off, then we can figure something else out :)

Come play!

(won't it be a nice change to be able to hoop without wearing coats of sunscreen and getting all overheated?)

Saturday Circus goes to the Jazz Fest this weekend, Sunday too!

Hot and sunny is the forecast for both days, so bring sunscreen, water, and shade!

The Vancouver International Jazz Festival takes over the Roundhouse and David Lam Park, on Pacific between Davie and Drake.

Performer lineup for the outdoor stage is here: http://www.coastaljazz.ca/index.cfm?page_id=98&view=VENUE&venue_id=43
First show each day is at noon, last act starts at 8pm. The groups selected for this stage tend to be very accessible and dance-worthy.. and great for hooping!

If the stage is set up as usual, there will be an excellent space for hooping just to the street-side of the stage - no one sits here, because they all want to watch the performers, so it is a great area for us to dance around with hoops, play with poi and juggling toys! The fence along the side and backstage area is a great place to drop your gear, lock up bikes, set up shade, etc... there IS still a chance of belongings going missing, with so many people wandering through, so plan accordingly!

Saturday I plan to get there no later than 3, possibly closer to 2 (I need to cat-sit after waterpolo in the morning, not sure how long that will take) and stay for most of the afternoon and evening.... Sunday possibly the same if I can postpone a transfer-of-house-lease meeting!

Please come and play, and bring more hoopers or wannabes! I'll have at least 15 hoops with me to share, and it will be an awesome day :)

Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the Wham-O hula hoop... and my parents were watching the 11pm CTV news with Lloyd Robertson and saw a little piece they did - along with vintage footage, they used some of the shots from our CTV feature last summer, so Melly, Phil, and Cyndi were all on there (yeah, me too...)... woot! No credit, of course, but that's okay :)

If you want to see it, go to CTV's website and scroll down to "see the latest news with Lloyd Robertson"... I don't know if they keep archives, but June 19 is there.. we're in part 3 of their video clips from last night's news.

And, tomorrow is Circus day! I'll be there with Big Pink and the PBOP, rolling in around 2pm. I've heard we've got at least one out-of-towner coming to join us, so be sure to come out and play!

A very special Circus this Saturday...

So, last weekend I was away because my sister was getting married... we had an awesome time up near Williams Lake, had an honorary Saturday-Circus-extension up there, and the wedding was delightful!

THIS Saturday, Heather and Billy (my sis and new bro-in-law) are coming to Vancouver, and are particularly looking forward to playing with us at the Art Gallery - Billy has been working on his poi moves (we had him spinning fire as part of the post-ceremony party), and Heather has been dabbling with hoops and poi and juggling.

I would love for all of you to come out this Saturday and help me make this a huge, amazing celebration - whether you're celebrating their new marriage, celebrating June, celebrating your joy in hooping... anything and everything would be great!

I'll be there at 2pm.. we'll probably be whisking them away for dinner pretty soon after 4pm,. 'cause Heather's got a special surprise planned for Billy that starts at 7... but at 2 we'll have music and hooping and juggling and everything! If the weather is on the wetter side, the party will just move underground to Robson Square.

Come play!

Looking for Hoop Performers for June 19th

Hello Everyone,

I'm going to be hooping in a performance on June 19th, and we are looking for 3 other hoopers to join us.

There will be 3 rehearsals (first one is Sunday, June 8th at 4:30pm) and the actual performance on Thursday, June 19th is 5 1/2 minutes (two songs).

We will be dressed in 80's theme costumes, and will just run out and do our thing, alongside 80 other performers doing things like juggling and trampoline stunts.

This is a paying gig. There is also a costume budget on top of this, and we will be responsible for putting together our own costumes.

If you are interested or would like more details, send me a message, or email Travis at travis@vancouvercircusschool.ca

Psi Hoops for sale!!

Hello everybody!

I will be heading to the coast with Wassabi Collective on the weekend of June 6th and will be bringing 3 Psi Hoops for sale!. Please pass the word on to anyone you know who may be interested as Id like to sell all 3 together, or on the same weekend at least.

They have 20 leds each (a mix of dragonfly(mostly) and rainbow.) They are 1" tubing w/42 outside/40 inside diameter. I would like $225 for each of them. They are a year old but have only been used for a handful of short performances. They are also carried around in a bag so are in great condition. The taping for each one is either blue, green or pink. They come with chargers and instructions. They are absolutely amazing, I love them, I am just interested in getting smaller ones.

If you have any questions feel free to message me or post here.

Hope to see you at the shows too either way! Happy Hooping, Nicole

Okay, I'll have sunscreen to share, but make sure you bring a waterbottle, light layers of clothing, and whatever level of sun or shade tolerance you like - there's space by the wall of the Art Gallery, or you can choose to play underground as well, though I and the PBOP will be hanging with the tunes up top as per usual, collecting freckles under my SPF 50!

Newbie curious about saturday VAG hooping

*waves* hello all...new here, just started hooping last week...

I am wondering what time everyone goes to the gallery to hoop on saturday? I am thinking of going to watch...I won't bring my hoop yet waaaaay to embarrassed for that! :-|
Just started hooping so the most I can do is keep it around my waist and (sort of) walk in a circle...but would be helpful to see how it's done properly and get to know some of you...

Does anyone go to wreck to hoop in the summer?

Sunshine comes out of the clouds for the Saturday Circus!

So... tonight and tomorrow morning are supposed to be iffy, but the forecast says that 2-4pm (and possibly onwards) is supposed to be SUNNY! Woot!

The Purple Bag of Phun and I will be heading downtown after waterpolo.. so that means I actually tend to roll in just around 2pm, not the 2:30ish that I used to be guilty of... so, come play! My newest patchwork hoop will be making its debut, showing off every colour of tape that I have for use on my hoops-for-sale (including the glitter and prism colours, oo!) and I'll have a handful of other hoops to share, no fear!

Note for all you one-skill people: why not make a resolution to learn something new this summer? Try juggling - I've got gear to loan, or poi spinning - check in with David in the Vancouver Poi tribe to see if he's offering a drop-in lesson at 1pm, or see if someone's got an extra pair you can try out... the more flow-toy skills you have, the larger your repetoire of moves to steal for your hooping! How amazing is that?!

See you tomorrow :)

Okay, I got a nifty wheelie duffel last Saturday, and it holds Big Pink and all our juggling gear! I'll be wheeling it down all the time from now on, so provided that I don't have any schedule conflicts, I'll be providing the stereo for future playdates!

Please feel free to bring CDs and any portable MP3 player or whatever - it has an aux input, and if I can find the wee cord that goes from headphones out to the input on the stereo, we'll be in business!

I do plan to stop briefly in at the Earth Day festival, but won't delay too long, so I'm aiming to be at Robson Square for 2:30pm at the latest!

Forecast is for sun, up to 18 degrees, and 30% chance of showers. Not too shabby, eh?! Bring your sunscreen!

Earth Day 2008 Celebration at Jericho

mark your calendars for April 26th. i had so much fun hooping at this event last year!

http://www.evergreen.ca/en/involved/ed_2008.html

... The Earth Day Vancouver Celebration is an opportunity for the public to get hands-on with the Earth, by helping to restore this urban paradise to its natural beauty. Guided by restoration experts from Evergreen and the Jericho Stewardship Group, participants are invited to pitch in to remove habitat-destroying invasive species such as English ivy and spurge laurel, and replace them with native trees and wildflowers Families can help children plant a tiny cedar or Garry oak tree in Jericho Park, under which their great-grandchildren might one day play.

Besides restoration activity, the Earth Day Vancouver Celebration offers free nature tours, a native plant sale, dancing trees on stilts, a mischievous band of roving "invasive species," a participatory Earth Mandala created by Secret Lantern Society, eco-activities for kids, and the world’s first Pedal-Powered Puppet Stage.

And when you're tired of digging, get dancing! The Earth Day Stage, programmed by THE VANCOUVER FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL and emceed by DJ Timothy Wisdom, features a diverse high-energy lineup that will have all ages grooving to the spicy world fusion of Tambura Rasa, the joyous energy of the young Kunaka marimba ensemble, the Appalachian grooves of Dyad, and more. The Earth Day Stage runs from 1pm to 5pm....

So, let's play! I'm going to try hauling Big Pink and a cord around with me and all my hoops this morning, so I got tunes... and if I have another nap in the middle of the afternoon, blame it on watching too many episodes of Project Runway Canada last night (mm, 4:30am?).. :)

Okay, so it says we'll have cloudy breaks by this afternoon, but I'm still okay with that.

Can't wait to see y'all at Robson Square! I may actually even be early this week, 'cause I'm heading downtown soon to play a game of waterpolo at VAC... shoulder and neck rubs will be welcome :)

I won't be packing Big Pink today (too much theft at VAC, HUGE problem) so if any of you ARE able to bring a stereo, that would be truly awesome! I do have a stash of CDs and MP3 players that I pack with me, so I can share the DJ load..

ubc's throwing an outdoor music event next friday april 11th... you gotta buy tickets to actually get into the field, and gotta be a student to buy a ticket, but i figure, its outdoors so who needs to be inside the chain links? i'm sure we could find enough space just outside of the gates to create some hoopin' room... the parking lot just behind the field, the turning loop by the pool.. i don't know, but i'm sure there's space to be found...

here's the line up.

At 1 p.m. the McInnes Field Main Stage opens, featuring performances from Stars, Wintersleep, Five Alarm Funk, The Most Serene Republic, DJ's Neil Hillbrandt + Half Alive,

or check out http://www.amsblockparty.com

anyone interested?

I'm totally loving the feeling of being back to regular weekly hooping sessions.. though I'll admit I'm spending as much time working on other circusy things like unicycles and juggling, but I DO love to have the hoop action going, too :)

Who's up for this week? Anyone able to bring tunes? My waterpolo practice is switching to mornings starting this week, so hauling extra gear winds up going even farther around the city... but I can bring Big Pink if I need to!

Seattle's FLOWMOTION return to Vancouver this Friday night!

Hey everyone!

Here's your regular, show-week, friendly little reminder that this Friday night we are in for AN ABSOLUTE TREAT... as Seattle, Washington's masters of groove rock return to Vancouver once again!

Bonfire Music & Events presents...

The Pacific North-West's fastest rising live act

FLOWMOTION

Friday April 4th
The Fairview Pub
898 West Broadway

Doors at 9:00 - Show starts at 10:00

$10 admission

With their high-energy, infectious rock and roll, Flowmotion dominates the live music scene in the Pacific Northwest. But with booked performances at the biggest West Coast music festivals this summer including High Sierra, Joshua Tree and Earthdance Northern California, they are poised to break onto the national scene in 2008.

Flowmotion's live performances are renowned for stellar musicianship, contagious energy, packed dance floors and, courtesy of their two lead guitarists, smoking guitar riffs. Fronted by singer/ songwriter Josh Clauson (electric guitar, vocals), with RL Heyer (electric and slide guitars, vocals), Sabu Miyata (bass), Scott Goodwin (drums, vocals) and Bob Rees (percussion, vibraphone), Flowmotion's expertly controlled grooves harness the power of their funky, percussion-driven rock and roll.

The band also hosts and headlines the Summer Meltdown, a 3-day music festival held in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. 2007's 7th annual event drew over 3,000 people. The festival has hosted such bands as Zilla, Yard Dogs Road Show, Bill Frisell, alto sax extraordinaire Skerik, Garaj Mahal, Sky Cries Mary and Bassnectar. Seattle's own Blake Lewis has also graced the Meltdown's stage as both performer and festival emcee.

this saturday's circus - heads up

hey ladies and gents,

as usual, whether or not i'm coming out for hoop fun tomorrow is a mystery, even to me, but i just read about another event happening from 1:30 to 3pm in the exact space that we use when the weather is not so wonderful. so we may end up at the other end of the rink or something. hopefully there are electrical outlets at that end.

here's the info:

Saturday March 29th -- afternoon 1:30pm-3:00 pm...

Part reclamation of public space, part exploration of the voice and a complete journey to uncover the inner music of participants, the Sound and Cypher circle is the evolution of Jaia's passion for freeing the voice. Having run free Vocal Circles at Robson Square since January 2005, the latest version is a fusion of soundhealing, chanting, improvisational theatre exercises, beatboxing and freestyle rhyme.

The circle will begin under the dome (down the stairs on the Robson side of the Art Gallery-adjacent to the Gallery cafe) with a vocal warm up and some toning and chanting. The group will then do some exercises to loosen up their improvisational voices, practice some basic beatboxing tecniques, witness Jaia demonstrate freestyle technique and finally set the space for a Cypher circle (a circle of rhyme oriented vocal play).

Donations are welcome but not expected. Please bring a blanket that can be laid on the ground for some of the exercises and water/ tea or something liquid to keep the voice lubricated.

Any questions can be e-mailed to Jaia at... (i don't want to post his info here, but if someone wants to contact him, i could message it.)

Hey everyone,
I just joined the site, as I've become a hoop enthusiast much like yourselves. I've been wanting to acquire a collapsible hoop, but I don't know anyone who makes them. Can someone help me please!!

I actually live in Victoria, but I come to Vancouver often. I also have a couple of tape design ideas, if there is the possibility of incorporating it into the hoop build.

Thanks and I hope everyone is taking advantage of the sunny days!

i will probably be putting in an order in the next few days to identi-tape and the exit store, if anyone wants in.

i'm pretty sure i have enough on my list for a minimum order, but i don't mind sharing the shipping fees. you would also save on customs brokerage.

let me know ASAP.

i want some of that dark purple tape. :)

does anyone know what their minimum order is? they're not answering my emails.

i guess i could just try ordering one 10-pack and see what happens.

how many hoops will that cover anyways? it doesn't say how much is on a roll.

thanks, dears.

hey lovely guys and gals,

this sunday (the 10th) is my birthday, so i was wonderin' if people were into having another little potlucky thing at the usual hoop-down.

i *was* thinking of renting an indoor space, but it probably won't work out so last minute, so unless i post differently before then, it would be same time and place as usual (Robson Square - 2 to 4ish)

hopefully we'll get weather like we had this afternoon. :)

Today is the last day to register for Sunday's workshop at the Roundhouse!

Just in case you're planning to sign up for the Roundhouse workshop this Sunday, but haven't gotten around to it....

(... which I realize is a normal occurance in our busy lives, and last year these workshops all filled in the last day and a half before the session started, so I've seen this before ...)

... there is a possibility that this Sunday's workshop will be cancelled if we don't meet the minimum registration numbers by Friday morning! If you are one of the people already signed up, try to convince a friend to join you in the workshop session - you know they'll have fun, AND you'll have a new hooping partner!

Haven't been to a Hoop Play class or workshop, and don't know what to expect? A two-hour session (with water and bathroom breaks) can take a beginner hooper from waist hooping through overhead and vertical hand-hooping, with lifts, drops, some fancy skips and jumps, and transitions to be able to link the moves together. Intermediate or advanced hoopers will get to fill in the gaps in their skill sets (ankles? knees? shoulders? angle hooping?), polish old moves and get feedback on problem areas, as well as working with double-hoops, either poi-style or on-body. Instruction is individualized, and with smaller workshops (the max for this one is 12 hoopers) you will get lots of feedback as well as time to practice your new skills!

Wear comfortable layers - tank tops or sport bras as a bottom layer that you can peel down to as you heat up, or need more skin exposed for shoulder hooping and other skin-assisted moves... workout/yoga pants or shorts that leave your knees exposed if you're interested in working on knee hooping... and thick ankle socks if you want to learn kick starts! A water bottle is a must-have, too - we'll be getting pretty warm as the music and the groove kicks in :)

These workshops are $38 per session if you bring your own hoop, or you can pay an additional $5 rental fee on the day of the workshop to use one of my hoops. Take home a hoop after the workshop for $10 off the regular rate of $50! Registration is through the Roundhouse, and their cancellation and refund policy will apply to these workshops.

Register online at http://roundhouse.ca or call (604)... .

The Roundhouse is located at 181 Roundhouse Mews, at the corner of Davie and Pacific St in Yaletown

This means I should be back out to play with ya'll some time in March. I hope to get chance to bring baby Ayla down to a hooping session some time before that so you can meet her and I can get inspired again.
I am so stoked to get back into shape and very much look forward to seeing all your new moves.

Seattle's FLOWMOTION hit Vancity for 2 nights!

This should be a very inspirational show for all you hooping folks! I know Flowmotion have a big hooping component to their annual festival... the Summer Meltdown.

Anyhoo... hope to see some of you out for these shows! Brendan, I KNOW you'll be there! ;)

Bonfire Music & Events presents Seattle, Washington's

FLOWMOTION

Friday December 28 & Saturday December 29
The Fairview Pub
898 West Broadway
Vancouver BC

Seattle-based groove virtuosos Flowmotion seamlessly blend funk, jazz, rock and blues with African and Latin rhythms to create a fresh, unique sound all their own. The group's live performances are renowned for their infectious, positive energy, stellar musicianship - and packed dance floors. Their recorded output garners heavy rotation with fans and casual listeners alike. Formed in 1999 on Washington State's San Juan Island, the group is a favourite of the improvisational rock scene, routinely drawing capacity college, festival and club audiences.

The group's sophomore studio effort, 2005's Is That Right, showcases the quintet's fusion of styles into a heady, funky brew while suggesting things to come -- and demonstrating no small crossover appeal -- with the radio-friendly single "Wild Eyes."
Flowmotion is fronted by singer-songwriter Josh Clauson, who penned much of Is That Right, also pulling lead vocal and guitar duties. Backing Clauson is Sabu Miyata, bass; Scott Goodwin, drums and backing vocals; Bob Rees, percussion and vibes; and RL Heyer, guitars and vocals. A self-proclaimed "World Funk Blender," the band is a hard-working outfit, spending nearly 200 days on the road, on average per year. This work ethic has paid dividends, garnering Flowmotion a growing corps of fans from Alaska to California and points east, many trailing the band from show to show.

Since its inception the group has also hosted the yearly Flowmotion Summer Meltdown Festival, a groove-packed showcase of likeminded bands, set against the pristine backdrop of Whitehorse Mountain in Darrington, Washington.

Fans and initiates alike have also scored their Flowmotion fix at other annual events such as the High Sierra Music Festival; the Oregon Country Fair and Bumbershoot, Seattle's venerable end-of-summer arts and music bash. On tour Flowmotion has made the marquee at such venues as Portland, Oregon's Crystal Ballroom; Seattle's Showbox Theater; and even California's infamous Folsom Prison. Other stops include Boulder Colorado's Fox Theater, the Bear's Tooth Theatre in Anchorage, Alaska and San Francisco's Boom Boom Room. Testimony to the group's crossover appeal, Flowmotion has appeared on stage with such luminaries as Widespread Panic, G-Love & Special Sauce, and the legendary Michael Franti and Spearhead, to name but a few.

Solid songwriting, formidable improvisational chops and irresistible rhythms...

GO WITH THE FLOW!

"The five-piece Flowmotion delivers enticing grooves and rhythms guaranteed to keep any audience in motion. The band's instrumental work sparkles with originality and flows with precision and purpose. It's been awhile since I've played a new disc so many times in such a short space of time."
~ Mick Skidmore, Relix Magazine

"The band unifies crowds with its vocal melodies, harmonies and stellar rhythm section. It moves seamlessly through original compositions with a liberating mixture of world-funk, jam-rock and sweet ballads that beg total abandonment of self."
~ John Larson, Tacoma Weekly

I'll be heading to Robson Square, though I'll be mildly surprised if I get there for 2pm.. maybe 2:30? Anyway, I'll be there, with hoops, and a smile, and be happy to dance around in the sunshine! Anyone care to join me?

(oh, and the DnC music source will be absent, so if anyone has a wee stereo they'd like to bring, that would be cool!)

I've taken advantage of my membership at the Dance Centre to book a studio for the cheapo $10-last-minute-rate... for 3-4pm today. Y'all are welcome to join me, if you wanna toss a loonie or twoonie towards the rental cost, that's great, if not, no worries.

If I get downtown early, I'll swing by Robson Square to see if anyone's there that needs to be gathered along..

The Dance Centre is located at the corner of Granville and Davie street - sign in at the front desk, and they'll let you know which studio we're in!

SAVE THE DATE! HP Retreat set for 6/26- 6/29, 2008!

Save the Date!

We wanted to give everyone advance notice of this amazing event. Last year, we were only able to give two months notice, and we had some hoopers who were not able to come. We had such a good time last year, that we hope that this notice comes early enough that all who would like to come, can make it.

The 2nd Annual National Hoop Path Retreat dates are now set for June 26- June 29th, 2008. We decided to bump up the dates from July so that we do not conflict with Transformus, or the heat of July's southern Sun.

We will follow the same schedule as last year, but will offer an additional beginner set of workshops (three day intensive) immediately preceding the Intermediate/Advanced Workshops each of the three days.

We will provide you with all the details and the full schedule very soon.

If you're too curious to wait, here are some links to last year's event. These are just to give everyone and idea of what this event is like. Please keep in mind that these posts are about last year's retreat.

I'm heading to Robson Square tomorrow, for 2ish (anyone notice that we're trickling in around 2:30ish these days? I AIM for 2... but these things happen...)

Wondering if the lovely Dave and Christine will be bringing their small and easily portable source of delightful music?

And, this is a good time to query: if/when the rink gets shut down for the revamps related to reopening/being something2010ish, would any of you be interested in either aiming for a weekly studio rental somewhere (the Dance Centre is $10/hr, if we get a last minute day-of rental, and I've just found out about a lovely sword fighting studio that might be good, too)... or finding some interesting somewhat sheltered place (downtown side of one of the bridges?) to continue our play through the grey months... Any other suggestions?

Xta gave me a great suggestion for gaffer's tape which I'm going to look into as well.

I have the opportunity to start teaching hoop dance classes in my new hometown. :) I would have access to the dance studio twice a month for 2 hours at a time.

Where should I begin??? Most of my students can barely keep the hoop up around their waist, but some are a bit more experienced.

Music??? Any suggestions? I'm tring to put together a collection of tunes with a variety of beats and speeds and themes to encourage experimentation.

Any boring things like insurance that I should worry about?

Thanks so much! Wish me luck. :)

Let's plan something special to celebrate a year's worth of meeting at 2pm on Saturdays to play with our skill toys (and with our friends)...

May I suggest another stunning potluck affair? Bring something to share, maybe we can persude the ladies to bust out the picnic blanket again.. and I think fantastical costume-esque clothing would be fun, too, if anyone would like to join me in that!

So, Saturday, November 3rd, 2pm onwards at the sidewalk in front of the cafe at the Vancouver Art Gallery or downstairs at the Robson Square rink if it is raining. Please come!

(I do still plan to be coming to this NEXT Saturday Circus as well, but I know that many folks will be busy with Halloween prep stuff, so the celebration is set for the following week....)

Wheee!

I know that the Saturday Circus is one of the high points of my week, and I'm always sad when I miss it (like last week, boo hoo!)... so, I'm stoked!

In the immortal words of Dave:
I feel the need to hoop and if I don't get to I quite possibly may lose my mind! Anybody want to help me out by providing sufficient hooping ambiance and presence to propel us to hooping bliss?

..since I missed last Sat, and will be missing this Sat due to a hooping gig with some Dead and hard-of-hearing kids... AND since I came to work at the yarn shop only to discover that the owners decided to close for the day... means I'm free!

I'm going to take Big Pink and an extension cord (did I mention I have a rental car for the weekend?) and some hoops down to Robson Square (play upstairs if the weather remains nicely overcast) and dance dance dance my little heart out :)

Most likely going to be there in the area of 12:30-2ish.. give me a call if you're thinking about coming down but want to check where I'm at: 604 719 2425

Oh, and Thanksgiving content: I am very thankful that I have hooping in my life, and that it has brought me into contact with so many wonderful people, and that our weekly connections to play and socialize and hoop have grown to be such a wonderful part of my schedule that I am sad when I miss them. Thanks, y'all!

I have to write an investigative paper that focuses on a community in some way. I would like to talk about the hooping community but I'm just in the research stage and haven't figured out what question I would like to investigate yet. So I'm just gonna throw some out there and if anyone would like to answer one or a few of them or if they have any other interesting thoughts on what kind of specific question I could look into it would be greatly appreciated.

What defines your community?

What values does it have?

What interests does it share?

What are some of its specific concerns?

Its problems?

Its conflicts?

Thanx guys!

Peace,

.. and the prescription has something to do with MORE COWBELL!...

... or perhaps just some hooping! I'm gonna make it downtown to the Circus between waterpolo games, and am looking forward to getting it on (since we didn't settle the 'Up' or 'Down' question, and I'm not comfortable with using the word 'off' there..) with y'all today.

Big Pink will NOT be making an appearance, so hopefully our other music-supplying gurus will :)

This Saturday, at Robson Square, are the hoopers of Vancouver going to get down, or get up?

Be there at two o'clock to find out!

Don't even pretend not to care about the get up vs. get down debate. Check out the following article for news about how this important matter is affecting our neighbours to the south.

Sun Sept 16 - a beach potluck for my bday?!

I had such an awesome time on World Hoop Day at the potluck/hoopfest at English Bay, that I'd like to try to recreate it to celebrate my 35th birthday, which is on Sept 19th.. but we'll do this a few days early, so more people will hopefully be able to come!

When: Sunday September 16th 2007, 6pm onwards

Where: The grassy knoll just west of Denman and Pacific, if we can snag that lovely spot again.. or somewhere else nearby. Rain plans: Robson Square

What: potluck and hooping! Bring some finger-friendly food to share (perhaps list it below so we can get a good selection again!), hoops, and a blanket to lounge on... a stereo would be lovely, too, if someone would care to cart one with batteries along...

Who: you and any lovely friends who would like to join us! If you are an outgoing person, it would be great if you helped make any of my non-hooping friends who make an appearance feel part of the group!

Why: 'cause its my birthday, and I'd love to celebrate it with you.. help me erase the memory of my last (really really bad) party... which was probably at least six years ago, 'cause I got scared and haven't really bothered to celebrate myself since! Now, it's time!

Please, no gifts other than the gift of your company (and some yummy food!)

Will you come? Please? :)

X.

Lola and I ran into a girl at the park a while back who is organizing a pillow fighting league. She wants to have a hoop-off sort of deal at the intermission of their tournament. She gave us a flier, but it has no date on it for their pending tournament. If anyone is interested in participating, I've posted the flier under the photos and the organizer's contact info is there.

I've set up a tribe for students of my classes and workshops, to see the notes of what we did in each class, and to post available drop-in spaces in otherwise full classes, and reminders of class cancellations, etc. Completely class related (and private to maintain that), all the group social stuff will still happen in THIS tribe.

Those of you connected with me via the Tribe 'friends' action, who are students (and whose Tribe name I recognize) should have already received an invite to join the tribe. Any of you students who I've missed, please let me know here and I'll send you an invite ASAP. If you're not a student, but want to be notified of openings for drop-ins on the classes, let me know and I'll add you to the list!

Thanks, y'all :)

http://publicdreams.org/event_details.html?day=15&month=09&year=2007

7-9pm I'll be running free hoop workshops somewhere on site, so you and your friends are welcome to come play!

Public Dreams is the organization that puts on Illuminares and the Parade of Lost Souls.. I haven't been to the Night of Lights previously, but I believe it is a smaller-but-similar event, rather like the Wild Lights night in Edgemont Village, North Van, a few weeks back. Should be lovely, and hey! Come hoop in the park with me! :)

My little sister is coming for a visit this weekend and I'd love for her to get to see a big group of hoopers and other fun folk. Who is planning on coming out? Will you be bringing music and extra hoops, poi etc.? She loves to dance so having music would be a big bonus.

Hope to see you there!

Come play alongside the ballroom dancers! They provide the music and hundreds of bodies, we use some space beside them (at the base of the stairs leading up to the usual Saturday playdate location) to dance around and work on mad hoop skills!

Check any valuables in their bag check, though - I've had my wallet stolen from under my nose!
