So...I've been looking for some chain, and have been having a hard time. I managed to find some aluminum chain at a bead shop, but would prefer something sturdier...as we've already had a link come undone, and a ball go flying.
I'm basically looking for chain like you would find on a dog collar, but a finer gauge. I've seen it used in small dog collars, but they're only about 12-14 inches. (need about 18-20")
Any suggestions on where we can get this by the foot/meter? Or....any suggestions for other materials? New to this, and still trying to figure out what works...

Re: looking for chain...any suggestions?
Thu, August 9, 2007 - 10:32 PMYup...tried Canadian Tire and Home Depot. Both had chain by the foot, but it was pretty big chain. (or, it was chain for swing sets, which I thought might catch itself too easily)
I think I might have to stick with the aluminum, and just keep a close eye on it to make sure it's not going to lose another link. -

Sat, August 11, 2007 - 1:42 AMHome Hardware on the Drive is another possibility.
And I've bought chain for poi from Home Depot, so they definitely have some smaller gauges. I always have such a frustrating time when looking there, though. At least at Home Hardware all the people who work there are quite helpful. -

Sat, August 11, 2007 - 10:21 PMLink breakage? Really? I've never ever broken a chain! That's a new one for me. Make sure to look for welded chain--that could be the issue. Also, metals other than steel aren't usually recommended. I'm not sure how well aluminum or other lighter metals would do with that much heat, but steel holds up just fine. -

Sun, August 12, 2007 - 5:38 AMWhat about Rona? I'm sure that I saw some good stuff there. Home of Poi has a really good tutorial on what metals to use and why. They have info on how the metals react to heat and they talk about the coatings on the different metals that release toxic fumes when heated. In my opinion, that's good stuff to know :-) I think David is totally right, stainless steel is the way to go. -

Re: looking for chain...any suggestions?
Wed, August 15, 2007 - 5:15 PMYeah....well, it was kinda like a jewelry chain...not very strong. It does the trick, but we make a point to check the links every so often. I was considering soldering some of the ones closest to the ball, that take the most strain. Oh, and I'm not worried about heat...there's no fire involved here. :) Bruises are enough, I'm not ready to deal with burns!
I'd never considered ball chain, I thought it would be awkward to attach. But I have seen it around....I'll have to keep that in mind. -

Re: looking for chain...any suggestions?
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 4:58 PMOK,
Today I popped into this bead shop on Granville and noticed spools of variety of smaller guage chain. You may want to check them out. It's located at Granville and Nelson across the street from Adrenaline. They also have bead chain. I think you'll find what you're looking for there.
Good luck,
Rick
