Hey Everyone,
I'm teaching a short course for poi that is coming up in September. Here is the info for the course, I hope to see you there and to share my poi path over the last few years with you. To register you can call or email me, and payment can be made in cash on the day.
Soul of Spinning Short Course Description
This course will take place over three classes and is geared for those looking to expand their ability to express passion, emotion, grace, and stillness with poi. Through a combination of breath work, authentic movement practice, musicality and rhythm training, participants will liberate mental and physical patterns that inhibit deep personal expression through poi.
By the end of the workshop each participant will have a totally fresh perspective on the nuanced relationship between their music, body, emotion and poi. Professional fire artists will have the opportunity to work on specific pieces during the workshop, and those who do not will have the confidence to create a performance piece by the end of it.
The workshop will also explore the myth and symbology of fire in various cultures, and discussions on fire story and ritual will be a part of the opening class. Learning how to open up to the element of fire itself requires a personal connection with the qualities of fire and how it interacts with the other elements. Print outs for study and mini-experiential assignments will be given to participants as part of the course.

About the Teacher:
Zamir Dhanji - Zamir is an interdisciplinary performer whose primary mediums are music, poi, and storytelling. He started to seriously learn poi and Nick Woolsey's poi studio on Hastings st. over 4 years ago, and has since met and practiced with some of the best poi spinners around the world at various juggling and poi conventions. His style is far more emotive than technical, with the goal of telling the story of the moment through his movements. He draws inspiration from unconventional sources and incorporates it into his spinning, resulting in a style that is uniquely his own. He will be playing live music at certain points during the workshop to help deepen participants understanding of the connection between melody, rhythm and poi. Instruments he will be incorporating are the hang drum, djembe and the middle-eastern doumbek.
