I'm getting a few poi students together for Thursday mini poi classes at the Roundhouse. We'll start around 5:15, and use whatever space is available to us - sometimes outside, sometimes inside, sometimes with low ceilings, sometimes with high. We'll adjust to whatever space we're in and work on building technique, a strong repertoire of moves, smooth transitions, and ways to move with the poi.. 3-6 is a good number of students. $10 for one hour.

If you're interested in setting up private lessons on a schedule that suits you better, let me know! I also teach on a couple of other days, and can probably work something out.

I had such an awesome time on World Hoop Day at the potluck/hoopfest at English Bay, that I'd like to try to recreate it to celebrate my 35th birthday, which is on Sept 19th.. but we'll do this a few days early, so more people will hopefully be able to come!

When: Sunday September 16th 2007, 2pm onwards

Where: The grassy knoll just west of Denman and Pacific, if we can snag that lovely spot again.. or somewhere else nearby. Rain plans: Robson Square

What: potluck and hooping (and juggling, and poi...)! Bring some finger-friendly food to share (perhaps list it below so we can get a good selection again!), hoops, and a blanket to lounge on... a stereo would be lovely, too, if someone would care to cart one with batteries along...

Who: you and any lovely friends who would like to join us! If you are an outgoing person, it would be great if you helped make any of my non-hooping friends who make an appearance feel part of the group!

Why: 'cause its my birthday, and I'd love to celebrate it with you.. help me erase the memory of my last (really really bad) party... which was probably at least six years ago, 'cause I got scared and haven't really bothered to celebrate myself since! Now, it's time!

www.playpoi.com,

and especially the video section: http://www.playpoi.com/videos. There are some great tutorials here for the behind-the-back weave, 5-beat weave, under-the-leg movement, and a newer move that he calls super duper uberloops, or uberloops for short. I especially love the possibilities that uberloops open up for whole body movement. Wonder how long it takes to get it down?

I know that NIck would love to receive feedback for his work, and comments here are also appreciated. Are you working on any of these moves? Do you have questions about them? New ways of using them? Observations? Let's hear your thoughts!

Actually, I have to admit that I avoid videos in general. I don't practice NEARLY enough to stay up to date with the latest poi spinning trends, so usually videos just get me down. There's a lot of wonderful stuff out there that I can't/don't do. (Yet?)

On the other hand, there are times when I simply need new input, new ideas, new moves to decipher and learn, and so I turn to videos. That's not a paradox, is it?

Here are two worth watching:

Yuta, whose style is so clean and smooth, does everything I like and want to do, but better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCcLZUT81Lw

For some pure tech poi craziness, here's Zan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uNyVZxxf7Y

Other people's videos also show that we're not alone. You can find a lot of people struggling with the same things you are. Watching them might be insightful. Of course, you'll also find people being creative in the same way you are. I thought I was starting to play with stalls in new positions until I watched this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUt6Wf71h7I. Oh well! I'm not the only one, and that's okay!
I'm basically looking for chain like you would find on a dog collar, but a finer gauge. I've seen it used in small dog collars, but they're only about 12-14 inches. (need about 18-20")

We were shut down at the beach last week. That's right - we were told not to have fire there any more. So, for this week, We were thinking of trying Trout Lake. It seems that lots of spinners are from the east side so it might make sense to have it in the neighborhood. It's also close to the sky train for easy access. If this doesn't work out, we can always move back to Kits, except we would have to go farther down the beach.

So - This week - Trout Lake
- Next week - we'll keep you posted.

Please pass the word to anyone who might not get this message.

When you get to Trout Lake, follow the path in from the parking lot and turn left when you reach the water. The path leads to a gravel area with wooden bleachers. It's a good, safe spot to spin.

I'm a total convert to the cult of sock poi!

Just kidding about the cult part, but the convert part is true. I've had more success practicing, finding, creating, and mastering new moves with sock poi than with anything else. I know I have to practice with chains if I want to continue performing fire, but on a day to day basis it's the socks that give me the most giddy joy.

What I want to know is if anyone out there has found a good source of socks that are

1) Long
2) tubular (no foot shape in my socks, please!)
3) and stretchy (but not too too stretchy)

Now, I did find some striped clown socks at Party Bazaar just east of the Cambie bridge, but they're a bit thick and hard to grip for some people. They don't actually stretch that much, but they feel just fine. In fact, I use them all the time now.

I've heard that the type of socks for which I yearn are easily found in the UK. Why there and not here?

I'm considering buying fabric and making a long cone-like tube. If the fabric were white, I could put a globall in the end and have doubly cool night sock poi. Any masters of the thread and needle out there? I have a sewing machine, but it confuses me more than computers.

Let's scour the town and find the source for the coolest socks! In addition to the three requirements above, bright colors and patterns earn the prize!

I may be working on my own moves, or teaching private lessons, so please be aware that this will not be a lesson night!

Bring your own music if there's something specific you want to practice with, or just come and groove with whatever I've got hooked up :) The sound system takes both CDs and iPods/MP3 players.

So, 8:30-9:30pm, the space is at HarbourDance, 927 Granville up on the top floor, the studio is to the right of the stairs. $5 drop-in, cash only, paid to me when you come in the door, first-come-first-served (though I'd be SHOCKED if there was more than a dozen people showing up).. and I'll try this out for the remainder of the Friday nights in January and see how it works out!

I'll be there, so no advanced committment is required.. drop in if you want :)
Class this week is the same as last week:

Saturday
1 pm
at Robson Square
$10 drop-in.
Let me know if you need directions. A few people have shown up quite frazzled after searching for it. Remember that the space is under the intersection of Robson and Howe St downtown, next to the art gallery! I have poi for everyone to try, and of course you can bring your own. It doesn't matter what level you are. Whether beginner or more advanced, you're sure to learn something new!

Hi everyone. I have a few tidbits of info for those of you who are interested in wick.

1) For the hoop I'm making, I'm using 18 inches per spoke. That gives a slightly fatter rolled head for a slightly longer burn and bigger flame. It isn't completely necessary, but I'd rather use slightly more than I need than less. Of course, this will be a performance hoop, and a longer burn is essential. If you're spinning for fun for now, less wick is okay. If you're building a hoop and want wick, let me know what length you need and how many spokes you're using.

2) For poi I suggest 5 to 6 feet per poi head.

3) If you want to buy wick, and if you let me know how much you need before you see me, I can cut it to length for you. This includes applying white glue to the cut to prevent unravelling. If I simply bring the whole roll and cut it when I see you, you'll end up with one unravelled end. This means you should also use white glue when you cut your wick to the right lengths for your hoop or poi.

3) And once again, I have the 2 inch wide, 1/16 inch thick (though it seems thicker), non-wire-inserted stuff. $2 per foot.

That's all! See some of you tomorrow!

I have two requests so far to teach/help make fire poi, and it's starting to sound like we could make a workshop out of it. I'll provide a list of materials, you buy them (or I do, for a slight fee probably), and we get together and build them. I wouldn't charge per hour. It'd be more like a one-time class fee. Sound good?
I'll post the materials list with photos on my website in the next couple of days. Possibly tomorrow. In the meantime, I just need to know who is interested and when the best time may be for a workshop.
2) This Saturday I'll once again teach a drop-in lesson at Robson Square. It's $10, and another chance to fill your head with crazy poi spinning silliness. Beginners are welcome as always. I have lots of poi to try!
More info here: http://www.nightanddaydance.com/poi/classes/
3) At 2 pm, Robson Square starts hoppin' with more poi people, hoopers, capoeiristas, pop 'n lockers, and more! I heard that the juggles may start showing up next! Stay to practice or to try something new. It's free, it's fun, and you won't want to go home!

Details:

Tomorrow, November 18, beneath Robson and Howe

1pm - drop-in poi lesson for all level students, just a measly ten bucks! You'll walk away with more new ideas than you thought possible!

2pm - hoopers arrive, and more people too, and it's a chance to spin, hoop, and play for the rest of the afternoon! there's always music!

That's it. Nice and simple. Hope to see everyone there!

To make it easy, I want to post the events I'm involved in right here in one place:

Saturdays - 2 pm - Robson Square - free! - We gather with the hoopers to spin poi, practice, try hooping, and learn from each other.

Thursdays - 5 pm - Robson Square (this week only) - $10 drop-in - I teach a drop-in group lesson for anyone who wants to polish their skills, learn new moves, add dance to their spinning, and receive feedback. You'll discover whole new realms of spinning that never before occurred to you!

Fridays - 5 pm - Just Dance this week - $15 drop-in - just like Thursday classes, I teach a drop-in class for anyone who wants to join in. Just Dance is a great venue and event in its own right, and it's worth sticking around for. Info here: http://www.justdance.ca. Map here: http://www.nightanddaydance.com/maps/justdance.html

That's it for now. I'll be sure to update everyone when new events are created!

This is the birth of the Vancouver Poi Tribe! I hope to make this a place for curious folk to find info about poi spinning in Vancouver. Classes, events, gatherings, sources of materials, etc. We're distinguished slightly from fire tribes in that we only deal with non-charred poi here: sock, streamer, tennis ball, flag, stocking, glow, and other poi are our focus. Once I figure out how this thing works, I'll connect it to the Vancouver fire tribe for easy crossover. That's it! Thanks for visiting!
