Dear Interested parties and attendees of Transformus:

We write you today to address the recent wave of public comment and
question about the status of Transformus as an official Burning Man
Regional Event. Beginning in March 2008, Burning Man has been in
receipt of multiple comments and complaints regarding certain aspects of
the production of Transformus and as of Monday, June 23, we made an
official statement to the Transformus LLC members regarding this matter.

Transformus is a Burning Man Regional Event that requested and received
its “official” status in 2005, during its first year in existence. As
you may know, any event that is designated as an official Burning Man
Regional Event has a relationship with one or more Burning Man Regional
Contacts, who must agree that the event will uphold and adhere not only
to Burning Man’s Ten Principles
(http://regionals.burningman.com/network_principles.html), but to an
additional set of criteria required by Burning Man designed to assure
that the event is actually legal, permitted, insured, of benefit to the
entire community, and available to all who wish to attend.

Whenever one or more formal complaints are made about an event or a
Regional Contact, Burning Man makes careful effort to address them
directly. There is a process for a formal investigation into the
allegations made in a Regional Contact/Regional Event complaint, one
that includes interviewing and engaging with as many members of the
local community as possible to gather information and make inquiry. (If
you are not familiar with the process to send us feedback about things
happening in your region, please take a look at this page:
http://regionals.burningman.com/regional_feedback.html.)

The member of the Transformus Board of Directors had themselves been
active in asking for support and guidance from Burning Man over the past
several months as the problems with this event came to a head; in fact,
in light of those requests and the comments and complaints we had
received, Burning Man sent its Regional Network Coordinator Bex Workman
to Asheville, NC in April to meet in person with the Transformus Board
of Directors as well as members of the local community to try to gain a
better understanding into the issues the organization was facing and try
to offer some support.

Part of Bex’s purpose on this trip was to obtain information and
background from as many sources as possible, and by sending a staff
member to engage in person we hoped to come to better understand the
ticketing and technology issues with Transformus that had been brought
up for review. This visit was in addition to a number of visits that Bex
had made to the area, including two annual trips to the Transformus
Work/Play weekend, and she and Steven Raspa had both made multiple other
check-in visits with active Transformus community members over the past
3 years. Both individuals had been involved in many emails and phone
conversations and mentoring with various Transformus leadership as welll.

After Bex’s most recent visit, and following months of investigation,
many phone calls, visits and conversations, the Regional Committee has
come to the conclusion that Transformus, as it exists today, has not
been able to operate in full alignment with the principles and criteria
required to be an official Burning Man Regional event in 2008.
Specifically, the investigation has determined that the event has been
unable to uphold the tenets of Civic Responsibility and Transparency.
For example, this was seen in its inability to notify participants of
their invitations in a timely fashion, and to clearly and publicly
illustrate the methodology and fairness of that invitation process – as
of this writing there still seems to be ambiguity and frustration for
some participants, and dissent about the nature of the process, and a
need for a public address of the grievances that have been raised.

One other example is the Board Of Directors’ failure to post timely
and detailed accountings of previous events’ financial reports to the
community, either through the event’s announce list, the regional
announce lists, or through the Transformus website; timely, transparent
accounting is a strong requirement in order to maintain good standing as
a Burning Man Regional Event, but it is especially important when there
have been accusations of inaccuracy in bookkeeping. We have made
recommendations about when and how to share this bookkeeping that have
not been able to be met, although we are aware that the group are still
actively pursuing making this posting.

Among the complaints that were shared with Burning Man, some of the
most prominent were related to incomplete bookkeeping and imprecise
nature of the invitation process. As we understand it, efforts are
underway to remedy this matter, but in the strictest sense, the prior
Transformus events have failed to follow the guidelines outlined by
Burning Man and cannot truly be said to have upheld those standards.

It was a very difficult decision for us to move to suspend Transformus’
official status; however, the value in having and engaging in the
Burning Man Regional Network lies in the ability to truly identify that
certain standards and benchmarks of the Burning Man community are in
place for any event, and if they cannot be met or verified readily by
the casual observer or participant, even by the best efforts of the
persons involved, it is our duty to encourage the production team to act
to bring things back into alignment, as well as to inform the public
about our official position on the event.

In this case, although we do not believe any individual engaged in
wrongdoing, we do believe that the business entity behind Transformus is
clearly faced with a need to stop and reflect, as they have done, and in
the meantime, the current state of affairs has left little choice but to
act to address the complaints and agree that Transformus organization as
it stands is not in a position to be identified officially as a Regional
Event in 2008.

However, although Burning Man has announced that Transformus 2008 will
not qualify for official Regional Event status, we do remain actively
engaged in an effort to encourage and support the Transformus board and
the many people who produce the event, and to assist them in moving
through this period as they reflect on their leadership and determine
the common goal for its future. Although there are transitions and
challenges afoot, we want to make it clear that we believe that there is
ample enthusiasm and dedication to help rally the community to resolve
these issues together and move beyond this conflict; we are confident
that you can and will create an event that your region can be proud of,
and that leadership will guide you through and hold the center, whatever
that turns out to be.

Indeed, the Burning Man Project has every intention of continuing to
offer its support to you, and it is our hope that Transformus will seek
and regain its official Regional Event status in the future. We do still
intend to send several members of our staff to support Transformus this
year; both Bex Workman and Wally Bomgaars aka:Odwally (DMV, Rangers)
will still be sent out to offer their assistance, expertise, and sweat
to help produce Transformus, just as had been previously planned; Ranger
Splinter is also still planning to conduct a Ranger Training at the event.

We also remain eager to help to connect all interested parties with any
others in the Burning Man Regional Network who might offer their insight
and assistance through their similar experiences, whoever they may be.
We are in frequent communication with the Burning Man regional contacts
in the area who are involved and concerned about this event. Regional
Contacts are individuals who have satisfied a set of established
leadership criteria to be a contact point in a particular area, and
we’re depending on them to help translate Burning Man's expectations to
the communities they represent and to let us know what other support we
might provide. Truly, although we know the ultimate solutions are up to
the community, we still want to be as supportive as possible if we can.

However, we know that the biggest component in Transformus (the event)
solving its current spate of issues is Transformus -- the community --
deciding together to figure out how to solve them. We’ve never seen it
as our place to tell another event what to do, even those within our
“Network” – we offer what we offer by way of affiliation or relationship
and shared principles, not by ownership or dictation. Our desire to help
is not about us illustrating what “we” think “you” should do – it’s

about us sharing what our experiences have been with you, introducing
you and connecting you to others with similar experiences, and offering
whatever we do know about building community and about producing events.

In this case that experience tells us that when things go off course
and personal actions are in doubt, it helps for everyone to reflect on
their shared values, sometimes in a public process, and this can help
you to see what you can do to get back to them, together.
And yes, we have the Ten Principles, and perhaps those are a place to
start a discussion, but we trust that there are many viewpoints and sets
of ideals among those who would consider themselves participants at
Transformus. Thus, we won’t deign to try to ascribe those values to
everyone who attends that event, but we do offer them as a place to
start, especially since we’ve found them useful so often ourselves.

Burning Man isn't trying to tell Transformus that we have the solution
for them, although we believe that we have tried to offer some input and
possible solutions for consideration. Ours is not to direct, dictate,
nor even to suggest what you should do in your local groups from all the
way over here in San Francisco, and no matter how many staff members we
send to visit, we only know what you and your community are telling us,
but ultimately the solutions are up to you. Either way, we’re certain
you’ll still come together and make Transformus great this year, and we
are eager to see what the future will bring.

In closing, I’d like to again emphasize that this decision was based on
careful investigation of a mass of shifting facts and information, and
was only designed to try to help the Transformus Board Of Directors and
all of you move towards building a strong community and producing an
event supporting the values of that community. We do not believe anyone
should pull out of their participation or stop working on or planning to
attend Transformus 2008 solely because of this decision on the behalf of
the Regional Network’s official event requirements. Indeed, the primary
purpose in building the Regional Network has been to facilitate a
connection amongst all of us, and we are in no way trying to negate the
importance of Transformus and its participants or its organizers as
members of the Burning Man community.

As such, we hope that it is understood by all that the Burning Man
Project will remain available to your community for questions, comments,
or support as we can offer it (remember this is a particularly busy time
for our production staff as we near the creation of Black Rock City),
and that we do believe that Transformus will find its way to the future
Self reflection and self improvement are values that can never been
underestimated in helping manifest change.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us
directly via: regionals@burningman.com
Sincerely,

Dear Mysterians,

It is with great sadness and discomfort that I announce Transformus is no longer an official Burning Man Regional Event. The Transformus Board of Directors received an e-mail from Andi Grace of Burning Man last night stating that there had been complaints made by the community. The decision to change Transformus' s status as an official burn was based on the BOD's lack of Civic Responsibility and Transparency. An official statement will be released from Burning Man soon entailing all of the details in depth and their reasoning. It will also lay out the process necessary to regain or retain our status as a sanctioned Regional Burn.

The Transformus BOD would like to let everyone know that at no point in time did we mean for any of this to happen. We did our best to make sense of the madness that has occurred this year leading up to Transformus 2008. We apologize to the community for our break down in communication and our botched ticketing system. We are just a group of normal people, who tried to the best of our abilities to bring you a successful event. We are only human and the lack of Civic Responsibility and Transparency was never, at any point in time, meaningfully sought out.

As many of you know, several members of the Transformus BOD have resigned. We thank them for their time, energy and devotion to this event. However, moving forward, there will be a lot of changes that will take place after Transformus 2008, and we are looking to this community to foster and implement those changes. The BOD opens the gates to the community as to where the future lies in running this event after Transformus 2008. For those of you who have wanted answers, decisions, and change, I ask you to step up to the challenge of making Transformus the way the community wants it to evolve. There are still just a few BOD members, including myself, that will help facilitate the means to making the situation at hand better after the event. Until that day and time, I respectfully and earnestly ask all of you to bring positivity and not negativity to our community.

Finally, for all of those in the community who wanted action and change, here is your opportunity to do something. The event is less than a month out ,and we can come out of the darkness and produce a great event that is fun, meaningful, transformative. ..not just a party in the woods. To all of you who are still coming and making it to Transformus 2008, we want to personally thank you for believing in the magical place known as Mysteria. Despite all the drama, anger, and confusion, we will rise to make Transformus 2008, the best one to date.

Positively Yours,

Hi!
I wanted to let everyone know about a new burn, and I am part of the planning team for it, so my opinion is biased!

The burn is "Wicker Man," to be held Thursday through Monday, Memorial Day weekend; and we have a setup weekend, the weekend before. We are trying to lay the groundwork that will grow into a full-on burn, with an amazing site, roads for art cars, a $4,000 art grant budget and plans for a stupendous effigy.

We will be using Four Quarters as our site, which has the rep as one of the most edgy and progressive non-profit camps on the east coast. They have given us their full support for Wicker Man. Four Quarters has a piped water system, hot showers, flush toilets and of course port-a-potties. Buried power lines for their bio-fueled camp generator, a covered stage and three swimming holes. Lots of camping under tall trees and out in the sun too. And 2 miles of gravelled roads. Four Quarters is located 100 miles west of DC and Baltimore, just off I-68.

We want to develop a burn that is art focused and will support big art. And one that has a vision of the future of burns that is sustainable, ecologically responsible and leaves behind a small foot print. Thus "Wicker Man;" the old celebration of the Green Man and Green energy. We already have over 20 theme camps and art projects registered, and we are just beginning our announcements. We plan to have three "Theme Towns." "Sound Town," where we can run sound all night long, like the Gaian MInd psytrance festival held at Four Quarters. "Sin City" down along the river, a cure for what ever ails you. And "Center Circle," a place for nature and spirit; held inside the amazing stone circle at Four Quarters. (Yes, there is a circle of standing stones and they are BIG!)

And then there is the Man. Planned at 35 feet high our man stands on a round Temple to the Spirit of Fire, a big enough room that you can enter and place your own art and offerings to the burn. The roof of the temple is a deck upon which stands the Man, and people can stand too.. His belly is the Upper Temple, with room for just one person at a time. Each of his arms will hold a flaming fire pot, and we hope, will move as he burns. This is a huge project and we are looking to get as many people involved in his construction as possible. Ground breaking for the Man is Friday, May 9th, and then the next two weekends until he burns.

I could go on and on, but our web site is up, with the first design drawings for the Man, pictures of art grant projects and theme camps. We have a list serve / forum too. So visit the web site at wickermanburning.org for much more info.
Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind.

Each year over 40,000 people travel to Black Rock City in the Nevada desert to participate in an experience that is wholly unlike any found in modern society. For one week in late August they become part of an experimental temporary community, one which challenges its members to express themselves and rely on themselves to a degree that is not normally encountered in day-to-day life. The result of this experiment is Black Rock City, home to the Burning Man event. (www.burningman.com/)

A few simple rules allow this festival to flourish with creativity, and joy. Participants are entrusted to have personal responsibility for themselves and provide for their own needs in a sometimes harsh desert environment. There is no money exchanged at the event, rather the economy is built around each participant gifting his/her abilities to help and entertain others. There are few rules about how one must behave or express oneself at this event (save the rules that serve to protect the health, safety, and the experience of others); rather, it is up to each participant to decide how they will contribute and what they will give to this community. Creativity rather than money is valued at the event.

The event takes place on an ancient lakebed, known as the Playa, a place that starts as a blank canvas where the participants can create the community as they desire. Participants are encouraged to live in the present; in a week's time everything created in the community with disappear except for memories of each participant. By the time the event is completed and the volunteers leave, sometimes nearly a month after the event has ended, there will be no trace of the city that was, for a short time during the event, the most populous town in the entire county. Art is an unavoidable part of this experience.

The DC/VA Burning Man Film Festival is an amazing collection of work in the spirit of the radical self-expression of Burning Man. The films and shorts included in this festival pan seven years of the event, starting in 1997 through 2003. The culmination of the festival will be a talk and Q&A session with Larry Harvey, founder and Executive Director of the Burning Man Project. Films will include: "Juicy Danger Meets Burning Man", "Gifting It", and "Beyond Black Rock"

Free shuttle bus to and from the Courthouse Metro Station (1:30-4:30pm & 7:00-9:00pm).

We are going to make this a monthly (or every 2 months) tradition at G5! Come be a part of history in the making...it will be special and FUN!

Gallery5 on Friday, January 26 at 7PM.
…….
All the Saints Theater Company Presents:

Ten years ago, seven volunteers with the Great Works Theatre in New York got together and began monthly Spaghetti Dinners. These dinners were put on with the purpose of satisfying the hungers of all of those in attendance, not only their hunger for food, but their hunger for art. The individuals who began these dinners knew that art, like food, is a necessity, and by putting the two together, they could provide nourishment for the bodies and minds of all of those in attendance. The dinners are a convergence of ideas, art mediums and radicals. These monthly dinners successfully accomplished their goal of creating a forgiving atmosphere where people could explore performance styles, eat and be entertained. The entertainment aspect was typically in the form of a puppet show. Puppets are the strongest tool in expressing one’s hatred for capitalism and what it has done to the people of this world. Puppets are the ideal tool for humor and violence.

Since the Great Works Theatre began it’s dinners in New York, communities in Philadelphia, Asheville and the Northeast Kingdom have adopted the tradition. These dinners have fed and entertained hundreds, and helped communities grow stronger in doing so.

Now is the time to help bring our community a little closer together. The folks who brought you Richmond’s First Halloween Parade and the Angel of Death Ceremony in the streets of Richmond have paired together with Gallery5 to bring these Spaghetti Dinners to our city. Through gathering and sharing digestion of the brain and belly, we will create a strong community that can manifest a better tomorrow. Door prices will be a sliding scale of $5- $10 (though donations are always welcome and remember you are getting food and the entertainment must be paid). For this price, you will be able to enjoy a vegetarian spaghetti and garlic bread dinner, social commentary, music, puppet shows and CHEAP ART. Please refer to the Cheap Art Manifesto c/o Bread & Puppet Press. Cheap art hopes to reestablish the appreciation of artistic creation and its availability to all people. It is anonymous and ranges from five cents to fifty dollars.

These Spaghetti Dinners will all be held at Gallery5 and the encore dinner will feature a group of puppeteers from Philadelphia performing “Going Nowhere.” It is the first shadow puppet collaboration between Erik Ruin and Morgan F.P. Andrews. It journeys a dozen short scenes all based around the question: “If you had to give up all your senses, except one, which one would you keep?” All the Saints will also perform, “A Soldier’s Story Told by a Cockroach,” a puppet show based around Babel’s “The Death of Dulgoshov.” Those who attend will also enjoy a song from Three Penny Opera and stories by John Cage which offer glimpses at the lives of undercover pirates, daydreaming butterflies, flag-burning patriots and the linguistically tortured wife of a former New England mayor.

There will also be a lovely soundtrack by the Minneapolis duo Dreamland Faces and live music by local improvisers. Also featured will be the antics of puppet theatre troupe PunkSinatra as well as Rose Csorba's "Suspended Disbelief" marionette theatre. Music by local acts DinoSupreme and No BS brass band...

Doors will open at 7pm. Please come and help us bring this fantastic tradition to our local community.

We still need a venue for this meeting, hopefully a place where we can light up some fire to consummate our little fellowship! I know we can find couches for any out-of-towners, so give me a shout if you want to come, especially if you have a place available for 15 or so humans (just a guess).

ciao,
rabbit

thanks for joining the tribe. just to add some structure to our thoughts, here's some items to mull over...

- this burn should happen here in central VA; we have highways, airports, and lots of open space, all without DC traffic
- i'm initially thinking of a first burn of roughly 200 participants, seems a manageable size for a first burn
- we need a place to host "meet 'n' greet" events, mini-burns of 10-20 interested parties who will become the committee members
- it would be nice if we could put our first small burn together by early 2007, even if it's only 50 people
- pretty woodsy place, maybe @20 acres+, port-a-potties?
- a name...

this idea hatched on the transformus email list, an inspiration I had after transformus which attracted some interest. originally I wanted to host a burn in central VA this fall, but wiser souls cautioned me to wait, plan, and see who else is interested in chipping in. we should get together once a month and spin fire, socialize, and kick around ideas for a centrally located burn event in VA.
