active vegan

topic posted Wed, May 16, 2007 - 7:15 PM by  Emelia
I have been vegan for 2 years now and I recently went on more of a "diet" cutting out unnecessary eating of things (besides fruits and veggies) and counting calories. I go to the gym 3 times a week and lift weights, do kick boxing, an/or workout on the oliptical. My question to you guys is....do you ever feel like you don't have enough energy for this after eating well all day? Many times I feel weak and kind of sore while I am trying to do my work out. Does anyone ever feel this way? What do you like to eat to prepare for a workout or right after a serious workout?

I keep fairly active by going to a gym, taking aerial and flying trapeze classes and looking after a 4 year old. I just recently went all vegan and haven't noticed any difference in energy levels by the vegan diet. If I'm feeling tired I will drink black coffee before a work out. Maybe your energy will pick up again after your body adjusts to the fewer calories you're taking in now. Are you still getting enough carbohydrates and protein? Carbs before a workout and protein after it might help you, too.

After reading some posts on other vegan tribes, I feel I should clarify myself in order not to upset the true vegans. I should categorize myself as a vegetarian (not a true vegan) because I will on rare occasions eat milk products or eggs in something (like pancakes) if a vegan option is not available (like when at a restaurant with friends). I am aspiring to be as vegan as possible in my dietary choices, however.

Since I so rarely eat animal protein, I believe what I wrote last month still applies. I seem to have plenty of energy, as much as before when I was including dairy in my diet almost daily. For those of us trying to eat as closely to the vegan ideal as possible, I believe every effort helps and for most vegetarians wanting to embrace vegan meal choices it is likely to be a gradual process as one learns how to prepare or buy the right meals.

For extra energy before intense exercise I recommend one or all of these supplements: Vitamin B12 & Folic Acid (they go together, if you take only one it depletes the other), CoQ10, and Flax Oil (or another Omega-3 oil) and L-Carnitine. Ginseng or Black Coffee also help.
