i used to argue this at very many animal rights meets... ppl who had dogs running around all over and breeding left, right and centre... that it was irresponsible and counter to an animal rights agenda. "
In my opinion ideally in a utopic Vegan world of the future. NO. We could perhaps eventually develop relationships with other species...but I think it would take a while before we could be trusted to do this.
But in this world. YES. We created the problem and therefore it is our duty to have companion animals to treat them as equals and to respect and honor them. This goes agianst depriving their rights to reproduce. But unfortunately the society being what it is I think it is our responsibility to spay and neuter them too.
That is perhaps the only area in which I do not respect animal rights, but I think that the alternatives caused by our sick and depraved society justify this violation.
(I hate justifying stuff like that...:-( but there you go)

Re: Should Vegans keep pets (companion animals)?
Sat, December 24, 2005 - 2:34 AMI agree with you, at least in theory. If the choice we're presently faced with is (a) to release domesticated animals to fend for themselves (most of which would die pretty quickly and painfully), (b) euthanize them or (c) give them homes where they can be safe and fed for the rest of their lives, my ethical compass says "c".
Concurrent with that, it's important to work to eliminate the sources of those animals that need homes. And I would like to see a world where any companion animals were just those who chose to be around humans on their own accord, not those kept by fences and leashes. That's a long way away, tho'.
I do still have deep misgivings about petfood industry. It disturbs me to consider that chickens and other animals are killed to feed our cats. While I realize that cats would naturally hunt birds, I still don't like our meddling in the process.

Wed, May 17, 2006 - 9:28 AMHouse rabbits are completely vegan by nature, and there are many of them that need caring homes!
My partner and I adopted two adult house bunnies last year, and they've become a nonstop source of enjoyment (and sometimes frustration, since they are adventurous little guys). It's nice to have 2 more vegetarians in the house :).

Re: Should Vegans keep pets (companion animals)?
Sun, May 14, 2006 - 12:59 AMThe biggest problem is the massive overpopulation of cats and dogs who are left to fend for themselves in our urban environments - which means they end up getting horrible diseases, suffering, being tortured, murdered, etc., ... and then procreating so the cycle gets worse. I definitely believe that it's part of being an animal rights activist to adopt/foster who we can, to advocate spaying and neutering, and to fight for state-wide laws and actions to make breeding, pet stores, etc., illegal. It's all about reducing suffering.
Hopefully there will be a point in the future where companion animals actually have rights higher than those of a lawn chair. ;] -

Re: Should Vegans keep pets (companion animals)?
Mon, May 15, 2006 - 2:52 PMI heartily agree with Mel. While I am against the breeding of animals for show, competition, and other purposes of enjoyment for people, there is an overpopulation problem in both urban environments and our shelters that lead to far too many animals being euthanized (that being, any) each year. -

A Fine Balance
Tue, May 16, 2006 - 12:51 PMI think there are areas in life which cannot be painted black or white. There is a wonderful book called "A Fine Balance" and this expression often comes to me when I am pondering difficult issues such as pets and domesticated animals.
We need to reach a Fine Balance. It is very difficult. The scales tip rapidly and then the situation is even worse. When there is overpopulation - whether it be animal or human overpopulation, the most humane methods should be considered and implemented so that the Fine Balance is kept. China introduced a one-child policy for instance which is a more humane method than, for example, forced sterilisation. Allowing cats and dogs to get overpopulated in cities for instance, or on some islands where they destroy the natural eco-system, is not a good idea. I believe it is doing them a favour to take care that they do not reproduce more than the environment is able to cope with.
We as humans have the ability to reason and the gift of logic and we must use these in order to carry out our duties towards our fellow animals to ensure that they live the best possible life in the conditions which we live in at present in the 21st century, and in the particular ecosystem or social structure we live in. We cannot fight the wind. We can only build barriers to prevent the wind from blowing down our houses.
Is is important to have ideals. Without ideals, we will never grow, and never evolve. And sometimes we just damn well have to choose between the Devil and The Deep Blue Sea. Spaying and neutering domestic animals is the best solution we have available to us, for the sake of the animals.
PEOPLE WHO BREED ANIMALS IN ORDER TO SELL THEM ARE DISGUSTING! (Yes, I know I'm shouting, but breeders are to me in the same category as fur farmers, although a bit lower down the scale. They just use animals for monetary purposes and that is SOOOOOOO disgusting.)
I have absolutely nothing against domestic pets per se. I do not exploit my cat. He does not exploit me either. We both give each other what we need. I give him shelter, food, love, medical care and a warm pillow to sleep on at night (and you all know that when a cat shares a pillow, the human does not have much of it left - LOL!!!!), and he gives me love, enjoyment, laughs, warmth and happiness. It's a win win situation. He appeared one day in my life all thin, full of fleas and ticks and hungry. I found him asleep on my bed. I woke him gently and he started to purr.... and he has not stopped purring since! -

My cat totally exploits me, having now been thoroughly trained to get up and open the window every night around 3-4am! :) -

Wed, May 17, 2006 - 5:08 PMyep. I am also exploited..to the point that one miaow gets me up in a zombie state to open the door for him.
Although to be fair, I can open the door whenever I want, and I would hate to have to ask someone to open the door for all my comings and goings...;-)...
maybe I need to install a cat door for him?
but that does not justify his eating of my leg in the middle of the night, playing with my hair while I sleep, or his lying across BOTH pillows when my wife and I come to bed...
I need to call the humane society and complain agianst my cat ;-)....ooop! gotta go it's wet food time ;-) -

Re: A Fine Balance
Sun, June 18, 2006 - 6:03 PMManny and his three siblings tuned up one blisteringly hot day five years ago, in the street gutter out front of my mom's house, a few days old, eyes still closed.
I have one door open always so that Manny can come and go as he pleases. His water dish automatically refills. He has two litter boxes and I clean them out daily. He still makes a point of waking me every morning somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 am to make me add food to his already full food dish, biting my legs as I walk. When he's done eating, he comes to bed to stomp all over me and the dogs (also rescues) while purring so loudly I'd swear the neighbors can hear him. That's if he's not in the mood to pull my hair and bite my skull. He's made it necessary for me to run a mouse hospice/recovery ward.
Add me to the exploited pile.

concur.
all of our kids are rescues - cats feral, the bulldog from the side of the road and death's door, and the chi from a puppy mill via a sherrif's/animal control raid on the facility.
they needed homes, and love. we had a home and love. perfect match.
as for the spaying/neutering - sometimes all we can do is select the least bad choice among a set of bad choices (imo). -
