I get a lot of mixed feeling on that.
I have bought things at thrift stores in the past that are wool or have leather in them.I tell myself that 'I am recycling ' but it feels like, in a round about way, that I am still supporting the beast that hurts animals.
Is there a receipt with those shoes ;)
    otherwise....

with thrift stores, at least youre not supporting a company that manufactures leather or wool.
the main problem is someone on the street or your friends noticing and asking you why youre being such a hypocrite, heh heh.

but what im doing is far worse, the fact that its a brand new coat made with wool....this was actually a custom made coat, which cannot be found or made by any vegan designers. my rationalization was that its a one-time purchase, i don't plan to buy anymore wool coats, i needed a very warm coat to survive the winter here. in the future, when i dont want an extravagant over the top special winter coat (it even has big bunny ears on top) i can buy the vegan faux wool version.

i guess my question is how do you reconcile owning or accepting or even buying a few pieces of non-vegan clothing?

like, should i renounce being a vegan until these items are long gone, 10 years from now?

i also took a bite of my boyfriends pizza, which had barely any cheese on it. you know the germans eat pizza like the italians, thin crust and almost invisible layer of cheese, not at all like american pizza!

When you purchase second hand you are not increasing the demand.

The main situation is we are culture "consumers"
and if we are in the category of "second hand consumers" then.... alas....

we don't have too many options.

With being a Vegan - it's all about choices and options.

If it is freezing and the only choice is wool. That is the options that the Universe has
      presented to you.

If you have the consciousness that says "when I can consume (purchase)
a non animal option I will." Then you are moving in a good direction.

"Go towards the light (as much as you can)"

      Peace Out!

I agree with David. I think your boyfriend doesn't respect you and your life style. My suggestion, dump your boyfriend!! I'm not joking or trying to be offensive, that's what I really think.

I think you can still call yourself vegan if you accept these gifts. Of course there are vegans who would not accept or wear clothing with animal parts. And hopefully the purest vegans will not mind if the less pure vegans still identify with being vegan. I call myself a vegan, and I usually don't buy leather or wool, but I still wear those things if I already had them from years before. And I have recently bought shoes (I use for flying trapeze) that have leather soles. I did opt for the canvas tops, rather than leather tops, but shoes with plastic soles slip when I land on the platform, and so I bought the leather sole ones.

In a vegan philosophical point of view, I think a pure vegan would not wear leather or wool. But a vegan/mostly vegan person could wear these things. It's pretty difficult to avoid leather all together. Would you not drive a car that has leather in it, for instance?

But, if you do wear a little leather or wool you should probably be prepared with an answer to your reasoning if people ask why you won't eat animal parts but you'll wear them.

there is no such thing as a "pure vegan". it's absolutely impossible.

that is such an interesting statement david and has really really made me think hard and even the people i know who are living as pure as i think possible really aren't...but at least we all do what we can.

            thanks x

              Thanks David.

We, as Vegans, are on a path -

and where we are on that path is where we are.

There is the main line that we jump over..... and the rest is a little at a time.

This is a VERY good example of use being consumers stuck in a violent culture.

I totally understand this person and others working on a trapeze - as there is no other suitable option
for any of those people. Plastic bottoms are not acceptable on "the platform"
I am sure when this person and others can consume a vegan option - they will.

And the same is with bowling - I have not gone bowling since I woke up -
but in the past few years I thought about it - and I will go bowling when asked - I will not purchase them shoes -
but I will rent them for a short time. - Oh, and I am NOT a skinhead.... ;-)
