So, I'm at a loss currently. I've been researching the benefits of supplements especially when u are vegan but I still feel like I can get all I need in my nutrition (vegan and all). I'm not really positive how I should go about that. I would rather not use supplements because of the lifeless quality pills have. I have heard good and bad. Anyone have suggestions?

Its absolutely possible to get everything you need from a vegan diet, as long as you eat a wide variety of fruits, veggies and whole grains. If you can't get, or don't like, a wide variety of foods, or are particularly prone to deficiencies (for instance some people's bodies don't process B-12 adequately and therefore need more than average amounts), supplements are an ok way to go. Just pay attention to where the nutrients are derived from and what kind of capsules are used. For all people, getting your nutrients from food as opposed to supplements is always better, and vegan bodies generally utilize proteins, healthy fats, calcium and iron more efficiently than non-vegan bodies. Our bodies aren't polluted! I've never taken supplements and am in excellent health; my doctors and nurse practitioners are always forced to admit that I'm right when my blood work comes back (I'm a nurse, I utilize Western Medicine a bit more than almost all the other vegans I know)

I take supplements. I eat healthy vegan foods, but I don't mind filling in any possible gaps with supplementation. I'm careful to get vegetarian supplements (hopefully they are vegan, too). I take quite a few supplements every day, I have for years, not just since I started avoiding animal products.

Calcium is an important supplement especially for women as they grow older. I think that is one every vegan woman should consider taking. Calcium should be accompanied by Vitamin D and Magnesium for proper absorption. The ratio of Calcium to Magnesium should be aproximately 2 to 1. Like 1000 mg. Calcium with 500 mg. Magnesium, along with some Vitamin D (or sunshine).

Vitamin B12 is certainly another (and take it with a B complex vitamin or Multi and extra folic acid (or a B vitamin rich food and with folic acid). B12 and folic acid should be taken together as one robs the other from the body if either is taken alone.

Also Vitamin E is really worth taking as a supplement. I have liquid vitamin E right now, so I can avoid the gelatin capsule vitamin E usually comes in.
