OK, Think I'm about to take the plunge. I would prefer to go SVO. What specific makes and models do people who have done it reccomend?

Re: Best conversion cars?
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 3:07 PMCAR- I recommend mercedes, any model, but keeping in mind that station wagons are very impracticle for veggie conversions. New volkswagons are nice as well, older volkswagon diesels(volvo, audi) have the weakest heads and head gaskets known to man, DO NOT OVER HEAT.
TRUCK-dodge 250 or 350 5.9 liter cummins-best motor hands down. Fords or for that matter anything with an international 7.3 liter are weak in my experience, although the new powerstrokes are much better having done away with the injection pump and switched to common rail heads. GMs have proved better than fords, but still not my fav
Most important, have the compression tested before you get a conversion, don't waste money converting a lemon. -

Re: Best conversion cars?
Sun, January 15, 2006 - 12:10 AMThanks. I would really like to find a van that was convertable since this is what I drive now, and works best for my business and lifestyle. VW vans? Why are station wagons impracticle, seems like they would have more room for a big tank... Thanks, Diana -

Mon, January 16, 2006 - 1:07 PMI feel that putting a heated(180 degree) tank in the same space that you are traveling in is unsafe. -

Re: Best conversion cars?
Tue, January 31, 2006 - 1:40 PMHey, hi, I just joined this tribe.
I have a 1980 300D and of course I think this is one of the best cars. I did my own conversion from scratch, and the first mistake I made was miswiring my VegTherm relay. Of course, I didnt realize it at first. On a 65 degree day the car started and ran without a problem on cold WVO and didnt even flinch. My own firsthand experience of how tolerant these cars are.
The only real problem I encountered was how to run the hoses under the car without having them hand down too low, and how to protect the hoses as they crossed the exhaust pipes. -

Re: Best conversion cars?
Thu, December 20, 2007 - 8:23 AMhi ya, I'm from France. I just joined this tribe. in my experience best engines are old TD or atmo engines, with bosch or zexel or kiki in-line mechanic injection pump:
* all mercedes with a five cylinder (best ones 250D & 270D).
* nissan patrol 6 cyl 3.3L TD/D MQ/MK Baroud, 2.8L 6 cyl TD, 4.2L TD/D GU/GQ.
* peugeot, renault, citroën with xud and 1,9l TD/D engines.
* VW, audi 1.9TD/D
* Mitsubishi
there is a list here:

don't know much about us cars
please note I'm not doing any ad for els...t
my car is a 1988 nissan patrol MQ 6 cyl 3.3L TD with 272 000 km home converted. and it's just fine.
it can drive 100% on wvo without any updates when the weather is cool, but still I have fitted some custom electrical and heat exchanger heaters on single tank (double all in one filters, line injector heaters).
when it gets cold I mix the wvo with kero/gasoil.
